9 myths about psychology: debunked

    How much do you know
    about what makes you tick,

    and how good are you
    at predicting other peoples' behavior
  • Not Synced
    or even your own?
  • Not Synced
    And how much about what you think
    you know about psychology is wrong?
  • Not Synced
    So let's find out by counting down
    the top 10 myths of psychology.
  • Not Synced
    So you've probably heard it said
    that when it comes to their psychology,
  • Not Synced
    it's almost as if men are from Mars
    and women are from Venus.
  • Not Synced
    But how different
    are men and women really?
  • Not Synced
    So to find out, let's start by looking
    at something on which men and women
  • Not Synced
    really do differ
  • Not Synced
    and plotting some psychological
    gender differences on the same scale.
  • Not Synced
    So one thing that men and women
  • Not Synced
    do really differ on is how far
    they can throw a ball.
  • Not Synced
    So if we look at the data for men here,
  • Not Synced
    we see what is called
    a normal distribution curve.
  • Not Synced
    A few men can throw a ball really far,
  • Not Synced
    and a few men not far at all,
  • Not Synced
    but most a kind of average difference.
  • Not Synced
    And women share
    the same distribution as well,
  • Not Synced
    but actually there's
    quite a big difference.
  • Not Synced
    In fact, the average man
    can throw a ball further
  • Not Synced
    than about 98 percent of all women.
  • Not Synced
    So now let's look at what
    some psychological gender differences
  • Not Synced
    look like on the same standardized scale.
  • Not Synced
    So any psychologist will tell you
    that men are better
  • Not Synced
    at spacial awareness than women,
  • Not Synced
    so things like map-reading, for example,
  • Not Synced
    and it's true,
  • Not Synced
    but let's have a look
    at the size of this difference.
  • Not Synced
    It's tiny: the lines are so close together
    that they almost overlap.
  • Not Synced
    In fact, the average woman is better
    than 33 percent of all men,
  • Not Synced
    and of course, if that was 50 percent,
  • Not Synced
    then the two genders
    would be exactly equal.
  • Not Synced
    And it's worth bearing in mind
    that this difference
  • Not Synced
    and the next one I'm going to show you
  • Not Synced
    are pretty much the biggest
    psychological gender differences
  • Not Synced
    ever discovered in psychology.
  • Not Synced
    So here's the next one.
  • Not Synced
    Any psychologist will tell you
    that women are better
  • Not Synced
    with language and grammar than men.
  • Not Synced
    So here's performance
    on the standardized grammar test.
  • Not Synced
    There go the women. There go to the men.
  • Not Synced
    Again, yes, women are better on average,
  • Not Synced
    but the lines are so close
  • Not Synced
    that 33 percent of men
  • Not Synced
    are better than the average woman,
  • Not Synced
    and again, if it was 50 percent,
  • Not Synced
    that would represent
    complete gender equality.
  • Not Synced
    So it's not really
    a case of Mars and Venus.
  • Not Synced
    It's more a case of, if anything,
    Mars and Snickers:
  • Not Synced
    basically the same, but, you know,
  • Not Synced
    one's maybe slightly
    nuttier than the other.
  • Not Synced
    I won't say which.
  • Not Synced
    Right. Now we've got you warmed up.
  • Not Synced
    Let's psychoanalyze you using
    the famous Rorschach inkblot test.
  • Not Synced
    So you can probably see two, I dunno,
    two bears or two people or something.
  • Not Synced
    But what do you think they're doing?
  • Not Synced
    Put your hand up if you think
    they're saying hello.
  • Not Synced
    Not many people. Okay.
  • Not Synced
    Put your hands up if you think
    they are high-fiving.
  • Not Synced
    Okay. What if you think they're fighting?
  • Not Synced
    Only a few people there.
  • Not Synced
    Okay, so if you think they're
    saying hello or high-fiving,
  • Not Synced
    then that means you're a friendly person.
  • Not Synced
    If you think they're fighting,
    that means you're a bit more
  • Not Synced
    of a nasty, aggressive person.
  • Not Synced
    Are you a lover or a fighter, basically.
  • Not Synced
    All right, what about this one?

    This isn't really a voting one,
  • Not Synced
    so on three, everyone
    shout out what you see.

