Android Accessibility Webinar

  • 0:15 - 0:18
    >> Nermin Selimic: During the Webinar
today, we will have several presenters.
  • 0:18 - 0:22
    It will be Robert Felgar,
    the CEO of RAZ Mobility.
  • 0:22 - 0:28
It will be myself, Nermin Selimic,
I'm the COO at RAZ Mobility.
  • 0:29 - 0:37
    And I am especially glad
to have Jerry Jicha, on our call,
  • 0:37 - 0:41
    who is the accessibility specialist
    at RAZ Mobility
  • 0:41 - 0:45
    and who will be covering
a significant part of the demo today,
  • 0:45 - 0:50
    in particular about Android accessibility
    for blind users.
  • 0:51 - 0:56
I would like to extend my thanks to
    two people
  • 0:56 - 0:59
who are making this call possible
    on the support side.
  • 1:00 - 1:01
    It is Gayl Hardeman,
  • 1:01 - 1:06
    who is the interpreter
and is providing the CART services,
  • 1:06 - 1:12
and it is also Emil, one of our technical
    support specialists from RAZ Mobility,
  • 1:12 - 1:15
who is staying in the background
  • 1:15 - 1:19
and making sure that all the technology
is running as smooth as possible.
  • 1:20 - 1:25
I would like to mention, at any time,
    please feel free to interrupt,
  • 1:26 - 1:31
    either for questions – although
we will have two Q&A sessions
  • 1:31 - 1:35
throughout the Webinar – but also,
if you believe that your questions
  • 1:35 - 1:41
    are extremely relevant and important
to be asked at that moment,
  • 1:41 - 1:43
    please feel free to interrupt.
  • 1:43 - 1:48
    Or, in case there are
    major technical difficulties
  • 1:48 - 1:53
    and you are not able
    to participate in the Webinar
  • 1:53 - 1:58
so that we can address that
    as well as possible.
  • 2:00 - 2:05
    Quick introduction about RAZ Mobility.
  • 2:06 - 2:11
RAZ Mobility was founded in 2015
    to offer
  • 2:11 - 2:15
    States equipment and distribution programs
    and other government agencies,
  • 2:15 - 2:18
    as well as senior
    and assisted living providers,
  • 2:18 - 2:21
    schools, nonprofit organizations
    and for-profit companies,
  • 2:21 - 2:26
as well as consumers, the very latest
    in mobile assistive technology.
  • 2:27 - 2:32
We at RAZ Mobility view ourselves
    as an agent for change
  • 2:32 - 2:35
dedicated to ensuring that its customers
  • 2:35 - 2:40
    benefit from the dramatic progress
    and evolution in mobile technology.
  • 2:40 - 2:46
And many of you were able to witness,
especially over the last five years,
  • 2:46 - 2:51
and overall, over the last ten years,
with the advent of mobile technology,
  • 2:51 - 2:57
many, many aspects of assistive technology
    have changed significantly
  • 2:57 - 3:03
and have allowed for a significant
    improvement in assistive technology
  • 3:03 - 3:09
and have added many components that
were unthinkable just several years ago.
  • 3:10 - 3:12
    And that's exactly our focus
    at RAZ Mobility.
  • 3:12 - 3:17
We are searching for unique solutions
    and cutting edge solutions.
  • 3:18 - 3:23
Sometimes it is purely the device
    which is exceptional and different.
  • 3:23 - 3:29
Many times, it is also a combination
of the device and the software,
  • 3:30 - 3:32
    or simply a third-party solution.
  • 3:33 - 3:39
We have not limited ourselves to work
    only with the specific providers
  • 3:39 - 3:46
    or hardware manufacturers but
    are rather interacting with providers
  • 3:46 - 3:49
    around the globe
    in order to accomplish this.
  • 3:50 - 3:57
    And, many of our solutions
    are provided by companies
  • 3:57 - 4:00
    from the United States,
    from Europe,
  • 4:00 - 4:02
and from other parts of the world.
  • 4:04 - 4:10
The preferred approach of RAZ Mobility
is via making these solutions available
  • 4:11 - 4:20
    as Android's operating system
    mobile devices, smartphones and tablets.
  • 4:20 - 4:25
    And we are making
    these solutions available
  • 4:25 - 4:29
    in combination
    with some third-party applications.
  • 4:32 - 4:37
    Android and smartphones and tablets
    differ a little bit
  • 4:37 - 4:41
    compared to other technology
    in the marketplace.
  • 4:41 - 4:46
    In particular,
if we are talking about iOS,
  • 4:46 - 4:51
and it is simply that there are
    two dominant operating systems,
  • 4:51 - 4:54
one being iOS, and the other one Android.
  • 4:54 - 4:59
    iOS being purely available
    on Apple devices
  • 4:59 - 5:04
and on the other hand, we have Android
that is an open-source operating system,
  • 5:04 - 5:09
    and it is available to
    any hardware manufacturers
  • 5:09 - 5:13
who are interested in using Android
    as the operating system.
  • 5:13 - 5:17
    Hence, you know,
all of you have for sure noticed
  • 5:17 - 5:21
    that devices using
    the Android operating systems
  • 5:21 - 5:28
    are available from manufacturers
    such as LG, Samsung, Motorola,
  • 5:28 - 5:30
and so on, and so on.
  • 5:32 - 5:39
    So at this time,
Robert joins the Webinar as well,
  • 5:39 - 5:42
and I am here on video,
so I will ask Robert to
  • 5:42 - 5:46
    -- it will be easier
if you can join us on this side.
  • 5:46 - 5:49
We will just need to ask Robert
    to grab a chair.
  • 5:58 - 6:00
Here you are, we'll be sharing this
  • 6:00 - 6:03
I hope that the video experience
    will be optimal.
  • 6:12 - 6:15
So moving to the next section,
  • 6:15 - 6:21
and that is actually about Android
    smartphones and tablets,
  • 6:23 - 6:28
so what is the difference between
the Android operating system and iOS?
  • 6:28 - 6:33
    The Android operating system
    has developed over the years
  • 6:33 - 6:39
as the most popular operating system
    for all mobile devices,
  • 6:39 - 6:42
    including tablets and smartphones;
  • 6:43 - 6:46
    in particular,
if you are talking about tablets,
  • 6:46 - 6:51
    it has been the best-selling
operating system for tablets since 2013.
  • 6:51 - 6:57
And for smartphones, it is also dominant
    by any metrics.
  • 6:57 - 7:04
    So to illustrate several comparisons
    and several data points,
  • 7:05 - 7:08
if you are looking in particular
    in the United States
  • 7:08 - 7:15
and if you are looking at market share
    as of early 2016,
  • 7:16 - 7:24
nearly 60% of sold devices in early 2016
    were devices using
  • 7:24 - 7:26
    the Android operating system.
  • 7:27 - 7:33
Close to 40% were iOS, so Apple devices.
  • 7:33 - 7:38
And the very, very minimum market share
    of other operating systems
  • 7:38 - 7:42
    that are still out there,
    such as Blackberry and Windows.
  • 7:43 - 7:45
So there is a clear trend over the time
  • 7:45 - 7:50
    that more and more consumers
    are selecting Android devices,
  • 7:51 - 7:55
and also if you are looking
    into the overall
  • 7:55 - 7:58
    -- (Noise interference) –
    installed base
  • 8:00 - 8:05
I think someone is -- someone didn't mute
his or her phone, so if you can please --
  • 8:09 - 8:10
    and if you are looking
  • 8:10 - 8:15
    into the overall base
    of installed devices
  • 8:15 - 8:18
    or devices
that are in the hands of consumers,
  • 8:19 - 8:23
we have 52% running on Android
    in the United States
  • 8:23 - 8:30
and 43.5% are running on iOS,
    as of 2016.
  • 8:30 - 8:34
    So what are
    the Android operating system advantages?
  • 8:34 - 8:39
So Robert, if you maybe would like
to mention a couple of things about that.
  • 8:39 - 8:41
    >> Robert Felgar: Well I think that
    the major advantage
  • 8:41 - 8:44
    of the Android operating system,
first of all, is its openness.
  • 8:45 - 8:50
So there's a lot more flexibility
    for third-party applications on Android
  • 8:50 - 8:55
than compared to iOS, and you'll see that
in some of the third-party apps
  • 8:55 - 9:01
that we will demonstrate to everyone
    later in the presentation.
  • 9:02 - 9:04
You can also have custom rounds -- (check)
  • 9:04 - 9:07
    >> Nermin Selimic: I think we might
    have an issue here
  • 9:07 - 9:14
that we didn't hear you well.
    (Adjusting audio.)
  • 9:15 - 9:19
    >> Robert Felgar: The major advantage,
I think, of the Android operating system
  • 9:19 - 9:21
compared to iOS is its openness.
  • 9:22 - 9:26
So the -- what this does is, it allows
    third-party application developers
  • 9:26 - 9:31
    to develop applications
which are not available on the iOS side.
  • 9:31 - 9:32
And you will see some of that.
  • 9:33 - 9:36
We'lll see an example of that
    later on in the presentation
  • 9:36 - 9:42
when we show you, we'll see a solution
    for people with low vision.
  • 9:45 - 9:49
You'll also see that on the Android side,
    you could develop custom ROMs.
  • 9:50 - 9:54
    There are widgets,
    you've got a higher-res screen,
  • 9:54 - 10:00
and there is also multi-window support
    which is unique to Android.
  • 10:00 - 10:03
And in some devices like the Moto Z Play,
  • 10:04 - 10:09
there is much longer battery life
as compared to the iPhone, for example.
  • 10:12 - 10:15
    >> Nermin Selimic: So that being said,
    this, you know --
  • 10:15 - 10:22
we are moving really to the most important
    part of today's Webinar,
  • 10:22 - 10:27
    and these are the specifics
of the Android accessibility and --
  • 10:27 - 10:30
    resulting in the Android advantage.
  • 10:31 - 10:33
    So Robert, would you like
    to cover this part?
  • 10:35 - 10:37
    >> Jerry Jicha (check): Sure.
  • 10:38 - 10:43
    There are some significant advantages
    and some great applications
  • 10:43 - 10:47
    that are a part
    of the Android operating system.
  • 10:48 - 10:52
    These are functionalities that are
    native to the operating system.
  • 10:52 - 10:54
    They are not third-party applications.
  • 10:54 - 10:58
They are in your settings in most cases,
or on other parts of the devices.
  • 10:59 - 11:02
    An example is TalkBack,
    similar to Voiceover,
  • 11:02 - 11:06
which all of you know and
we'll be demonstrating that in detail.
  • 11:06 - 11:10
You can turn on and off captions
    in your accessibility settings.
  • 11:11 - 11:14
    There is a great way
    to increase font size.
  • 11:15 - 11:19
    >> (check) Similar to iOS, but with
some differences on the Android side,
  • 11:19 - 11:21
    you can actually,
when you increase your font size,
  • 11:21 - 11:24
    you can actually increase everything
on your screen, not just font size.
  • 11:24 - 11:28
So the size of the icons, the size
    of the notifications, et cetera.
  • 11:31 - 11:34
You've got OK Google, similar to Siri,
  • 11:35 - 11:38
    which some people find better
on the Android side than the iOS side,
  • 11:38 - 11:40
    although that is fairly personal.
  • 11:41 - 11:47
    Text to speech, magnification gestures
which you initiate through triple passing,
  • 11:47 - 11:51
Color inversion for people who have
    low vision.
  • 11:51 - 11:56
And mono audio also is for people
    who have issues
  • 11:56 - 11:59
    hearing out a particular ear,
    or color correction.
  • 12:02 - 12:08
    >> Nermin Selimic: It is important
    to mention that
  • 12:08 - 12:10
    when you are talking about
    the Android advantage,
  • 12:10 - 12:14
that obviously the fact that there are
    multiple manufacturers
  • 12:14 - 12:17
    of mobile phones and tablets,
  • 12:18 - 12:22
    it does provide to consumers
    better device options.
  • 12:22 - 12:26
    Whereas, if you are looking
on the Apple side, it is more
  • 12:27 - 12:33
-- you can get from the Android side
as well as on the iOS side,
  • 12:33 - 12:40
you can get a Cadillac solution
    a Cadillac side solution.
  • 12:40 - 12:42
    However, on the Apple side,
    it is purely --
  • 12:42 - 12:44
you can purchase only a Cadillac.
  • 12:45 - 12:48
    On the Android side,
    options are really significant.
  • 12:48 - 12:50
    There are entry-level models.
  • 12:50 - 12:56
    There are great mid-range models
    of smartphones and tablets,
  • 12:56 - 12:59
as well as top of the range.
  • 12:59 - 13:04
And all of that allows also
    for the significant competition
  • 13:04 - 13:05
    in the marketplace,
  • 13:05 - 13:10
and as consumers, we always know,
as long as there is competition,
  • 13:10 - 13:14
    typically consumers benefit from that.
  • 13:16 - 13:20
So that being said, I would like to
    just provide a brief introduction.
  • 13:20 - 13:24
    The intention today was not
    to talk about hardware.
  • 13:25 - 13:28
    However, during the demo,
  • 13:28 - 13:31
    as we are presenting
    the accessibility options,
  • 13:31 - 13:33
    the built-in accessibility features
  • 13:33 - 13:37
    as well as the third-party
    accessibility application,
  • 13:37 - 13:40
we will be using a specific Android phone.
