What's your Rubik's cube? Tim Grunert at TEDxUniversityofNevada
-
0:20 - 0:22One of my hobbies,
is Rubik's cubing. -
0:22 - 0:23(Laughter)
-
0:23 - 0:25As childish as that may seem,
-
0:25 - 0:26I feel like this colorful little box
-
0:26 - 0:28is the best representation
-
0:28 - 0:30of the point that I'm going
to be trying to make to you today. -
0:30 - 0:32But, we'll comeback to that later
-
0:32 - 0:34so try to stick with me.
-
0:34 - 0:36First, I want to share with you guys
-
0:36 - 0:38some observations on the world around me
-
0:38 - 0:40from a 19 years old student's perspective.
-
0:40 - 0:42The way I see it,
-
0:42 - 0:44there's a big problem
in the world nowadays, -
0:44 - 0:46and that's that people overall
-
0:46 - 0:49are starting to become the same.
-
0:49 - 0:53I mean, it's if everyone
is constantly thinking -
0:53 - 0:55about what everyone else
-
0:55 - 0:58is doing or saying or thinking,
-
0:58 - 1:02that no one because of that
can live for themselves anymore. -
1:02 - 1:03I mean, just look around you
-
1:03 - 1:06with Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Vine
-
1:06 - 1:08our lives have almost become devoted
-
1:08 - 1:12to this idea of fishing
for likes and reposts. -
1:12 - 1:15It's as if the masses have grown
to cling to this idea -
1:15 - 1:17that most of what we are
-
1:17 - 1:18comes from what other people think of us
-
1:18 - 1:20and expect us to be,
-
1:20 - 1:22and then if you take them away
-
1:22 - 1:25then nothing means anything.
-
1:25 - 1:29But when we lay down at night
and look at ourselves, -
1:29 - 1:33how can we be satisfied living our lives
for those other people. -
1:33 - 1:38We're missing the fact
that confirmation and conformation -
1:38 - 1:42are the exact same thing.
-
1:42 - 1:45That when we constantly
seek the approval of others -
1:45 - 1:47we're not acting as ourselves anymore,
-
1:47 - 1:50we're simply acting
how that person would act -
1:50 - 1:52in our situation.
-
1:52 - 1:55Now, we have to rethink this lifestyle,
-
1:55 - 1:59we have to find a way
to become individuals again. -
1:59 - 2:01We have to begin to embrace
-
2:01 - 2:04the little things that make
each and everyone of us -
2:04 - 2:08absolutely unique.
-
2:08 - 2:10I want everyone to do something
with me for a second. -
2:10 - 2:13I want you take a moment
and look at yourself, -
2:13 - 2:15find something about you,
-
2:15 - 2:17maybe something not a lot of people know,
-
2:17 - 2:20some small simple unique thing
-
2:20 - 2:23that no one does quite like you do.
-
2:23 - 2:24Maybe it's a hobby,
-
2:24 - 2:28maybe math come really easy to you,
-
2:28 - 2:31maybe it's your smile,
-
2:31 - 2:35just something that you believe
defines you. -
2:35 - 2:37And I really hope that by the end of today
-
2:37 - 2:40everyone has at least one thing in mind.
-
2:40 - 2:42Because that's where it all starts,
-
2:42 - 2:46that's how you start to find that identity,
that individualism, -
2:46 - 2:51and that unique thing
will allow you to be happy as you, -
2:51 - 2:56no matter what anyone else has to say.
-
2:56 - 2:57Now I begin with the same idea,
-
2:57 - 3:01and that's because I believe
it is exactly these small things -
3:01 - 3:07that truly speak the largest volume
about who each person truly is. -
3:07 - 3:10If you don't believe me of,
use mine as an example. -
3:10 - 3:13So, I want everyone to look at this box
-
3:13 - 3:15and, what do you see?