    One, two, three.
  • Not Synced
    I heard hamster. Who said hamster?
  • Not Synced
    That was very worrying.
  • Not Synced
    A guy there said hamster.
  • Not Synced
    Well, you should see
    some kind of two-legged animal here,
  • Not Synced
    and then the mirror image of them there.
  • Not Synced
    If you didn't, then this means
    that you have difficulty
  • Not Synced
    processing complex situations
  • Not Synced
    where there's a lot going on.
  • Not Synced
    Except, of course,
    it doesn't mean that at all.
  • Not Synced
    Rorschach inkblot tests
    have basically no validity
  • Not Synced
    when it comes to diagnosing
    people's personality
  • Not Synced
    and are not used
    by modern-day psychologists.
  • Not Synced
    In fact, one recent study found
  • Not Synced
    that when you do try
    to diagnose people's personality
  • Not Synced
    using Rorschach inkblot tests,
  • Not Synced
    schizophrenia was diagnosed
  • Not Synced
    in about one sixth of apparently
    perfectly normal participants.
  • Not Synced
    So if you didn't do that well on this,
  • Not Synced
    maybe you are not
    a very visual type of person.
  • Not Synced
    So let's do another
    quick quiz to find out.

    When making a cake, do you prefer to

    are a visual learner

    is presented in a visual style.

    If you said b, it means
    you're an auditory learner,

    that you learn best when information
    is presented to you in an auditory format,

    and if you said c,

    it means that you're
    a kinesthetic learner,
  • Not Synced
    that you learn best when you get stuck in
  • Not Synced
    and do things with your hands.

    Except, of course,
    as you've probably guessed,
  • Not Synced
    that it doesn't, because
    the whole thing is a complete myth.

    Learning styles are made up
  • Not Synced
    and are not supported
    by scientific evidence.
  • Not Synced
    So we know this because in
    tightly controlled experimental studies,
  • Not Synced
    when learners are given material to learn
  • Not Synced
    either in their preferred style
    or an opposite style,
  • Not Synced
    it makes no difference at all
  • Not Synced
    to the amount of information
    that they retain.
  • Not Synced
    And if you think about it
    for just a second,
  • Not Synced
    it's just obvious
    that this has to be true.
  • Not Synced
    It's obvious that
    the best presentation format
  • Not Synced
    depends not on you,
  • Not Synced
    but on what you're trying to learn.
  • Not Synced
    Could you learn to drive a car,
    for example,
  • Not Synced
    just by listening to someone
    telling you what to do
  • Not Synced
    with no kinesthetic experience?
  • Not Synced
    Could you solve simultaneous equations
  • Not Synced
    by talking them through in your head
    and without writing them down?
  • Not Synced
    Could you ?? for your architecture exams
  • Not Synced
    using interpretive dance
    if you're a kinesthetic learner?
  • Not Synced
    No. What you need to do is match
  • Not Synced
    the material to be learned
    to the presentation format,
  • Not Synced
    not you.
  • Not Synced
    So, I know many of you
    are A-level students
  • Not Synced
    that will have recently gotten
    your ???? results.
  • Not Synced
    And if you didn't quite get
    what you were hoping for,
  • Not Synced
    then you can't really blame
    your learning style,
  • Not Synced
    but one thing that you might want
    to think about blaming is your genes.
  • Not Synced
    So what this is all about
  • Not Synced
    is a recent study
    at University College London
  • Not Synced
    found that 58 percent of the variation
  • Not Synced
    between different students
    and their ??? results
  • Not Synced
    was down to genetic factors.
  • Not Synced
    So that sounds a very precise figure,
  • Not Synced
    so how can we tell?
  • Not Synced
    Well, when we want to unpack
    the relative contributions
  • Not Synced
    of genes and the environment,
  • Not Synced
    what we can do is do a twin study.
  • Not Synced
    So identical twins share
    100 percent of their environment
  • Not Synced
    and 100 percent of their genes,
  • Not Synced
    whereas non-identical twins
    share 100 percent of their environment,
  • Not Synced
    but just like any brother and sister,
  • Not Synced
    share only 50 percent of their genes.
  • Not Synced
    So by comparing how similar
    ??? results are in identical twins
  • Not Synced
    versus non-identical twins,
  • Not Synced
    and doing some clever math,
  • Not Synced
    we can an idea of how much variation
    and performance is due to the environment
  • Not Synced
    and how much is due to genes.
  • Not Synced
    And it turns out that it's
    about 58 percent due to genes.
  • Not Synced
    So this isn't to undermine the hard work
    that you and your teachers here put in.
  • Not Synced
    If you didn't quite get the ??? results
    that you were hoping for,
  • Not Synced
    then you can always try blaming
    your parents, or at least their genes.

