Programming your mind for success | Carrie Green | TEDxManchester
-
0:06 - 0:09So, I want to get you all
involved in my talk today. -
0:09 - 0:11and we are going to test out
a little experiment. -
0:11 - 0:15but in order for me to do that,
I need somebody to come up here -
0:15 - 0:17and join me on the stage.
-
0:17 - 0:19So please, can I have a volunteer?
-
0:20 - 0:22Don't all run at once.
-
0:22 - 0:24So, you can come
and join me up here with Ted. -
0:25 - 0:27We can have a little cup of tea together.
-
0:27 - 0:29Anyone? Come on!
-
0:29 - 0:32You just come up, whoever wants,
I am not going to pick anyone. -
0:32 - 0:34Someone has to come up,
-
0:34 - 0:37and there are volunteers down here,
to bring you up onto the stage. -
0:37 - 0:39Oh, here's somebody.
-
0:39 - 0:41(Applause)
-
0:47 - 0:50It's a bit of an obstacle course, I think,
-
0:51 - 0:53but I promise it's worth it.
-
0:57 - 0:59(Laughter)
-
0:59 - 1:01Poor person.
-
1:02 - 1:04Woo, thank you.
-
1:04 - 1:05What's your name?
-
1:05 - 1:06Volunteer: Ian.
-
1:06 - 1:08Carrie Green: Ian, thank you so much Ian
-
1:08 - 1:11I have something for you,
you just won £20. -
1:11 - 1:14There you go, thank you so much,
you can go, sit back down now. -
1:14 - 1:16A big round of applause!
-
1:16 - 1:18(Applause)
-
1:23 - 1:27So, my question to you is this:
-
1:29 - 1:31Why didn't you volunteer?
-
1:31 - 1:34What stopped you from coming up here?
-
1:34 - 1:36(Laughter)
-
1:36 - 1:39My guess is that was probably
for one of these reasons; -
1:39 - 1:41Fear.
-
1:41 - 1:43Fear of coming up here in front
of nearly 1000 people. -
1:43 - 1:45It's pretty damn scary.
-
1:45 - 1:49Or maybe it was fear of the unknown,
because you had no idea -
1:49 - 1:50what I was going to get you to do.
-
1:50 - 1:51Maybe you thought,
-
1:51 - 1:54"She might ask me to do something
I'm not able to do, -
1:54 - 1:56and I'll look like a complete prat."
-
1:56 - 1:59Or maybe it was because of obstacles.
-
1:59 - 2:01There are a lot of obstacles in this room.
-
2:01 - 2:04Maybe you're at the back,
and you just thought, -
2:04 - 2:07"I'm so far away, it's dark,
there're a lot of tables in my way, -
2:07 - 2:10I'll probably fall over some
of them like a fool, -
2:10 - 2:12and I just can't do it,
it's too difficult, -
2:12 - 2:14someone else will have
to volunteer for me." -
2:14 - 2:17Or maybe it was just lack of motivation.
-
2:17 - 2:21Maybe you just couldn't be bothered
to move and come up here. -
2:21 - 2:25But no matter what your reason was,
your decision started up here; -
2:25 - 2:27in your mind.
-
2:27 - 2:30Because the moment I said,
"Please, can I have a volunteer?" -
2:30 - 2:33Thoughts will have started
flooding into your mind. -
2:33 - 2:36That little voice inside your head
would have started talking to you, -
2:36 - 2:38and maybe for some of you, it was saying,
-
2:38 - 2:40"Oh god, what is this girl
going to get us to do? -
2:40 - 2:42I don't want to go up there,
-
2:42 - 2:44please, don't make us do
anything really stupid." -
2:44 - 2:47And then, maybe for some other people,
-
2:47 - 2:50maybe for some other
people you were thinking, -
2:50 - 2:52maybe down at the front you were like,
-
2:52 - 2:54"Oh gosh, I don't want
to do this, look away, -
2:54 - 2:58avoid eye contact, avoid eye contact,
then she won't pick me!" -
2:58 - 3:00And then maybe for some of you
the moment I said, -
3:00 - 3:02"Please, can I have a volunteer?"
