Part 1 Evolving Role

  • 0:00 - 0:02
    I haven't been in this
    charitable sector for long,
  • 0:02 - 0:04
    it's been about
    2 and a half years.
  • 0:04 - 0:10
    What I've seen is
    the charities bringing in
  • 0:10 - 0:14
    CEOs from the for-profit world
    or from the corporate world
  • 0:14 - 0:18
    to bring in a perspective
    into charities to bring perhaps
  • 0:18 - 0:21
    new ideas,
    new thinking, new disciplines
  • 0:21 - 0:23
    around marketing.
  • 0:23 - 0:24
    And then on
    the marketing side,
  • 0:24 - 0:28
    we've seen a significant
increase over the past three years
  • 0:28 - 0:30
    of organizations investing
  • 0:30 - 0:31
    in marketing.
  • 0:31 - 0:35
    So I think investment in
    paid advertising has gone up
  • 0:35 - 0:37
    about 600%,
  • 0:37 - 0:39
    albeit at a low base,
    over the past 3 years
  • 0:39 - 0:41
    according to AC Neilsen.
  • 0:41 - 0:44
    And getting more
    sophisticated around branding,
  • 0:44 - 0:47
    I think the charitable sector
    is recognizing the competition
  • 0:47 - 0:49
    is quite high.
  • 0:49 - 0:51
    80,000 charities on average,
  • 0:51 - 0:54
    it's a lot of different
    messages in the marketplace,
  • 0:54 - 0:57
    and that they need
    to stand out because
  • 0:57 - 1:00
    the donor dollars are decreasing
    and even volunteer's time.
  • 1:00 - 1:03
    There's only so many causes
    that you can volunteer for.
  • 1:03 - 1:06
    And I think they're finding
that in order to be able to
  • 1:06 - 1:08
    get their fair share,
    they have to make sure
  • 1:08 - 1:11
    that their message
    is in the marketplace.
