Fighters and mourners of the Ukrainian revolution

    When I arrived in Kiev,

    on the first of February this year,

    Independence Square
    was under siege,
  • 0:08 - 0:12
    surrounded by police
    loyal to the government.

    The protestors who
    occupied Maidan,
  • 0:15 - 0:16
    as the square's known,
  • 0:16 - 0:18
    prepared for battle.
  • 0:18 - 0:24
    Stockpiling homemade weapons and
    mass-producing improvised body armor.
  • 0:24 - 0:27
    The EuroMaidan protests
    began peacefully
  • 0:27 - 0:29
    at the end of 2013
  • 0:29 - 0:32
    after the president of Ukraine,
    Viktor Yanukovych,
  • 0:32 - 0:36
    rejected a far-reaching accord
    with the European Union
  • 0:36 - 0:39
    in favor with stronger
    ties with Russia.
  • 0:39 - 0:42
    In response, tens of thousands
    of dissatisfied citizens
  • 0:42 - 0:44
    poured into central Kiev
  • 0:44 - 0:48
    to demonstrate against
    this allegiance.
  • 0:48 - 0:49
    As the months passed,
  • 0:49 - 0:54
    confrontations between police
    and civilians intensified.
  • 0:54 - 0:57
    I set up a makeshift
    portrait studio
  • 0:57 - 1:00
    by the barricades on (name) street.
  • 1:00 - 1:05
    There, I photographed the
    fighters against a black curtain,
  • 1:05 - 1:08
    a curtain that obscured the highly
    seductive and visual backdrop
  • 1:08 - 1:13
    of fire, ice and smoke.
  • 1:13 - 1:16
    In order to tell the individual
    human stories here,
  • 1:16 - 1:19
    I felt that I needed to
    remove the dramatic visuals
  • 1:19 - 1:22
    that had become so
    familiar and repetitive
  • 1:22 - 1:24
    within the mainstream media.
  • 1:24 - 1:27
    What I was witnessing
    was not only news,
  • 1:27 - 1:29
    but also history.
  • 1:29 - 1:30
    With this realization,
  • 1:30 - 1:33
    I was free from the
    photojournalistic conventions
  • 1:33 - 1:36
    of the newspaper and
    the magazine.
  • 1:36 - 1:41
    (names of people) were all ordinary men,
  • 1:41 - 1:45
    with ordinary lives from ordinary towns.
  • 1:45 - 1:48
    But the elaborate costumes that they
    had bedecked themselves in
  • 1:48 - 1:49
    were quite extraordinary
  • 1:49 - 1:51
    I say the word "costume" because
  • 1:51 - 1:56
    these were not clothes that had been
    issued or coordinated by anyone.
  • 1:56 - 1:57
    They were improvised uniforms
  • 1:57 - 2:00
    made up of decommissioned
    military equipment:
  • 2:00 - 2:06
    irregular combat fatigues and trophies
    taken from the police.
  • 2:06 - 2:10
    I became interested in the way they
    were choosing to represent themselves,
  • 2:10 - 2:14
    this outward expression of masculinity,
  • 2:14 - 2:16
    the ideal of the warrior.
  • 2:16 - 2:20
    I worked slowly, using
    an analog film camera
  • 2:20 - 2:24
    with a manual focusing loop
    and a handheld light meter.
  • 2:24 - 2:26
    The process is old fashioned.
  • 2:26 - 2:29
    It gives me time to speak
    with each person
  • 2:29 - 2:32
    and to look at them in silence
  • 2:32 - 2:36
    while they look back at me.
  • 2:36 - 2:39
    Rising tensions culminated
    in the worst day of violence
  • 2:39 - 2:41
    on the 20th of February,
  • 2:41 - 2:44
    which became known as
    Bloody Thursday.
  • 2:44 - 2:46
    Snippers, loyal to the government,
  • 2:46 - 2:51
    started firing on the civilians and the
    protestors in Institutskaya street.
  • 2:51 - 2:55
    Many were killed in a
    very short space of time.
  • 2:55 - 2:59
    The reception of the Hotel Ukraina
    became a makeshift morge.
  • 2:59 - 3:02
    There were lines of
