WEBVTT 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Some of the issues that are important 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 if you want to have people in space 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 for long periods of time. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 One is that people will tend 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 to lose bone and muscle mass. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 We know this. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 If you have to put a cast on your leg 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and you take the cast off after a few weeks, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 you'll see that your muscles have shrunk in size. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And if you measured the bone strength, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 you'd also see that might have gone down a little bit, too. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And so, it's very interesting that our body has that ability 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 to adapt to the loads that are put on it, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 so that bones and muscles aren't static, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 they're always changing. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 While we think of bone as being this solid thing 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 that doesn't change very much, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 it changes too. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And it turns out that in weightlessness, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 you lose bone. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And then you also cause the muscles 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 that work against gravity, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 what are called the postural muscles, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 they'll start to shrink and lose strength. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 There are other things in the cardiovascular system, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 the heart and blood vessels. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And if you think about it, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 standing up in gravity 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 means you have to work against gravity 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 in order to keep blood pumping to your head. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So, if you couldn't keep blood pumping in your head, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 you'd pass out every time you stood up 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 because when you're lying down, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 you don't have to push against gravity. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 But when you stand up, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 you got to work against gravity 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 to keep blood flowing to your head. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And your heart and blood vessels 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 have a really nicely worked-out system 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 to make that happen every time. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 But that system can also change in weightlessness. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And then the other area that changes 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 is the system that has to do with balance. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Again, maintaining your balance 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 is something that you're doing against gravity, right? 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 If you didn't have gravity present, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 you wouldn't have to worry about falling. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 But you obviously do have to worry about falling 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and we have a very highly developed sense of balance 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 to keep us upright 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and to keep us from falling. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And when you see what skaters do, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 you realize just how exquisite a system it is. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 But when you go into weightlessness, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 your balance system changes. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 You don't really notice it 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 while you are in weightlessness, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 but when you come back, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 you do notice it, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 that your balance has changed 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and you have a little bit of trouble 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 maintaining your balance. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And what it shows is that while you're in space, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 your brain is trying to allow you 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 to function in weightlessness. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So it re-adapts you to be weightless, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 which you don't notice until you come back 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and find out that you are now back on Earth 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 with a balance system that's been adapted to space. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 You know, all life developed here on Earth 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 with gravity being present, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 so life evolved under the influence of gravity, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and then we grow up with gravity being present, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 so we learn how to walk 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and catch a ball 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and ice skate 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 or whatever, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 all with gravity being present. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And what if you were to grow up without gravity? 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 What about the systems that depend on gravity, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 like your muscles 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 or your balance system
