The fear is not riding on a bike | Vania Contreras | TEDxGuadalajara 2013

  • 0:08 - 0:09
    Relaxation
  • 0:09 - 0:10
    Freedom.
  • 0:10 - 0:11
    Exercise and Health.
  • 0:11 - 0:13
    Useful, does not pollute.
  • 0:13 - 0:15
    Friendship and health.
  • 0:15 - 0:17
    Transportation and exercise.
  • 0:17 - 0:18
    Gathering.
  • 0:18 - 0:20
    In harmony with nature.
  • 0:20 - 0:22
    Health and passion.
  • 0:22 - 0:23
    Helps to keep you healthy
  • 0:23 - 0:26
    Possibility of citizen participation.
  • 0:26 - 0:27
    Happiness and Freedom.
  • 0:27 - 0:30
    Share quality time with friends.
  • 0:30 - 0:32
It's sort of energizing to ride a bike.
  • 0:32 - 0:34
    Exercise and fun.
  • 0:34 - 0:36
An activity to share with the family.
  • 0:41 - 0:47
I woud like you to go some years back,
  • 0:47 - 0:52
right where your mom or dad
taught you how to ride a bicycle.
  • 0:54 - 0:56
You may be able to remember
  • 0:56 - 1:01
    how they would hold
    the seat on your bike,
  • 1:01 - 1:03
so that you wouldn't lose balance?
  • 1:04 - 1:12
Or the first time you were able to place
both feet on the pedals without falling.
  • 1:14 - 1:19
How many of you had a wonderful time
learning how to ride your bike?
  • 1:20 - 1:24
    Or even spending time
    with that family member
  • 1:24 - 1:25
who taught you how to ride it?
  • 1:27 - 1:32
But I believe that hardly any of us
    have received some vital education.
  • 1:32 - 1:37
This is, how many of you were taught
that while being on a bike,
  • 1:37 - 1:39
we also had rights and obligations?
  • 1:39 - 1:44
How many of you were told
    to respect the traffic lights
  • 1:44 - 1:48
    or to respect the crosswalks?
  • 1:49 - 1:55
This is due to the fact
that while being children or even adults
  • 1:55 - 1:59
we tend to see the bicycle as a toy.
  • 2:01 - 2:05
    Then the problem lies with
the cyclists who lose their identity.
  • 2:05 - 2:09
    The cyclists don't know
whether they are riding a toy,
  • 2:09 - 2:13
    or should they behave
as a pedestrian or as a vehicle?
  • 2:15 - 2:22
How can they consider the bicycle
    as a means of transportation?
  • 2:23 - 2:25
    Thus, the identity is missing.
  • 2:25 - 2:29
We are not being backed up
by infrastructure or by clear regulations.
  • 2:33 - 2:36
Let us try now to remember.
  • 2:36 - 2:39
    How do children learn
    from their environment?
  • 2:39 - 2:41
    They learn from their families.
  • 2:41 - 2:45
    Children learn based on models.
  • 2:45 - 2:50
    Social learning is based
    on copying their environment.
  • 2:50 - 2:55
Children and adults do the same.
  • 2:55 - 2:59
    Our own cyclists learn
    from their environment.
  • 3:00 - 3:05
    Just like children,
    cyclists learn from peers.
  • 3:05 - 3:08
This is how they build up
    their own knowledge:
  • 3:08 - 3:10
They go on the right side of the road,
  • 3:10 - 3:13
    wearing helmets and safety equipment,
  • 3:13 - 3:19
    and even learning that sidewalks
    are exclusively for pedestrians.
  • 3:19 - 3:25
They come to the conclusion that being
on a bicycle is not to play around.
  • 3:25 - 3:28
    That's when they become
    a new means of transportation,
  • 3:28 - 3:33
    and start sharing that knowledge
with the rest of the people in the city.
  • 3:37 - 3:41
The Copenhagenize Consulting is a study
  • 3:41 - 3:47
happening around the world to determine
    which cities are bike-friendly.
  • 3:48 - 3:52
    Guadalajara may surprise you;
    it's in the 12th place!
  • 3:57 - 4:00
So, now you may be wondering,
    how could this be
  • 4:01 - 4:05
    when we know that Guadalajara
    does not have the vital infrastructure;
  • 4:06 - 4:09
    we don't even have
    cycle paths in the city.
