I Love Assistive Technology!

  • 0:00 - 0:01

    Hello.
  • 0:02 - 0:05
    Please take a moment
    to watch this video
  • 0:05 - 0:10
    and learn about the technologies
I use that help me communicate.
  • 0:10 - 0:14
I promise I will only take
a few minutes of your time.
  • 0:14 - 0:18
    [MUSIC PLAYING]
  • 0:18 - 0:42
  • 0:42 - 0:46
    I communicate using a high
    tech voice output communication
  • 0:46 - 0:49
    device called the
    ECO-14, manufactured
  • 0:49 - 0:52
    by the Prentke Romich Company.
  • 0:52 - 0:56
    This is my primary
    means of communication.
  • 0:56 - 1:00
I also use a low tech lap
    tray communication board
  • 1:00 - 1:05
as a backup to ensure I always
    have a way to communicate.
  • 1:05 - 1:07
    In high school I
    learn how to use
  • 1:07 - 1:10
    a voice helpful
    communication device called
  • 1:10 - 1:15
    The Liberator, also manufactured
    by the Prentke Romich Company.
  • 1:15 - 1:18
    But after graduation,
    I did not have
  • 1:18 - 1:22
    the support I needed to
    keep using my Liberator.
  • 1:22 - 1:25
I was unable to use my
    communication device,
  • 1:25 - 1:28
    and that meant I had
    to rely on other people
  • 1:28 - 1:31
to ask me yes and no questions.
  • 1:31 - 1:34
    I can answer yes
    and no questions
  • 1:34 - 1:39
    by opening my eyes to
    answer yes and closing
  • 1:39 - 1:42
    my eyes to answer no.
  • 1:42 - 1:44
    The only other way
    I could communicate
  • 1:44 - 1:47
    was to use my low
    tech communication
  • 1:47 - 1:49
    board on my lap tray.
  • 1:49 - 1:52
    Because I cannot point
    to the pictures myself,
  • 1:52 - 1:57
I must rely on other people to
help me using an access method
  • 1:57 - 2:00
    called partner
    assisted scanning.
  • 2:00 - 2:03
    I will now demonstrate
    partner assisted scanning.
  • 2:03 - 2:06
  • 2:06 - 2:07
    You.
  • 2:07 - 2:08
    Me.
  • 2:08 - 2:17
  • 2:17 - 2:17
    Finished.
  • 2:17 - 2:25
  • 2:25 - 2:28
    Bathroom.
  • 2:28 - 2:29
You need to use the bathroom?
  • 2:29 - 2:30
    No?
  • 2:30 - 2:32
    Am I finished going
    to the bathroom?
  • 2:32 - 2:34
Am I finished with the bathroom?
  • 2:34 - 2:35
    In my house?
  • 2:35 - 2:38
Oh, you're asking, am I finished
with the bathrooms in my house?
  • 2:38 - 2:40
    Oh, my gosh, yes.
  • 2:40 - 2:41
    We're finished.
  • 2:41 - 2:43
    It's a story.
  • 2:43 - 2:44
It was-- it was a story.
  • 2:44 - 2:48
    But yes, we are
    finished with them.
  • 2:48 - 2:50
    Partner assisted
    scanning is very
  • 2:50 - 2:53
    difficult for people
    who don't know
  • 2:53 - 2:55
how to use the board with me.
  • 2:55 - 2:59
    It can be frustrating
for me and the people who
  • 2:59 - 3:03
are trying to use my board
    to communicate with me.
  • 3:03 - 3:07
    After about five years of
    being dependent on other people
  • 3:07 - 3:12
to help me communicate, I began
    to receive speech therapy.
  • 3:12 - 3:16
    Through speech therapy, I
    learned to use the ECO-14,
  • 3:16 - 3:18
    and now I have the
    support I need to keep
  • 3:18 - 3:21
    using my communication device.
  • 3:21 - 3:27
I am now able to communicate
    independently using my ECO-14.
  • 3:27 - 3:30
    I cannot use my hands
