-
My name is Rachel Reid and I just
-
graduated from Point Loma Nazarene
-
University with my bachelors in Child and
-
Adolescent development and I'm honoured
-
to be here today, to talk to you all about
-
um, my experience using live text to
-
create my senior e-portfolio and to find
-
my professional voice.
-
I want to be a pediatric occupational
-
therapist and I'm currently in the process
-
of applying to graduate schools for that.
-
Each senior is required to take the
senior seminar course
-
during their senior year
-
and.. it's through that course that we
make our senior e-portfolios
-
and I took that in the spring, um,
it was very helpful
-
um, with discovering my professional voice
and reflecting on the last four years
-
of my education and just tying everything
together to create um, this piece.
-
So this is the introduction.
I have a picture and my cover letter and
-
resume at the bottom, and then the first
section was Professional Statements
-
and this was the most difficult section
for me, and it took weeks of writing
-
and revising and talking to my professor
and um, just a lot of brainstorming
-
to figure out what my
professional philosophy is.
-
And then the internship part and the
work experience was my favorite part
-
to write about.
-
Both semesters in my senior year, I had
um, internships through two different
-
pediatric occupational therapy clinics.
I created an internship project for a
-
twelve-year-old visual perception
client, I provided the picture
-
and then she asked her to adjust the
square so that the lines and the dots
-
would match the picture.
-
I also included my community involvement,
I volunteered in my church in the
-
Children's Ministry and I was the student
leader for the down syndrome Easter Egg
-
hunt this year, and I was on the
leadership team for special Olympics.
-
And then I was also involved with, uh,
food distribution in a
-
low income neighborhood.
-
And then for the body of work, I included
six different projects from throughout
-
my major classes at Point Loma.
One of them has a very special place
-
in my heart.
And the development of children with
-
special needs class, every student was
assigned to a disorder to research
-
and to create a um, parent and family
resource on, and the um, disorder
-
that I was randomly assigned to was
Sensory Processing Disorder.
-
I didn't know what that was, I
didn't know what kind of treatment
-
children would need for that,
and through that project I
-
discovered the field of occupational
therapy.
-
So, I wanted to show you this project.
This was my favorite to create,
-
it just means a lot.
This is where I talked about what is
-
Sensory Processing Disorder and it's
basically when a child has
-
difficulty um, with processing and
responding to sensory stimulating.
-
The last section, the references section,
I was able to get four letters of
-
recommendation for graduate schools.
-
So overall, using live text was such a
helpful resource and discovering my
-
professional voice and, even like,
learning more about myself
-
and preparing me for grad school,
and I plan on, um, using this as a tool
-
with graduate school and um,
submitting along with my applications
-
when I apply this fall.
So it-it just really showed who I am more
-
than even a paper e-portfolio
could show and I'm very thankful
-
that I have this opportunity. -chuckles-
Thank you. -audience applauds-