  • 13:41 - 13:44
In this case, it will be
    the Motorola Moto Z Play.
  • 13:45 - 13:50
This is a truly great smartphone
that was introduced to the marketplace
  • 13:51 - 13:55
    in 2016, I believe;
to be exact, in October of 2016.
  • 13:55 - 13:58
    So you are looking
    into the Android space
  • 13:58 - 14:04
    which is truly almost
the top of the range device that offers
  • 14:04 - 14:13
    an exceptional high-quality display,
in 5.5 inch size, so a big display,
  • 14:13 - 14:17
as big as it can get on a smartphone.
  • 14:18 - 14:22
It is running on the newest Android
    operating system,
  • 14:22 - 14:25
    Android 7, called Nougat.
  • 14:26 - 14:31
It does include an exceptional camera,
    very strong processor
  • 14:31 - 14:35
and there are two more items
    that are very, very specific,
  • 14:35 - 14:40
and very beneficial if you are talking
    about the smartphone.
  • 14:40 - 14:44
    And one of them is
    the very powerful battery.
  • 14:44 - 14:49
So with this smartphone, even users
    who have significant usage
  • 14:49 - 14:53
throughout the day, they can use the phone
easily for more than 50 hours,
  • 14:53 - 14:58
    and that's not typical
for many smartphones as we know.
  • 14:58 - 15:01
And the other unique option is really
  • 15:00 - 15:03
    >> Nermin Selimic:if there's a means to reactivate it
  • 15:01 - 15:07
that this phone is the first
    modular phone in the world.
  • 15:07 - 15:09
Actually, you can take the back
    off very easily,
  • 15:09 - 15:11
it’s just attached by a magnet.
  • 15:11 - 15:16
    And there are some additional,
    as Motoracall them, Moto Mods,
  • 15:16 - 15:17
    which are actually gadgets
  • 15:17 - 15:24
one of them, we have seen, it is also very
    popular among hard-of-hearing users,
  • 15:24 - 15:32
it is actually a loud speaker that is
    an additional 80 decibel speaker.
  • 15:33 - 15:35
    And there are additional
    Moto Mods, such as
  • 15:36 - 15:41
you know, almost a professional camera,
    additional batteries,
  • 15:42 - 15:45
    smartphone holders for the car,
    I believe as well.
  • 15:45 - 15:48
    So it makes this phone
    really very, very attractive
  • 15:48 - 15:55
and it is significantly more affordable
than the top of the range
  • 15:55 - 15:59
    iPhone or Samsung phones
    that are out there.
  • 15:59 - 16:04
So that is the phone that we will be
    using during the demos today.
  • 16:05 - 16:10
And one more very interesting phone
    from Motorola
  • 16:10 - 16:15
that I would like just to mention briefly
    is the newest Motorola phone.
  • 16:16 - 16:22
It is the Moto G5 Plus, that was just
    released in April.
  • 16:23 - 16:31
So it is, I would say, most likely, the
best midrange phone in the marketplace.
  • 16:32 - 16:38
So it is -- it uses (check) for a fact
the same processor as the Motor Z play.
  • 16:39 - 16:46
It has many of the great features
    including a 5.2 inch display.
  • 16:46 - 16:50
    >> Robert Felgar: Two quick points
about the Moto Z Play as well.
  • 16:50 - 16:52
    First of all it's unlocked,
    which is very nice,
  • 16:52 - 16:56
this GSM also can work with either AT&T
    or T-Mobile
  • 16:56 - 16:58
or with any of their .... (check)
  • 16:58 - 17:02
Also, with respect to the speaker,
    the Moto Mod speaker,
  • 17:02 - 17:03
    it also works with TalkBack.
  • 17:03 - 17:06
So to the extent that your consumer
    is hard of hearing,
  • 17:07 - 17:09
    you can put that speaker
on the back of the device
  • 17:10 - 17:12
    and it will significantly amplify
  • 17:12 - 17:15
    the TalkBack sound
    that comes from the device.
  • 17:18 - 17:22
    >> Nermin Selimic: OK, so we are moving
    to the next section,
  • 17:22 - 17:25
and again, just as a reminder:
  • 17:25 - 17:29
I believe we do have some participants
    who are not on mute.
  • 17:29 - 17:34
So we are moving to the next part
    of our Webinar today,
  • 17:34 - 17:38
    and that is actually
    the accessibility for blind users.
  • 17:38 - 17:44
As mentioned, I am extremely glad
to have Jerry on our team,
  • 17:45 - 17:48
    who is
    one of our accessibility specialists.
  • 17:49 - 17:54
    So Jerry will be covering
this part of the Webinar today,
  • 17:54 - 18:00
including a demo of Android TalkBack
  • 18:00 - 18:08
    and his experience with
the accessibility feature for blind users.
  • 18:08 - 18:16
This part, this demo, will be done
    in the following fashion.
  • 18:16 - 18:22
So we will be sharing video
    with all of you.
  • 18:22 - 18:27
    So we will
-- you will have the opportunity --
  • 18:28 - 18:31
    I see here a request
    for a bigger CART window,
  • 18:31 - 18:36
    so I just apologize
    for the short interruption.
  • 18:36 - 18:39
    We will increase the size
    of the CART window,
  • 18:39 - 18:42
and we have increased also the font size.
  • 18:42 - 18:48
So I hope that that is working out
    for everyone.
  • 18:51 - 18:56
So we will be adding two more components
    now to the screen-sharing,
  • 18:56 - 19:00
and you will be able to see Jerry on video.
  • 19:01 - 19:02
    That is one part.
  • 19:03 - 19:06
    And the other part
    that is very significant,
  • 19:07 - 19:15
so as Jerry is running the demo
on the Moto Z Play phone using TalkBack,
  • 19:15 - 19:21
we will be sharing with you
the exact screen of Jerry's smartphone.
  • 19:22 - 19:27
    So please allow us
for just a couple of minutes
  • 19:27 - 19:30
    in order to make sure
    that the setup is okay
  • 19:30 - 19:34
    and that everyone has
    the optimal experience.
  • 20:20 - 20:27
    >> Jerry, are you ready?
    >> Yes, I'm here. I'm ready.
  • 20:29 - 20:34
    >> Okay. Just we are not seeing
    your video,
  • 20:34 - 20:37
so we need to confirm that.
  • 20:41 - 20:43
Emil, can you please check Jerry's video?
  • 21:17 - 21:18
Just a little bit of patience
  • 21:19 - 21:25
Trying to make sure that everyone
    is able to see Jerry.
  • 21:25 - 21:29
So I will mute myself and, Jerry,
if you can please start talking,
  • 21:29 - 21:33
    and that should trigger
    your video streaming.
  • 21:34 - 21:37
    >> Jerry Jicha: Oh that's .... (check)
    Good afternoon, everyone.
  • 21:37 - 21:39
My name here is Jerry Jicha
  • 21:39 - 21:42
    I do go by "Jerry."
    I prefer "Jerry," actually.
  • 21:43 - 21:52
I have been using Android since 2011,
so I have seen a lot of the, you know,
  • 21:53 - 21:56
    enhancements
that have come through to TalkBack,
  • 21:56 - 21:59
    including the very latest version
    in TalkBack,
  • 22:00 - 22:07
    some of the benefits
that have been put into TalkBack itself,
  • 22:07 - 22:11
some of which are through the fact
  • 22:11 - 22:16
that some of us who help
    with beta testing offer input,
  • 22:16 - 22:19
    and Google does listen,
  • 22:20 - 22:26
    and some of the things
    we've suggested or asked for
  • 22:26 - 22:28
have actually been put into place.
  • 22:29 - 22:31
    >> Nermin Selimic: Jerry, listen
    I apologize for interrupting.
  • 22:31 - 22:40
So we lost you on video,
so you will need to reenter the PIN.
  • 22:40 - 22:44
    >> Jerry Jicha: Okay, standby.
    >> Nermin Selimic: Okay.
  • 23:11 - 23:18
So, Jerry, the PIN is £1022£
    >> Jerry Jicha: Okay.
  • 23:18 - 23:20
It's telling me that the pin is invalid.
  • 23:23 - 23:29
    >> Nermin Selimic: DId you try the
    £1022£?
  • 23:30 - 23:33
    >> Jerry Jicha: That's not the one
he gave me before but I can try that.
  • 23:34 - 23:36
    >> Nermin Selimic: Yes,
    please try this one.
  • 23:47 - 23:49
    >> Jerry Jicha: Okay, it said "Thank you".
  • 23:51 - 23:55
    >> Nermin Selimic: Okay, So yes,
we can see you now. Excellent.
  • 23:55 - 23:57
    >> Jerry Jicha: There we go.
  • 23:59 - 24:03
    >> Nermin Selimic: The wonderful world
of technology from time to time.
  • 24:06 - 24:08
    >> Jerry Jicha: So as Nermin stated,
  • 24:08 - 24:12
    I'm going to be demonstrating
a lot of different things on TalkBack.
  • 24:12 - 24:16
One of the things I do want to stress
    to people
  • 24:16 - 24:19
When I have helped with Android
    in the past,
  • 24:21 - 24:23
several of the people have come
    from iPhone.
  • 24:24 - 24:28
And they would get really frustrated
    really quickly saying,
  • 24:28 - 24:31
    I can't use the Android,
    I can't use the Android.
  • 24:31 - 24:33
    One of the things
    that you will notice today,
  • 24:33 - 24:37
if you are familiar with iOS
    and Voiceover,
  • 24:38 - 24:42
is that there are some gestures
    that are the exact same
  • 24:42 - 24:45
as what they are on iOS.
  • 24:45 - 24:48
For example, flicking left, flicking right
  • 24:48 - 24:50
    -- and that's with one finger;
  • 24:51 - 24:54
using Explore By Touch, which that is
  • 24:54 - 24:57
when you just put your finger
    on the screen
  • 24:57 - 24:58
    and move your finger around.
  • 24:59 - 25:03
    That's the exact same,
also, double tapping is the exact same.
  • 25:04 - 25:06
    So just in that, alone,
  • 25:06 - 25:09
you have the very basics to
at least move around a bit.
  • 25:09 - 25:13
    There are some gestures>>
    that are very similar,
  • 25:13 - 25:16
but with maybe one less finger.
  • 25:16 - 25:20
For example, when you want to move
from page 1 to page 2,
  • 25:21 - 25:26
on iOS, as you know, you use a straight
    finger-swipe from left to right
  • 25:26 - 25:29
or right to left in pages.
  • 25:29 - 25:33
Whereas in Android, it is two finger swipe
from left to right or right to left.
  • 25:33 - 25:37
    So never tell yourself
    that you can't do it.
  • 25:37 - 25:43
Because if you have used Voiceover,
    then you can use Android.
  • 25:45 - 25:48
    That being said, Nermin,
where do we want to start?
  • 25:58 - 26:00
    Nermin?
  • 26:01 - 26:03
    >> Nermin Selimic: I apologize.
  • 26:04 - 26:07
The mute button is sometimes a mystery.
  • 26:07 - 26:13
So your screen is already turned on.
    (check)
  • 26:13 - 26:17
So if you can just show some basic
    home screen navigation,
  • 26:18 - 26:22
and then let's move into Settings
    after that
  • 26:22 - 26:24
    >> Jerry Jicha: It's all right, because
    it is very important
  • 26:24 - 26:28
to be able to manage the settings
such as the ring tone and so on.
  • 26:28 - 26:36
    >> Nermin Selimic: OK
    (Crosstalk about Jerry's screen) (check)
  • 26:36 - 26:38
And let's navigate over the screen
  • 26:38 - 26:43
so we will have that visual experience
    into TalkBack.
  • 26:47 - 26:49
    >> Nermin Selimic: And just
    as a quick reminder,
  • 26:49 - 26:52
I think we have someone who joined
who may not have heard before:
  • 26:53 - 26:59
Please make sure phones are muted
    for optimal audio for everybody.
  • 27:00 - 27:02
    >> Jerry Jicha: So we're going
    to demonstrate now
  • 27:02 - 27:06
    the very basic gestures
    of getting around in TalkBack.
  • 27:07 - 27:11
    Hopefully, you guys can see
most of the screen, if not all.
  • 27:13 - 27:16
    So I will go ahead
    and turn the phone on,
  • 27:16 - 27:17
and I will just use my fingerprint
    to do it.
  • 27:17 - 27:19
    I'm not even going
    to push the power button.
  • 27:21 - 27:22
    Okay
  • 27:22 - 27:24
    >> VOICE: ... Device unlocked.
    There we go.
  • 27:24 - 27:26
    1:34 p.m.
    >> Jerry Jicha: It was already on
  • 27:26 - 27:27
    >> VOICE: Google now launching.
  • 27:28 - 27:31
    >> Jerry Jicha: All right,
so I'm going to put my finger up here.
  • 27:31 - 27:34
    >> VOICE: Google search.
    Double press to activate.
  • 27:35 - 27:38
    >> Jerry Jicha: I'm just going to show you
    the Explore by Touch first.
  • 27:39 - 27:43
    So as I've stated,
if I move my finger across the screen --
  • 27:43 - 27:46
    >> VOICE: Google search,
Double tap to activate Google Apps (check).
  • 27:46 - 27:48
    (unclear) ... 553 bars
  • 27:49 - 27:51
    Google Apps
    Voice search button.
  • 27:51 - 27:53
    Google search, rescue.
  • 27:53 - 27:55
    (unclear) .... Chrome
  • 27:55 - 27:57
    ... RAZ Mobility installer.