    to point to the device,
  • 3:30 - 3:34
so I must use a switch
positioned at my head to access
  • 3:34 - 3:36
    my ECO-14.
  • 3:36 - 3:40
I use my switch to make choices
    through a method of selection
  • 3:40 - 3:42
    called "scanning."
  • 3:42 - 3:46
    Another obstacle I face
    that affects my ability
  • 3:46 - 3:50
    to communicate is not being
    able to read and spell.
  • 3:50 - 3:54
I was not taught to read as
a child so now I am trying
  • 3:54 - 3:58
to learn to read as an adult
    because I cannot spell out
  • 3:58 - 4:00
    my messages.
  • 4:00 - 4:02
    I choose pictures
    of my ECO-14 that
  • 4:02 - 4:08
    represent words and put them
    together to make sentences.
  • 4:08 - 4:11
    I will show you
    how I do this now.
  • 4:11 - 4:13
Want to hear a knock-knock joke?
  • 4:13 - 4:16
    Yes, I would love to
    hear a knock-knock joke.
  • 4:16 - 4:20
  • 4:20 - 4:21
    Knock-knock.
  • 4:21 - 4:21
    Knock-knock.
  • 4:21 - 4:22
    Who's there?
  • 4:22 - 4:32
  • 4:32 - 4:33
    Nose.
  • 4:33 - 4:34
    Nose who?
  • 4:34 - 4:38
  • 4:38 - 4:40
    I knows plenty more
    knock-knock jokes.
  • 4:40 - 4:41
    Oh, good.
  • 4:41 - 4:43
    You know knows plenty
    more knock-knock jokes.
  • 4:43 - 4:44
    Tell me one more.
  • 4:44 - 4:50
  • 4:50 - 4:51
    Knock-knock.
  • 4:51 - 4:52
    Who's there?
  • 4:52 - 4:56
  • 4:56 - 4:57
    Pencil.
  • 4:57 - 4:59
    Pencil who?
  • 4:59 - 5:02
    Your pants will fall down
when you wear them so low.
  • 5:02 - 5:03
    [LAUGHING]
  • 5:03 - 5:04
    That's great.
  • 5:04 - 5:05
    All right, that was awesome.
  • 5:05 - 5:06
    That was a good one.
  • 5:06 - 5:07
    Good, good.
  • 5:07 - 5:08
    OK.
  • 5:08 - 5:10
    That was a good
    example of scanning.
  • 5:10 - 5:13
    Is there anything else
    you wanted to say?
  • 5:13 - 5:23
    I love my ECO-14.
  • 5:23 - 5:27
  • 5:27 - 5:30
    I love my ECO-14.
  • 5:30 - 5:32
    As you can see, it
    takes some time for me
  • 5:32 - 5:35
    to write a sentence.
  • 5:35 - 5:38
I need people to be patient
and wait for me to select
  • 5:38 - 5:41
the words I want to say.
  • 5:41 - 5:44
    I understand everything
    that is said to me,
  • 5:44 - 5:47
    but it takes time
    for me to respond.
  • 5:47 - 5:51
    The ECO-14 has made a
    big change in my life
  • 5:51 - 5:54
    because I am no longer
    dependent on others
  • 5:54 - 5:56
    to be able to communicate.
  • 5:56 - 6:00
People can see I am intelligent
    and I have important things
  • 6:00 - 6:02
    to say.
  • 6:02 - 6:05
    Thank you for taking the
    time to watch this video.
  • 6:05 - 6:08
  • 6:08 - 6:12
    [MUSIC PLAYING]

Title:
I Love Assistive Technology!
Description:

Join augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) expert Nicole Lilienthal, M.S. CCC-SLP for an exciting glimpse into the world of assistive technology. See first hand how multiple alternative communication strategies are implemented to assist a nonspeaking adult, "Mr. P", with his goal of achieving communication independence. Examples of partner assisted scanning on a low tech communication device (lap tray) and 4 quadrant row/column scanning on a high tech voice output communication device (Prentke Romich ECO-14) are demonstrated.