    bodies laid in the street.
  • 3:02 - 3:06
    And there was blood
    all over the pavements.
  • 3:06 - 3:07
    The following day,
  • 3:07 - 3:10
    President Yanukovych fled Ukraine.
  • 3:10 - 3:12
    In all, three months of protests
  • 3:12 - 3:16
    resulted in more than 120 confirmed dead.
  • 3:16 - 3:18
    and many more missing.
  • 3:18 - 3:20
    History unfolded quickly,
  • 3:20 - 3:24
    but celebration remained
    elusive in Maidan.
  • 3:24 - 3:26
    As the days passed in
    Kiev's central square,
  • 3:26 - 3:28
    streams of armed fighters
  • 3:28 - 3:31
    were joined by tens and
    thousands of ordinary people
  • 3:31 - 3:35
    filling the streets in an act
    of collective mourning.
  • 3:35 - 3:38
    Many were women who
    often carried flowers
  • 3:38 - 3:42
    that they had brought to lay as
    marks of respect for the dead.
  • 3:42 - 3:43
    They came day after day
  • 3:43 - 3:49
    and they covered the square
    with millions of flowers.
  • 3:49 - 3:51
    Sadness enveloped Maidan.
  • 3:51 - 3:54
    It was quiet and I could
    hear the birds singing.
  • 3:54 - 3:56
    I hadn't heard that before.
  • 3:56 - 3:59
    I stopped women as they
    approached the barracades
  • 3:59 - 4:03
    to lay their tributes and
    asked to make their picture.
  • 4:03 - 4:06
    Most women cried when I
    photographed them.
  • 4:06 - 4:08
    On the first day, my fixer
    Emine and I cried
  • 4:08 - 4:13
    with almost every woman
    who visited our studio.
  • 4:13 - 4:16
    There had been such a
    noticeable absence of women
  • 4:16 - 4:18
    up until that point.
  • 4:18 - 4:20
    And the color of their pastel coats,
  • 4:20 - 4:22
    their shiny handbags,
  • 4:22 - 4:24
    and the bunches of red carnations,
  • 4:24 - 4:26
    white tulips and yellow roses
  • 4:26 - 4:29
    that they carried jarred with
    the blackened square
  • 4:29 - 4:33
    and the blackened men
    who were encamped there.
  • 4:33 - 4:36
    It is clear to me that these
    two sets of pictures
  • 4:36 - 4:39
    don't make much
    sense without the other.
  • 4:39 - 4:41
    They are about men and women
    and the way we are
  • 4:41 - 4:44
    -- not the way we look, but the
    way we are.
  • 4:44 - 4:47
    They speak about different
    gender roles in conflict,
  • 4:47 - 4:51
    not only in Maidan and
    not only in Ukraine.
  • 4:51 - 4:55
    Men fight most wars and
    women mourn them.
  • 4:55 - 4:57
    If the men showed the
    ideal of the warrior,
  • 4:57 - 5:01
    then the women showed the
    implications of such violence.
  • 5:01 - 5:03
    When I made these pictures,
  • 5:03 - 5:07
    I believed that I was documenting
    the end of violent events in Ukraine.
  • 5:07 - 5:10
    But now I understand that it is
    a record of the beginning.
  • 5:10 - 5:14
    Today, the death toll
    stands around 3,000,
  • 5:14 - 5:18
    while hundreds of thousands
    have been displaced.
  • 5:18 - 5:21
    I was in Ukraine again six weeks ago.
  • 5:21 - 5:24
    In Maidan, the barricades
    have been dismantled
  • 5:24 - 5:28
    and the paving stones which we used
    as weapons during the protests
  • 5:28 - 5:32
    replaced so that traffic flows freely
    through the center of the square.
  • 5:32 - 5:37
    The fighters, the women
    and the flowers are gone.
  • 5:37 - 5:41
    A huge billboard depicting geese
    flying over a wheat field
  • 5:41 - 5:44
    covers the burnt-out shell of the
    trade union's building
  • 5:44 - 5:45
    and proclaims,
  • 5:45 - 5:47
    "Glory to Ukraine.
  • 5:47 - 5:48
    Glory to heroes."
  • 5:48 - 5:49
