A cyber-magic card trick like no other

  • 0:00 - 0:03
Good morning. So magic is an excellent way
  • 0:03 - 0:05
for staying ahead of the reality curve,
  • 0:05 - 0:08
    to make possible today
  • 0:08 - 0:10
what science will make a reality tomorrow.
  • 0:10 - 0:13
As a cyber-magician, I combine elements of illusion
  • 0:13 - 0:18
and science to give us a feel of how future technologies
  • 0:18 - 0:20
    might be experienced.
  • 0:20 - 0:24
You've probably all heard of Google's Project Glass.
  • 0:24 - 0:26
It's new technology. You look through them
  • 0:26 - 0:29
and the world you see is augmented with data:
  • 0:29 - 0:32
    names of places, monuments, buildings,
  • 0:32 - 0:36
maybe one day even the names of the strangers that pass you on the street.
  • 0:36 - 0:40
So these are my illusion glasses.
  • 0:40 - 0:44
    They're a little bigger. They're a prototype.
  • 0:44 - 0:47
And when you look through them, you get a glimpse
  • 0:47 - 0:51
into the mind of the cyber-illusionist.
  • 0:51 - 0:53
Let me show you what I mean.
  • 0:53 - 0:58
All we need is a playing card. Any card will do.
  • 0:58 - 1:02
Like this. And let me mark it so we can recognize it
  • 1:02 - 1:07
    when we see it again.
  • 1:07 - 1:11
    All right. Very significant mark.
  • 1:11 - 1:13
And let's put it back into the deck,
  • 1:13 - 1:18
somewhere in the middle, and let's get started.
  • 1:18 - 1:19
    (Music)
  • 1:19 - 1:22
    Voice: System ready. Acquiring image.
  • 1:22 - 1:24
Marco Tempest: For those of you who don't play cards,
  • 1:24 - 1:28
a deck of cards is made up of four different suits:
  • 1:28 - 1:31
    hearts, clubs,
  • 1:31 - 1:34
    diamonds and spades.
  • 1:34 - 1:37
The cards are amongst the oldest of symbols,
  • 1:37 - 1:42
and have been interpreted in many different ways.
  • 1:42 - 1:46
Now, some say that the four suits
  • 1:46 - 1:50
    represent the four seasons.
  • 1:50 - 1:53
    There's spring, summer,
  • 1:53 - 1:56
    autumn and â
  • 1:56 - 1:59
Voice: My favorite season is winter.MT: Well yeah, mine too.
  • 1:59 - 2:02
Winter is like magic. It's a time of change,
  • 2:02 - 2:05
when warmth turns to cold, water turns to snow,
  • 2:05 - 2:09
    and then it all disappears.
  • 2:09 - 2:15
There are 13 cards in each suit. (Music)
  • 2:15 - 2:19
Voice: Each card represents a phase of the 13 lunar cycles.
  • 2:19 - 2:22
MT: So over here is low tide,
  • 2:22 - 2:24
and over here is high tide,
  • 2:24 - 2:27
and in the middle is the moon.
  • 2:27 - 2:31
Voice: The moon is one of the most potent symbols of magic.
  • 2:31 - 2:35
MT: There are two colors in a deck of cards.
  • 2:35 - 2:38
    There is the color red
  • 2:38 - 2:43
    and the color black,
  • 2:43 - 2:46
    representing the constant change
  • 2:46 - 2:49
    from day to night.
  • 2:49 - 2:51
Voice: Marco, I did not know you could do that. (Laughter)
  • 2:51 - 2:55
MT: And is it a coincidence that there are 52 cards
  • 2:55 - 3:00
in a deck of cards, just as there are 52 weeks in a year?
  • 3:00 - 3:04
    (Music)
  • 3:04 - 3:06
Voice: If you total all the spots on a deck of cards,
  • 3:06 - 3:09
    the result is 365.
  • 3:09 - 3:12
MT: Oh, 365, the number of days in a year,
  • 3:12 - 3:15
    the number of days between
  • 3:15 - 3:17
    each birthday.
