Android Accessibility Webinar
-
0:15 - 0:18>> Nermin Selimic: During the Webinar
today, we will have several presenters. -
0:18 - 0:22It will be Robert Felgar,
the CEO of RAZ Mobility. -
0:22 - 0:28It will be myself, Nermin Selimic,
I'm the COO at RAZ Mobility. -
0:29 - 0:37And I am especially glad
to have Jerry Jicha, on our call, -
0:37 - 0:41who is the accessibility specialist
at RAZ Mobility -
0:41 - 0:45and who will be covering
a significant part of the demo today, -
0:45 - 0:50in particular about Android accessibility
for blind users. -
0:51 - 0:56I would like to extend my thanks to
two people -
0:56 - 0:59who are making this call possible
on the support side. -
1:00 - 1:01It is Gayl Hardeman,
-
1:01 - 1:06who is the interpreter
and is providing the CART services, -
1:06 - 1:12and it is also Emil, one of our technical
support specialists from RAZ Mobility, -
1:12 - 1:15who is staying in the background
-
1:15 - 1:19and making sure that all the technology
is running as smooth as possible. -
1:20 - 1:25I would like to mention, at any time,
please feel free to interrupt, -
1:26 - 1:31either for questions – although
we will have two Q&A sessions -
1:31 - 1:35throughout the Webinar – but also,
if you believe that your questions -
1:35 - 1:41are extremely relevant and important
to be asked at that moment, -
1:41 - 1:43please feel free to interrupt.
-
1:43 - 1:48Or, in case there are
major technical difficulties -
1:48 - 1:53and you are not able
to participate in the Webinar -
1:53 - 1:58so that we can address that
as well as possible. -
2:00 - 2:05Quick introduction about RAZ Mobility.
-
2:06 - 2:11RAZ Mobility was founded in 2015
to offer -
2:11 - 2:15States equipment and distribution programs
and other government agencies, -
2:15 - 2:18as well as senior
and assisted living providers, -
2:18 - 2:21schools, nonprofit organizations
and for-profit companies, -
2:21 - 2:26as well as consumers, the very latest
in mobile assistive technology. -
2:27 - 2:32We at RAZ Mobility view ourselves
as an agent for change -
2:32 - 2:35dedicated to ensuring that its customers
-
2:35 - 2:40benefit from the dramatic progress
and evolution in mobile technology. -
2:40 - 2:46And many of you were able to witness,
especially over the last five years, -
2:46 - 2:51and overall, over the last ten years,
with the advent of mobile technology, -
2:51 - 2:57many, many aspects of assistive technology
have changed significantly -
2:57 - 3:03and have allowed for a significant
improvement in assistive technology -
3:03 - 3:09and have added many components that
were unthinkable just several years ago. -
3:10 - 3:12And that's exactly our focus
at RAZ Mobility. -
3:12 - 3:17We are searching for unique solutions
and cutting edge solutions. -
3:18 - 3:23Sometimes it is purely the device
which is exceptional and different. -
3:23 - 3:29Many times, it is also a combination
of the device and the software, -
3:30 - 3:32or simply a third-party solution.
-
3:33 - 3:39We have not limited ourselves to work
only with the specific providers -
3:39 - 3:46or hardware manufacturers but
are rather interacting with providers -
3:46 - 3:49around the globe
in order to accomplish this. -
3:50 - 3:57And, many of our solutions
are provided by companies -
3:57 - 4:00from the United States,
from Europe, -
4:00 - 4:02and from other parts of the world.
-
4:04 - 4:10The preferred approach of RAZ Mobility
is via making these solutions available -
4:11 - 4:20as Android's operating system
mobile devices, smartphones and tablets. -
4:20 - 4:25And we are making
these solutions available -
4:25 - 4:29in combination
with some third-party applications. -
4:32 - 4:37Android and smartphones and tablets
differ a little bit -
4:37 - 4:41compared to other technology
in the marketplace. -
4:41 - 4:46In particular,
if we are talking about iOS, -
4:46 - 4:51and it is simply that there are
two dominant operating systems, -
4:51 - 4:54one being iOS, and the other one Android.
-
4:54 - 4:59iOS being purely available
on Apple devices -
4:59 - 5:04and on the other hand, we have Android
that is an open-source operating system, -
5:04 - 5:09and it is available to
any hardware manufacturers -
5:09 - 5:13who are interested in using Android
as the operating system. -
5:13 - 5:17Hence, you know,
all of you have for sure noticed -
5:17 - 5:21that devices using
the Android operating systems -
5:21 - 5:28are available from manufacturers
such as LG, Samsung, Motorola, -
5:28 - 5:30and so on, and so on.