    One thing that you shouldn't blame
  • Not Synced
    is being a left brained
    or right brained learner,
  • Not Synced
    because again, this is a myth.
  • Not Synced
    So the myth here is that
    the left brain is logical,
  • Not Synced
    it's good with equations like this,
  • Not Synced
    and the right brain is more creative,
  • Not Synced
    so the right brain is better at music.
  • Not Synced
    But again, this is a myth
    because nearly everything that you do
  • Not Synced
    involves nearly all parts
    of your brain talking together,
  • Not Synced
    even just the most mundane thing
    like having a normal conversation.
  • Not Synced
    However, perhaps one reason
    why this myth has survived
  • Not Synced
    is that there is
    a slight grain of truth to it.
  • Not Synced
    So a related version of the myth
  • Not Synced
    is that left-handed people are
    more creative than right-handed people,
  • Not Synced
    which kind of makes sense because
    your brain controls the opposite hands,
  • Not Synced
    so left-handed people,
  • Not Synced
    the right side of the brain
    is slightly more active
  • Not Synced
    than the left hand side of the brain,
  • Not Synced
    and the idea is the right-hand side
    is more creative.
  • Not Synced
    Now, it isn't true per se
  • Not Synced
    that left-handed people are more creative
    than right-handed people.
  • Not Synced
    What is true that ambidextrous people,
  • Not Synced
    or people who use both hands
    for different tasks,
  • Not Synced
    are more creative thinkers
    than one-handed people,
  • Not Synced
    because being ambidextrous involves
  • Not Synced
    having both sides of the brain
    talk to each other a lot,
  • Not Synced
    which seems to be involved
    in creating flexible thinking.
  • Not Synced
    The myth of the creative left-hander
  • Not Synced
    arises from the fact
    that being ambidextrous
  • Not Synced
    is more common amongst left-handers
  • Not Synced
    than right handers,
  • Not Synced
    so a grain of truth in the idea
    of the creative left-hander,
  • Not Synced
    but not much.
  • Not Synced
    A related myth that you've
    probably heard of
  • Not Synced
    is that we only use
    10 percent of our brains.
  • Not Synced
    This is, again, a complete myth.
  • Not Synced
    Nearly everything that we do,
    even the most mundane thing,
  • Not Synced
    uses nearly all of our brains.
  • Not Synced
    That said, it is of course true
  • Not Synced
    that most of us don't use our brainpower
  • Not Synced
    quite as well as we could.
  • Not Synced
    So what could we do
    to boost our brain power?
  • Not Synced
    Maybe we could listen
    to a nice bit of Mozart.
  • Not Synced
    So have you heard of the idea
    of the Mozart effect?
  • Not Synced
    So the idea is that listening to Mozart
  • Not Synced
    makes you smarter and improves
    your performance on IQ tests.
  • Not Synced
    Now again, what's interesting
    about this myth
  • Not Synced
    is that although it's basically a myth,
  • Not Synced
    there is a grain of truth to it.
  • Not Synced
    So the original study found that
  • Not Synced
