How I built a jet suit

  • 0:01 - 0:03
    Michael Browning:
  • 0:03 - 0:04
    engineer,
  • 0:04 - 0:06
    innovator --
  • 0:06 - 0:07
    inventor really,
  • 0:07 - 0:08
    and inspiring father.
  • 0:09 - 0:10
He had a passion for flight,
  • 0:10 - 0:11
as you can kind of sense
  • 0:11 - 0:16
    from that rather dubious
    1970s [office-leaving present,]
  • 0:16 - 0:19
and some 40 years after that was created,
  • 0:19 - 0:21
a small group of us got together
  • 0:21 - 0:23
    to have a go --
  • 0:23 - 0:27
a run at the whole challenge of flight
    that inspired people for years,
  • 0:27 - 0:29
and do it in a very different kind of way.
  • 0:29 - 0:31
And that's the journey I'd like
    to share with you now.
  • 0:32 - 0:35
    The starting hypothesis was one
of the human mind and body --
  • 0:35 - 0:37
as you've seen for the last few days here,
  • 0:37 - 0:39
    is an amazing construct --
  • 0:39 - 0:43
    and what if you augmented
    that wonderful machine
  • 0:43 - 0:44
    with just the right technology?
  • 0:44 - 0:47
    If you approach flight
in that kind of [real] way,
  • 0:47 - 0:48
    where could you get to?
  • 0:48 - 0:51
    So my training partner here
    back in London --
  • 0:51 - 0:52
    [Denton] --
  • 0:52 - 0:55
is doing a much better job
of that kind of stuff than me.
  • 0:55 - 0:56
    [Guess what, it's London].
  • 0:56 - 0:59
The idea was that you augment that.
  • 0:59 - 1:00
And so, how do you augment that?
  • 1:00 - 1:01
Well, we bought one of these.
  • 1:01 - 1:03
  • 1:03 - 1:06
So this is a [microgas] turbine.
  • 1:06 - 1:08
    This was ground zero.
  • 1:08 - 1:11
That little piece of gear proved
    really quite impressive,
  • 1:11 - 1:13
so we got two in a field.
  • 1:15 - 1:17
The real hero here is the little --
  • 1:17 - 1:18
    right in the background --
  • 1:18 - 1:19
there's a lady tending some vegetables.
  • 1:20 - 1:22
    She does a brilliant job
of trying to ignore us for a while --
  • 1:22 - 1:25
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
    I think the only thing
    less happy is the grass
  • Not Synced
that we did probably damage quite badly.
  • Not Synced
You get an idea of the thrust here
where I try to hold them horizontally
  • Not Synced
    and somewhat fail.
  • Not Synced
That's around 50 kilos of thrust there.
  • Not Synced
So we were quite impressed with that.
  • Not Synced
We thought we were getting somewhere.
  • Not Synced
So there's only one sensible way
    to go from there ...
  • Not Synced
    you get four.
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
    I [.... a lot] watching these back.
  • Not Synced
So, then we thought well, let's try
and spread the load a bit,
  • Not Synced
you know the legs are designed
    to take the load,
  • Not Synced
so why do we spread it out a bit?
  • Not Synced
    That bit was good.
  • Not Synced
    The harness --
  • Not Synced
a nice idea but it didn't really work,
  • Not Synced
    as you'll see now.
  • Not Synced
This whole journey was very much
    about trying things --
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
    Yeah, it really didn't work.
  • Not Synced
    Trying things and learning
by failing at them most of the time.
  • Not Synced
And that included failing by falling over.
  • Not Synced
    If you notice,
  • Not Synced
we've got five engines here --
  • Not Synced
not to be put off by the fact
one was in [maintenance slow go],
  • Not Synced
    and then I --
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
And then I pinched a fuel line.
  • Not Synced
    So again, good learning,
  • Not Synced
we learned not to do that again.
  • Not Synced
    This was a blind alley.
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
This was three on each arm --
  • Not Synced
    that was ridiculous.
  • Not Synced
That was 70 kilos on each arm.
  • Not Synced
    Again, struck that one off.
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
But we, you know, we were starting to make
    some really quite convincing progress,
  • Not Synced
just enough to make you believe
    that maybe --
  • Not Synced
    maybe we could get there.
  • Not Synced
    You can see,
  • Not Synced
    look --
  • Not Synced
    tantalizing.
  • Not Synced
And the model of one on each leg
    and two on each arm,
  • Not Synced
on paper that was enough thrust.
  • Not Synced
    And then we did what
I'm about to show you now,
  • Not Synced
and I still love watching this one.
  • Not Synced
This was our first six second,
    reasonably coherent flight.