-
5:32 - 5:39So at this time,
Robert joins the Webinar as well, -
5:39 - 5:42and I am here on video,
so I will ask Robert to -
5:42 - 5:46-- it will be easier
if you can join us on this side. -
5:46 - 5:49We will just need to ask Robert
to grab a chair. -
5:58 - 6:00Here you are, we'll be sharing this
-
6:00 - 6:03I hope that the video experience
will be optimal. -
6:12 - 6:15So moving to the next section,
-
6:15 - 6:21and that is actually about Android
smartphones and tablets, -
6:23 - 6:28so what is the difference between
the Android operating system and iOS? -
6:28 - 6:33The Android operating system
has developed over the years -
6:33 - 6:39as the most popular operating system
for all mobile devices, -
6:39 - 6:42including tablets and smartphones;
-
6:43 - 6:46in particular,
if you are talking about tablets, -
6:46 - 6:51it has been the best-selling
operating system for tablets since 2013. -
6:51 - 6:57And for smartphones, it is also dominant
by any metrics. -
6:57 - 7:04So to illustrate several comparisons
and several data points, -
7:05 - 7:08if you are looking in particular
in the United States -
7:08 - 7:15and if you are looking at market share
as of early 2016, -
7:16 - 7:24nearly 60% of sold devices in early 2016
were devices using -
7:24 - 7:26the Android operating system.
-
7:27 - 7:33Close to 40% were iOS, so Apple devices.
-
7:33 - 7:38And the very, very minimum market share
of other operating systems -
7:38 - 7:42that are still out there,
such as Blackberry and Windows. -
7:43 - 7:45So there is a clear trend over the time
-
7:45 - 7:50that more and more consumers
are selecting Android devices, -
7:51 - 7:55and also if you are looking
into the overall -
7:55 - 7:58-- (Noise interference) –
installed base -
8:00 - 8:05I think someone is -- someone didn't mute
his or her phone, so if you can please -- -
8:09 - 8:10and if you are looking
-
8:10 - 8:15into the overall base
of installed devices -
8:15 - 8:18or devices
that are in the hands of consumers, -
8:19 - 8:23we have 52% running on Android
in the United States -
8:23 - 8:30and 43.5% are running on iOS,
as of 2016. -
8:30 - 8:34So what are
the Android operating system advantages? -
8:34 - 8:39So Robert, if you maybe would like
to mention a couple of things about that. -
8:39 - 8:41>> Robert Felgar: Well I think that
the major advantage -
8:41 - 8:44of the Android operating system,
first of all, is its openness. -
8:45 - 8:50So there's a lot more flexibility
for third-party applications on Android -
8:50 - 8:55than compared to iOS, and you'll see that
in some of the third-party apps -
8:55 - 9:01that we will demonstrate to everyone
later in the presentation. -
9:02 - 9:04You can also have custom rounds -- (check)
-
9:04 - 9:07>> Nermin Selimic: I think we might
have an issue here -
9:07 - 9:14that we didn't hear you well.
(Adjusting audio.) -
9:16 - 9:19>> Robert Felgar: The major advantage,
I think, of the Android operating system -
9:19 - 9:21compared to iOS is its openness.
-
9:22 - 9:26So the -- what this does is, it allows
third-party application developers -
9:26 - 9:31to develop applications
which are not available on the iOS side. -
9:31 - 9:32And you will see some of that.
-
9:33 - 9:36You wilWe'lll see an example of that
later on in the presentation -
9:36 - 9:42when we show you, we'll see a solution
for people with low vision. -
9:45 - 9:49You'll also see that on the Android side,
you could develop custom ROMs. -
9:50 - 9:54There are widgets,
you've got a higher-res screen, -
9:54 - 10:00and there is also multi-window support
which is unique to Android. -
10:00 - 10:03And in some devices like the Moto Z Play,
-
10:04 - 10:09there is much longer battery life
as compared to the iPhone, for example. -
10:12 - 10:15>> Nermin Selimic: So that being said,
this, you know -- -
10:15 - 10:22we are moving really to the most important
part of today's Webinar, -
10:22 - 10:27and these are the specifics
of the Android accessibility and -- -
10:27 - 10:30resulting in the Android advantage.
-
10:31 - 10:33So Robert, would you like
to cover this part? -
10:35 - 10:37>> Jerry Jicha (check): Sure.
-
10:38 - 10:43There are some significant advantages
and some great applications -
10:43 - 10:47that are a part
of the Android operating system. -
10:48 - 10:52These are functionalities that are
native to the operating system. -
10:52 - 10:54They are not third-party applications.