  • 27:57 - 28:01
    Actions: remove, uninstall move ...
    double press to activate
  • 28:01 - 28:03
    Double pass ..... press.
  • 28:03 - 28:05
    >> Jerry Jicha: So as you see,
    it actually reads everything
  • 28:05 - 28:08
that I was moving my finger across.
  • 28:09 - 28:14
Now, again, flicking forward and backward,
    meaning left and right.
  • 28:14 - 28:16
    Again, it's the same thing.
  • 28:16 - 28:17
    Find an icon.
  • 28:17 - 28:20
    >> VOICE: Working at Google app,
    working....
  • 28:21 - 28:23
    >> Nermin Selimic: Sorry, listen,
    just a second.
  • 28:23 - 28:26
    I believe we are experiencing
    some technical difficulty.
  • 28:27 - 28:31
    There are some participants
who cannot see you on video.
  • 28:32 - 28:34
    >> Jerry Jicha: Okay.
  • 28:35 - 28:40
    >> VOICE: Charging battery level 100%.
    Dual power charged to 100%.
  • 28:41 - 28:43
    Power charged to 100%.
  • 28:44 - 28:46
    >> Nermin Selimic: Ehm.
  • 28:58 - 29:01
-- are there participants who can
    see Jerry on video?
  • 29:04 - 29:11
    >> Yes, I can see him. I can see him.
  • 29:11 - 29:13
    >> Now, we can.
  • 29:13 - 29:14
    >> I have never seen his video screen
  • 29:14 - 29:17
    but the ScreenMeet window
    is simply closed.
  • 29:17 - 29:19
There is no video from his phone.
  • 29:19 - 29:23
    >> Nermin Selimic:
Yes, we will try to reinitiate that
  • 29:23 - 29:27
And just for Jerry's video, it will only
be present when he is talking.
  • 29:27 - 29:31
So now, when I am talking, obviously,
    you won't be seeing Jerry,
  • 29:31 - 29:37
but during the time when he is talking,
you should be able to see Jerry.
  • 29:41 - 29:53
Just a little bit of patience
until we reinitiate the Screen Meet.
  • 29:55 - 29:58
So Jerry, the Screen Meet is closed.
  • 30:01 - 30:04
    >> VOICE: New button, over (incomprehensible)
  • 30:04 - 30:06
    >> Nermin Selimic: ....if there is a means (unclear)
    to reactivate it.
  • 30:06 - 30:08
    >> VOICE: (incmprehensible)
  • 30:08 - 30:11
Double tap to activate ... searches.
  • 30:11 - 30:14
    >> Nermin Selimic: Sorry, Jerry --
    >> Jerry Jicha: Nermin --
  • 30:14 - 30:18
Nermin, Nermin, there is a reason why:
it says I have to purchase it.
  • 30:19 - 30:22
    >> Nermin Selimic: OK, no worries.
  • 30:22 - 30:27
I will actually initiate it here
    from a different location
  • 30:27 - 30:30
    and we will be following
    as your making progress.
  • 30:30 - 30:31
    So just a second.
  • 30:32 - 30:35
We will have here another session.
  • 30:54 - 31:00
    Okay. So, Jerry, please continue,
and I will try to follow your text. (check)
  • 31:01 - 31:05
    >> Jerry Jicha: Okay. So basically,
as I was going to say earlier --
  • 31:05 - 31:07
let me get back to the home screen here.
  • 31:08 - 31:12
So basically, I will find an icon
    on my screen.
  • 31:12 - 31:15
    >> VOICE (Incomprehensible) MPM
    Google Now! launcher
  • 31:16 - 31:18
    >> Jerry Jicha: And so now
I'm going to flick to the right.
  • 31:19 - 31:26
    >> VOICE: (incomprehensible) RAZ Mobility
    Installer, (incomp) Play Store.
  • 31:27 - 31:31
    >> Jerry Jicha: So as you see
    I am actually moving forward
  • 31:31 - 31:34
    and if I flick backwards
-- in other words, flick to the left --
  • 31:35 - 31:41
    >> VOICE: ... Google.RAZ Mobility ....
    Action
  • 31:41 - 31:43
    >> Jerry Jicha: It moves backwards through

  • 31:43 - 31:47
and real quick you see me waving
my hand over the top of the screen
  • 31:47 - 31:49
and then all of a sudden TalkBack stops.
  • 31:50 - 31:53
Let's think of it as the control key,
  • 31:53 - 31:57
if you are using a Windows computer
    with JAWS or Window-Eyes,
  • 31:57 - 32:03
Waving your hand in front of the proximity
sensor is the same, it's the equivalent.
  • 32:04 - 32:06
Alright, so now that we've done
    all of that,
  • 32:06 - 32:07
I'll go ahead and go into settings.
  • 32:08 - 32:13
And that's a very important area,
so I'm going to go to the app drawer.
  • 32:17 - 32:21
And because I've gone to settings
    rather frequently,
  • 32:21 - 32:25
up above the top of the app drawer
is going to be four icons
  • 32:25 - 32:27
    that you've used rather frequently,
  • 32:30 - 32:32
and for menu settings, it's right there.
  • 32:32 - 32:36
    >> VOICE: ... double pass to activate
double pass and hold ..... press
  • 32:36 - 32:40
    Settings settings
    Showing items 1 to 9 of 36.
  • 32:41 - 32:44
    >> Jerry Jicha: All right.
So now we are in settings.
  • 32:44 - 32:48
And here we can show you that
Explore By Touch works just as well.
  • 32:48 - 32:50
Again if you put your finger
    on the screen,
  • 32:51 - 32:54
    >> VOICE: ....
    list 36 items.
  • 32:54 - 32:56
    >> Jerry Jicha: So I'm just going to move
    my finger down.
  • 32:56 - 33:01
    >> VOICE: ... WiFi ...
    Bluetooth disconnected
  • 33:01 - 33:06
    ..... Double press to activate.
  • 33:06 - 33:08
    >> Jerry Jicha: Now I am down
to the bottom of the screen,
  • 33:08 - 33:10
    you are probably wondering
    how do you get
  • 33:10 - 33:12
    more items on the screen?
  • 33:12 - 33:15
    Take two fingers
and slide them up the screen
  • 33:15 - 33:17
as if you are pulling a page up.
  • 33:17 - 33:22
    (Ascending beeps)
    >> VOICE: Showing items 7 to 14 of 36.
  • 33:22 - 33:24
    >> Jerry Jicha: And as you know, TalkBack
    does this sound,
  • 33:24 - 33:26
    letting you know
    you are doing it correctly.
  • 33:26 - 33:30
    And also when you stop,
    TalkBack will tell you now
  • 33:30 - 33:33
how many of the items are on the screen
    and where you are at.
  • 33:34 - 33:37
    >> VOICE: Data usage ...
  • 33:37 - 33:42
    Notifications, sound ringer volume
    at 100%... Press to activate.
  • 33:42 - 33:44
    >> Jerry Jicha: We want to show you
how to go in and change,
  • 33:44 - 33:48
    let's say, like, your ringer.
  • 33:48 - 33:51
So, going here, in the sound –
  • 33:51 - 33:53
    >> VOICE: Sound. Showing items 1
    through 8 of 12.
  • 33:54 - 33:59
Ring volume in list 12 item
-- also vibrate for calls off switch.
  • 33:59 - 34:01
    >> Jerry Jicha: And you can just
    flick through the settings.
  • 34:01 - 34:07
    >> VOICE: Do not disturb. Phone ring tone
Digital phone. Double tap to activate.
  • 34:07 - 34:09
    >> Jerry Jicha: Simply double tap on it.
  • 34:10 - 34:14
    >> VOICE: Media storage. Showing items
    52 to 60 of 191.
  • 34:15 - 34:17
    >> Jerry Jicha: Telling me
    how many ringers I've got.
  • 34:18 - 34:23
    >> VOICE: ... in list of 191 items.
    Double tap to toggle.
  • 34:23 - 34:26
    >> Jerry Jicha: So it's actually not
not a double tap, double tap to toggle.
  • 34:26 - 34:28
What it is is If you want to hear
    a ring tone,
  • 34:29 - 34:32
you just simply double tap it.
  • 34:32 - 34:37
    (Music plays.)
  • 34:37 - 34:39
And as you see, it plays it.
  • 34:39 - 34:41
If you want to accept it --
  • 34:42 - 34:47
    >> VOICE: ... Okay Button.
    Down, showing items 1...
  • 34:47 - 34:48
    >> Jerry Jicha: -- down at the bottom,
  • 34:48 - 34:52
    right above where
your home and overview buttons are,
  • 34:52 - 34:53
    you've got OK and Cancel.
  • 34:53 - 34:56
And I hit the OK button so it would stop.
  • 34:56 - 35:01
So now I have changed my ringtone to –
some of you may have noticed
  • 35:01 - 35:02
    the Night Rider theme song.
  • 35:03 - 35:09
And as you also noticed, you can hear
TalkBack over the top of the ringtone
  • 35:09 - 35:11
    rather well,
without doing any type of ducking.
  • 35:13 - 35:16
    Display, or let's some --
  • 35:16 - 35:20
    Volume is another good one
that we really need to look at,
  • 35:21 - 35:23
    because whether you need
to turn it up or down,
  • 35:24 - 35:26
well, there's a couple different ways
    you can do it.
  • 35:26 - 35:28
The easiest at least for me --
  • 35:28 - 35:33
    >> VOICE: Media volume, double tap
    to activate, 100% seek control.
  • 35:34 - 35:38
    >> Jerry Jicha: Now here's
one of the enhancements in Android.
  • 35:38 - 35:39
    It's a seek control.
  • 35:40 - 35:46
And back in older days, you had to double
tap and hold your finger on the screen
  • 35:46 - 35:49
and slide your finger to move the slider.
  • 35:49 - 35:51
    Not anymore.
  • 35:51 - 35:54
I can simply use my volume up
    and volume down keys
  • 35:55 - 35:58
    to change the volume level.
  • 35:58 - 36:01
So if I press volume down a couple times.
  • 36:01 - 36:08
    >> VOICE: 93% seek control.
    86 % seek control. 80% seek control.
  • 36:08 - 36:11
    73% seek control. ...
  • 36:11 - 36:13
    >> Jerry Jicha: And as you notice,
    it is getting quieter.
  • 36:13 - 36:16
So I can turn it back on,
    just by pressing Volume Up.
  • 36:16 - 36:20
    >> VOICE: 73% seek control
    100% seek control
  • 36:20 - 36:23
    >> Jerry Jicha: And there you go!
So that is how you can use sliders now.
  • 36:26 - 36:28
    Real quick, the display.
  • 36:28 - 36:32
    >> VOICE: Back button, settings, display.
  • 36:32 - 36:36
    Adaptive brightness is off
    in list of Display,
  • 36:37 - 36:39
Brightness level, in list, eleven items.
  • 36:40 - 36:46
    Brightness -- brightness, 0 percent
    Display brightness
  • 36:46 - 36:48
Seek control out of list Brightness.
  • 36:48 - 36:49
    >> Jerry Jicha: If you are totally blind,
  • 36:49 - 36:52
this is one of the things
    I suggest you do,
  • 36:52 - 36:56
    is turning your level,
your brightness level down to 0%.
  • 36:56 - 37:00
Again, we are on a slider,
so if I want to turn my display up
  • 37:00 - 37:02
I'll just do it quickly here.
  • 37:02 - 37:08
    5% display brightness seek control.
    41% display brightness seek control.
  • 37:08 - 37:10
    >> Jerry Jicha: And hopefully,
in the video you can tell
  • 37:10 - 37:12
    my display has gotten brighter.
  • 37:13 - 37:14
So I'll turn it back down to 0.
  • 37:15 - 37:18
    >> VOICE: 36% display brightness
    seek control
  • 37:18 - 37:21
    0% display brightness seek control.
  • 37:21 - 37:24
    >> Jerry Jicha: And then when you are
    done, you don't have to hit OK;
  • 37:24 - 37:25
    you just hit back.
  • 37:25 - 37:27
    >> VOICE: Back button, display.
  • 37:27 - 37:30
    >> Jerry Jicha: One of the things we
    probably should have told you
  • 37:30 - 37:33
    is, in Android,
or at least on the Moto Z Play,
  • 37:33 - 37:38
down at the bottom, you've got 3 buttons:
you've got Back, Home, and Overview.
  • 37:38 - 37:45
    >> Hello >> Yes? >> Oh no.
    >> Hello. Hello?
  • 37:51 - 37:55
    >> Jerry Jicha: Nermin, is everything OK?
    >> Nermin Selimic: Yes, we can hear you.
  • 37:55 - 37:58
    >> Jerry Jicha: OK.
So where should we go after that?
  • 37:58 - 38:01
I mean, what about if someone, or what?
  • 38:02 - 38:04
    The speed of TalkBack
or where do you want me to go?
  • 38:06 - 38:08
    >> Nermin Selimic: Just before we move
    to that one,
  • 38:08 - 38:10
I think it is always very interesting,
  • 38:10 - 38:13
let's see the activation and deactivation
    of Bluetooth.
  • 38:16 - 38:18
    >> Jerry Jicha: Okay. Well,
  • 38:18 - 38:21
    I don't have anything
    in Bluetooth on here,
  • 38:21 - 38:23
but it's real simple to do.