-
3:02 - 3:05Maybe, fear, doubts, and worry
just flooded through you -
3:05 - 3:08at the prospect of actually
coming up here, -
3:08 - 3:10of coming up here in front
of so many people. -
3:10 - 3:13And then, for those of you
that did volunteer, -
3:13 - 3:15you were thinking
something entirely different. -
3:15 - 3:19You were thinking things maybe like,
"Oh, she wants a volunteer, -
3:19 - 3:22I wonder what she's going to get us to do,
how exciting, I'll do it" -
3:22 - 3:24Or maybe some of you thought,
-
3:24 - 3:27"Oh my gosh this is really awkward,
no one is volunteering, -
3:27 - 3:29so I'm going to have to step up and do it"
-
3:30 - 3:33But for those of you
that didn't volunteer, -
3:33 - 3:36you missed out on the chance to win £20.
-
3:37 - 3:39But this experiment isn't about the money.
-
3:39 - 3:44This experiment demonstrates
the power of your mind. -
3:44 - 3:47The fact that what is going on
up in your head -
3:47 - 3:50has such a huge impact on
the actions that you take, -
3:50 - 3:54on the decisions you make,
and the things that you experience. -
3:54 - 3:56And it's not just in silly
situations like this, -
3:56 - 3:59when people miss out
amazing opportunities. -
3:59 - 4:02People are missing out on incredible
opportunities all of the time. -
4:02 - 4:04because of what is going on their head,
-
4:04 - 4:09because they are making bad decisions
based off a really bad frame of mind. -
4:10 - 4:12You know, those kind
of self-limiting thoughts like: -
4:12 - 4:14"I can't do that",
-
4:14 - 4:15"I'm not good enough",
-
4:15 - 4:17or, "I don't have the time or the money".
-
4:17 - 4:19Or maybe it's that you think,
-
4:19 - 4:21"I can't be bothered;
I'll just do it tomorrow". -
4:22 - 4:24But then, you never do it,
-
4:24 - 4:28and so these wonderful ideas,
and these incredible potentials -
4:28 - 4:32stay locked up inside,
and you never do anything with them. -
4:32 - 4:36and that is exactly what was happening
to me a few years ago. -
4:36 - 4:39It was the summer of 2005,
and I had just finished studying -
4:39 - 4:42my full first year of law
at the University of Birmingham. -
4:42 - 4:46I had completely run out of money,
and I was like, what am I going to do? -
4:46 - 4:48So I started to look around for jobs,
-
4:48 - 4:52and I was looking around and found
absolutely nothing appealing. -
4:52 - 4:54So, I was looking around
for more opportunities, -
4:54 - 4:57and eventually found this opportunity.
-
4:57 - 5:01It was to start my very own
mobile phone unlocking business -
5:01 - 5:04which basically meant
that if you have a mobile phone, -
5:04 - 5:06and it was locked to a certain network,
-
5:06 - 5:08and say you want to go
travelling to Australia -
5:08 - 5:10and use an Australian sim card,
-
5:10 - 5:12you could come to the website
and unlock your phone. -
5:12 - 5:15There were just a few massive
problems with this; -
5:15 - 5:17first, I didn't know
much about mobile phones -
5:17 - 5:20beyond the fact that they
made calls and sent texts, -
5:20 - 5:22let alone mobile phone unlocking.
-
5:22 - 5:25And I had no idea how to build
an online business. -
5:25 - 5:28But the only other opportunity
was to sell sweets at Cirque du Soleil. -
5:28 - 5:31so I was like sell sweets
at Cirque du Soleil, -
5:31 - 5:32or start my own business.
-
5:32 - 5:35So, I went with the idea
of starting my own business, -
5:35 - 5:36it sounded a way more adventurous.
-
5:36 - 5:39So, I got started,
and I realised really quickly, -
5:39 - 5:42that when you don't have
a clue of what to do, -
5:42 - 5:45the only thing you can do
is ask for help, and that is what I did. -
5:45 - 5:47So, I asked for help and within
a few short weeks, -
5:47 - 5:51I put together probably
the world's worst website. -
5:51 - 5:55I discovered Google AdWords
as a way to drive traffic to the website, -
5:55 - 5:59and with a credit card
and spending a limit of £30 a day, -
5:59 - 6:02my business was officially up and running.