-
10:54 - 10:58They are in your settings in most cases,
or on other parts of the devices. -
10:59 - 11:02An example is TalkBack,
similar to Voiceover, -
11:02 - 11:05which all of you know and
we'll be demonstrating that in detail. -
11:06 - 11:10You can turn on and off captions
in your accessibility settings. -
11:11 - 11:14There is a great way
to increase font size. -
11:15 - 11:19>> (check) Similar to iOS, but with
some differences on the Android side, -
11:19 - 11:21you can actually,
when you increase your font size, -
11:21 - 11:23you can actually increase
everything on your screen, -
11:23 - 11:24not just font size.
-
11:24 - 11:28So the size of the icons, the size
of the notifications, et cetera. -
11:31 - 11:34You've got OK Google, similar to Siri,
-
11:35 - 11:38which some people find better
on the Android side than the iOS side, -
11:38 - 11:40although that is fairly personal.
-
11:41 - 11:47Text to speech, magnification gestures
which you initiate through triple passing, -
11:47 - 11:51Color inversion for people who have
low vision. -
11:51 - 11:56And mono audio also is for people
who have issues -
11:56 - 11:59hearing out a particular ear,
or color correction. -
12:02 - 12:08>> Nermin Selimic: It is important
to mention that -
12:08 - 12:10when you are talking about
the Android advantage, -
12:10 - 12:14that obviously the fact that there are
multiple manufacturers -
12:14 - 12:17of mobile phones and tablets,
-
12:18 - 12:22it does provide to consumers
better device options. -
12:22 - 12:26Whereas, if you are looking
on the Apple side, it is more -
12:27 - 12:33-- you can get from the Android side
as well as on the iOS side, -
12:33 - 12:40you can get a Cadillac solution
a Cadillac side solution. -
12:40 - 12:42However, on the Apple side,
it is purely -- -
12:42 - 12:44you can purchase only a Cadillac.
-
12:45 - 12:48On the Android side,
options are really significant. -
12:48 - 12:50There are entry-level models.
-
12:50 - 12:56There are great mid-range models
of smartphones and tablets, -
12:56 - 12:59as well as top of the range.
-
12:59 - 13:04And all of that allows also
for the significant competition -
13:04 - 13:05in the marketplace,
-
13:05 - 13:10and as consumers, we always know,
as long as there is competition, -
13:10 - 13:14typically consumers benefit from that.
-
13:16 - 13:20So that being said, I would like to
just provide a brief introduction. -
13:20 - 13:24The intention today was not
to talk about hardware. -
13:25 - 13:28However, during the demo,
-
13:28 - 13:31as we are presenting
the accessibility options, -
13:31 - 13:33the built-in accessibility features
-
13:33 - 13:37as well as the third-party
accessibility application, -
13:37 - 13:40we will be using a specific Android phone.
-
13:41 - 13:44In this case, it will be
the Motorola Moto Z Play. -
13:45 - 13:50This is a truly great smartphone
that was introduced to the marketplace -
13:51 - 13:55in 2016, I believe;
to be exact, in October of 2016. -
13:55 - 13:58So you are looking
into the Android space -
13:58 - 14:04which is truly almost
the top of the range device that offers -
14:04 - 14:13an exceptional high-quality display,
in 5.5 inch size, so a big display, -
14:13 - 14:17as big as it can get on a smartphone.
-
14:18 - 14:22It is running on the newest Android
operating system, -
14:22 - 14:25Android 7, called Nougat.
-
14:26 - 14:31It does include an exceptional camera,
very strong processor -
14:31 - 14:35and there are two more items
that are very, very specific, -
14:35 - 14:40and very beneficial if you are talking
about the smartphone. -
14:40 - 14:44And one of them is
the very powerful battery. -
14:44 - 14:49So with this smartphone, even users
who have significant usage -
14:49 - 14:53throughout the day, they can use the phone
easily for more than 50 hours, -
14:53 - 14:58and that's not typical
for many smartphones as we know. -
14:58 - 15:01And the other unique option is really
-
15:01 - 15:07that this phone is the first
modular phone in the world. -
15:07 - 15:09Actually, you can take the back
off very easily, -
15:09 - 15:11it’s just attached by a magnet.
