About the Speech:
Following the recent Third Plenary of the 18th Party Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC), the Chinese leadership has now set a goal of doubling its 2010 GDP per capita by the year 2030. If such an economic goal is achieved, coupled with China's growing weight in security, diplomatic and trade affairs, we may see a shifting of global leadership from the United States to China. Mr. Fingleton examined what such a shift might mean for the United States, and for the West in general.
About the Speaker:
A former editor for Forbes and the Financial Times, Eamonn Fingleton monitored East Asian finance and economics from a base in Tokyo for over 20 years. In his 2008 book In the Jaws of the Dragon: America's Fate in the Coming Era of Chinese Hegemony he challenged the conventional view that China is converging to Western economic and political norms. His works have been translated into French, Russian, Korean, Japanese, and Chinese.