-
3:15 - 3:17For most people it's a toy,
-
3:17 - 3:20some will agree,
"Yeah pretty tough puzzle," -
3:20 - 3:23others will say,
"I mean, what's the big deal? -
3:23 - 3:25I can probably look up a tutorial
how to solve it online. -
3:25 - 3:29I'm sure it's not that difficult."
-
3:29 - 3:32You see when you look at it,
it's insignificant, -
3:32 - 3:36but when I see it
I see very important lesson. -
3:36 - 3:39So I will try to show you that today.
-
3:39 - 3:41So we've all learned
from the very beginning -
3:41 - 3:43that everything is a whole lot easier
-
3:43 - 3:46when we work together as a team.
-
3:46 - 3:49But those of us who set
about finding that perfect team, -
3:49 - 3:52that perfect friend group,
our very first time, -
3:52 - 3:53are going to fail,
-
3:53 - 3:55and I mean we should,
-
3:55 - 3:57you know for most of us life
is not a fairy tale, -
3:57 - 3:59no matter how dashing the prince may be.
-
3:59 - 4:01(Laughter)
-
4:01 - 4:02As for the rest of us,
-
4:02 - 4:06we just have to keep turning the wheels
until as if by magic -
4:06 - 4:09everything falls into place.
-
4:09 - 4:11Now most people,
-
4:11 - 4:14when they see this beautiful picture
that they've painted for themselves, -
4:14 - 4:16this perfect friend group,
-
4:16 - 4:19they're too blinded
to do anything to try to ruin it. -
4:19 - 4:22These are those who conform,
-
4:22 - 4:25the people who are so focused
on keeping their picture pretty -
4:25 - 4:29that they can't even step back
and look at the entire 3D problem. -
4:29 - 4:33So this is the challenge
I have for you guys after today. -
4:33 - 4:34Be yourself,
-
4:34 - 4:37don't be afraid to rock the boat,
-
4:37 - 4:40because things will come back
together for you at the end, -
4:40 - 4:41and when you take a step back
-
4:41 - 4:45you'll see the progress
that you've truly made. -
4:45 - 4:48Now, a lot of people do get this far
-
4:48 - 4:52and they see that perfect picture,
that beautiful friend group, -
4:52 - 4:54that team that they've always wanted,
-
4:54 - 4:57and the other aspects of their lives
are starting to come along too. -
4:57 - 4:59But they're not finished yet,
-
4:59 - 5:02there are still pieces missing.
-
5:02 - 5:03They've not truly found that identity
-
5:03 - 5:07because they've not found
their unique qualities, -
5:07 - 5:09their Rubik's Cube.
-
5:09 - 5:11In fact, it's the Rubik's Cube that show us
-
5:11 - 5:14that progress cannot be made
-
5:14 - 5:16without twisting the gears.
-
5:16 - 5:20Without taking the chance
of ruining some of what we already have -
5:20 - 5:22in order to progress further.
-
5:22 - 5:25But if you've the ability to persevere
-
5:25 - 5:27and find what's truly unique to you
-
5:27 - 5:31and start living for yourself
not for those other people, -
5:31 - 5:37then you'll actually realize
that you were a part of a bigger picture -
5:37 - 5:39all along.
-
5:39 - 5:41And things get easier as you go,
-
5:41 - 5:43you know once you stop
to try to fit that mold -
5:43 - 5:47and start living for yourself
and find that confidence then, -
5:47 - 5:51the changes that you make
will have less and less of an impact on your team -
5:51 - 5:54and on the other important aspects
of your life as well. -
5:54 - 5:57Until you find yourself
so close to that self-actualization -
5:57 - 6:00that you're not afraid anymore.
-
6:00 - 6:04You now have the ability to finish strong
and then say to the world, -
6:04 - 6:09"Here I am, this is me."
-
6:09 - 6:12So yeah, it's just a toy,
-
6:12 - 6:15it's my Rubik's Cube.
-
6:15 - 6:17What's yours?
-
6:17 - 6:19(Applause)
Thank you. -
6:19 - 6:23(Applause)