    participants who were played
    Mozart music for a few minutes
  • Not Synced
    did better on a subsequent IQ test
  • Not Synced
    than participants who simply
    sat in silence.
  • Not Synced
    But a follow-up study recruited
    some people who like Mozart music
  • Not Synced
    and then another group of people
  • Not Synced
    who were fans of the horror stories
    of Stephen King.
  • Not Synced
    And they played the people
    the music or the stories.
  • Not Synced
    The people who preferred
    Mozart music to the stories
  • Not Synced
    got a bigger IQ boost
    from the Mozart than the stories,
  • Not Synced
    but the people who preferred
    the stories to the Mozart music
  • Not Synced
    got a bigger IQ boost
  • Not Synced
    from listening to the Stephen King stories
    than the Mozart music.
  • Not Synced
    So the truth is that listening
    to something that you enjoy
  • Not Synced
    perks you up a bit
    and gives you a temporary IQ boost
  • Not Synced
    on a narrow range of tasks.
  • Not Synced
    There's no suggestion that
    listening to Mozart
  • Not Synced
    or indeed Stephen King stories
  • Not Synced
    is going to make you any smarter
    in the long run.
  • Not Synced
    So another version of the Mozart myth
  • Not Synced
    is that listening to Mozart can make you
    not only cleverer but healthier, too.
  • Not Synced
    Unfortunately, this doesn't
    seem to be true
  • Not Synced
    of someone who listened
    to the music of Mozart almost every day,
  • Not Synced
    Mozart himself,
  • Not Synced
    who suffered from gonorrhea,
    smallpox, arthritis,
  • Not Synced
    and what most people think
    eventually killed him in the end,
  • Not Synced
    syphilis.
  • Not Synced
    This suggests that Mozart
    should have bit more careful, perhaps,
  • Not Synced
    when choosing his sexual partners.
  • Not Synced
    But how do we choose a partner?
  • Not Synced
    So a myth, but I have to say
    is sometimes spread a bit by sociologists
  • Not Synced
    is that our preferences
    in a romantic partner
  • Not Synced
    are a product of our culture,
  • Not Synced
    that they're very culturally specific,
  • Not Synced
    but in fact, the data don't back this up.
  • Not Synced
    So a famous study surveyed people from
    32 different cultures across the globe,
  • Not Synced
    from Americans to Zulus,
  • Not Synced
    on what they look for in a partner.
  • Not Synced
    And in every single culture
    across the globe,
  • Not Synced
    men placed more value
    on physical attractiveness in a partner
  • Not Synced
    than did women,
  • Not Synced
    and in every single culture, too,
  • Not Synced
    women placed more importance than did men
  • Not Synced
    on ambition and high earning power.
  • Not Synced
    In every culture, too,
  • Not Synced
    men preferred women
    who were younger than themselves,
  • Not Synced
    an average of I think it was 2.66 years,
  • Not Synced
    and in every culture, too,
  • Not Synced
    women preferred men
    who were older than them,
  • Not Synced
    so an average of 3.42 years,
  • Not Synced
    which is why we've got here
    "Everybody Needs A Sugar Daddy."

