Future of worlds in gaming | Markeese Johnson | TEDxBaltimore

  • 0:02 - 0:04
    How many people play games?
  • 0:05 - 0:09
    That's a lot of adults.
  • 0:09 - 0:10
    (Laughter)
  • 0:10 - 0:12
    I am not talking about
    the Pacman games, anyway.
  • 0:12 - 0:15
    (Audience) You should
    have said that first!
  • 0:15 - 0:16
    (Laughter)
  • 0:16 - 0:22
So, you know the age-old story
of future games becoming virtual, right?
  • 0:24 - 0:28
    So, I think it's only a theory;
  • 0:30 - 0:33
    unless we have a huge
    breakthrough in gaming.
  • 0:34 - 0:37
    As technology stands currently,
I don't think it will work.
  • 0:41 - 0:47
    No, because people
    won't think it will work.
  • 0:47 - 0:51
    Not because we can't
but because people won't play it.
  • 0:51 - 0:55
    Gamers want immersive games
with as little movement as possible,
  • 0:57 - 0:58
and virtual games is not the way to go.
  • 0:58 - 1:02
Many games have tried to use
this idea of body moving games.
  • 1:02 - 1:05
These are seen on the Wii,
the PlayStation Move, and Xbox Kinect.
  • 1:06 - 1:10
All ideas are good and partially the same.
  • 1:10 - 1:13
They're trying to get you to feel
    like you're in the game,
  • 1:13 - 1:16
that you control the game with your body.
  • 1:16 - 1:21
But these ideas are not as successful
as the good old joystick and toys
  • 1:21 - 1:23
that most systems in games use till today.
  • 1:23 - 1:29
But people want emerging without losing
your breath and getting all sweaty.
  • 1:29 - 1:34
Let me tell you guys this:
we humans don't like to move a lot.
  • 1:36 - 1:40
    Especially, when we're trying
    to enjoy ourselves.
  • 1:40 - 1:43
    So, controllers are
the right way to go, right?
  • 1:43 - 1:48
How can we make a gaming more
    immersive without the physical properties?
  • 1:52 - 1:55
Just look back on how we did it back then.
  • 1:56 - 2:00
    Remember back then?
And no, I don't mean Packman.
  • 2:00 - 2:05
I mean when the Xbox and Playstation II
    were becoming popular.
  • 2:05 - 2:08
    Think back when the games
you played looked so real to you.
  • 2:10 - 2:11
    (Laughter)
  • 2:12 - 2:16
But now, if you look back on them
    today, they look terrible.
  • 2:16 - 2:21
We make games better by making
    the graphics and mechanics better.
  • 2:21 - 2:24
It gave us a better experience
    in our immersive game.
  • 2:24 - 2:27
This is possible with our new
    understanding about chips and computers
  • 2:27 - 2:30
    to add more memory
    and data in our systems.
  • 2:30 - 2:33
    They also give us
    an immersive gaming experience,
  • 2:33 - 2:35
by putting vibrators in out controllers
  • 2:35 - 2:38
to give you the effect of feeling
of what you see on the screen.
  • 2:38 - 2:42
In 3D TVs, which also allows
the characters and game elements to be
  • 2:42 - 2:44
    artificially in your world.
  • 2:44 - 2:47
    We all noticed this once
    in our gaming experience.
  • 2:47 - 2:49
But the immersion doesn't end there.
  • 2:49 - 2:54
    Games like Destiny , Skyrim,
    and other free roam games
  • 2:54 - 2:55
    create a whole other experience
  • 2:55 - 2:59
    because these games have focused
    on economies and adventures
  • 2:59 - 3:02
    instead of doing a mission
    and you're done.
  • 3:02 - 3:06
They have added a way where you can
do side missions, meet other people
  • 3:06 - 3:09
and instead of doing a mission
    to beat the game,
  • 3:09 - 3:12
you can find your own way
    to beat the game and level up;
  • 3:12 - 3:15
therefore adding this aspect of realism
  • 3:15 - 3:19
    by getting you to choose
    your own path and experience.
  • 3:20 - 3:22
    I believe that gaming communities
  • 3:22 - 3:26
    will continue to add on
    these life experiences and aspects.
  • 3:26 - 3:30
    Forget about the physical aspects
affecting what happens on the screen.
  • 3:31 - 3:34
I think that they will find
a way to create a better game
  • 3:34 - 3:37
    than we have ever imagined
with all the aspects of life.
  • 3:37 - 3:42
This will be done with graphics,
    sounds, mechanics,
  • 3:42 - 3:44
and the art of human creativity.
  • 3:46 - 3:48
    (Applause)

  • Who can let me know why the whole activity isn't visible on the 'revisions' tab?

Like here, on the "Activity" tab (If you look under 'Revisions' there is no trace of Juan Manuel Erquicia or Elisabeth Buffard. It seems Carol Mrad started a month ago, not 'yesterday' as 'Revision 1' seems to show.):
