5 ways to kill your dreams

  • Not Synced
    I dedicated the past years
    to understanding
  • Not Synced
    how people achieve their dreams.
  • Not Synced
    One would think about the
    dreams we have,
  • Not Synced
and the dent we want to leave
    leave in the universe.
  • Not Synced
It is striking to see how big of
    an overlap that is
  • Not Synced
between the dreams that we have and
    projects that never happen.
  • Not Synced
So I'm here to talk to you today about
five ways How Not to Follow Your Dreams
  • Not Synced
    One: believe in overnight success.
  • Not Synced
    You know the story, right?
  • Not Synced
The tech guy built a mobile app and
sold it very fast for a lot of money.
  • Not Synced
You know, the story may seem real,
  • Not Synced
    but I bet it's incomplete.
  • Not Synced
    If you go investigate further,
  • Not Synced
the guy has built 30 apps before
  • Not Synced
and he has done a masters
    on the topic, a Phd.
  • Not Synced
He has been working on the topic
    for like 20 years.
  • Not Synced
    This is really interesting,
  • Not Synced
I myself have a story in Brazil
that people think is an overnight success.
  • Not Synced
I come from a humble family,
  • Not Synced
and two weeks before the deadline
    to apply for MIT,
  • Not Synced
    I started the application process.
  • Not Synced
    I got in.
  • Not Synced
People may think it's an overnight success ,
  • Not Synced
but that only worked because for
the 17 years prior to that,
  • Not Synced
I took life and education seriously.
  • Not Synced
    Your overnight success story
    is always a result
  • Not Synced
of everything you've done in your
    life through that moment.
  • Not Synced
    Two: believe someone else has
    the answers for you.
  • Not Synced
    Coincidentally, people want to
    help out, right?
  • Not Synced
All sorts of people, your family,
    your friends, your business partners,
  • Not Synced
    they all have opinions on
    which path you should take.
  • Not Synced
"And let me tell you, go through
    this pipe."
  • Not Synced
    But wherever you go inside,
    there are other ways
  • Not Synced
you have to pick as well.
  • Not Synced
And you need to make those
    decisions yourself.
  • Not Synced
No one else has the perfect
    answers for your life.
  • Not Synced
And you need to keep picking
    those decisions, right?
  • Not Synced
The pipes are infinite and you're
    going to bump your head,
  • Not Synced
it's a part of the process.
  • Not Synced
    Three, and it's very subtle
    yet very important:
  • Not Synced
    decide to settle when
    growth is guaranteed.
  • Not Synced
So when your life is going great,
  • Not Synced
you have put together a great team,
  • Not Synced
    and you have growing revenue,
    everything is set.
  • Not Synced
    Time to settle.
  • Not Synced
When I launched my first book,
  • Not Synced
I worked really, really hard to
    distribute it everywhere in Brazil.
  • Not Synced
    With that, over 3 million
    people downloaded,
  • Not Synced
    over 50,000 people bought
    physical copies.
  • Not Synced
When I wrote a sequel, some
    impact was guaranteed.
  • Not Synced
Even if I did little, sales would be okay.
  • Not Synced
    But okay is never okay.
  • Not Synced
When you're growing towards a peak,
  • Not Synced
you need to work harder than ever
    and find yourself another peak.
  • Not Synced
Maybe if I did little, a couple hundred
    thousand people would read it,
  • Not Synced
    and that's great already.
  • Not Synced
But if I work harder than ever,
  • Not Synced
I can bring this number up to millions.
  • Not Synced
That's why I decided, with my new book,
to go to every single state of Brazil.
  • Not Synced
And I can already see a higher peak.
  • Not Synced
There's no time to settle down.
  • Not Synced
Fourth tip, and that's really important:
  • Not Synced
believe the fault is someone else's.
  • Not Synced
    I constantly see people saying,
  • Not Synced
"Yes, I had this great idea,
  • Not Synced
but no investor had the vision to invest.
  • Not Synced
Oh, I created this great product,
  • Not Synced
but, you know, the market is so bad,
    the sales didn't go well."
  • Not Synced
Or, "I can't find good talent, my team
    is so below expectations."
  • Not Synced
If you have dreams, it's your
    responsibility to make them happen.
  • Not Synced
Yes, it may be hard to find talent.
  • Not Synced
Yes, the market may be bad.
  • Not Synced
But if no one invested in your idea,
  • Not Synced
if no one bought your product,
  • Not Synced
for sure there is something there
    that is your fault.
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
    Definitely.
  • Not Synced
You need to get your dreams
    and make them happen.
  • Not Synced
And no one achieved their goals alone.
  • Not Synced
But if you didn't make them happen,
it's your fault and no one else's.
  • Not Synced
    Be responsible for your dreams.
  • Not Synced
And one last tip, and this one is
    really important as well:
  • Not Synced
believe that the only things that matter
    are the dreams themselves.
  • Not Synced
Once I saw an ad, and it was
    a lot of friends,
  • Not Synced
they were going up a mountain,
it was a very high mountain,
  • Not Synced
it was a lot of work,
  • Not Synced
you could see that they were sweating
    and this was tough
  • Not Synced
    and they were going up,
  • Not Synced
and they finally made it to the peak.
  • Not Synced
Of course, they decided to celebrate,
  • Not Synced
    I'm going to celebrate, so,
  • Not Synced
"Yes! We made it, we're at the top!"
  • Not Synced
    Two seconds later, one looks
    at the other and says,
  • Not Synced
    "Okay, let's go down."
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
Life is never about the goals themselves.
  • Not Synced
    Life is about the journey.
  • Not Synced
Yes, you should enjoy the goals themselves,
  • Not Synced
but people think that you when
    you have dreams,
  • Not Synced
and whenever you get to reaching
    one of those dreams,
  • Not Synced
it's a magical place where happiness
    will be all around.
  • Not Synced
But achieving a dream is a
    momentary sensation,
  • Not Synced
    and your life is not.
  • Not Synced
The only way to really achieve
    all of your dreams
  • Not Synced
is to fully enjoy every step
    of your journey.
  • Not Synced
    That's the best way.
  • Not Synced
    And your journey is simple
  • Not Synced
    --it's made of steps.
  • Not Synced
Some steps will be right on,
  • Not Synced
    sometimes you will trip.
  • Not Synced
If it's right on, celebrate, because
some people wait a lot to celebrate.
  • Not Synced
And if you tripped, turn that
    into something to learn.
  • Not Synced
    If every step becomes something
to learn or something to celebrate,
  • Not Synced
you will for sure enjoy the journey.
  • Not Synced
    So, five tips:
  • Not Synced
    Believe in overnight success,
  • Not Synced
    believe someone else has
    the answers for you,
  • Not Synced
    believe that when growth is
    guaranteed, you should settle down,
  • Not Synced
believe the fault is someone else's,
  • Not Synced
and believe that only the goals
    themselves matter.
  • Not Synced
Believe me, if you do that,
    you will destroy your dreams.
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
    Thank you.
  • Not Synced
    (Applause)