  • 38:23 - 38:28
    >> VOICE: ... mode ....
    .... Settings
  • 38:28 - 38:32
    More. In list data usage,
    Bluetooth disconnected.
  • 38:32 - 38:35
    >> Jerry Jicha: ... I can go
    into the Bluetooth window.
  • 38:36 - 38:41
    >> VOICE: Bluetooth, navigate....
    Bluetooth. More options button,
  • 38:41 - 38:44
On switch. Double tap to toggle.
  • 38:44 - 38:50
    >> Jerry Jicha: Bluetooth is on,
and notice it does say it is on,
  • 38:50 - 38:56
if I simply double tap that, now it's off.
    >> VOICE: Off.
  • 38:57 - 39:01
    >> Jerry Jicha: So if you have something
    that is Bluetooth capable
  • 39:01 - 39:03
and you want to connect it
    to your Android,
  • 39:03 - 39:04
you do it through from within..
  • 39:04 - 39:08
I don't have anything connected to it
    at the moment,
  • 39:08 - 39:10
but in here is where you would do it.
  • 39:11 - 39:18
As you can see, it is showing
    the items that are available.
  • 39:18 - 39:22
    >> VOICE: On switch; input the results
    ...wireless keyboard.
  • 39:23 - 39:33
    Available Bluetooth one through 9.
    Key 6133 – (indiscernible).
  • 39:33 - 39:36
    >> So it's showing what is available.
  • 39:38 - 39:40
    >> Nermin Selimic: Let's spend
    a little bit more time
  • 39:40 - 39:43
    looking into the software settings.
    Voice Bridge, Speak, et cetera.
  • 39:43 - 39:44
    >> Jerry Jicha: All right.
  • 39:52 - 39:56
You can get the stuff for TalkBack through the accessibility,
  • 39:59 - 40:02
so we will go to -- we will have to scroll.
  • 40:06 - 40:19
    >> VOICE: (Talking).
  • 40:20 - 40:23
    >> Jerry Jicha: One moment here.
  • 40:25 - 40:29
    >> VOICE: Back button, back up and reset.
  • 40:30 - 40:32
    Motorola, showing items...
    Paragraph. Printing, 0 print jobs.
  • 40:33 - 40:34
    Accessibility.
  • 40:37 - 40:39
    >> Jerry Jicha: So we go there.
  • 40:41 - 40:41
    >> VOICE: Accessibility, services,
    TalkBack on.
  • 40:43 - 40:48
    Double tap to activate. TalkBack.
  • 40:51 - 40:52
    >> Jerry Jicha: And the settings button,
it's up there in the top right corner.
  • 40:54 - 40:57
    >> VOICE: TalkBack settings.
    Speech speech, volume.
  • 41:00 - 41:00
    Text-to-speech settings.
    Double tap to activate.
  • 41:02 - 41:05
    >> Jerry Jicha: Text-to-speech settings
is what Nermin was talking about,
  • 41:05 - 41:08
    so let's go there.
  • 41:08 - 41:11
Now, if you are able to see my screen,
  • 41:11 - 41:16
here is where you might see
    something different.
  • 41:16 - 41:18
When you get your Moto Z play,
  • 41:18 - 41:21
    you only have
    the Google text-to-speech engine.
  • 41:21 - 41:24
    However, those of you
    who can see my screen
  • 41:24 - 41:27
can see I actually have a couple others.
  • 41:27 - 41:35
This is one thing you cannot do on iOS
    as far as buying synthesizers
  • 41:35 - 41:38
    and using them with voiceover.
  • 41:38 - 41:44
For example, and I will use
    a particular synthesizer real quick
  • 41:44 - 41:50
just to show you that it is there, and
it is one that a lot of blind people like.
  • 41:50 - 41:52
They find it very easy to understand,
  • 41:52 - 41:53
and we're not going to spend
a lot of time on it,
  • 41:53 - 41:56
but I will just show you it is there.
  • 41:56 - 42:00
    >> VOICE: (Talking).
  • 42:00 - 42:03
    >> Jerry Jicha: All of us know "Eloquence."
  • 42:04 - 42:07
And the phone is just basically telling me
  • 42:07 - 42:14
    what this software synthesizer
might have the capability of doing.
  • 42:14 - 42:16
So I just have to hit OK.
  • 42:19 - 42:22
    So if any of you
    can hear that pretty well,
  • 42:24 - 42:28
    there is the voice
    you should be familiar with.
  • 42:30 - 42:31
    Now, it does cost more
    but one of the benefits
  • 42:35 - 42:38
is that it is a lot more responsive
    than the Google GPS.
  • 42:38 - 42:40
    I will go ahead
    and switch back to Google,
  • 42:42 - 42:45
    and one of the things
    you wanted us to demonstrate
  • 42:45 - 42:48
was the pitch and the speed.
  • 42:49 - 42:52
    >> VOICE: 15% speech rate.
    Double tap to activate.
  • 42:52 - 42:57
    >> Jerry Jicha: So below your engines,
you will find your pitch and your speed.
  • 42:57 - 42:58
    Speed is the first one.
  • 42:58 - 43:01
    >> VOICE: 15% speed control.
    Press volume speech to adjust.
  • 43:03 - 43:06
    >> Jerry Jicha: It is telling us
    what to do.
  • 43:07 - 43:12
So use your down key whenever
    you have your slider highlighted.
  • 43:14 - 43:17
    >> VOICE: 10% speed control.
    5% speed control (slower).
  • 43:19 - 43:23
    >> Jerry Jicha: Or if you want it faster.
  • 43:23 - 43:24
    >> VOICE: (Talking faster).
  • 43:24 - 43:27
    >> Jerry Jicha: You can see
it does it on the fly,
  • 43:27 - 43:31
so you can hear how fast
it is going to talking when you do it.
  • 43:32 - 43:37
    >> VOICE: 15% speed control.
  • 43:38 - 43:43
    >> Jerry Jicha: And as far as pitch
-- there is pitch right there.
  • 43:45 - 43:49
    >> VOICE: 20% speed control.
    Pitch volume keys to adjust.
  • 43:51 - 43:55
    >> Jerry Jicha: If I want
    to lower its pitch,
  • 43:56 - 43:57
5% speed control, 10% speed control.
  • 44:01 - 44:05
    >> Jerry Jicha: I just use the volume keys
to raise or lower the pitch.
  • 44:07 - 44:09
    And there you go!
  • 44:09 - 44:14
So there again, the very basics
of setting your settings – the speech
  • 44:14 - 44:16
    the way you want it
and what is comfortable for you.
  • 44:20 - 44:23
    >> Nermin Selimic: That was great, Jerry.
    Thanks a lot.
  • 44:23 - 44:26
    Are there any tips
you can provide to users with,
  • 44:26 - 44:32
    it's not for switching permanently
    on or off TalkBack,
  • 44:33 - 44:37
    but just to provide everyone
    the opportunity to understand
  • 44:37 - 44:44
how easy it is to suspend
    and reactivate TalkBack?
  • 44:44 - 44:45
    >> Jerry Jicha: All right.
  • 44:45 - 44:47
So let's say that you've got someone
    next to you
  • 44:47 - 44:49
who wants to borrow your phone,
    they are sighted
  • Not Synced
    Obviously, (A),
they won't know how to use TalkBack.
  • Not Synced
(B), it might get in the way.
  • Not Synced
So it is really easy to suspend TalkBack.
  • Not Synced
All you have to do is go back here.
And what I will do --
  • Not Synced
    >> VOICE: TalkBack, back, accessibility.
    Items 1 through 8 of 22.
  • Not Synced
    Back button, settings.
  • Not Synced
    >> Jerry Jicha: So I wanted
    to get somewhere.
  • Not Synced
At any rate, what I will do
    is press and hold
  • Not Synced
the volume up and volume down keys
for about a second to two seconds.
  • Not Synced
    >> VOICE: Suspend TalkBack, TalkBack.
  • Not Synced
    >> Jerry Jicha: All right.
So if I flip through this screen here.
  • Not Synced
    >> VOICE: Are you sure you want to
    suspend TalkBack?
  • Not Synced
    You can resume TalkBack
    from the notification
  • Not Synced
by returning to the lock screen.
  • Not Synced
Only show this warning, check box.
  • Not Synced
    >> Jerry Jicha: It will always have
    this dialogue every time
  • Not Synced
unless you change this check box,
which is what I am going to do.
  • Not Synced
I don't want to see that check box.
  • Not Synced
    >> VOICE: Cancel button.
    >> Jerry Jicha: I will hit OK.
  • Not Synced
    >> VOICE: TalkBack suspended.
  • Not Synced
    >> Jerry Jicha: And now,
I don't want to go touching my phone,
  • Not Synced
but if I did, now another person
    can use it
  • Not Synced
    because TalkBack is suspended.
  • Not Synced
See, I am touching my screen,
    and there's nothing.
  • Not Synced
    So to bring TalkBack back,
    it's real simple.
  • Not Synced
Go ahead and turn your phone off
  • Not Synced
-- well, push the power button,
so that the screen is off.
  • Not Synced
And then simply turn the screen back on.
  • Not Synced
    >> VOICE: TalkBack resumed.
  • Not Synced
    >> Jerry Jicha: And notice it's back.
    Go ahead and unblock.
  • Not Synced
    >> VOICE: Unblock. Settings.
  • Not Synced
    >> Jerry Jicha: And as you see,
TalkBack is back up and running
  • Not Synced
the way it used to be.
  • Not Synced
And now -- I want to show you real quick
because I checked that check box.
  • Not Synced
    Now, when I suspend TalkBack
using the two volume keys --
  • Not Synced
    >> VOICE: TalkBack suspended.
  • Not Synced
    >> Jerry Jicha: -- it just
    immediately suspends it.
  • Not Synced
You don't have to hit the OK button
if you uncheck that check box.
  • Not Synced
    >> VOICE: TalkBack resumed.
  • Not Synced
    >> Jerry Jicha: And there you go!
  • Not Synced
    >> Nermin Selimic: Excellent.
  • Not Synced
    In your experience, Jerry,
how much are you relying on the device?
  • Not Synced
Are you using the OK Google?
How is it working out for you?
  • Not Synced
    >> Jerry Jicha: I use it
    from time to time.
  • Not Synced
I don't use it all the time.
  • Not Synced
But there are some things you can do
    that is rather nice.
  • Not Synced
You can tell it to call people.
You can use it to send a text message.
  • Not Synced
You can also ask a general question,
    just like Siri, you know,
  • Not Synced
what is the temperature, things like that.
  • Not Synced
And it's just as responsive as, you know,
Siri would be on the iPhone.
  • Not Synced
You can even use it to open apps.
    Playing music.
  • Not Synced
    Possibly even going to websites.
  • Not Synced
I just personally don't use it
    all the time,
  • Not Synced
    but, you know, for example,
if I am just out and about,
  • Not Synced
    and I want to know
    what the temperature is,
  • Not Synced
I could just say, OK, Google,
    what is the temperature?
  • Not Synced
    >> VOICE: it is 62 degrees,
  • Not Synced
    >> Jerry Jicha: So it's 62 degrees.
  • Not Synced
And on the screen it shows
the weather for where I'm at.
  • Not Synced
You probably can't see it very well
just because of my screen is dimmed,
  • Not Synced
and I don't know how good
    a webcam will show it.
  • Not Synced
But if I were to touch the screen --
  • Not Synced
    >> VOICE: Menu button.
    Select today, tomorrow.
  • Not Synced
    >> Jerry Jicha: So it does have
a weather card up on the screen
  • Not Synced
    right at the moment.
  • Not Synced
    >> VOICE: Back button, home screen.
    >> Jerry Jicha: Go ahead.
  • Not Synced
    >> Nermin Selimic: I think
    what is important to mention
  • Not Synced
is that in my experience, as a user
you are talking about voice commands
  • Not Synced
available to Google on Android devices,
  • Not Synced
and if you are talking about Siri,
it is worth it to mention that
  • Not Synced
on the Android side, for voice command,
  • Not Synced
    it is not only about
    the fewer voice commands,
  • Not Synced
but it is also about the fact that
  • Not Synced
    the whole power of Google
    stands behind that.
  • Not Synced
    Correct? So there are
    additional algorithms,
  • Not Synced
    there are additional options,
  • Not Synced
that a certain command is being given
to voice command and so on,
  • Not Synced
that there is significantly more going on
  • Not Synced
    and significantly more being available
    in the background
  • Not Synced
in order to determine if the voice command
    wasn't 100% clear.
  • Not Synced
    What is it actually that
the user is trying to accomplish?
  • Not Synced
So at least in my user experience,
    this was significant.
  • Not Synced
Sometimes I will be struggling with Siri,
because what am I supposed to do?
  • Not Synced
    What commands on Google that
  • Not Synced
-- that doesn't happen with Google
    too frequently.
  • Not Synced
    With that being said, Jerry,
we are talking about the smartphone.
  • Not Synced
So smartphones are doing many things
that at the end of the day
  • Not Synced
it is being used for phone communication.
  • Not Synced
So I would like to show participants
    how to manage phone calls
  • Not Synced
    when dealing with Android accessibility.
  • Not Synced
So as the first part of that,
I will be actually placing a call,
  • Not Synced
and I will be calling you,
  • Not Synced
and just to illustrate to everyone
how you will be answering the call.
  • Not Synced
    >> Jerry Jicha: Okay.
