Not Synced
It's often said that you can tell
a lot about a person
-
Not Synced
by the looking at what's
on their bookshelves.
-
Not Synced
What do my bookshelves
say about me?
-
Not Synced
Well, when I asked myself
this question a few years ago,
-
Not Synced
I made an alarming discovery.
-
Not Synced
I'd always thought of myself
as a fairly, cultured, cosmopolitan
-
Not Synced
sort of person.
-
Not Synced
But my bookshelves told
a rather different story.
-
Not Synced
Pretty much all the titles on them
-
Not Synced
were by British of North American authors,
-
Not Synced
and there was almost nothing
in translation.
-
Not Synced
Discovering this massive,
cultural blind spot
-
Not Synced
came as quite a shock.
-
Not Synced
And when I thought about it,
it seemed like a real shame.
-
Not Synced
I knew there had to be
lots of amazing stories out there
-
Not Synced
by writers working in languages
other than English.
-
Not Synced
And it seemed really sad to think
that my reading habits
-
Not Synced
meant that I would probably
never encounter them.
-
Not Synced
So, I decided to prescribe myself
-
Not Synced
an intensive course in global reading.
-
Not Synced
2012 was set to be a very
international year for the UK,
-
Not Synced
it was the year of the London Olympics.
-
Not Synced
And so I decided to use it
as my timeframe
-
Not Synced
to try to read a novel,
short story collection,
-
Not Synced
or memoir from every country
in the world.