  • Not Synced
    (Applause)
  • Not Synced
That was the point where this
    endeavor went from
  • Not Synced
    "I'm really not sure
    this is going to work,"
  • Not Synced
to "Oh my god, it does work."
  • Not Synced
And from there on we then refined it,
  • Not Synced
but we carried on falling over a lot.
  • Not Synced
Falling over, like I say, is definitely
    the best way to learn.
  • Not Synced
And after a while we starting
re-refining the layout of all of this.
  • Not Synced
    You'll see,
  • Not Synced
I mean, that's stability and control,
  • Not Synced
there's no wires there or anything,
  • Not Synced
    that's a combination of us
    refining the technology,
  • Not Synced
    including the tupperwear box
on the back for the electronics --
  • Not Synced
    nice step --
  • Not Synced
    and actually learning
    the balance and control.
  • Not Synced
I'm now going to save your ears
    for the next short piece
  • Not Synced
    and talk over it,
  • Not Synced
because after a while the jet engine
    noise is a bit annoying.
  • Not Synced
    As you see hear,
  • Not Synced
this is only a few weeks ago.
  • Not Synced
You can see the stability and control
    is really quite nice,
  • Not Synced
and I'd like to think this somewhat
    validates that starting hypothesis
  • Not Synced
that the human mind and body,
  • Not Synced
if properly augmented in that way,
  • Not Synced
can achieve some pretty cool stuff.
  • Not Synced
    I mean, look I say,
  • Not Synced
    I'm not looking at --
  • Not Synced
I'm not thinking about where I'm moving
    my arms at that stage.
  • Not Synced
    I'm look at the objective
of where I want to get to,
  • Not Synced
and a bit like riding a bike,
  • Not Synced
my arms are just doing their thing.
  • Not Synced
    It's a very strange experience.
  • Not Synced
So where is all this headed?
  • Not Synced
I'll talk over this landing --
  • Not Synced
I think I land in this one.
  • Not Synced
    I don't think anybody's going to
    get out of Walmart
  • Not Synced
or taking the kids in school in any
of this stuff for a while,
  • Not Synced
but the team at Gravity are building
    some awesome technology
  • Not Synced
    that's going to make
    this look like child's play.
  • Not Synced
    We're working on some things
  • Not Synced
that are going to seek to bring
this pretty unusual experience of flight
  • Not Synced
    to a wider audience,
  • Not Synced
    beyond the events
    and displays we're doing.
  • Not Synced
And we're even starting to look
    for Pilot Two and Three,
  • Not Synced
so if there's any volunteers ...
  • Not Synced
    And I've got this vision,
  • Not Synced
and it's going to sound audacious,
  • Not Synced
but hey, let's just stick it out there --
  • Not Synced
that one day maybe we can,
  • Not Synced
you know, rise up above a beach,
  • Not Synced
fly up and down the coastline of it,
  • Not Synced
rise up a little bit higher
  • Not Synced
with some of the safety kit we're
working on to make this achievable,
  • Not Synced
and then low over the horizon
comes a Hercules with a ramp down,
  • Not Synced
and as it comes past you,
  • Not Synced
you then start picking up speed
and see if we can intercept --
  • Not Synced
from the rear, not from the front,
that would be a mistake --
  • Not Synced
and then try and land in the back.
  • Not Synced
That's a little way off at the moment.
  • Not Synced
    But this is also,
  • Not Synced
if I take a big step back from this,
  • Not Synced
    this is also a very
    personal journey for me.
  • Not Synced
    Back to that lovely photo,
  • Not Synced
    or photo in a picture.
  • Not Synced
Sadly, my father took his own life
    when I was 15,
  • Not Synced
    and left an awful lot
    of unfulfilled ambition.
  • Not Synced
    He was a wonderful inventor,
  • Not Synced
    maverick --
  • Not Synced
    creator.
  • Not Synced
And I'd just like to think
  • Not Synced
    if it was possible,
  • Not Synced
    if he was looking down,
  • Not Synced
    he would be --
  • Not Synced
he'd certainly be smiling at some
of the things we've gone and done
  • Not Synced
    I think here.
  • Not Synced
So, it's really a tribute to him.
  • Not Synced
    Thank you very much.
  • Not Synced
    (Applause)
  • Not Synced
    I'm probably more nervous about
doing the demo straight after this,
  • Not Synced
    so yeah,
  • Not Synced
I've got a lot of things
    to get done today.
  • Not Synced
    The worst case scenario:
  • Not Synced
we don't get a clean start,
  • Not Synced
or we get an unplanned failure
    while I'm actually flying around,
  • Not Synced
but this is why we keep it very low,
  • Not Synced
so the worst is I just look like an idiot
and fall on my own rear,
  • Not Synced
    as they say.
  • Not Synced
So you can all enjoy that if that happens.
  • Not Synced
