-
0:08 - 0:09Relaxation
-
0:09 - 0:10Freedom.
-
0:10 - 0:11Exercise and Health.
-
0:11 - 0:13Useful, does not pollute.
-
0:13 - 0:15Friendship and health.
-
0:15 - 0:17Transportation and exercise.
-
0:17 - 0:18Gathering.
-
0:18 - 0:20In harmony with nature.
-
0:20 - 0:22Health and passion.
-
0:22 - 0:23Helps to keep you healthy
-
0:23 - 0:26Possibility of citizen participation.
-
0:26 - 0:27Happiness and Freedom.
-
0:27 - 0:30Share quality time with friends.
-
0:30 - 0:32It's sort of energizing to ride a bike.
-
0:32 - 0:34Exercise and fun.
-
0:34 - 0:36An activity to share with the family.
-
0:41 - 0:47I woud like you to go some years back,
-
0:47 - 0:52right where your mom or dad
taught you how to ride a bicycle. -
0:54 - 0:56You may be able to remember
-
0:56 - 1:01how they would hold
the seat on your bike, -
1:01 - 1:03so that you wouldn't lose balance?
-
1:04 - 1:12Or the first time you were able to place
both feet on the pedals without falling. -
1:14 - 1:19How many of you had a wonderful time
learning how to ride your bike? -
1:20 - 1:24Or even spending time
with that family member -
1:24 - 1:25who taught you how to ride it?
-
1:27 - 1:32But I believe that hardly any of us
have received some vital education. -
1:32 - 1:37This is, how many of you were taught
that while being on a bike, -
1:37 - 1:39we also had rights and obligations?
-
1:39 - 1:44How many of you were told
to respect the traffic lights -
1:44 - 1:48or to respect the crosswalks?
-
1:49 - 1:55This is due to the fact
that while being children or even adults -
1:55 - 1:59we tend to see the bicycle as a toy.
-
2:01 - 2:05Then the problem lies with
the cyclists who lose their identity. -
2:05 - 2:09The cyclists don't know
whether they are riding a toy, -
2:09 - 2:13or should they behave
as a pedestrian or as a vehicle? -
2:15 - 2:22How can they consider the bicycle
as a means of transportation? -
2:23 - 2:25Thus, the identity is missing.
-
2:25 - 2:29We are not being backed up
by infrastructure or by clear regulations. -
2:33 - 2:36Let us try now to remember.
-
2:36 - 2:39How do children learn
from their environment? -
2:39 - 2:41They learn from their families.
-
2:41 - 2:45Children learn based on models.
-
2:45 - 2:50Social learning is based
on copying their environment. -
2:50 - 2:55Children and adults do the same.
-
2:55 - 2:59Our own cyclists learn
from their environment. -
3:00 - 3:05Just like children,
cyclists learn from peers. -
3:05 - 3:08This is how they build up
their own knowledge: -
3:08 - 3:10They go on the right side of the road,
-
3:10 - 3:13wearing helmets and safety equipment,
-
3:13 - 3:19and even learning that sidewalks
are exclusively for pedestrians. -
3:19 - 3:25They come to the conclusion that being
on a bicycle is not to play around. -
3:25 - 3:28That's when they become
a new means of transportation, -
3:28 - 3:33and start sharing that knowledge
with the rest of the people in the city. -
3:37 - 3:41The Copenhagenize Consulting is a study
-
3:41 - 3:47happening around the world to determine
which cities are bike-friendly. -
3:48 - 3:52Guadalajara may surprise you;
it's in the 12th place! -
3:57 - 4:00So, now you may be wondering,
how could this be -
4:01 - 4:05when we know that Guadalajara
does not have the vital infrastructure; -
4:06 - 4:09we don't even have
cycle paths in the city. -
4:10 - 4:13Well, most of the work that has been done,
-
4:13 - 4:18or at least what puts us
in the 12th place, -
4:18 - 4:21is at the end of the day,
the citizen participation, -
4:21 - 4:27done throughout
all the different activities. -
4:27 - 4:31For instance, In Guadalajara
we have the RecreActiva weekend cycleway. -
4:31 - 4:33We can also find the night city cycling.
-
4:33 - 4:38We also are able to rent bicycles
on the downtown area. -
4:38 - 4:43So, in the end, Guadalajara
has more than 15,000 cyclists, -
4:43 - 4:45throughout the whole city.
-
4:46 - 4:51These cyclists are slowly but steadily
increasing cycling activities in the city, -
4:54 - 5:00and on the streets and learning
from each other how to behave -
5:00 - 5:05so we can cycle safely on the streets.
-
5:07 - 5:11We have a lot of benefits
when riding a bike. -
5:11 - 5:14This chart shows
four dimensions to review. -
5:15 - 5:17We have the economical aspect.
-
5:17 - 5:21If we compare the monthly expense
that we have with a car, -
5:23 - 5:28we are roughly spending about
1,727 pesos including gas for a car. -
5:29 - 5:33If we compare this number
with the bicycle maintenance -
5:33 - 5:37or the monthly expense we would spend
somewhere around 75 pesos. -
5:40 - 5:42A big difference.
-
5:44 - 5:46Now, if we go to the social aspect:
-
5:46 - 5:49when driving a car,
we ride inside our bubble. -
5:49 - 5:53All isolated, complaining about
all the things around us. -
5:53 - 5:57Complaining about traffic,
the person who is cutting us off. -
6:00 - 6:04However, if you are riding a bike,
we are building a social web. -
6:04 - 6:06Something, that we've been losing.
-
6:08 - 6:09On the environmental aspect:
-
6:09 - 6:14If we compare for instance,
-
6:14 - 6:21for each liter of fuel consumed
by a car that runs about 13 Km, -
6:21 - 6:29this car would consume or generate
2.32 Kg of CO₂ to our environment. -
6:29 - 6:32Now, if we compare that with a cyclist,
-
6:32 - 6:38for every 13 Km, he's only
generating 0.268 kg of CO₂. -
6:39 - 6:46If we add the number of annual deaths
due to the air pollution, -
6:46 - 6:50the number is higher
than for riding a a bicycle. -
6:50 - 6:53The number is of about 14,700 people
-
6:53 - 6:56that die every year
due to the bad quality of air. -
6:59 - 7:01We haven't even discussed
all the health benefits. -
7:02 - 7:03As we all know, when we perform
-
7:03 - 7:07a physical activity,
we have tons of benefits -
7:07 - 7:13which improve our personal health,
and the bicycle adds some more. -
7:14 - 7:20We also need to consider the difference
on the time to travel within the city. -
7:20 - 7:25Whether talking about
short or longer distances, -
7:25 - 7:31bicycles are way more efficient
for reducing our timing. -
7:31 - 7:36Last year, we had a race nation wide,
-
7:36 - 7:41where 22 different cities participated
sharing their time distance: -
7:42 - 7:48pedestrians, bicycles, cars, motorcycles.
-
7:48 - 7:51Out of these 22 cities,
-
7:51 - 7:5611 were won by the bicycle
with an average distance -
7:57 - 8:05of between nine and 11 Km,
-
8:05 - 8:10and specifically in Guadalajara
the bicycle won in an average of 9.8 Km, -
8:10 - 8:15where a bike took an average time
of 22 minutes during rush hour -
8:15 - 8:21against an automobile
that did it on 33 minutes average. -
8:22 - 8:25Therefore, we can clearly see
there are lots of benefits -
8:25 - 8:28by riding on these two wheels.
-
8:30 - 8:34At the end of the day, as we say:
-
8:34 - 8:37"The fear is not riding on a bike."
-
8:37 - 8:41(Applause)