  • Not Synced
One of the things you do have to do,
    unfortunately,
  • Not Synced
    there is no gesture
    for answering the phone.
  • Not Synced
You have to find the answer button.
  • Not Synced
    – found the answer button,
    double tapped it,
  • Not Synced
and now I am on the phone call.
  • Not Synced
One thing I do find in TalkBack is
  • Not Synced
you do have the ability to set
the power button as a hang-up button.
  • Not Synced
So trying to find the end button
    on the screen,
  • Not Synced
    you can actually just
    push the power button
  • Not Synced
    and it will actually
    just hang up the call.
  • Not Synced
What do you want to do
    at this point, Nermin?
  • Not Synced
    >> Nermin Selimic: Jerry,
    let's place a call, please.
  • Not Synced
    >> Jerry Jicha: Okay.
  • Not Synced
    So a couple different ways
    we could do it.
  • Not Synced
    We could cheat
and use Google to do it.
  • Not Synced
    But we will do it
    he old-fashioned way
  • Not Synced
and go to the phone app.
  • Not Synced
    >> VOICE: Home screen one.
Phone. Showing item one of one.
  • Not Synced
    >> Jerry Jicha: And we will choose
    the dial pad button.
  • Not Synced
    >> VOICE: Dial pad button.
  • Not Synced
    >> Jerry Jicha: Which is pretty much
    below the home button.
  • Not Synced
We will call a screen -- we will call
    local time and temperature.
  • Not Synced
It is not local to me,
but it is local by about 20 miles.
  • Not Synced
    >> VOICE: By the way, Jerry,
    excellent presentation.
  • Not Synced
    Phone dial pad.
  • Not Synced
    >> Jerry Jicha: All right!
  • Not Synced
    There is something else that
we were going to be bringing up soon.
  • Not Synced
As you saw, I just got a text message
and you just heard what it said.
  • Not Synced
    You talk back,
read the notification as it came in.
  • Not Synced
So we will show you how to respond to that
and look at it here in just a moment.
  • Not Synced
So we will really quickly dial
    a phone number here.
  • Not Synced
    >> VOICE: Selection -- --
    >> Jerry Jicha: You just lift your \finger.
  • Not Synced
    >> VOICE: 4 (speaking numbers.)
  • Not Synced
    >> Jerry Jicha: 4-1-9-6-7-3-4-7-0-1.
  • Not Synced
    I could double-check that
by looking at the edit box.
  • Not Synced
    I dialed that number.
  • Not Synced
Right below the 0 is your dial button,
and there you go. And ... [ Pause ].
  • Not Synced
    >> Nermin Selimic: I'm sorry --
  • Not Synced
    >> Jerry Jicha: Oops. Hang on.
  • Not Synced
    >> Nermin Selimic: I'm sorry.
  • Not Synced
    >> Jerry Jicha: I was trying
to hang up the call. (Laughing).
  • Not Synced
    >> Nermin Selimic: Also
one of the very frequent scenarios
  • Not Synced
is obviously users browsing a website.
  • Not Synced
    So let's just -- browse a website.
  • Not Synced
Let's go to CNN.com or something like that
and see how that is working out.
  • Not Synced
    >> VOICE: Unlocked. 2:01 p.m.
    Home screen one of three.
  • Not Synced
    Overview, Google now launching.
    Overview button. Double tap.
  • Not Synced
    >> Jerry Jicha: So we can open Chrome.
  • Not Synced
    >> VOICE: 70%, 100%.
    Http:(),
  • Not Synced
    click notification, message pending.
  • Not Synced
    Http Section:// –
  • Not Synced
    >> Jerry Jicha: Now,
one of the nice things you can do –
  • Not Synced
    as you can see,
I am using my volume keys.
  • Not Synced
    >> VOICE: Slash, equal files …
  • Not Synced
    >> Jerry Jicha: I can use the volume keys
to move through the edit field.
  • Not Synced
So there's a lot to the voice,
  • Not Synced
I think there was a Clear All,
but I don't think there is.
  • Not Synced
    >> VOICE: Delete, delete,
    delete, delete.
  • Not Synced
    >> Jerry Jicha: It looks like
    I have done a –
  • Not Synced
I have a lot here to delete.
  • Not Synced
    >> VOICE: Key delete. Delete.
    Delete. Key delete.
  • Not Synced
    >> Jerry Jicha: Unfortunately,
you can't just hold down the delete key.
  • Not Synced
    >> VOICE: Progress 70 percent.
    End rescue.comment delete.
  • Not Synced
    Key deleted 90%. Delete, delete.
    Key delete. Deleted.
  • Not Synced
    >> VOICE: Key delete, delete.
    Key deleted.
  • Not Synced
    Delete. Delete. Delete. Delete.
  • Not Synced
    >> Jerry Jicha: I wonder
    if I could get out
  • Not Synced
    and just use Google.
  • Not Synced
    >> Nermin Selimic: Let's try it.
    Let's do that.
  • Not Synced
    >> VOICE: 2:03 p.m.
  • Not Synced
    >> Jerry Jicha: Okay. OK Google,
    open www.CNN.com.
  • Not Synced
    >> VOICE: Open Web page.
    Progress bar, 26%. 77%. 81%.
  • Not Synced
CNN bringing you the latest news
    and video.
  • Not Synced
    98%. Link.
  • Not Synced
    Former United States First Lady
    Michelle Obama's
  • Not Synced
    file on architecture speech
    in Orlando, Florida.
  • Not Synced
    >> Jerry Jicha: If you wanted
    to read that,
  • Not Synced
you would simply double tap on it
  • Not Synced
    because it did say "link"
    at the very end.
  • Not Synced
    >> Nermin Selimic: Excellent.
  • Not Synced
I think that was very, very helpful.
  • Not Synced
Jerry, do you believe it's interesting
just to show installing new apps?
  • Not Synced
    It's always very, very relevant,
  • Not Synced
so could you just illustrate the process
how to install a new app?
  • Not Synced
    >> Jerry Jicha: All right.
    So it's actually pretty easy.
  • Not Synced
We will go to the home screen.
  • Not Synced
    >> VOICE: Home button. Home button.
    Home screen one of three.
  • Not Synced
    >> Jerry Jicha:
And we need the Play Store.
  • Not Synced
    >> VOICE: Chrome. Play Store.
    Play Store, apps and games.
  • Not Synced
    >> Jerry Jicha: So we can
    do a voice search
  • Not Synced
or we could just type it.
  • Not Synced
    >> VOICE: Search button.
    >> Jerry Jicha: Weather Bug.
  • Not Synced
    >> VOICE: Play Store.
Weather Bug widget, star rating 0.703.
  • Not Synced
    Weather by Weather Bug everyone.
    Star rating -- 18,405 reviews.
  • Not Synced
    >> Jerry Jicha: All right.
  • Not Synced
So if I wanted to install weather bug,
first thing I have to do
  • Not Synced
    is actually select the app.
  • Not Synced
    >> VOICE: Showing items
    4 and 5 of 16.
  • Not Synced
    Weather Bug. Search Google Play.
  • Not Synced
    Weather Bug.
    Weather by Weather Bug.
  • Not Synced
    Installed button.
  • Not Synced
    >> Jerry Jicha: I will double tap
    the install button
  • Not Synced
    >> VOICE: Play Store,
    showing items 1 to 4 of 17.
  • Not Synced
    Weather by Weather Bug.
    Cancel by hitting button.
  • Not Synced
    >> Jerry Jicha: It's still downloading
    the Weather Bug.
  • Not Synced
Notice I am using Explore By Touch.
  • Not Synced
That's how I noticed I could go ahead
and open it if I want to.
  • Not Synced
I can open it right from here
    if I want to,
but that is how you install an app.
  • Not Synced
    It's done. It's already done.
    It's that simple to do.
  • Not Synced
    >> Nermin Selimic: Excellent.
    Thanks, Jerry.
  • Not Synced
So it does illustrate text messages,
    you received one.
  • Not Synced
I think just in the interest of time,
  • Not Synced
    because there are
    several other categories
  • Not Synced
that we would like to cover today,
I think it is very intuitive,
  • Not Synced
    how it works, for people
to send text messages and –
  • Not Synced
    to receive text messages,
  • Not Synced
    and for sending text messages,
  • Not Synced
there is the option to utilize
    either voice commands
  • Not Synced
or just to type using TalkBack.
  • Not Synced
So I think this is also a good Segway
    into the third-party application.
  • Not Synced
You I believe we will not have
    sufficient time to demo
  • Not Synced
    all of the applications,
  • Not Synced
but we can briefly touch on them
and I will be pulling up
  • Not Synced
some of these applications for everyone.
  • Not Synced
And, Jerry, if you can share
    some of your experience
  • Not Synced
    about several \apps.
  • Not Synced
The first one that comes to my mind is,
    Tap Tap See.
  • Not Synced
    >> Jerry Jicha: Actually,
I was going to say that
  • Not Synced
there are two of them that come to mind
    that are my biggest favorites.
  • Not Synced
Tap Tap See is one of them.
  • Not Synced
How many times have you gone
    into your refrigerator?
  • Not Synced
    You have bought frozen pizzas
    or even lasagna.
  • Not Synced
    My girlfriend and I
    have been buying lasagnas lately.
  • Not Synced
    She likes the five-cheese.
    I like the meat lovers.
  • Not Synced
The boxes are the exact same size.
  • Not Synced
No way to know which is which.
  • Not Synced
    Let's use Tap Tap See.
  • Not Synced
You can take a picture of an item
  • Not Synced
and it may actually tell you
what it is in most cases.
  • Not Synced
    Now, there are times depending
on lighting and things like that
  • Not Synced
that it may not work right away.
  • Not Synced
    Try to change the angle,
try taking the picture a second time,
    and it usually does work.
  • Not Synced
I use that app almost on a daily basis.
  • Not Synced
One of the other big apps that I use
    when I am out traveling,
  • Not Synced
especially here in Marian, and I just
moved here a couple months ago.
  • Not Synced
I don't know Marion at all.
  • Not Synced
    So when the cab drivers
    are taking us places,
  • Not Synced
one of the apps that I love to use
    is nearby explore:
  • Not Synced
Nearby explorer allows you to hear
    what streets are coming up,
  • Not Synced
if the street is on your left
or your right, places of interest.
  • Not Synced
    You can even bus drivers
-- the drivers that you are in –
  • Not Synced
one of the things that you can
    get it to tell you
  • Not Synced
is the speed you are driving at.
  • Not Synced
You can also get it to tell you
when you are turning on a street
  • Not Synced
    what direction you are heading,
so you can learn the area
  • Not Synced
    just by using that.
  • Not Synced
You can start walking the area
    and using it as well.
  • Not Synced
    >> Nermin Selimic: Great, Jerry.
    Thanks a lot.
  • Not Synced
I believe when you and I were talking
    about the third-party applications,
  • Not Synced
I believe that you mentioned also
    the Get There app.
  • Not Synced
That can be also very helpful
    for the navigation.
  • Not Synced
    As far as I recall,
  • Not Synced
    you are a big fan
    of the third-party application
  • Not Synced
    that allows you to voice-control
    your camera.
  • Not Synced
    >> Jerry Jicha: Well, actually, it's not
    just the voice control part that I like;
  • Not Synced
it's the fact that the actual app
    is perfectly accessible.
  • Not Synced
    One of the drawbacks
    on the Moto Z Play
  • Not Synced
is the camera app that comes
with it by default is zero accessible.
  • Not Synced
However, if you download a program
    called Open Camera,
  • Not Synced
not only can you find the shutter button
and the zoom controls and everything else,
  • Not Synced
just about everything is accessible –
switching it from photo to video,
  • Not Synced
accessing the settings, which is huge,
  • Not Synced
being able to, as Nermin said,
saying the word "cheese," such as that,
  • Not Synced
    and you can have it
    take the picture automatically.
  • Not Synced
One of the other big programs that I
-- and I totally forget until just now –
  • Not Synced
    that I actually strongly suggest
    people get
  • Not Synced
    -- is KNFB Reader.
  • Not Synced
    This actually came in handy
    the other day
  • Not Synced
when I went to cook a lasagna
    in the oven.
  • Not Synced
    I didn't know the directions, and –
  • Not Synced
all I had to do was take a picture
out of the correct side of the box,
  • Not Synced
    and when it found text
that was readable, it read it.
  • Not Synced
So, you know, the O.C.R. capability
of KNFB Reader is really good.
  • Not Synced
I have actually used it when my computer
has all of a sudden stopped talking.
  • Not Synced
    I have used KNFB Reader,
have taken a picture of the screen
  • Not Synced
and tried to figure out what the error is.
  • Not Synced
And figure out what the error is.
  • Not Synced
You can even use it for that.
  • Not Synced
    >> Nermin Selimic: Great!
    Well, Jerry, thanks a lot.
  • Not Synced
    I think it was
    a very impressive presentation,
  • Not Synced
    and also confirmation
  • Not Synced
    how the Android accessibility features
    and options can be used.
  • Not Synced
    Again, thank you very much.
  • Not Synced
    We apologize
    for the small technical difficulty.
  • Not Synced
    So our original idea was
    that you would be able
  • Not Synced
    to see literally Jerry's smartphone.
  • Not Synced
    That didn't happen.
  • Not Synced
But I was trying to “shadow”
    Jerry as good as possible,
  • Not Synced
    so I was emulating
  • Not Synced
    whatever he was performing
    on his smartphone.
