This is what LGBT life is like around the world

  • Not Synced
Jenni Change: When I told my parents
    I was gay,
  • Not Synced
the first thing they said to me was,
  • Not Synced
"We're bring you back to Taiwan."
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
In their minds, my sexual orientation
    was America's fault.
  • Not Synced
    The West had corrupted me
    with divergent ideas,
  • Not Synced
    and if only my parents
    had not left Taiwan,
  • Not Synced
    this would not have happened
    to their only daughter.
  • Not Synced
    In truth, I wondered
    if they were right.
  • Not Synced
Of course, there are gay people
    in Asia,
  • Not Synced
just as there are gay people
in every part of the world.
  • Not Synced
But is the idea of living
    an "out" life,
  • Not Synced
in the "I'm gay, this is my spouse,
and we're proud of our lives together"
  • Not Synced
kind of way just a Western idea?
  • Not Synced
If I had grown up in Taiwan,
or any place outside of the West,
  • Not Synced
    would I have found models
    of happy, thriving, LGBT people?
  • Not Synced
Liza Dazols: I had similar notions.
  • Not Synced
As an HIV social worker in San Francisco,
  • Not Synced
    I met many gay immigrants.
  • Not Synced
They told me their stories of persecution
    in their home countries,
  • Not Synced
    just for being gay,
  • Not Synced
and the reasons why they escaped the US.
  • Not Synced
I saw how this had beaten them down.
  • Not Synced
After 10 years of doing this kind of work,
  • Not Synced
I needed better stories for myself.
  • Not Synced
I knew the world was far from perfect,
  • Not Synced
but surely not every gay story was tragic.
  • Not Synced
JG: So as a couple, we both had a need
    to find stories of hope.
  • Not Synced
So we set off on a mission
    to travel the world
  • Not Synced
and look for the people we
finally termed as "The Super Gays".
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
These would be the LGBT invidiuals
  • Not Synced
    who are doing something
    extraordinary in the world.
  • Not Synced
    They would be courageous, resilient,
  • Not Synced
and most of all, proud of who they were.
  • Not Synced
They would be the kind of person
    that I aspired to be.
  • Not Synced
Our plan was to share their stories
    to the world through film.
  • Not Synced
    LD: There's just one problem,
  • Not Synced
    we had zero reporting
    and zero filmmaking experience.
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
    We didn't even know
where to find the Super Gays,
  • Not Synced
so we just had to trust that we'd
figure it all out along the way.
  • Not Synced
    So we picked 15 countries
in Asia, Africa and South America,
  • Not Synced
    countries outside the West
    that varied in LGBT rights.
  • Not Synced
    We ordered a camcorder,
  • Not Synced
    ordered a book on
    how to make a documentary,
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
you can learn a lot these days,
  • Not Synced
    and set off on an
    around-the-world trip.
  • Not Synced
JC: One of the first countries
that we traveled to was Nepal.
  • Not Synced
    Despite widespread poverty,
    a decade-long civil war,
  • Not Synced
    and more recently,
  • Not Synced
    a devastating earthquake,
  • Not Synced
    Nepal has made significant strides
    in the fight for equality.
  • Not Synced
    One of the key figures
in the movement is Bhumika Shrestha.
  • Not Synced
    A beautiful, vibrant transgendered woman,
  • Not Synced
    Bhumika has had to overcome
    being expelled from school
  • Not Synced
    and getting incarcerated
    because of her gender presentation.
  • Not Synced
But, in 2007, Bhumika and Nepal's
    LGBT rights organization
  • Not Synced
    successfully petitioned
    the Nepali Supreme Court
  • Not Synced
    against LGBT discrimination.
  • Not Synced
    Here's Bhumika:
  • Not Synced
    BS: What I'm most proud,
  • Not Synced
    I'm a transgendered person.
  • Not Synced
I'm so proud of my life.
  • Not Synced
    On December 21, 2007,
  • Not Synced
the Supreme Court gave the decision
  • Not Synced
    for the Nepal government
  • Not Synced
    to give transgender identity cards
  • Not Synced
    and sam sex marriage.
  • Not Synced
    LD: I could appreciate
Bhumika's confidence on a daily basis.
  • Not Synced
    Something as simple
    as using a public restroom
  • Not Synced
    can be huge challenge
    when you don't fit in
  • Not Synced
    to people's strict gender expectations.
  • Not Synced
    Traveling around Asia,
  • Not Synced
I tended to freak out women
    in public restrooms.
  • Not Synced
    They weren't used to seeing
    someone like me.
  • Not Synced
I had to come up with a strategy
  • Not Synced
so that I could just pee in peace.
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