  • 3:17 - 3:21
    Make a wish. (Blowing noise)
  • 3:21 - 3:23
Voice: Don't tell, or it won't come true.
  • 3:23 - 3:26
MT: Well, as a matter of fact, it was on my sixth birthday
  • 3:26 - 3:29
that I received my first deck of cards,
  • 3:29 - 3:34
and ever since that day, I have traveled around the world
  • 3:34 - 3:37
performing magic for boys and girls,
  • 3:37 - 3:40
men and women, husbands and wives,
  • 3:40 - 3:46
    even kings and queens. (Applause)
  • 3:46 - 3:50
Voice: And who are these?MT: Ah, mischief-makers. Watch.
  • 3:50 - 3:52
    Wake up.
  • 3:52 - 3:54
Joker: Whoa.MT: Are you ready for your party piece?
  • 3:54 - 3:56
Joker: Ready!MT: Let me see what you've got.
  • 3:56 - 3:59
Joker: Presenting my pogo stick.MT: Ah. Watch out.
  • 3:59 - 4:03
Joker: Whoa, whoa, whoa, oh! (Music)
  • 4:03 - 4:08
MT: But today, I am performing for a different kind of audience.
  • 4:08 - 4:11
    I'm performing for you.
  • 4:11 - 4:14
Voice: Signed card detected.MT: Well, sometimes people ask me
  • 4:14 - 4:19
how do you become a magician? Is it a 9-to-5 job?
  • 4:19 - 4:22
Of course not! You've got to practice 24/7.
  • 4:22 - 4:26
I don't literally mean 24 hours, seven days a week.
  • 4:26 - 4:30
24/7 is a little bit of an exaggeration,
  • 4:30 - 4:33
but it does take practice. Now, some people will say,
  • 4:33 - 4:38
well, magic, that must be the work of some evil
  • 4:38 - 4:41
    supernatural force. (Laughter) (Applause)
  • 4:41 - 4:44
    (Music)
  • 4:44 - 4:49
    Whoa.
  • 4:49 - 4:53
Well, to this, I just say, no no.
  • 4:53 - 4:55
Actually, in German, it's nein nein. (Laughter)
  • 4:55 - 4:59
Magic isn't that intense. I have to warn you, though,
  • 4:59 - 5:03
if you ever play with someone who deals cards like this,
  • 5:03 - 5:06
    don't play for money.
  • 5:06 - 5:09
    (Music)
  • 5:09 - 5:13
Voice: Why not? That's a very good hand.
  • 5:13 - 5:16
The odds of getting it are 4,165 to one.
  • 5:16 - 5:21
MT: Yeah, but I guess my hand is better. We beat the odds.
  • 5:21 - 5:26
Voice: I think you got your birthday wish.MT: And that actually leaves me with the last,
  • 5:26 - 5:29
and most important card of all:
  • 5:29 - 5:32
the one with this very significant mark on it.
  • 5:32 - 5:35
And unlike anything else we've just seen,
  • 5:35 - 5:39
virtual or not.Voice: Signed card detected.
  • 5:39 - 5:48
Digital MT: This is without a question the real thing.
  • 5:48 - 5:57
    MT: Bye bye. (Music)
  • 5:57 - 6:00
    Thank you. (Applause)
  • 6:00 - 6:03
    (Applause)
  • 6:03 - 6:10
    Thank you very much. (Applause)
  • 6:10 - 6:14
    (Applause)
Title:
A cyber-magic card trick like no other
Speaker:
Marco Tempest
Description:

The suits, numbers and colors in a deck of cards correspond to the seasons, moon cycles and calendar. Marco Tempest straps on augmented reality goggles and does a card trick like you’ve never seen before, weaving a lyrical tale as he deals. (This version fixes a glitch in the original performance, but is otherwise exactly as seen live by the TEDGlobal audience, including the dazzling augmented reality effects.)
