    One is that people will tend

    to lose bone and muscle mass.

    We know this.

    If you have to put a cast on your leg

    and you take the cast off after a few weeks,

    you'll see that your muscles have shrunk in size.

    And if you measured the bone strength,
  • Not Synced
    you'd also see that might have gone down a little bit, too.
  • Not Synced
    And so, it's very interesting that our body has that ability
  • Not Synced
    to adapt to the loads that are put on it,
  • Not Synced
    so that bones and muscles aren't static,
  • Not Synced
    they're always changing.
  • Not Synced
    While we think of bone as being this solid thing
  • Not Synced
    that doesn't change very much,
  • Not Synced
    it changes too.
  • Not Synced
    And it turns out that in weightlessness,
  • Not Synced
    you lose bone.
  • Not Synced
    And then you also cause the muscles
  • Not Synced
    that work against gravity,
  • Not Synced
    what are called the postural muscles,
  • Not Synced
    they'll start to shrink and lose strength.
  • Not Synced
    There are other things in the cardiovascular system,
  • Not Synced
    the heart and blood vessels.
  • Not Synced
    And if you think about it,
  • Not Synced
    standing up in gravity
  • Not Synced
    means you have to work against gravity
  • Not Synced
    in order to keep blood pumping to your head.
  • Not Synced
    So, if you couldn't keep blood pumping in your head,
  • Not Synced
    you'd pass out every time you stood up
  • Not Synced
    because when you're lying down,
  • Not Synced
    you don't have to push against gravity.
  • Not Synced
    But when you stand up,
  • Not Synced
    you got to work against gravity
  • Not Synced
    to keep blood flowing to your head.
  • Not Synced
    And your heart and blood vessels
  • Not Synced
    have a really nicely worked-out system
  • Not Synced
    to make that happen every time.
  • Not Synced
    But that system can also change in weightlessness.
  • Not Synced
    And then the other area that changes
  • Not Synced
    is the system that has to do with balance.
  • Not Synced
    Again, maintaining your balance
  • Not Synced
    is something that you're doing against gravity, right?
  • Not Synced
    If you didn't have gravity present,
  • Not Synced
    you wouldn't have to worry about falling.
  • Not Synced
    But you obviously do have to worry about falling
  • Not Synced
    and we have a very highly developed sense of balance
  • Not Synced
    to keep us upright
  • Not Synced
    and to keep us from falling.
  • Not Synced
    And when you see what skaters do,
  • Not Synced
    you realize just how exquisite a system it is.
  • Not Synced
    But when you go into weightlessness,
  • Not Synced
    your balance system changes.
  • Not Synced
    You don't really notice it
  • Not Synced
    while you are in weightlessness,
  • Not Synced
    but when you come back,
  • Not Synced
    you do notice it,
  • Not Synced
    that your balance has changed
  • Not Synced
    and you have a little bit of trouble
  • Not Synced
    maintaining your balance.
  • Not Synced
    And what it shows is that while you're in space,
  • Not Synced
    your brain is trying to allow you
  • Not Synced
    to function in weightlessness.
  • Not Synced
    So it re-adapts you to be weightless,
  • Not Synced
    which you don't notice until you come back
  • Not Synced
    and find out that you are now back on Earth
  • Not Synced
    with a balance system that's been adapted to space.
  • Not Synced
    You know, all life developed here on Earth
  • Not Synced
    with gravity being present,
  • Not Synced
    so life evolved under the influence of gravity,
  • Not Synced
    and then we grow up with gravity being present,
  • Not Synced
    so we learn how to walk
  • Not Synced
    and catch a ball
  • Not Synced
    and ice skate
  • Not Synced
    or whatever,
  • Not Synced
    all with gravity being present.
  • Not Synced
    And what if you were to grow up without gravity?
  • Not Synced
    What about the systems that depend on gravity,
  • Not Synced
    like your muscles
  • Not Synced
    or your balance system