  • Not Synced
I must admit Jerry was sometimes
    moving much faster using TalkBack
  • Not Synced
than I did, looking at the display.
  • Not Synced
But I think it was still an experience
    that was representative
  • Not Synced
    for the use of TalkBack.
  • Not Synced
So there are two additional features
  • Not Synced
when we are talking about Android
    and third-party accessibility
  • Not Synced
that I would like Robert to talk about,
and one of them is actually Braille.
  • Not Synced
And the other one is the newest
    Android accessibility feature,
  • Not Synced
    Select to Speak.
  • Not Synced
    >> Robert Felgar: Just a quick word
    about Braille.
  • Not Synced
An Android device can be used
    with a Braille display.
  • Not Synced
It is used with an app called BrailleBack
which has been around a number of years.
  • Not Synced
We won't be demonstrating it but,
    like I said,
  • Not Synced
it's been around for a long time.
  • Not Synced
One of the new test accessibility features
that was added in TalkBack 5.2.0,
  • Not Synced
which was just released this past week,
is an option called Select to Speak.
  • Not Synced
Select to Speak is a great function
    for people with low vision.
  • Not Synced
    Select to Speak.
  • Not Synced
So say the user wants to use
    their limited vision to call,
  • Not Synced
    it works for that purpose.
  • Not Synced
    Their eyes work sufficiently
    for that purpose.
  • Not Synced
But let's say they can't read
a news article or e-mail with small fonts.
  • Not Synced
They can simply press a little button
    that appears
  • Not Synced
in the right bottom edge of the screen
and then pass the part of the screen
  • Not Synced
    that they want spoken,
and then the device will start speaking.
  • Not Synced
So I will just show you on the screen
    how that works.
  • Not Synced
Let's first go to CNN as an example.
  • Not Synced
So we have pulled up CNN.
  • Not Synced
Let's say we want the device
    to read the article.
  • Not Synced
Simply press the button on the right:
    >> VOICE: Dallas firefighter shot,
    authorities say.
  • Not Synced
    >> Robert Felgar: So there you go.
  • Not Synced
That's how you can get the device
on any portion of the screen
  • Not Synced
    that the user cannot see.
  • Not Synced
It is a good option for people
    with low vision
  • Not Synced
    or with any print disability.
  • Not Synced
    >> Nermin Selimic: What about Braille
    and Braille possibility?
  • Not Synced
    >> Robert Felgar: That's what I mentioned,
there is an app for that called BrailleBack.
  • Not Synced
    >> Nermin Selimic: Very good.
  • Not Synced
So the next part of our Webinar
    is dedicated to accessibility option
  • Not Synced
    for low vision users.
  • Not Synced
But before we move to that part
    of the Webinar,
  • Not Synced
    clearly the accessibility for people
    who are blind,
  • Not Synced
it is a very significant topic,
  • Not Synced
and I think we went through
    so many options.
  • Not Synced
So at this time I would like
    to open the floor,
  • Not Synced
if there are any questions, before we move
on to the next item on the agenda.
  • Not Synced
So please feel free to ask questions
and don't forget to unmute yourself.
  • Not Synced
    (Pause).
  • Not Synced
It appears there are no questions
    at this time.
  • Not Synced
So we will move to the next section,
  • Not Synced
    but please keep in mind
that we will have at the end,
  • Not Synced
as I said before, an opportunity for you
    to ask questions,
  • Not Synced
in case you have some questions by then,
to make sure that there is an opportunity
  • Not Synced
    for you to ask questions
  • Not Synced
    and also an opportunity
for such questions to be answered.
  • Not Synced
So we will be moving to the next part,
  • Not Synced
    which is the accessibility
    for low-vision users.
  • Not Synced
Before I will just read along here
    to complete.
  • Not Synced
As previously, you will be able to see
    the screen of the smartphone
  • Not Synced
    that I will be utilizing.
  • Not Synced
Okay. So if you are talking about
    the accessibility feature
  • Not Synced
    for low-vision users, clearly,
whatever we have seen so far,
  • Not Synced
    what was presented by Jerry,
  • Not Synced
that is obviously a great option
    for many low-vision users.
  • Not Synced
However, you know, on the other hand,
    there are many low-vision users
  • Not Synced
who have no need to use TalkBack
    all the time,
  • Not Synced
but it was a good solution for them as well. So the Select to Speak that
  • Not Synced
    Robert showed just minutes ago,
  • Not Synced
I think that is a great addition
to the accessibility features on Android.
  • Not Synced
    For a low-vision user
    who can easily navigate
  • Not Synced
either to place a phone call,
to open the dial pad and things like that,
  • Not Synced
    they might be struggling
  • Not Synced
    if they are reading something
that is smaller on the display,
  • Not Synced
and in that case, they can easily
keep the select to talk activated
  • Not Synced
all the time and it is available to them,
as you can see here, in the corner.
  • Not Synced
    Correct?
  • Not Synced
So I will press this now,
and I will capture the mail app,
  • Not Synced
and I will try to demo this one more time,
so hopefully you can hear it.
  • Not Synced
    >> VOICE: E-mail.
  • Not Synced
    >> Nermin Selimic: And very, very –
a tool that is very easy to access
  • Not Synced
    at any time.
  • Not Synced
So in addition to that, there are many,
    many other built-in options
  • Not Synced
    for low-vision users.
  • Not Synced
As always, they can be accessed
    through settings,
  • Not Synced
and then moving down to accessibility.
  • Not Synced
So some of the most interesting ones
    would be,
  • Not Synced
that I would like to mention here,
    is the magnification gesture.
  • Not Synced
So in this case, it is over the switched on.
  • Not Synced
    So what happens is,
  • Not Synced
basically I will go back now
    to the home screen.
  • Not Synced
If I triple tap, you will see that anything
that is on the display or screen
  • Not Synced
    will be increased.
  • Not Synced
    And then, again, triple tapping
    will deactivate it.
  • Not Synced
I have heard feedback from some users
that if they are typing something
  • Not Synced
    very quickly or deleting something
and they hit the delete button
  • Not Synced
    three times very quickly
  • Not Synced
    it will actually activate
    the magnification gesture
  • Not Synced
    so that is something people
    should be aware of
  • Not Synced
    when they are using it.
  • Not Synced
So it is just a nice feature,
    although I must admit,
  • Not Synced
    if someone is using that
in order to read an optical, let's say,
  • Not Synced
on Chrome or something like that,
    it has a significant disadvantage;
  • Not Synced
it will increase the text that is there.
  • Not Synced
But it will be running out of space
  • Not Synced
    so maybe you will start
scrolling to the left or right
  • Not Synced
    in order to read that.
  • Not Synced
But I think it is very, very helpful option.
  • Not Synced
    Going back into accessibility
and all the different options that we have,
  • Not Synced
we have also the font size
    that can be adjusted, correct?
  • Not Synced
So the current setting on this device
    is default.
  • Not Synced
I will start changing this now to large,
    and you can see already
  • Not Synced
in the upper part on the screen,
    what is the change
  • Not Synced
and what is the increase in font
  • Not Synced
    that such change in settings
    would result in.
  • Not Synced
    So very helpful.
  • Not Synced
Again, it is helpful for low-vision users
but only to a certain extent.
  • Not Synced
    Additionally, there are options also
    to manage the display size,
  • Not Synced
so how things are being displayed,
  • Not Synced
in particular if we are talking about
the call wall, text messages, so on.
  • Not Synced
As you can see here, this is currently on default. I will change that to large, and, you know, it is also changing. It is very helpful.
  • Not Synced
    >> Robert Felgar: One point difference
between the display size and font size,
  • Not Synced
    the display size,
not only is the text enlarged,
  • Not Synced
but all other aspects of the font
    are enlarged –
  • Not Synced
    so the notification, applications,
    not just the text,
  • Not Synced
as is the case with font size.
  • Not Synced
    >> Nermin Selimic: Okay.
  • Not Synced
    The additional option
    also for low-vision users
  • Not Synced
    is the text-to-speech output.
  • Not Synced
You know, we have seen that,
    and it's not only navigate
  • Not Synced
the home screen or just the settings
but also to receive text messages
  • Not Synced
or e-mails and so on and so on.
  • Not Synced
    Additional option is also
    the color inversion.
  • Not Synced
    This one, unfortunately,
when I'm sharing my smartphone screen,
  • Not Synced
this one is not being transmitted
    using the sharing technology.
  • Not Synced
    But basically, what happens,
    everything is inverted
  • Not Synced
    so whatever was white,
    the background becomes black.
  • Not Synced
    >> Robert Felgar: Instead of
black on white, it is white on black.
  • Not Synced
    >> Nermin Selimic: Exactly.
  • Not Synced
And there are many options also
    for the color correction.
  • Not Synced
It can be activated, and there are
    different corrections and modes.
  • Not Synced
    There is the red-green, blue-yellow,
    so on, so on,
  • Not Synced
depending on the challenges the user
    is facing and also
  • Not Synced
the type of the vision impairment,
    that can be adjusted.
  • Not Synced
    When talking about low-vision users,
the very interesting part is actually
  • Not Synced
    -- and I just realized I had
the color correction on. I apologize.
  • Not Synced
    I will switch that off
  • Not Synced
-- there are very, very powerful
    third-party applications.
  • Not Synced
    There is one third-party application
    in particular
  • Not Synced
    that I wanted to share
    with everyone today.
  • Not Synced
And something that is very specific
    about the application,
  • Not Synced
    the application called Claria Zoom.
  • Not Synced
    Actually very specific.
  • Not Synced
    The application is free.
  • Not Synced
It only exists on the Android.
  • Not Synced
If you recall, I did mention
at the beginning of this session
  • Not Synced
that Android is an open source
    operating system,
  • Not Synced
    so Android does allow developers,
    application developers,
  • Not Synced
    as well as hardware manufacturers,
  • Not Synced
    to have more access
  • Not Synced
to the operating system and to customize
    it a little bit more,
  • Not Synced
    and the Claria Zoom developers
    clearly utilized that option,
  • Not Synced
    that benefit
  • Not Synced
and they have come up with the
Claria Zoom solution for low vision users.
  • Not Synced
So rather than continue to talk
    about Claria Zoom
  • Not Synced
I will show you a couple of things
    about Claria Zoom
  • Not Synced
which I believe are very, very illustrative
of the power of Claria Zoom
  • Not Synced
and the benefits it generates for low vision users.
  • Not Synced
So Claria Zoom can be used in order
to create an additional home page.
  • Not Synced
    And in this case,
we have adjusted the size of the icons
  • Not Synced
    on the home screen
    for the most relevant icons.
  • Not Synced
    So you can see literally
    that the whole home screen
  • Not Synced
on this large 5.5 inch display
was utilized to show only four icons.
  • Not Synced
We have seen in many cases
  • Not Synced
    that the users
    with significantly impaired vision
  • Not Synced
were able to continue to use
    the smartphone
  • Not Synced
    exactly because of this solution.
  • Not Synced
    >> Robert Felgar: And to be clear,
    you can actually customize
  • Not Synced
    the number of icons
    that appear on your screen.
  • Not Synced
So if you didn't want four –
  • Not Synced
    you wanted ten
    or something of that nature,
  • Not Synced
you can do that as well.
  • Not Synced
    >> Nermin Selimic: Yes, and you can
    select the ones you want.
  • Not Synced
    >> Robert Felgar: Yes.
  • Not Synced
    >> Nermin Selimic: In addition to that,
    as we had seen also
  • Not Synced
    for the built-in feature,
  • Not Synced
Claria can also support color inversion
    as well as color correction.
  • Not Synced
The approach is exactly the same,
    only that in this case,
  • Not Synced
it deals with the larger magnification
but that can be supported as well.
  • Not Synced
I think what is also very, very interesting
in the case of Claria, typically,
  • Not Synced
    the built-in accessibility features,
on Android as well as on Apple,
  • Not Synced
they do provide if somebody is typing
a text message, for the keyboard,
  • Not Synced
the key pad, as well as the text message,
  • Not Synced
    they will be only increased
    to a certain extent.
  • Not Synced
But not really as much as is needed
    for low vision user.
  • Not Synced
So in the case of Claria,
    that's actually quite different,
  • Not Synced
and I will try to show that here.
  • Not Synced
So as you can see, correct,
the key pad is really very, very big.
  • Not Synced
    Correct?
  • Not Synced
And then, even when you are typing
    a text message,
  • Not Synced
it is very easy to use that.
  • Not Synced
Additional options that are built in,
you can see here the blue button?
  • Not Synced
    That is actually speech-to-text,
  • Not Synced
so a text message or e-mail
    can be dictated as well.
  • Not Synced
An additional option that is very,
    very exciting here
  • Not Synced
is the ability for users to have
    easy access to certain content
  • Not Synced
    on certain websites.
  • Not Synced
It's good to know based on
    the magnification gesture
  • Not Synced
you are increasing the display sizes
  • Not Synced
    -- (voice interruption) –
  • Not Synced
    it is increasing,
but it is running out of space.
  • Not Synced
    It is impossible to see.
  • Not Synced
So the benefits that are available
    to Claria is actually
  • Not Synced
that it will pick up the content,
  • Not Synced
    and then process it.
    >> VOICE: New text found
    at that location --
  • Not Synced
    >> Nermin Selimic: So in this case,
    I'm using the Claria browser,
  • Not Synced
in order to access a website.
  • Not Synced
So just like any other regular browser.
