Great Apps for Autism: "Scene Speak" Review

  • 0:02 - 0:05
Hi, I'm Jason from Autism Interventions
  • 0:05 - 0:08
and today I want to show you a really cool iPad app.
  • 0:08 - 0:11
that we are using with our son...
  • 0:11 - 0:13
our 5 year old who has autism.
  • 0:13 - 0:15
and we have seen some really cool stuff happen with this.
  • 0:15 - 0:18
One of the things about autistic kids that is common
  • 0:18 - 0:20
is they learn really well from digital media.
  • 0:20 - 0:25
So, our son will go around copying lines from Toy Story or Despicable Me
  • 0:25 - 0:28
or something sometimes far more annoying than that.
  • 0:28 - 0:31
So he is learning to say words but they are out of context
  • 0:31 - 0:34
and they are not the right ones we want him to learn.
  • 0:34 - 0:38
So, we got this great app on the iPad 2.
  • 0:38 - 0:41
It's called Scenes Speak. So we want to review Scenes Speak today.
  • 0:41 - 0:47
This is an app we got from the app store...$14.99 I think.
  • 0:47 - 0:50
Here's the cool thing about Scene Speak.
  • 0:50 - 0:54
You can make your own visual and audio books...so to speak.
  • 0:54 - 1:01
very easily. It comes with a library of pictures and things. Like you've got one of your bedroom here
  • 1:01 - 1:05
and you choose an area...for example we can click on computer
  • 1:05 - 1:07
and actually say the word "computer."
  • 1:07 - 1:11
so then when my son is cycling through he can hit it and hear that.
  • 1:11 - 1:15
Let me show you one that we use all the time.
  • 1:15 - 1:20
And, this is where it gets great when we look at family or things we want him to learn.
  • 1:20 - 1:24
So, here is a picture of our family right here.
  • 1:24 - 1:27
So, he can look at this, he can flip through the pages, as they call them...
  • 1:27 - 1:30
and he sees all of his family members.
  • 1:30 - 1:32
So, then he can click on himself and this is what he'd hear.
  • 1:32 - 1:36
[app speaks] This is me. I like to run on my Dad's back.
  • 1:36 - 1:40
So, he's learning, hopefully, things in context, or even more appropriately
  • 1:40 - 1:44
[app speaks] My name is Jack. I am 5 years old.
  • 1:44 - 1:48
This is really, really helpful because, if he's going to learn things from media anyway
  • 1:48 - 1:52
he might as well learn to say things that are true...
  • 1:52 - 1:58
rather than things like, you know, "my name is Lightning McQueen" or something.
  • 1:58 - 2:00
So, here's an example. It's very simple.
  • 2:00 - 2:04
You can have all sorts of things push all over the screen.
  • 2:04 - 2:06
And, it's very accurate. So he can push on "mama"
  • 2:06 - 2:08
    [app speaks] Sam
  • 2:08 - 2:10
Oops, he clicked on his brother's head here.
  • 2:10 - 2:12
And, he hear's mama [app] "mommy'
  • 2:12 - 2:16
    Or me [app] "daddy"
  • 2:16 - 2:19
    Or, himself [app] "Jack"
  • 2:19 - 2:22
So, he plays with this all the time. The cool thing is
  • 2:22 - 2:26
You know, is he still learning my rote? Yeah he is but,
  • 2:26 - 2:31
it's cool because, not only is it in context, and he's saying the right things but
  • 2:31 - 2:33
he's actually learning them in the real world.
  • 2:33 - 2:37
So, he ran up to his mom the other day and said "this is my mommy."
  • 2:37 - 2:41
Or, we were all sitting in the living room and he came in and said "this is my family."
  • 2:41 - 2:46
So, it's pretty exciting. He's starting to learn basic vocabulary that we take for granted
  • 2:46 - 2:49
unless you're a parent of an autistic child then you know how much you long
  • 2:49 - 2:52
for that just simple little breakthrough...him saying your name.
  • 2:52 - 2:59
[app] I love to smile. I love to smile.
  • 2:59 - 3:01
[Dad] Say I love to smile.
  • 3:01 - 3:04
    I love to smile.
  • 3:04 - 3:07
So, we highly recommend this app. Again, it's called Scene Speak.
  • 3:07 - 3:08
    Be sure to check back.
  • 3:08 - 3:12
We are going to be reviewing all kinds of iPad apps in the future.
  • 3:12 - 3:14
    Thanks!
