WEBVTT 00:00:02.219 --> 00:00:04.885 Hi, I'm Jason from Autism Interventions 00:00:04.885 --> 00:00:08.362 and today I want to show you a really cool iPad app. 00:00:08.362 --> 00:00:10.798 that we are using with our son... 00:00:10.798 --> 00:00:12.674 our 5 year old who has autism. 00:00:12.674 --> 00:00:15.222 and we have seen some really cool stuff happen with this. 00:00:15.222 --> 00:00:17.925 One of the things about autistic kids that is common 00:00:17.925 --> 00:00:20.051 is they learn really well from digital media. 00:00:20.051 --> 00:00:24.846 So, our son will go around copying lines from Toy Story or Despicable Me 00:00:24.846 --> 00:00:28.160 or something sometimes far more annoying than that. 00:00:28.160 --> 00:00:31.303 So he is learning to say words but they are out of context 00:00:31.303 --> 00:00:34.076 and they are not the right ones we want him to learn. 00:00:34.076 --> 00:00:37.653 So, we got this great app on the iPad 2. 00:00:37.653 --> 00:00:41.364 It's called Scenes Speak. So we want to review Scenes Speak today. 00:00:41.364 --> 00:00:46.651 This is an app we got from the app store...$14.99 I think. 00:00:46.651 --> 00:00:49.723 Here's the cool thing about Scene Speak. 00:00:49.723 --> 00:00:53.640 You can make your own visual and audio books...so to speak. 00:00:53.640 --> 00:01:01.219 very easily. It comes with a library of pictures and things. Like you've got one of your bedroom here 00:01:01.219 --> 00:01:05.346 and you choose an area...for example we can click on computer 00:01:05.346 --> 00:01:07.455 and actually say the word "computer." 00:01:07.455 --> 00:01:11.291 so then when my son is cycling through he can hit it and hear that. 00:01:11.291 --> 00:01:14.637 Let me show you one that we use all the time. 00:01:14.637 --> 00:01:19.655 And, this is where it gets great when we look at family or things we want him to learn. 00:01:19.655 --> 00:01:24.031 So, here is a picture of our family right here. 00:01:24.031 --> 00:01:27.282 So, he can look at this, he can flip through the pages, as they call them... 00:01:27.282 --> 00:01:29.951 and he sees all of his family members. 00:01:29.951 --> 00:01:31.989 So, then he can click on himself and this is what he'd hear. 00:01:31.989 --> 00:01:36.436 [app speaks] This is me. I like to run on my Dad's back. 00:01:36.436 --> 00:01:40.149 So, he's learning, hopefully, things in context, or even more appropriately 00:01:40.149 --> 00:01:44.425 [app speaks] My name is Jack. I am 5 years old. 00:01:44.425 --> 00:01:48.478 This is really, really helpful because, if he's going to learn things from media anyway 00:01:48.478 --> 00:01:52.058 he might as well learn to say things that are true... 00:01:52.058 --> 00:01:57.610 rather than things like, you know, "my name is Lightning McQueen" or something. 00:01:57.610 --> 00:02:00.012 So, here's an example. It's very simple. 00:02:00.012 --> 00:02:04.104 You can have all sorts of things push all over the screen. 00:02:04.104 --> 00:02:06.367 And, it's very accurate. So he can push on "mama" 00:02:06.367 --> 00:02:08.238 [app speaks] Sam 00:02:08.238 --> 00:02:10.310 Oops, he clicked on his brother's head here. 00:02:10.310 --> 00:02:12.321 And, he hear's mama [app] "mommy' 00:02:12.321 --> 00:02:15.928 Or me [app] "daddy" 00:02:15.928 --> 00:02:19.310 Or, himself [app] "Jack" 00:02:19.310 --> 00:02:22.084 So, he plays with this all the time. The cool thing is 00:02:22.084 --> 00:02:25.894 You know, is he still learning my rote? Yeah he is but, 00:02:25.894 --> 00:02:30.615 it's cool because, not only is it in context, and he's saying the right things but 00:02:30.615 --> 00:02:32.643 he's actually learning them in the real world. 00:02:32.643 --> 00:02:37.436 So, he ran up to his mom the other day and said "this is my mommy." 00:02:37.436 --> 00:02:40.780 Or, we were all sitting in the living room and he came in and said "this is my family." 00:02:40.780 --> 00:02:45.654 So, it's pretty exciting. He's starting to learn basic vocabulary that we take for granted 00:02:45.654 --> 00:02:48.873 unless you're a parent of an autistic child then you know how much you long 00:02:48.873 --> 00:02:52.147 for that just simple little breakthrough...him saying your name. 00:02:52.147 --> 00:02:58.976 [app] I love to smile. I love to smile. 00:02:58.976 --> 00:03:01.036 [Dad] Say I love to smile. 00:03:01.036 --> 00:03:03.843 I love to smile. 00:03:03.843 --> 00:03:06.651 So, we highly recommend this app. Again, it's called Scene Speak. 00:03:06.651 --> 00:03:08.477 Be sure to check back. 00:03:08.477 --> 00:03:11.772 We are going to be reviewing all kinds of iPad apps in the future. 00:03:11.772 --> 00:03:14.010 Thanks!