  • Not Synced
But then it has the ability to process
    the content from that website
  • Not Synced
and present it as a pure text file
where the font is significantly increased,
  • Not Synced
and it's not running out of the display,
but rather, it was simply on the screen
  • Not Synced
    and users can process it.
  • Not Synced
That was a video, so I am trying to.
    -- trying to …
  • Not Synced
as you can see here, so we have
    a specific article.
  • Not Synced
And now, that can be converted.
  • Not Synced
And you can see here how large it is
  • Not Synced
    and there is nothing
that is running out of the display,
  • Not Synced
and the user can continue to scroll down
    very conveniently.
  • Not Synced
And all of this, the extracted text,
can be also increased even further,
  • Not Synced
and on top of that, all the color inversion
    and color correction
  • Not Synced
can be applied to it as well.
  • Not Synced
So I think that was really
    a very significant benefit.
  • Not Synced
    >> Robert Felgar: You can change
    the colors
  • Not Synced
by simply tapping on the screen
    with three fingers.
You can see how that works.
  • Not Synced
    >> Nermin Selimic: Excellent.
  • Not Synced
    So Claria Zoom has many,
    many other options
  • Not Synced
as you can see here on the top.
  • Not Synced
There is also the pull-down display
    for the other options
  • Not Synced
and you can see how big that appears.
  • Not Synced
    I wanted to provide you
    with some initial experience
  • Not Synced
into Claria's zoom and how it can help
    a low vision user.
  • Not Synced
    So other great applications
    that we have seen
  • Not Synced
    and received great feedback
    from low vision users
  • Not Synced
    are applications such as the
    Dragon Mobile Assistant
  • Not Synced
    for voice command.
  • Not Synced
It works very well and is very popular.
  • Not Synced
There is also the IDEAL magnifier
    that can be used literally for anything;
  • Not Synced
    correct?
  • Not Synced
We have the phone built-in camera
    that is actually picking up
  • Not Synced
whatever the user would like to see.
  • Not Synced
Magnified is a part of the --
  • Not Synced
    I don't know, from a magazine
    or something like that,
  • Not Synced
or some instructions on a product
or a packaging, and so on.
  • Not Synced
    Moving to great applications
    such as the Giganticon,
  • Not Synced
that one is actually very interesting.
  • Not Synced
It is somehow like only one part
    of Claria Zoom,
  • Not Synced
so the only thing, in quotes,
that it does is actually, all the –
  • Not Synced
    all the application icons
that we have seen are here
  • Not Synced
    on the home screen.
  • Not Synced
Selected icons can then be included
    into Giganticon will show up
  • Not Synced
on the screen making it much easier
    for users to navigate.
  • Not Synced
I am trying to accelerate the pace
    in order to make sure
  • Not Synced
    we have enough time
    for the remaining sections
  • Not Synced
and also for questions and answers.
  • Not Synced
    But I believe between Jerry's
    very detailed presentation of Talkback,
  • Not Synced
and some of the specific options
    for low vision users,
  • Not Synced
I think the overall accessibility for users
who are blind or low vision
  • Not Synced
    is very, very helpful.
  • Not Synced
So moving to the next part
  • Not Synced
    is the accessibility
for Deaf and hard of hearing users.
  • Not Synced
    There are multiple built-in options
    such as captions.
  • Not Synced
We see text messages are very popular
    among users.
  • Not Synced
    There are options for users
who are deaf in one ear,
  • Not Synced
so there is an adjustment for the audio
  • Not Synced
    so that purely mono audio
    is being streamed.
  • Not Synced
And then also, when you are talking
    about notifications
  • Not Synced
    there are great notifications
  • Not Synced
    that can be utilized
    as pop-up notifications
  • Not Synced
and there is incoming e-mail or
    text messages notifications
  • Not Synced
    as well as vibration.
  • Not Synced
So when you are talking about captions,
  • Not Synced
I think that it is something that is
    very easy to show here.
  • Not Synced
    And you can see here,
it can be accessed as always.
  • Not Synced
    And you have multiple options
    to adjust the language settings
  • Not Synced
as well as the text size.
  • Not Synced
Currently the text size is very large.
  • Not Synced
And the text size can be changed
    to normal.
  • Not Synced
And you can see it is
    significantly smaller,
  • Not Synced
so it does show right away
what the text size will be
  • Not Synced
as well as the caption style.
  • Not Synced
So many options that are available
    on the captions.
  • Not Synced
    Mono audio I mentioned.
  • Not Synced
That is also very, very helpful.
  • Not Synced
    Then we are looking into
  • Not Synced
    a significant selection
    of third-party applications
  • Not Synced
    such as closed-caption players.
  • Not Synced
The Pro Deaf translator is really a very,
    very interesting application
  • Not Synced
that can help individuals who are deaf
    for an in-person communication
  • Not Synced
if they are trying to communicate
to someone who doesn't know ASL.
  • Not Synced
I hope it will work now here
    with screen sharing.
  • Not Synced
But this is actually very, very nice.
  • Not Synced
So basically users can type in
    a certain word,
  • Not Synced
and the solution will convert that
    into ASL.
  • Not Synced
    >> Robert Felgar: Cool.
  • Not Synced
    >> Nermin Selimic: So it just illustrates
how many options are out there,
  • Not Synced
that there are many, many developers
who are trying to come up
  • Not Synced
    with some great solutions.
  • Not Synced
Now, I think what is most relevant
  • Not Synced
    for individuals who are deaf
    or hard-of-hearing,
  • Not Synced
if we are talking about smartphones
    and tablets
  • Not Synced
and if we are talking about
    communication,
  • Not Synced
that is all the tools that are available
    related to relay services.
  • Not Synced
So if you are talking about
    Hamilton CapTel, solutions like that,
  • Not Synced
    or clear caption,
  • Not Synced
    those will work very well
    on Android devices.
  • Not Synced
And I think, Robert, you wanted
    to mention something
  • Not Synced
    that is also new applications
    on the development?
  • Not Synced
    >> Robert Felgar: Yes.
  • Not Synced
    There's a couple of exciting
    new applications
  • Not Synced
    that are being developed
    that aren't quite available yet
  • Not Synced
    but are worth mentioning
and teasing a little bit about.
  • Not Synced
First of all, there's an application
    available
  • Not Synced
-- or that will be available soon –
  • Not Synced
    that will allow the user
    of an Android phone –
  • Not Synced
it won't be available at least initially
    on iPhone -
  • Not Synced
it will allow the person to take
    an audiogram with their device
  • Not Synced
and then all the output that comes
from the device will be adjusted,
  • Not Synced
so the pitch will be adjusted
    based on the audiogram.
  • Not Synced
So basically the phone will be acting
to a significant extent like a hearing aid.
  • Not Synced
So when a person speaks on the phone,
    they won't be hearing that normal tone;
  • Not Synced
the pitch and so forth will be adjusted
    based on that audiogram.
  • Not Synced
So in a sense, the need for hearing aids
when people speak on the phone
  • Not Synced
    will be significantly reduced.
  • Not Synced
And we are expecting that to come out
    within the next two months,
  • Not Synced
    which is really, really exciting.
  • Not Synced
Another app that is being developed,
and we just tested it the other day,
  • Not Synced
    is a service that captions
    ongoing phone calls.
  • Not Synced
So the calling party and the called party,
  • Not Synced
if they have this app on their device,
  • Not Synced
    whatever either party says
    will be transcribed visibly
  • Not Synced
on the device using the regular dialer,
    without a communications assistant.
  • Not Synced
So basically they will be using
    speech-to-text.
  • Not Synced
The speech-to-text engine of Google –
    to provide the transcription,
  • Not Synced
instead of the CA in the middle.
  • Not Synced
And we actually tested this this last week
    and it works amazingly well.
  • Not Synced
And like I said, one of the amazing things
    about it,
  • Not Synced
if you simply use your regular dialer,
    you don't need to download
  • Not Synced
    any sort of fancy app
    or anything like that.
  • Not Synced
These are things which are coming,
both of which will be unique to Android.
  • Not Synced
    >> Nermin Selimic: Thank you, Robert.
  • Not Synced
    There is one more application
    that is very, very interesting.
  • Not Synced
I found this very, very helpful.
  • Not Synced
    This is actually the application
    called TextHear,
which is an application that provides
    speech-to-text transcription.
  • Not Synced
Text Hear. It can be installed
    on any Android device,
  • Not Synced
and it will actually be providing
    a live text-to-speech transcription.
  • Not Synced
    So it works very well.
  • Not Synced
The device needs to be online
so that it can be supported.
  • Not Synced
As mentioned, I have used it
    on multiple occasions
  • Not Synced
when there was no interpreter available,
and it did work very well.
  • Not Synced
    >> Robert Felgar: And one last point
    about 3rd party apps.
  • Not Synced
All the major VRS and caption apps
    that are available for iOS
  • Not Synced
    are also available for Android,
  • Not Synced
so all the large VRS companies
like Sorenson and Purple and so on,
  • Not Synced
    they both have both Android
    and iOS applications.
  • Not Synced
    >> Nermin Selimic: So we were talking
  • Not Synced
    so much about
    different 3rd party applications,
  • Not Synced
and there are literally tens of thousands
    of accessibility applications out there.
  • Not Synced
    Many are truly exceptional,
    they work very well.
  • Not Synced
    Others are rather disappointing;
  • Not Synced
    they don't work at all
or they are not reliable, so on.
  • Not Synced
So here at RAZ Mobility in order to make
    things easier for consumers,
  • Not Synced
    we did initiate an effort
  • Not Synced
    that resulted in the RAZ
    Mobility application installer app.
  • Not Synced
Can you share, Robert, some info
    about RAZ Mobility's application?
  • Not Synced
    >> Robert Felgar: Yes.
  • Not Synced
    The application is essentially
    a list and description
  • Not Synced
of all the applications that we felt
  • Not Synced
    were helpful to people
    with various types of disabilities.
  • Not Synced
So we just turned on the application.
  • Not Synced
You can see that there are
a number of categories such as
  • Not Synced
    hearing, vision, speech and cognition.
  • Not Synced
    And let's say you have a –
you are hard of hearing or you are deaf.
  • Not Synced
You click or tap on the hearing category,
    and then you can see
  • Not Synced
a number of the suggested applications
  • Not Synced
    for people that are
    hard of hearing or deaf.
  • Not Synced
And we've gone through all of those
  • Not Synced
and kind of separated the wheat
from the chaff, if you know what I mean,
and tested the ones we think
    are really good
  • Not Synced
and gotten rid of those apps that
we did not think are actually helpful.
  • Not Synced
Then you can see with vision,
  • Not Synced
there's a similar list of applications
    that we recommend.
  • Not Synced
And then, if you tap on
    one of these applications,
    let's say Braille --
  • Not Synced
    >> Nermin Selimic: That has
    to be installed.
  • Not Synced
That one has not been installed.
  • Not Synced
    >> Robert Felgar: Okay. I will tap on
    Giganticon –
  • Not Synced
it takes you to the Play Store
where the app can be downloaded
  • Not Synced
and the app will be installed.
  • Not Synced
It is available on the Google Play Store.
  • Not Synced
You can download it or try it simply
by typing in RAZ Mobility, and it's free.
  • Not Synced
    >> Nermin Selimic: So it's on Google Play,
  • Not Synced
just to search for RAZ Mobility
on Google Play and it will show up.
  • Not Synced
So it provides a great selection,
    as mentioned,
  • Not Synced
and it makes the installation very easy.
  • Not Synced
If users have the RAZ Mobility app,
open the app, select the category,
  • Not Synced
find one of the recommended apps,
  • Not Synced
and the next step is just to install
the app, and they are actually done.
  • Not Synced
    And we are also updating
    the list of applications,
  • Not Synced
    adding some new applications.
  • Not Synced
We have seen in some cases,
    in some applications we have,
  • Not Synced
    because they stopped performing
as well as they did in the past.
  • Not Synced
But we are adding more applications.
  • Not Synced
    Also a disclaimer.
  • Not Synced
    Most of the applications
    that we have selected
  • Not Synced
    in the RAZ Mobility store
    are free applications.
  • Not Synced
    There are some applications
    that do require a payment.
  • Not Synced
And we did label such applications
    accordingly.
  • Not Synced
    So just before we move
to the Q&A part of our Webinar today,
  • Not Synced
    Robert, any closing remarks
    related to Android methods
  • Not Synced
that you would like to provide?
  • Not Synced
    >> Robert Felgar: I just want to say
    that Android accessibility
  • Not Synced
has really come a long way
    over the years.
  • Not Synced
There was a perception for a long time
    that Android was behind iOS,
  • Not Synced
    and TalkBack wasn't as good
    as Voiceover.
  • Not Synced
But I think you see –
    saw from Jerry's presentation
  • Not Synced
that you can do pretty much everything
    on Android using TalkBack
  • Not Synced
as you can with Voiceover in the iOS
  • Not Synced
    and they are really quick
    and comparable in many respects.
  • Not Synced
Furthermore there is a Google team
that is working on TalkBack constantly.
  • Not Synced
Like I said, the next version, 5.2.0,
    came out last week,
  • Not Synced
and I am sure they already started
    working on the next version.
  • Not Synced
So for six months or so
  • Not Synced
    there are important updates
    or improvements
  • Not Synced
    so we are expecting
    continued improvements,
  • Not Synced
    and Google is constantly investing
    in new accessibility features
  • Not Synced
    with each release.
