How I built a jet suit

    He had a passion for flight,

    as you can kind of sense

    from that rather dubious
    1970s [office-leaving present,]
  • 0:16 - 0:19
    and some 40 years after that was created,
  • 0:19 - 0:21
    a small group of us got together
  • 0:21 - 0:23
    to have a go --
  • 0:23 - 0:27
    a run at the whole challenge of flight
    that inspired people for years,
  • 0:27 - 0:29
    and do it in a very different kind of way.
  • 0:29 - 0:31
    And that's the journey I'd like
    to share with you now.

    The starting hypothesis was one
    of the human mind and body --
  • 0:35 - 0:37
    as you've seen for the last few days here,
  • 0:37 - 0:39
    is an amazing construct --
  • 0:39 - 0:43
    and what if you augmented
    that wonderful machine
  • 0:43 - 0:44
    with just the right technology?
  • 0:44 - 0:47
    If you approach flight
    in that kind of [real] way,
  • 0:47 - 0:48
    where could you get to?
  • 0:48 - 0:51
    So my training partner here
    back in London --
  • 0:51 - 0:52
    [Denton] --
  • 0:52 - 0:55
    is doing a much better job
    of that kind of stuff than me.
  • 0:55 - 0:56
    [Guess what, it's London].
  • 0:56 - 0:59
    The idea was that you augment that.
  • 0:59 - 1:00
    And so, how do you augment that?
  • 1:00 - 1:02
    Well, we bought one of these.
  • 1:03 - 1:06
    So this is a micro gas turbine.
  • 1:06 - 1:08
    This was ground zero.
  • 1:08 - 1:11
    That little piece of [gear]
    proved really quite impressive,
  • 1:11 - 1:13
    so we got two in a field.
  • 1:15 - 1:17
    The real hero here, by the way,
  • 1:17 - 1:18
    right in the background,
  • 1:18 - 1:20
    there's a lady tending some vegetables.
  • 1:20 - 1:23
    She does a brilliant job
    of trying to ignore us for a while --
  • 1:23 - 1:25
    (Laughter)
  • 1:26 - 1:28
    I think the only thing
    less happy is the grass,
  • 1:28 - 1:31
    that we did probably damage quite badly.
  • 1:31 - 1:33
    You get an idea of the thrust here
  • 1:33 - 1:35
    when I try to hold them horizontally
    and somewhat fail.
  • 1:35 - 1:37
    That's around 50 kilos of thrust there.
  • 1:38 - 1:39
    We were quite impressed with that.
  • 1:39 - 1:41
    We thought, we're getting somewhere.
  • 1:41 - 1:45
    So there's only one sensible way
    to go from there ...
  • 1:45 - 1:46
    you get four.
  • 1:46 - 1:47
    (Laughter)

    [I have.... a lot] watching these back.
  • 1:53 - 1:56
    So, then we thought well, let's try
    and spread the load a bit.
  • 1:56 - 1:58
    The legs are designed
    to take the load,
  • 1:58 - 2:00
    so why don't we spread it out a bit?
  • 2:01 - 2:03
    That bit was good.
  • 2:03 - 2:05
    The harness --
  • 2:05 - 2:07
    a nice idea but it didn't really work,
  • 2:07 - 2:08
    as you'll see now.
  • 2:08 - 2:11
    This whole journey was very much
    about trying things --
  • 2:11 - 2:12
    (Laughter)
  • 2:12 - 2:14
    Yeah, it really didn't work, did it?
  • 2:14 - 2:18
    Trying things and learning
    by failing at them most of the time.
  • 2:18 - 2:23
    And that included failing by falling over.
  • 2:23 - 2:24
    If you notice,
  • 2:24 - 2:26
    we've got five engines here --
  • 2:26 - 2:29
    not to be put off by the fact
    one was in [maintenance...],
  • 2:29 - 2:30
    and then I --
  • 2:30 - 2:31
    (Laughter)
  • 2:31 - 2:32
    And then I pinched a fuel line.
  • 2:32 - 2:33
    So again, good learning.
  • 2:33 - 2:35
    We learned not to do that again.
  • 2:35 - 2:37
    This was a blind alley.
  • 2:37 - 2:38
    (Laughter)
  • 2:38 - 2:39
    This was three on each arm --
  • 2:39 - 2:40
    that was ridiculous.
  • 2:40 - 2:43
    That was 70 kilos on each arm.
  • 2:43 - 2:45
    Again, struck that one off.
  • 2:45 - 2:46
    (Laughter)
  • 2:46 - 2:49
    But we were starting to make
    some really quite convincing progress,
  • 2:49 - 2:52
    just enough to make you
    believe that maybe --
  • 2:52 - 2:54
    maybe we could get there.
  • 2:54 - 2:55
    You can see,
  • 2:55 - 2:56
    look --
  • 2:56 - 2:57
    tantalizing.
  • 2:57 - 2:59
    The model of one on each leg
    and two on each arm,
  • 2:59 - 3:01
    on paper that was enough thrust.
  • 3:02 - 3:05
    And then we did what
    I'm about to show you now,
  • 3:05 - 3:07
    and I still love watching this one.
  • 3:10 - 3:15
    This was our first six-second,
    reasonably coherent flight.
  • 3:15 - 3:19
    (Applause)