-
15:11 - 15:16And there are some additional,
as Motoracall them, Moto Mods, -
15:16 - 15:17which are actually gadgets
-
15:17 - 15:24one of them, we have seen, it is also very
popular among hard-of-hearing users, -
15:24 - 15:32it is actually a loud speaker that is
an additional 80 decibel speaker. -
15:33 - 15:35And there are additional
Moto Mods, such as -
15:36 - 15:41you know, almost a professional camera,
additional batteries, -
15:42 - 15:45smartphone holders for the car,
I believe as well. -
15:45 - 15:48So it makes this phone
really very, very attractive -
15:48 - 15:55and it is significantly more affordable
than the top of the range -
15:55 - 15:59iPhone or Samsung phones
that are out there. -
15:59 - 16:04So that is the phone that we will be
using during the demos today. -
16:05 - 16:10And one more very interesting phone
from Motorola -
16:10 - 16:15that I would like just to mention briefly
is the newest Motorola phone. -
16:16 - 16:22It is the Moto G5 Plus, that was just
released in April. -
16:23 - 16:31So it is, I would say, most likely, the
best midrange phone in the marketplace. -
16:32 - 16:38So it is -- it uses (check) for a fact
the same processor as the Motor Z play. -
16:39 - 16:46It has many of the great features
including a 5.2 inch display. -
16:46 - 16:50>> Robert Felgar: Two quick points
about the Moto Z Play as well. -
16:50 - 16:52First of all it's unlocked, which is very nice,
-
16:52 - 16:56this GSM also can work with either AT&T
or T-Mobile/// -
16:56 - 17:00The speaker, the Moto Mod speaker,
also works with TalkBack. -
Not Synced
-
Not SyncedIf your person is hard of hearing,
-
Not Syncedyou can put that speaker
on the back of the device -
Not Syncedand it will significantly amplify
-
Not Syncedthe TalkBack sound
that comes from the device.
>> Nermin Selimic: So we are moving
to the next section, -
Not Syncedand again, just as a reminder:
-
Not SyncedI believe we do have some participants
who are not on mute. -
Not SyncedSo we are moving to the next part
of our Webinar today, -
Not Syncedand that is actually
the accessibility for blind users. -
Not SyncedAs mentioned, I am extremely glad
to have Jerry on our team, who is -
Not Syncedone of our accessibility specialists.
-
Not SyncedSo Jerry will be covering
this part of the Webinar today, -
Not Syncedincluding a demo of Android TalkBack
-
Not Syncedand his experience with
the accessibility feature for blind users. -
Not SyncedThis part, this demo, will be done
in the following fashion. -
Not SyncedSo we will be sharing video
with all of you. -
Not SyncedSo we will be
-- you will have the opportunity to – -
Not SyncedI see here a request
for a bigger CART window, -
Not Syncedso I just apologize
for the short interruption. -
Not SyncedWe will increase the size
of the CART window, -
Not Syncedand we have increased the font size.
-
Not SyncedSo I hope that that is working out
for everyone. -
Not SyncedSo we will be adding two more components
now to the screen-sharing, -
Not Syncedand you will be able to see Jerry on video.
-
Not SyncedThat is one part.
-
Not SyncedAnd the other part
that is very significant, -
Not Syncedso as Jerry is running the demo
on the Moto Z Play phone using TalkBack, -
Not Syncedwe will be sharing with you
the exact screen of Jerry's smartphone. -
Not SyncedSo please allow us
for just a couple of minutes -
Not Syncedin order to make sure
that the setup is okay -
Not Syncedand that everyone has
the optimal experience. -
Not Synced>> Jerry, are you ready?
>> Yes, I'm here. I'm ready. -
Not Synced>> Okay. Just we are not seeing
your video, -
Not Syncedso we need to confirm that.
-
Not SyncedEmil, can you please check Jerry's video?
-
Not SyncedJust trying to make sure that everyone
is able to see Jerry. -
Not SyncedSo I will mute myself.
-
Not SyncedAnd, Jerry, if you can please
start talking, -
Not Syncedand they should see
your video is streaming. -
Not Synced>> Jerry Jicha: Hello. I do go by "Jerry."
I prefer "Jerry," actually. -
Not SyncedI have been using Android since 2011,
so I have seen a lot of the, you know, -
Not Syncedenhancements
that have come to TalkBack, -
Not Syncedincluding the very latest version
in TalkBack, -
Not Syncedsome of the benefits
that have been put into TalkBack itself, -
Not Syncedsome of which are through the fact
-
Not Syncedthat some of us who help
with beta testing offer input, -
Not Syncedand Google does listen,
-
Not Syncedand some of the things
that we suggested or asked for -
Not Syncedhave actually been put in
through RAZ Mobility. -
Not Synced>> Nermin Selimic:
I apologize for interrupting. -
Not SyncedWe lost you on video,
so you will need to reenter the PIN. -
Not Synced>> Nermin Selimic: Okay. So yes,
we can see you now. Excellent. -
Not Synced>> Jerry Jicha: There we go.
