A cyber-magic card trick like no other
-
0:00 - 0:03Good morning. So magic is an excellent way
-
0:03 - 0:05for staying ahead of the reality curve,
-
0:05 - 0:08to make possible today
-
0:08 - 0:10what science will make a reality tomorrow.
-
0:10 - 0:13As a cyber-magician, I combine elements of illusion
-
0:13 - 0:18and science to give us a feel of how future technologies
-
0:18 - 0:20might be experienced.
-
0:20 - 0:24You've probably all heard of Google's Project Glass.
-
0:24 - 0:26It's new technology. You look through them
-
0:26 - 0:29and the world you see is augmented with data:
-
0:29 - 0:32names of places, monuments, buildings,
-
0:32 - 0:36maybe one day even the names of the strangers that pass you on the street.
-
0:36 - 0:40So these are my illusion glasses.
-
0:40 - 0:44They're a little bigger. They're a prototype.
-
0:44 - 0:47And when you look through them, you get a glimpse
-
0:47 - 0:51into the mind of the cyber-illusionist.
-
0:51 - 0:53Let me show you what I mean.
-
0:53 - 0:58All we need is a playing card. Any card will do.
-
0:58 - 1:02Like this. And let me mark it so we can recognize it
-
1:02 - 1:07when we see it again.
-
1:07 - 1:11All right. Very significant mark.
-
1:11 - 1:13And let's put it back into the deck,
-
1:13 - 1:18somewhere in the middle, and let's get started.
-
1:18 - 1:19(Music)
-
1:19 - 1:22Voice: System ready. Acquiring image.
-
1:22 - 1:24Marco Tempest: For those of you who don't play cards,
-
1:24 - 1:28a deck of cards is made up of four different suits:
-
1:28 - 1:31hearts, clubs,
-
1:31 - 1:34diamonds and spades.
-
1:34 - 1:37The cards are amongst the oldest of symbols,
-
1:37 - 1:42and have been interpreted in many different ways.
-
1:42 - 1:46Now, some say that the four suits
-
1:46 - 1:50represent the four seasons.
-
1:50 - 1:53There's spring, summer,
-
1:53 - 1:56autumn and â
-
1:56 - 1:59Voice: My favorite season is winter.
MT: Well yeah, mine too. -
1:59 - 2:02Winter is like magic. It's a time of change,
-
2:02 - 2:05when warmth turns to cold, water turns to snow,
-
2:05 - 2:09and then it all disappears.
-
2:09 - 2:15There are 13 cards in each suit. (Music)
-
2:15 - 2:19Voice: Each card represents a phase of the 13 lunar cycles.
-
2:19 - 2:22MT: So over here is low tide,
-
2:22 - 2:24and over here is high tide,
-
2:24 - 2:27and in the middle is the moon.
-
2:27 - 2:31Voice: The moon is one of the most potent symbols of magic.
-
2:31 - 2:35MT: There are two colors in a deck of cards.
-
2:35 - 2:38There is the color red
-
2:38 - 2:43and the color black,
-
2:43 - 2:46representing the constant change
-
2:46 - 2:49from day to night.
-
2:49 - 2:51Voice: Marco, I did not know you could do that. (Laughter)
-
2:51 - 2:55MT: And is it a coincidence that there are 52 cards
-
2:55 - 3:00in a deck of cards, just as there are 52 weeks in a year?
-
3:00 - 3:04(Music)
-
3:04 - 3:06Voice: If you total all the spots on a deck of cards,
-
3:06 - 3:09the result is 365.
-
3:09 - 3:12MT: Oh, 365, the number of days in a year,
-
3:12 - 3:15the number of days between
-
3:15 - 3:17each birthday.
-
3:17 - 3:21Make a wish. (Blowing noise)
-
3:21 - 3:23Voice: Don't tell, or it won't come true.
-
3:23 - 3:26MT: Well, as a matter of fact, it was on my sixth birthday
-
3:26 - 3:29that I received my first deck of cards,
-
3:29 - 3:34and ever since that day, I have traveled around the world
-
3:34 - 3:37performing magic for boys and girls,
-
3:37 - 3:40men and women, husbands and wives,
-
3:40 - 3:46even kings and queens. (Applause)
-
3:46 - 3:50Voice: And who are these?
MT: Ah, mischief-makers. Watch. -
3:50 - 3:52Wake up.
-
3:52 - 3:54Joker: Whoa.
MT: Are you ready for your party piece? -
3:54 - 3:56Joker: Ready!
MT: Let me see what you've got. -
3:56 - 3:59Joker: Presenting my pogo stick.
MT: Ah. Watch out. -
3:59 - 4:03Joker: Whoa, whoa, whoa, oh! (Music)
-
4:03 - 4:08MT: But today, I am performing for a different kind of audience.
-
4:08 - 4:11I'm performing for you.
-
4:11 - 4:14Voice: Signed card detected.
MT: Well, sometimes people ask me -
4:14 - 4:19how do you become a magician? Is it a 9-to-5 job?
-
4:19 - 4:22Of course not! You've got to practice 24/7.
-
4:22 - 4:26I don't literally mean 24 hours, seven days a week.
-
4:26 - 4:3024/7 is a little bit of an exaggeration,
-
4:30 - 4:33but it does take practice. Now, some people will say,
-
4:33 - 4:38well, magic, that must be the work of some evil
-
4:38 - 4:41supernatural force. (Laughter) (Applause)
-
4:41 - 4:44(Music)
-
4:44 - 4:49Whoa.
-
4:49 - 4:53Well, to this, I just say, no no.
-
4:53 - 4:55Actually, in German, it's nein nein. (Laughter)
-
4:55 - 4:59Magic isn't that intense. I have to warn you, though,
-
4:59 - 5:03if you ever play with someone who deals cards like this,
-
5:03 - 5:06don't play for money.
-
5:06 - 5:09(Music)
-
5:09 - 5:13Voice: Why not? That's a very good hand.
-
5:13 - 5:16The odds of getting it are 4,165 to one.
-
5:16 - 5:21MT: Yeah, but I guess my hand is better. We beat the odds.
-
5:21 - 5:26Voice: I think you got your birthday wish.
MT: And that actually leaves me with the last, -
5:26 - 5:29and most important card of all:
-
5:29 - 5:32the one with this very significant mark on it.
-
5:32 - 5:35And unlike anything else we've just seen,
-
5:35 - 5:39virtual or not â
Voice: Signed card detected. -
5:39 - 5:48Digital MT: This is without a question the real thing.
-
5:48 - 5:57MT: Bye bye. (Music)
-
5:57 - 6:00Thank you. (Applause)
-
6:00 - 6:03(Applause)
-
6:03 - 6:10Thank you very much. (Applause)
-
6:10 - 6:14(Applause)
- Title:
- A cyber-magic card trick like no other
- Speaker:
- Marco Tempest
- Description:
-
The suits, numbers and colors in a deck of cards correspond to the seasons, moon cycles and calendar. Marco Tempest straps on augmented reality goggles and does a card trick like you’ve never seen before, weaving a lyrical tale as he deals. (This version fixes a glitch in the original performance, but is otherwise exactly as seen live by the TEDGlobal audience, including the dazzling augmented reality effects.)