-
6:02 - 6:05Then over the next couple of years,
when I wasn't studying for my degree, -
6:05 - 6:08I was learning how to build this business;
-
6:08 - 6:09I was reading books,
-
6:09 - 6:11I was listening to audio programs,
-
6:11 - 6:13and in my final year,
I went to night school -
6:13 - 6:15to learn more about web development.
-
6:15 - 6:18I graduated in 2007
with an amazing degree -
6:18 - 6:21and a business that was flying.
-
6:21 - 6:23And I decided that being an entrepreneur
-
6:23 - 6:26was going to be way more fun
than being a lawyer. -
6:26 - 6:29So I set my sights high
and I decided to build, -
6:29 - 6:31- to take the business global -
-
6:31 - 6:33to build a successful global business.
-
6:33 - 6:35So, we got a new supplier based in America
-
6:35 - 6:38who can unlock practically
every phone under the sun. -
6:38 - 6:41We redid the website,
we expanded the team, -
6:41 - 6:43we got real good at online marketing,
-
6:43 - 6:46and within a few years, we were receiving
-
6:46 - 6:48over 100 000 hits
to the website every month. -
6:48 - 6:52And we were selling thousands
and thousands of codes every single month, -
6:52 - 6:56and I had reached my goal
to build a successful global business. -
6:56 - 6:58But there was one massive problem.
-
6:59 - 7:01I was miserable.
-
7:01 - 7:05I was running this business
predominantly from my home office, -
7:05 - 7:09where I lived in an apartment; my second
bedroom was turned into an office. -
7:09 - 7:13And I felt completely lonely,
totally isolated and lost. -
7:13 - 7:15Something that I think
so many people experience -
7:15 - 7:17but not very many of us talk about.
-
7:17 - 7:19And I crumbled.
-
7:19 - 7:24I started to question everything
and I started to think questions like: -
7:24 - 7:25What am I doing?
-
7:25 - 7:28What is the point of all of this?
-
7:28 - 7:31The more I thought about those
questions, the more confused I felt. -
7:31 - 7:32And the more confused I felt,
-
7:32 - 7:35the more these negative thoughts
which cloud my mind, -
7:35 - 7:38the more I began to doubt everything,
and worry about everything, -
7:38 - 7:40and just question everything.
-
7:40 - 7:44And as the months rolled by,
I became more and more negative, -
7:44 - 7:46more and more self-defeatist,
-
7:46 - 7:51and literally, this positive optimistic
and "go get it "person that I once was, -
7:51 - 7:53had just disappeared.
-
7:53 - 7:56I'd become totally negative
and self-sabotaging. -
7:56 - 7:57I'd come up with ideas,
-
7:57 - 8:00I'd shoot them down,
I'd talk to myself out of it. -
8:00 - 8:04Then it got to 2010 and I felt like
I was in complete despair. -
8:05 - 8:08And so I packed my bags
and I went travelling to Australia -
8:08 - 8:11in the hope of having an epiphany.
-
8:11 - 8:16Spent three months traveling
around Australia, no epiphany, -
8:16 - 8:18and I was just like:
what am I supposed to do? -
8:18 - 8:23So then I came back to the UK, and well,
even more miserable than before, -
8:23 - 8:25because all of my problems
were still waiting for me, -
8:25 - 8:27and the weather was rubbish.
-
8:27 - 8:29Then I was like, "What am I going to do?"
-
8:29 - 8:33So the next few months, I found myself
being suffocated by my problems. -
8:33 - 8:36you know where you feel like
you can't get rid of these doubts -
8:36 - 8:39and these worries
and it was all I'd focus on. -
8:39 - 8:41I'd come up with ideas,
I'd find opportunities, -
8:41 - 8:44and I'd just talk myself out of it,
thinking that I couldn't do it. -
8:44 - 8:50And then finally, in 2011,
I figured out where I was going wrong. -
8:50 - 8:54And I believe I was going wrong
for two massive reasons: -
8:54 - 8:58the first reason was that
yes, I wanted to be successful, -
8:58 - 8:59and quite frankly,
-
8:59 - 9:02doesn't every single person
in this room wants to be successful? -
9:02 - 9:06But mobile phone unlocking
was not my dream. -
9:07 - 9:10At the time, I was reading this book
by Michael Gerber called "The E-Myth", -
9:10 - 9:13and in "The E-Myth",
there is a chapter on primary aims. -
9:13 - 9:17Michael Gerber says:
Imagine walking into a room; -
9:18 - 9:21sat in the room,
are your friends and family, -
9:21 - 9:25and as you walk down the center
of the room, you see a box. -
9:25 - 9:30And as you get to the front of the room
you realize that you are in the box, -
9:30 - 9:32and it's your funeral.