  • 4:10 - 4:13
Well, most of the work that has been done,
  • 4:13 - 4:18
or at least what puts us
    in the 12th place,
  • 4:18 - 4:21
is at the end of the day,
    the citizen participation,
  • 4:21 - 4:27
    done throughout
    all the different activities.
  • 4:27 - 4:31
    For instance, In Guadalajara
we have the RecreActiva weekend cycleway.
  • 4:31 - 4:33
We can also find the night city cycling.
  • 4:33 - 4:38
We also are able to rent bicycles
    on the downtown area.
  • 4:38 - 4:43
    So, in the end, Guadalajara
    has more than 15,000 cyclists,
  • 4:43 - 4:45
    throughout the whole city.
  • 4:46 - 4:51
These cyclists are slowly but steadily
increasing cycling activities in the city,
  • 4:54 - 5:00
and on the streets and learning
from each other how to behave
  • 5:00 - 5:05
so we can cycle safely on the streets.
  • 5:07 - 5:11
We have a lot of benefits
    when riding a bike.
  • 5:11 - 5:14
    This chart shows
    four dimensions to review.
  • 5:15 - 5:17
    We have the economical aspect.
  • 5:17 - 5:21
If we compare the monthly expense
that we have with a car,
  • 5:23 - 5:28
    we are roughly spending about
1,727 pesos including gas for a car.
  • 5:29 - 5:33
    If we compare this number
    with the bicycle maintenance
  • 5:33 - 5:37
or the monthly expense we would spend
    somewhere around 75 pesos.
  • 5:40 - 5:42
    A big difference.
  • 5:44 - 5:46
Now, if we go to the social aspect:
  • 5:46 - 5:49
    when driving a car,
    we ride inside our bubble.
  • 5:49 - 5:53
    All isolated, complaining about
    all the things around us.
  • 5:53 - 5:57
    Complaining about traffic,
the person who is cutting us off.
  • 6:00 - 6:04
However, if you are riding a bike,
we are building a social web.
  • 6:04 - 6:06
    Something, that we've been losing.
  • 6:08 - 6:09
    On the environmental aspect:
  • 6:09 - 6:14
    If we compare for instance,
  • 6:14 - 6:21
for each liter of fuel consumed
by a car that runs about 13 Km,
  • 6:21 - 6:29
this car would consume or generate
2.32 Kg of CO₂ to our environment.
  • 6:29 - 6:32
Now, if we compare that with a cyclist,
  • 6:32 - 6:38
for every 13 Km, he's only
    generating 0.268 kg of CO₂.
  • 6:39 - 6:46
If we add the number of annual deaths
    due to the air pollution,
  • 6:46 - 6:50
    the number is higher
than for riding a a bicycle.
  • 6:50 - 6:53
The number is of about 14,700 people
  • 6:53 - 6:56
    that die every year
due to the bad quality of air.
  • 6:59 - 7:01
    We haven't even discussed
    all the health benefits.
  • 7:02 - 7:03
As we all know, when we perform
  • 7:03 - 7:07
    a physical activity,
    we have tons of benefits
  • 7:07 - 7:13
    which improve our personal health,
and the bicycle adds some more.
  • 7:14 - 7:20
We also need to consider the difference
on the time to travel within the city.
  • 7:20 - 7:25
    Whether talking about
    short or longer distances,
  • 7:25 - 7:31
    bicycles are way more efficient
    for reducing our timing.
  • 7:31 - 7:36
Last year, we had a race nation wide,
  • 7:36 - 7:41
    where 22 different cities participated
    sharing their time distance:
  • 7:42 - 7:48
    pedestrians, bicycles, cars, motorcycles.
  • 7:48 - 7:51
    Out of these 22 cities,
  • 7:51 - 7:56
11 were won by the bicycle
    with an average distance
  • 7:57 - 8:05
of between nine and 11 Km,
  • 8:05 - 8:10
    and specifically in Guadalajara
the bicycle won in an average of 9.8 Km,
  • 8:10 - 8:15
where a bike took an average time
of 22 minutes during rush hour
  • 8:15 - 8:21
    against an automobile
that did it on 33 minutes average.
  • 8:22 - 8:25
    Therefore, we can clearly see
    there are lots of benefits
  • 8:25 - 8:28
by riding on these two wheels.
  • 8:30 - 8:34
At the end of the day, as we say:
  • 8:34 - 8:37
"The fear is not riding on a bike."
  • 8:37 - 8:41
    (Applause)
