Why do ambitious women have flat heads?

    When I wrote my memoir,

    the publishers were really confused.
  • Not Synced
    Was it about me as a child refugee
  • Not Synced
    or a woman who set up a high-tech
    software company
  • Not Synced
    back in the 1960s,
  • Not Synced
    one that went public, and eventually
    employed over 8,000 people?
  • Not Synced
    Or was it as a mother of an autistic child?
  • Not Synced
    Or as a philanthropist who has
    now given away serious money?
  • Not Synced
    Well, it turns out, I'm all of these.
  • Not Synced
    Let me tell you my story.
  • Not Synced
    All that I am steams from when
    I got onto a train in Vienna,
  • Not Synced
    part of the kinder-transport that saved
    nearly 10,000 Jewish children
  • Not Synced
    from Nazi Europe.
  • Not Synced
    I was 5-years-old, clutching the hand
    of my 9-year-old sister
  • Not Synced
    and had very little idea as to
    what was going on .
  • Not Synced
    "What is England and why am I going there?"
  • Not Synced
    I'm only alive because so long ago,
    I was helped my generous strangers.
  • Not Synced
    I was lucky, and doubly-lucky
    to be later united
  • Not Synced
    with my birth parents.
  • Not Synced
    But, sadly, I never bonded with them again.
  • Not Synced
    But I've done more in the seven decades
    since that miserable day
  • Not Synced
    my mother put me on the train
  • Not Synced
    than I would ever have dreamed possible.
  • Not Synced
    And I love England, my adopted country
  • Not Synced
    with a passion that perhaps someone
    who has lost their human rights
  • Not Synced
    can feel.
  • Not Synced
    I decided to make mine a life
    that was worth saving.
  • Not Synced
    And then, I just got on with it.
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
    Let me take you back to the early 1960s.
  • Not Synced
    To get past the gender issues of the time,
  • Not Synced
    I set up my own software house
    at one of the first such startups in Britain.
  • Not Synced
    It was also a company of women,
    a company for women,
  • Not Synced
    an early social business.
  • Not Synced
    And people laughed at the very idea
  • Not Synced
    because software, at that time,
    was given away free with hardware.
  • Not Synced
    No body would buy software,
  • Not Synced
    certainly not from a woman.
  • Not Synced
    Although women were then coming out
    of the universities
  • Not Synced
    with decent degrees,
  • Not Synced
    there was a glass ceiling to our progress.
  • Not Synced
    And I'd hit that glass ceiling too often.
  • Not Synced
    And I want opportunities for women.
  • Not Synced
    I recruited professionally-qualified women
    who'd left the industry
  • Not Synced
    on marrriage or when their first child was expected
  • Not Synced
    and structured them into a home-working
    organization.
  • Not Synced
    We pioneered the concept of women
    getting back into the workforce
  • Not Synced
    after a career break.
  • Not Synced
    We pioneered all sorts
    of flexible work methods:
  • Not Synced
    job shares, profit sharing, and eventually,
    co-ownership
  • Not Synced
    when I took a quarter of the company
    into the hands of the staff
  • Not Synced
    at no cost to anyone but me.
  • Not Synced
    For years, I was the "first-woman" this,
    or the "only-woman" that.
  • Not Synced
    And in those days, I couldn't work
    on the stock exchange,
  • Not Synced
    I couldn't drive a bus or fly an airplane.
  • Not Synced
    Indeed I couldn't open a bank account
    without my husband's permission.
  • Not Synced
    My generation of women fought
    the battles for the right to work
  • Not Synced
    and the right for equal pay.
  • Not Synced
    Nobody really expected much
    from people at work
  • Not Synced
    or people in society because
    all the expectations then
  • Not Synced
    were about home and family responsibilities.
  • Not Synced
    And I couldn't really face that,
  • Not Synced
    so I started to challenge the conventions
    of the time,
  • Not Synced
    even to the extent of changing my name
    from Stephanie to Steve
  • Not Synced
    in my business development letters,
  • Not Synced
    so as to get through the door
    before anyone realized
  • Not Synced
    that he was a she.
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter).
  • Not Synced
    My company called Freelance Programmers,
    and that's precisely what it was,
  • Not Synced
    couldn't have started smaller:
    on the dining room table
  • Not Synced
    and fiancee by the equivalent of
    one hundred dollars in today's terms,
  • Not Synced
    and financed by my labor and by borrowing
    against the house.
  • Not Synced
    My interests were scientific,
    the market was commercial.
  • Not Synced
    Things such as payroll, which I found
    rather boring.
  • Not Synced
    So I had to compromise with operational
    research work,
  • Not Synced
    which had the intellectual challenge that
    interested me and the commercial
  • Not Synced
    value that was valued by the clients.
  • Not Synced
    Things like scheduling freight trains,
  • Not Synced
    time-tabling buses, stock control,
    lots and lots of stock control.
  • Not Synced
    And eventually, the work came in.
  • Not Synced
    We disguised the domestic
    and part-time nature
  • Not Synced
    of the staff by offering fixed prices,
    one of the very first to do so.
  • Not Synced
    And who would have guessed that
    the programming of the
  • Not Synced
    black box flight recorder of Super-Sonic Concord
    would have been done by
  • Not Synced
    a bunch of women working
    in their own homes.
  • Not Synced
    (Applause)
  • Not Synced
    All we used was a simple "trust the staff" approach,
  • Not Synced
    and a simple telephone.
  • Not Synced
    We even used to ask job applicants,
    "Do you have access to a telephone?"
  • Not Synced
    An early project was to develop
    software standards
  • Not Synced
    on management control protocols.
  • Not Synced
    And software was and still is a maddeningly
    hard to control activity,
  • Not Synced
    so that was enormously valuable.
  • Not Synced
    We used the standards ourselves,
  • Not Synced
    we were even paid to update them
    over the years,
  • Not Synced
    Eventually, they were adopted by NATO.
  • Not Synced
    Our programmers, remember, only women,
  • Not Synced
    included gay and transgender,
  • Not Synced
    worked with pencil and paper
    to develop flow-charts
  • Not Synced
    defining tasks to be done.
  • Not Synced
    And they then wrote code, usually machine code,
  • Not Synced
    sometimes binary code,
  • Not Synced
    which was then sent, by mail,
    to a data center
  • Not Synced
    to be punched into paper-tape, or card
  • Not Synced
    and then re-punched, in order to verify it.
  • Not Synced
    All this, before it ever got near a computer.
  • Not Synced
    That was programming in the early 1960s.
  • Not Synced
    In 1975, 13 years from startup,
  • Not Synced
    equal opprtunity legislation came in
    in Britain
  • Not Synced
    and that made it illegal to have
    our pro-female policies.