-
9:32 - 9:36And he says, "What kind of things
do you want people to be saying -
9:36 - 9:39about the kind of life that you lived,
-
9:39 - 9:41about the kind of person that you were,
-
9:41 - 9:43and the kind of things that you achieved?"
-
9:43 - 9:47And I realized, I had no idea.
-
9:48 - 9:51So there was no wonder
that I felt so off track. -
9:51 - 9:54I had never ever been on track
-
9:55 - 9:58And the second reason
why I think went wrong, -
9:58 - 10:01is because of what was going on up here;
what was going on in my head. -
10:01 - 10:05All these doubts, all these worries,
all this self-limiting belief. -
10:05 - 10:08I came across a quote
by Anthony Robbins that said, -
10:08 - 10:14"Your destiny is determined by the choices
you make. Choose now. Choose well." -
10:15 - 10:20And I realized that I was
responsible for this misery; -
10:20 - 10:23I was responsible for the fact
that I was stuck in a rut. -
10:23 - 10:26I remember looking at my life thinking
I am waking up every single day -
10:26 - 10:28and focusing on my problems.
-
10:28 - 10:32I am waking up every day and giving
so much focus and attention -
10:32 - 10:36to all of these awful thoughts,
these doubts, and these worries. -
10:36 - 10:39I am coming up with ideas
and I am shooting them down, -
10:39 - 10:43I am talking myself out of doing
anything whatsoever. -
10:43 - 10:47And I realized that if I wanted
to live an incredible life -
10:47 - 10:50and achieve amazing things,
- and I really did - -
10:50 - 10:54that I had to get my mind to be
on the same wavelength as me. -
10:54 - 10:58I realized that I had to figure out
what it was that I wanted to achieve; -
10:58 - 11:02why I was wanted to achieve it,
why it actually meant something to me. -
11:02 - 11:05I had to figure out the kind of person
that I needed to become, -
11:05 - 11:07in order to make it happen.
-
11:07 - 11:11And then, I had to program
my mind to make it happen. -
11:11 - 11:15I had to program my mind for success.
-
11:15 - 11:18And that is exactly what I ended up doing,
-
11:18 - 11:20"Mission Success" began.
-
11:20 - 11:24And so I started this off by thinking
about: what do I actually want? -
11:24 - 11:28And so I looked at my life and I thought,
"I love being an entrepreneur, -
11:28 - 11:31I love coming up with ideas
and turning them into reality -
11:31 - 11:32it is so much fun."
-
11:32 - 11:34And then looked
at my problems and thought, -
11:34 - 11:37"I feel really lonely and lost
as an entrepreneur." -
11:37 - 11:40And I looked at them with
a different perspective. -
11:40 - 11:43Rather than feeling bad about it,
I thought, "What can I do about it? -
11:43 - 11:47There must be other people out there that
are in exactly the same position as me." -
11:47 - 11:52So I came up with this idea to create
the Female Entrepreneur Association, -
11:52 - 11:54and it sounded so official.
-
11:54 - 11:56And I was doing it,
and I had this massive idea, -
11:56 - 11:58I would create this global network
-
11:58 - 12:00of thousands of women
from all over the world -
12:00 - 12:03and help to inspire them and connect them
-
12:03 - 12:06and just help to empower them
to build successful businesses. -
12:06 - 12:10But I had no idea,
how I was going to do this. -
12:10 - 12:14Then I was like, "Right, I need to program
my mind to make this happen." -
12:14 - 12:16So I started by becoming consciously aware
-
12:16 - 12:18of the things I was thinking every day,
-
12:19 - 12:21and whenever I caught myself
thinking of something like, -
12:21 - 12:23"Carrie, who is going to come
to this website? -
12:23 - 12:26Who are you to give advice to anyone?