  • Not Synced
    >> Nermin Selimic: Thanks, Robert.
  • Not Synced
So we are moving now to
    questions and answers.
  • Not Synced
    Please feel free to ask
    any type of questions.
  • Not Synced
    In case there are questions
    that we cannot answer immediately,
  • Not Synced
we will be more than glad to follow up
  • Not Synced
with you and either reach out to you
    or provide answers via e-mail.
  • Not Synced
    I know that some questions
were coming into the chat option
    in the conferencing tool.
  • Not Synced
So I don't have access to all of them
    at this time.
  • Not Synced
It's just a little bit challenging
    to formulate all of that.
  • Not Synced
So please feel free to ask
    such questions now.
  • Not Synced
    So hit the mute button
    and unmute yourself,
or we will be following up with you
    by e-mail
  • Not Synced
and answer all of your questions.
  • Not Synced
    >> Hi, this is Sarah from
    the Minnesota TED program.
  • Not Synced
    I have a question.
    >> Sure, Sarah.
  • Not Synced
    >> I was just wondering,
    you guys have the
  • Not Synced
-- let's see here -- you called it
    the RAZ Mobility installer app,
  • Not Synced
    or installer.
  • Not Synced
    How do you determine
    if a specific accessible app
  • Not Synced
is good for that person with disability?
  • Not Synced
Do you have people with disabilities
    test the devices?
  • Not Synced
    Like what is your criteria?
  • Not Synced
    >> Nermin Selimic: So, here is
    the following process, Sarah,
  • Not Synced
    that we have.
  • Not Synced
    Yes, people with disabilities,
it is relevant, and they do ask –
  • Not Synced
we do ask people in focus groups
    to provide feedback.
  • Not Synced
We also ask does it work,
and is it relevant and helpful for them?
  • Not Synced
    Even before that,
and what we have seen is necessary,
  • Not Synced
is to test apps for their functionality
    and reliability.
  • Not Synced
    There have been certain apps
    which really have some issues.
  • Not Synced
I would say the concept is great.
    They can be very helpful.
  • Not Synced
But, you know, in real life, they don't –
    they simply don't perform,
  • Not Synced
    from a technical standpoint.
  • Not Synced
    Their reliability is not there,
or their performance is a little bit –
  • Not Synced
    it works on Mondays
    but not on Tuesdays,
  • Not Synced
    for whatever reason.
  • Not Synced
So these are the two most important
    avenues that we look at
  • Not Synced
when we are trying to come up
    with the recommendation.
  • Not Synced
    >> Robert Felgar: Also, Sarah,
and there is a flexibility app.
  • Not Synced
    Let's say for your program
  • Not Synced
    you want add different app
    to be installed
  • Not Synced
    or an additional app
  • Not Synced
and we have the flexibility to do that
    for individual programs.
  • Not Synced
    >> Sarah: Okay. Thank you.
  • Not Synced
    >> Nermin Selimic: I think there was
a question here asked in the chat room.
  • Not Synced
    What about features for people
    with learning disabilities?
  • Not Synced
    That is an excellent question.
  • Not Synced
Yes, there are features and especially
    there are 3rd party applications
  • Not Synced
    for people with specific
    cognitive disabilities.
  • Not Synced
And if you take a look
at the RAZ Mobility installer application,
  • Not Synced
you can see here that our category
    does exist for cognition,
  • Not Synced
    and its application such as
the autism express or ACSE for autism
  • Not Synced
so there are applications for people
    with learning disabilities as well.
  • Not Synced
    (Pause).
  • Not Synced
    >> Sorry. It's Sally.
  • Not Synced
With iOS, they have the rotor capability
  • Not Synced
where if you are surfing the web,
    for example,
  • Not Synced
    you can select
    what your swipes would do.
  • Not Synced
For example, going by heading or link.
  • Not Synced
Does the feature exist with TalkBack?
  • Not Synced
    >> Nermin Selimic: Let's see if we still
    have Jerry on the phone,
  • Not Synced
I think if he is, he is the best person
    to answer that question.
  • Not Synced
Jerry, are you still on the call?
  • Not Synced
    >> Robert Felgar: Okay, looks like
    he's not there.
  • Not Synced
But I am virtually positive –
    although I am not --
  • Not Synced
    >> Jerry Jicha: I am here.
  • Not Synced
    >> Robert Felgar: Oh, you are, Jerry.
Could you answer that question, please?
  • Not Synced
    >> Jerry Jicha: In my case, yes,
    there actually is a gesture
  • Not Synced
that will do things like paragraph,
    line, character.
  • Not Synced
And when you are in the web browser,
it will do things like heading.
  • Not Synced
And all you have to do to that gesture
is -- give me one moment here –
  • Not Synced
you just do like a swipe down.
    >> VOICE: Words, line. Paragraph.
    Default.
  • Not Synced
    >> Jerry Jicha: See? So default is
    the default action.
  • Not Synced
But let's say I were to highlight
an item -- real quick -- work me MDM.
  • Not Synced
    >> VOICE: Actions reduced, characters.
  • Not Synced
    >> Jerry Jicha: So if I swiped it
    right right now --
  • Not Synced
    >> VOICE: W O R K –
  • Not Synced
    >> Jerry Jicha: As you see,
  • Not Synced
    it will actually read it
    character by character,
  • Not Synced
because I changed what the swipe does.
  • Not Synced
I hope that answers that question.
  • Not Synced
    >> It does. Thank you.
  • Not Synced
    >> Robert Felgar: It's not rotor, is it?
  • Not Synced
    >> Jerry Jicha: It is a rotor in the sense
that when you do a down gesture –
  • Not Synced
    because the up gesture does
    the opposite way –
  • Not Synced
then you go through a list of options.
  • Not Synced
Then you check the one you want.
  • Not Synced
So it is a rotor sort of,
  • Not Synced
but you don't have to like
turn your fingers on the screen
    to access it.
  • Not Synced
You can just do like a swipe up
    or a swipe down.
  • Not Synced
As you saw me do earlier –
maybe you saw it -- I was flipping down. And if I flick up --
  • Not Synced
    >> VOICE: Paragraph right word
    paragraph
  • Not Synced
    >> Jerry Jicha: See, it is actually going
    backwards through the list,
  • Not Synced
so it is actually a rotor in that sense.
  • Not Synced
    >> Robert Felgar: Thank you, Jerry.
  • Not Synced
    >> Jerry Jicha: And Sally, if you like,
  • Not Synced
    we can summarize and provide
    the exact response via e-mail.
  • Not Synced
    >> Sally: Thank you very much.
  • Not Synced
    >> Nermin Selimic: Are there
any other questions at this time?
  • Not Synced
    >> What about specifically
    for deaf-blind?
  • Not Synced
    Are there -- sorry.
  • Not Synced
Do you have things that are specifically
    for deaf-blind?
  • Not Synced
    >> Robert Felgar: Well, we don't have
    any applications
  • Not Synced
    that are specifically for deaf-blind.
  • Not Synced
They are either for one or the other.
  • Not Synced
    You know, obviously Braille,
a Braille display can be used
  • Not Synced
    by individuals who are deaf-blind
    and you've got BrailleBack.
  • Not Synced
But we don't have anything that is
unique that is intended for both,
  • Not Synced
that I am aware of, on Android.
  • Not Synced
    >> Nermin Selimic: And I assume
you are referring to a scenario of –
  • Not Synced
yes, I think your answer is all right.
  • Not Synced
There is nothing that has been
    developed specifically for the deaf-blind
  • Not Synced
    other than the BrailleBack.
  • Not Synced
    >> Robert Felgar:Right.
  • Not Synced
    >> And what about answering
    telephones,
  • Not Synced
if you have a physical disability
    where you can't actually –
  • Not Synced
you know, somebody who has –
    is a quadriplegic.
  • Not Synced
How could they answer a phone call?
  • Not Synced
    >> Nermin Selimic: Excellent question.
  • Not Synced
    Today we were focused around
    vision and hearing
  • Not Synced
    as the backdrop of disability.
  • Not Synced
    There are additional products
    offered by RAZ Mobility.
  • Not Synced
    In particular, I would mention
    two other types of disabilities.
  • Not Synced
    There's actually speech impairment
  • Not Synced
    and also individuals
    with mobility disabilities.
  • Not Synced
And going back to your question,
there is a solution that we are offering
  • Not Synced
    which is called Sesame solution.
  • Not Synced
That provides the opportunity to people
who cannot control their hands for,
  • Not Synced
    you know, typical reasons
    we have seen,
  • Not Synced
    like connected with the service,
the VA, in the area of amputees,
  • Not Synced
    for instance; amputees, so on,
    returning from the Armed Services.
  • Not Synced
So controlling any smartphone or tablet,
    any Android smartphone or tablet,
  • Not Synced
    they can control them
    either by their head movement
  • Not Synced
    or through an extended range
    of voice commands.
  • Not Synced
    So they can easily answer
an incoming call by simply saying
  • Not Synced
    "Sesame, answer the call."
    Or "End call."
  • Not Synced
    They can open up applications,
    they can type text messages,
  • Not Synced
by using this specific solution that
consists of an Android mobile device,
  • Not Synced
    a selected Android mobile device,
  • Not Synced
    and special software
    that is installed on it.
  • Not Synced
    No other equipment is needed
  • Not Synced
and it actually uses the device
    that is built in camera
  • Not Synced
in order to track the user's
    head movement.
  • Not Synced
    And it worked very well
    even in scenarios
  • Not Synced
    where users had limited
    head movement.
  • Not Synced
    >> Robert Felgar: And that's
an example of a solution, again,
  • Not Synced
    that is only available
    on the Android platform.
  • Not Synced
It can't be built for iOS.
  • Not Synced
    >> Nermin Selimic: Does that
    answer your question?
  • Not Synced
    >> Yes. Thank you very much.
  • Not Synced
    >> Robert Felgar: Any other questions?
  • Not Synced
    >> Nermin Selimic: Please feel free
    at any time
  • Not Synced
to reach out to RAZ Mobility.
  • Not Synced
You can reach out through our –
  • Not Synced
    many of you have Robert's
    or my contact.
  • Not Synced
Now you can reach out to us also
    info@RAZmobility.com.
  • Not Synced
So please feel free to reach out to us
    for additional questions via e-mail
  • Not Synced
or just give us a call at any time.
  • Not Synced
We would be more than glad to answer
    any additional questions.
  • Not Synced
    >> May I make a real quick comment?
  • Not Synced
    >> Nermin Selimic: Yes, please.
  • Not Synced
    >> Jerry Jicha: It's Jerry.
  • Not Synced
One thing also, because I know
    someone had asked something
  • Not Synced
    a while back
and I couldn't say anything at the time.
  • Not Synced
They had asked, let's just use blind,
    for example,
  • Not Synced
do blind people test the apps
    that are for blind people?
  • Not Synced
I think Robert can even tell you,
Nermin is still getting used to me,
  • Not Synced
but Robert can definitely tell you,
  • Not Synced
    there have been several times
where I have gotten ahold of him
  • Not Synced
because I am actually totally blind,
    I have no sight whatsoever,
  • Not Synced
and if an app comes out,
either he'll tell me to test it
  • Not Synced
or I have gotten ahold of him to say
hey, Robert, this app is junk,
  • Not Synced
or hey, Robert, this app is cool,
it's something we should look into.
  • Not Synced
But to kind of help put
some people's minds at ease, yes
  • Not Synced
People like me do test apps to see,
  • Not Synced
do they work, do they do the job
    they are supposed to do?
  • Not Synced
And is it easy to use?
  • Not Synced
    >> Robert Felgar: Yes. Thank you, Jerry,
and also, as Jerry can say,
  • Not Synced
if you want to look up a particular app
    and its accessibility,
  • Not Synced
a great place for people who are blind
    is the eyes-free Google group
  • Not Synced
which has a huge number of users
  • Not Synced
    and there is constant conversation
about the best apps and alternatives
  • Not Synced
    and so forth.
  • Not Synced
So that is a great avenue to learn
    about accessible apps.
  • Not Synced
    >> Nermin Selimic: So we are now
    at 3:01 p.m. Eastern.
  • Not Synced
We did exhaust the full 120 minutes.
  • Not Synced
I was hoping that we would be able
to complete it in 90 minutes.
  • Not Synced
It was a very lengthy session.
  • Not Synced
But I hope that it was at least
    interesting, if it was long.
  • Not Synced
Thanks again for the great interest
  • Not Synced
    in the RAZ Mobility Webinar
    about Android accessibility.
  • Not Synced
    Thanks for dialing in,
    for joining the session.
  • Not Synced
    We truly appreciate your time.
  • Not Synced
We hope that you were able to learn
    many new things
  • Not Synced
or to get answers to some
    of your questions
  • Not Synced
    and expand your knowledge
    about Android accessibility.
  • Not Synced
As mentioned, the Webinar will be
    available as a recorded session.
  • Not Synced
We will be sending out an info
    with the appropriate links.
  • Not Synced
    We are also excited about
additional Webinars that will be hosted
  • Not Synced
over the next period of time
related to some of our new products
  • Not Synced
    or some additional accessibility features.
  • Not Synced
So we hope to have you
    as a participant
  • Not Synced
    on some of the next
    RAZ Mobility Webinars as well.
  • Not Synced
Thank you very much for your time
and have a great rest of the week.
  • Not Synced
    >> Robert Felgar: Thank you, everybody.