    So moving on from trying
    to score with a partner
  • Not Synced
    to trying to score in basketball
    or football or whatever your sport is.

    So the myth here is that sportsmen
  • Not Synced
    go through hot hand streaks,
    Americans call them,
  • Not Synced
    or purple patches,
    we sometimes say in England,
  • Not Synced
    where they just can't miss,
  • Not Synced
    like this guy here.
  • Not Synced
    But in fact, what happens is that
    if you analyze the pattern
  • Not Synced
    of hits and misses statistically,
  • Not Synced
    it turns out that it's
    nearly always at random.
  • Not Synced
    Your brain creates patterns
    from the randomness.
  • Not Synced
    So if you toss a coin, you know,
  • Not Synced
    a streak of heads or tails is going
    to come out somewhere in randomness,
  • Not Synced
    and becomes the brain likes
    to see patterns where there are none,
  • Not Synced
    we look at these streaks
    and attribute meanings to them
  • Not Synced
    and say, "Yeah he's really on form today,"
  • Not Synced
    whereas actually you would
    get the same pattern
  • Not Synced
    if you were just getting
    hits and misses at random.
  • Not Synced
    So an exception to this, however,
    is penalty shootouts.
  • Not Synced
    A recent study looking
    at penalty shootouts in football
  • Not Synced
    shows that players who represent countries
  • Not Synced
    with a very bad record
    in penalty shootouts,
  • Not Synced
    like, for example, England,
  • Not Synced
    tend to be quicker to take their shots
    than countries with a better record,
  • Not Synced
    and presumably as a result,
    they're more likely to miss.
  • Not Synced
    Which raises the question
  • Not Synced
    of if there's any way that we
    could improve people's performance,
  • Not Synced
    and one thing you might think about doing
  • Not Synced
    is punishing people for their misses
  • Not Synced
    and seeing if that improves things.
  • Not Synced
    This idea, the effect that punishment
    can improve performance,
  • Not Synced
    is what participants
    thought they were testing
  • Not Synced
    in Milgram's famous learning
    and punishment experiment
  • Not Synced
    that you've probably heard about
    if you're a psychology student.
  • Not Synced
    The story goes that participants
    were prepared to give
  • Not Synced
    what they believed to be fatal
    electric shocks to a fellow participant
  • Not Synced
    when they got a question wrong,
  • Not Synced
    just because someone
    in a white coat told them too.
  • Not Synced
    But this story is a myth
    for three reasons.
  • Not Synced
    Firstly and most crucially,
    the lab coat wasn't white.
  • Not Synced
    It was, in fact, grey.
  • Not Synced
    Secondly, the participants
    were told before the study
  • Not Synced
    and reminded any time
    they raised a concern,
  • Not Synced
    that although the shocks were painful,
    they were not fatal
  • Not Synced
    and indeed caused
    no permanent damage whatsoever.
  • Not Synced
    And thirdly, participants
    didn't give the shocks
  • Not Synced
    just because someone
    in the coat told them to.
  • Not Synced
    When they were interviewed
    after the study,
  • Not Synced
    all the participants said
    that they firmly believed
  • Not Synced
    that the learning and punishment study
    served a worthy scientific purpose
  • Not Synced
    which would have
    enduring gains for science
  • Not Synced
    as opposed to the momentary
    non-fatal discomfort
  • Not Synced
    caused to the participants.
  • Not Synced
    Okay, so I've been talking
    for about 12 minutes now,
  • Not Synced
    and you've probably been sitting there
  • Not Synced
    listening to me, analyzing
    my speech patterns and body language
  • Not Synced
    and trying to work out if you should
    take any notice of what I'm saying,
  • Not Synced
    whether I'm telling the truth
    or whether I'm lying,
  • Not Synced
    but if so you've
    probably completely failed,
  • Not Synced
    because although we all think
    we can catch a liar
  • Not Synced
    from their body language
    and speech patterns,
  • Not Synced
    hundreds of psychological tests
    over the years have shown
  • Not Synced
    that all of us, including
    police officers and detectives,
  • Not Synced
    are basically at chance when it comes
    to detecting lies from body language
  • Not Synced
    and verbal patterns.
  • Not Synced
    Interestingly, there is one exception:
  • Not Synced
    TV appeals for missing relatives.
  • Not Synced
    It's quite easy to predict
    when the relatives are missing
  • Not Synced
    and when the appealers have in fact
    murdered the relatives themselves.
  • Not Synced
    So hoax appealers are more likely
    to shake their heads, to look away,
  • Not Synced
    and to make errors in their speech,
  • Not Synced
    whereas genuine appealers are more likely
  • Not Synced
    to express hope that the person
    will return safely
  • Not Synced
    and to avoid brutal language.
  • Not Synced
    So, for example, they might say
    "taken from us" rather than "killed."
  • Not Synced
    Speaking of which,
  • Not Synced
    it's about time I killed this talk,
  • Not Synced
    but before I do, I just want to give you
  • Not Synced
    in 30 seconds
  • Not Synced
    the overarching myth of psychology.
  • Not Synced
    So the myth is that psychology
  • Not Synced
    is just a collection
    of interesting theories,
  • Not Synced
    all of which say something useful
  • Not Synced
    and all of which have something to offer.
  • Not Synced
    What I hope to have shown you
    in the past few minutes
  • Not Synced
    is that this isn't true.
  • Not Synced
    What we need to do is assess
    psychological theories
  • Not Synced
    by seeing what predictions they make,
  • Not Synced
    whether that is that listening to Mozart
    makes you smarter,
  • Not Synced
    that you learn better when information
  • Not Synced
    is presented in your
    preferred learning style,
  • Not Synced
    or whatever it is, all of these
    are testable empirical predictions,
  • Not Synced
    and the only way we can make progress
  • Not Synced
    is to test these predictions
    against the data
  • Not Synced
    in tightly controlled
    experimental studies,
  • Not Synced
    and it's only by doing so
    that we can hope to discover
  • Not Synced
    which of these theories
    are well-supported,
  • Not Synced
    and which, like all the ones
    I've told you about today, are myths.