-
12:26 - 12:28This is rubbish,
this is a ridiculous idea, -
12:28 - 12:30you're never going to be able to do it."
-
12:30 - 12:33Every time I caught myself saying
something like that,I would stop myself, -
12:33 - 12:37and I realized that I had the power
to take control over my thoughts -
12:37 - 12:40rather than letting them control me.
-
12:40 - 12:44I knew that I could stop myself
from thinking these things. -
12:44 - 12:45And I did,
-
12:45 - 12:48I replaced the negative rubbish
annoying thoughts, -
12:48 - 12:50and told them to shut up,
-
12:50 - 12:53and I replaced them with positive
thoughts that were empowering me, -
12:53 - 12:57thoughts that were actually helping me
to move towards my goal. -
12:57 - 13:00I also started to listen
to guided visualization, -
13:00 - 13:02to program my subconscious
mind for success. -
13:02 - 13:05And I got really into doing visualizations
-
13:05 - 13:09vividly picturing what I wanted
to achieve, seeing it happen, -
13:09 - 13:13and then feeling it happen, like
it was happening right then and there, -
13:13 - 13:16just like all the top athletes do.
-
13:16 - 13:19I got so clear on what
I wanted to make happen, -
13:19 - 13:23and since then my life
has totally changed. -
13:23 - 13:26I've built one of the largest online
networking groups of female entrepreneurs, -
13:26 - 13:28with over 100 000 women involved.
-
13:28 - 13:32And then I came up with this crazy
idea to launch a digital magazine, -
13:32 - 13:36which then became the fastest growing
digital magazine for female entrepreneurs. -
13:36 - 13:39When I created it, I made
this wish list in my mind -
13:39 - 13:41of all the people I wanted
on the front cover; -
13:41 - 13:45these best-selling authors,
these incredibly successful entrepreneurs. -
13:45 - 13:48I had no idea how I would make it happen,
but I was so convinced it would. -
13:48 - 13:52I then put their faces
on mock-ups of the front cover, -
13:52 - 13:54printed them off and stuck them
on my goal board, -
13:54 - 13:57and just visualized them
being on the front cover; -
13:57 - 13:59visualized what it would
feel like the moment -
13:59 - 14:01I'd send out an email to my network.
-
14:01 - 14:03And I could say to them,
"Hey everyone, -
14:03 - 14:06this person's on the front cover
this month, how exciting!" -
14:06 - 14:09I got so unbelievably clear
about what I wanted to do. -
14:09 - 14:11People would come up to me and say,
-
14:11 - 14:12"How are you going
to make this happen?" -
14:12 - 14:15I was like, "I don't know,
but I am going to make it happen." -
14:15 - 14:16And it did happen,
-
14:16 - 14:17So then I thought,
-
14:17 - 14:20"What other crazy goals
could I make happen? -
14:20 - 14:22What else is possible?"
-
14:22 - 14:24So I set more crazy goals for myself.
-
14:24 - 14:26I was like, "I want to go
to Buckingham Palace, -
14:26 - 14:30I want to go to the House of Lords,
I want to speak at the House of Commons." -
14:30 - 14:32And I set more crazy goals for myself.
-
14:32 - 14:35And last year every single one
of them happened. -
14:35 - 14:41And I realized that if I could
get my mind to be certain, -
14:41 - 14:43that I could make something happen,
-
14:43 - 14:47that somehow I would figure out
a way, and I always have. -
14:48 - 14:50Because success is no accident.
-
14:50 - 14:54Living an incredible life is no accident.
-
14:54 - 14:57You have to do it on purpose.
-
14:57 - 15:01and it starts by knowing exactly
what is it that you want to achieve, -
15:01 - 15:03knowing why you want to achieve it,
-
15:03 - 15:08knowing the kind of person that you
need to become in order to make it happen, -
15:08 - 15:12and then programming
your mind to make it happen. -
15:12 - 15:16Because you just have one life
in which to achieve everything, -
15:16 - 15:19that you are going to achieve,
so you have to act accordingly. -
15:19 - 15:20Thank you so much.
-
15:20 - 15:23(Applause)
