Margot Gerritsen on "Linear Algebra - the incredible beauty of math"

  • Not Synced
It's actually delightful to be here
  • Not Synced
So thanks to for inviting me.
  • Not Synced
I am a mathematician. And you may not
  • Not Synced
    associate mathematicians with people that
  • Not Synced
    love art.
  • Not Synced
But I happen to think that mathematics is
  • Not Synced
the most beautiful thing on earth.
  • Not Synced
And I want to convince you today that
  • Not Synced
    that's the case.
  • Not Synced
Now we're going to use a few tricks.
  • Not Synced
So we're not just going to stare at
  • Not Synced
equations. I get really a wonderful
  • Not Synced
feeling inside of me when I stare at a
  • Not Synced
system of equations. But I'm not expecting
  • Not Synced
you to have that same sort of feeling.
  • Not Synced
So what I'd like to do is provide some
  • Not Synced
color and some illustrations of the
  • Not Synced
    systems of equations.
  • Not Synced
Now, matrices, what are matrices, you know?
  • Not Synced
Why, as a mathematician, do I love them so
  • Not Synced
much? Well, let me just give you a little
  • Not Synced
bit of a feel of the sort of problems I
  • Not Synced
work on. I'm a computational mathematician.
  • Not Synced
And I really like things to do with fluid
  • Not Synced
flow. So you give me a fluid, I like to
  • Not Synced
simulate it. So I've done work on
  • Not Synced
    coastal ocean flows