    That was the point where
    this endeavor went from
  • 3:23 - 3:25
    "I'm really not sure
    this is going to work,"
  • 3:25 - 3:27
    to "Oh my god, it does work."
  • 3:27 - 3:28
    From there on we refined it,
  • 3:28 - 3:31
    but we carried on falling over a lot.
  • 3:31 - 3:34
    Falling over, like I say, is definitely
    the best way to learn.
  • 3:35 - 3:38
    After a while we starting
    re-refining the layout of all of this.
  • 3:38 - 3:39
    You'll see,
  • 3:39 - 3:40
    that's stability and control,
  • 3:40 - 3:42
    there's no wires there or anything,
  • 3:42 - 3:45
    that's a combination of us
    refining the technology,
  • 3:45 - 3:48
    including the tupperwear box
    on the back for the electronics --
  • 3:48 - 3:49
    nice step --
  • 3:49 - 3:51
    and actually learning
    the balance and control.
  • 3:52 - 3:55
    I'm now going to save your ears
    for the next short piece
  • 3:55 - 3:56
    and talk over it,
  • 3:56 - 3:59
    because after a while the jet engine
    noise is a bit annoying.

    This is only a few weeks ago.

    You can see the stability and control
    is really quite nice,

    and I'd like to think this somewhat
    validates that starting hypothesis
  • 4:07 - 4:09
    that the human mind and body,
  • 4:09 - 4:11
    if properly augmented in that way,
  • 4:11 - 4:13
    can achieve some pretty cool stuff.

    I'm not looking at --
  • 4:15 - 4:18
    I'm not thinking about where
    I'm moving my arms at that stage.

    I'm looking at the objective
    of where I want to get to,
  • 4:21 - 4:23
    and a bit like riding a bike,
  • 4:23 - 4:24
    my arms are just doing their thing.
  • 4:24 - 4:26
    It's a very strange experience.

    So where is all this headed?
  • 4:28 - 4:29
    I'll talk over this landing --
  • 4:29 - 4:31
    I think I land in this one.
  • 4:32 - 4:35
    I don't think anybody's going to
    go down to Walmart
  • 4:35 - 4:38
    or take their kids to school
    in any of this stuff for a while,
  • 4:38 - 4:41
    but the team at Gravity are building
    some awesome technology
  • 4:41 - 4:43
    that's going to make
    this look like child's play.
  • 4:43 - 4:44
    We're working on some things
  • 4:44 - 4:48
    that are going to seek to bring
    this pretty unusual experience of flight
  • 4:48 - 4:49
    to a wider audience,
  • 4:49 - 4:51
    beyond the events
    and displays we're doing.
  • 4:51 - 4:53
    We're even starting to look
    for Pilot Two and Three,
  • 4:53 - 4:55
    so if there's any volunteers ...
  • 4:55 - 4:56
    I've got this vision.
  • 4:56 - 4:57
    It's going to sound audacious,
  • 4:57 - 4:59
    but hey, let's just stick it out there --
  • 4:59 - 5:01
    that one day maybe we can
    rise up above a beach,
  • 5:01 - 5:03
    fly up and down the coastline of it,
  • 5:03 - 5:04
    rise up a little bit higher
  • 5:04 - 5:07
    with the safety kit we're working on
    to make this achievable.
  • 5:07 - 5:10
    Then, low over the horizon,
    comes a Hercules with a ramp down,
  • 5:10 - 5:11
    and as it comes past you,
  • 5:11 - 5:14
    you then start picking up speed
    and see if we can intercept --
  • 5:14 - 5:17
    from the rear, not from the front,
    that would be a mistake --
  • 5:17 - 5:19
    and then try and land in the back.
  • 5:19 - 5:20
    That's a little way off at the moment.
  • 5:20 - 5:22
    But this is also,
  • 5:22 - 5:24
    if I take a big step back from this,
  • 5:24 - 5:26
    this is also a very
    personal journey for me.

    Back to that lovely photo,
  • 5:29 - 5:31
    or photo in a picture.

    Sadly, my father took
    his own life when I was 15,
  • 5:34 - 5:37
    and left an awful lot
    of unfulfilled ambition.

    He was a wonderful inventor,
  • 5:39 - 5:40
    maverick --
  • 5:40 - 5:41
    creator.
  • 5:41 - 5:43
    And I'd just like to think
  • 5:43 - 5:44
    if it was possible,
  • 5:44 - 5:45
    if he was looking down,
  • 5:45 - 5:46
    he would be --
  • 5:46 - 5:50
    he'd certainly be smiling at some
    of the things we've gone and done here,
  • 5:50 - 5:51
    I think.

    So, it's really a tribute to him.

    doing the demo straight after this,

    The worst case scenario:

    we don't get a clean start,

    or we get an unplanned failure
    while I'm actually flying around,

    but this is why we keep it very low,

    so the worst is I just look like an idiot
    and fall on my rear, as I said.

    So you can all enjoy that if that happens.