-
Not SyncedThe wonderful world of technology
from time to time. -
Not SyncedSo as Nermin stated,
I will be demonstrating -
Not Synceda lot of different things on TalkBack.
-
Not SyncedWhen I had helped with Android
in the past, -
Not Syncedseveral of the people have come
from iPhones. -
Not SyncedAnd they would get really frustrated
really quickly saying, -
Not SyncedI can't use Android, I can't use Android.
-
Not SyncedOne of the things
that you will notice today, -
Not Syncedif you are familiar with iOS
and Voiceover, -
Not Syncedthat is there are some gestures
that are the exact same -
Not Syncedas what they are on iOS.
-
Not SyncedFor example, flicking left, flicking right
-
Not Synced-- and that's with one finger;
-
Not Syncedusing Explore By Touch, which that is
when you just put your finger -
Not Syncedon the screen
-
Not Syncedand move your fingers around.
-
Not SyncedThat's the exact same.
-
Not SyncedAlso, double tapping is the exact same.
-
Not SyncedSo just in that, alone,
-
Not Syncedyou have the very basics to
at least move around a bit. -
Not SyncedThere are some gestures
that are very similar, -
Not Syncedbut with maybe one less finger.
-
Not SyncedFor example, when you want to move
from page 1 to page 2, on iOS, -
Not Syncedas you know, you use a straight
finger-swipe from left to right -
Not Syncedor right to left in pages.
-
Not SyncedWhereas, in Android,
it is two fingers swipe -
Not Syncedfrom right to left or left to right.
-
Not SyncedSo never tell yourself you can't do it.
-
Not SyncedBecause if you have used Voiceover,
then you can use Android. -
Not SyncedThat being said, Nermin,
where do we want to start? Nermin? -
Not Synced>> Nermin Selimic: I apologize.
The mute button was pressed. -
Not SyncedSo your screen is already turned on.
-
Not SyncedSo if you can show some basic navigation,
and go into settings -
Not Syncedbecause it is very important
to be able to manage the settings
such as the ring tone and such as that. -
Not SyncedAnd let's navigate over the screen
-
Not Syncedso we will have that visual experience
to TalkBack. -
Not Synced>> Jerry Jicha: And just
as a quick reminder, -
Not SyncedI think we have someone who joined
who may not have heard before: -
Not SyncedPlease make sure phones are muted
for optimal audio for everyone. -
Not SyncedSo we're going to demonstrate now
the very basic gestures -
Not Syncedof getting around in TalkBack.
-
Not SyncedHopefully, you guys can see
most of the screen, if not all. -
Not SyncedSo I will go ahead
and turn the phone on, -
Not Syncedand I will just use my fingerprint
to do it. -
Not SyncedI won't even push the power button.
-
Not SyncedOops.
-
Not Synced>> VOICE: Device unlocked. 1:34 p.m.
Google now launching. -
Not Synced>> Jerry Jicha: It was already on.
-
Not SyncedSo I will put my finger up here.
-
Not Synced>> VOICE: Google search. Press to
activate. -
Not Synced>> Jerry Jicha: I will show you
Google search first. -
Not SyncedAs I move my finger across the screen –
-
Not Synced>> VOICE: Google apps, search button.
-
Not SyncedGoogle search, rescue. RAZ Mobility
installer. -
Not Synced>> Jerry Jicha: As you see,
it will read everything -
Not Syncedthat I was moving my finger across.
-
Not SyncedAgain, flicking forward and backward,
meaning left and right. -
Not SyncedAgain, it's the same thing.
-
Not SyncedFind an icon.
-
Not Synced>> VOICE: Google app.
-
Not Synced>> Nermin Selimic: Sorry, just a second.
-
Not SyncedI believe we are experiencing
some technical difficulty. -
Not SyncedThere are some participants
who cannot see you on video. -
Not Synced>> Jerry Jicha: Okay.
-
Not Synced>> VOICE: Charging battery level 100%.
Both charged to 100%. -
Not SyncedPower charged to 100%.
-
Not Synced>> Nermin Selimic: I have participants
who can -
Not Synced-- are there participants who can
see Jerry on video? -
Not Synced>> Yes, I can see him.
-
Not Synced>> I have never seen his video screen.
-
Not SyncedBut the Screen Meet window is closed.
-
Not SyncedThere is no video from his phone.
-
Not Synced>> Nermin Selimic:
Yes, we will do that. -
Not SyncedWhen I am talking,
you won't be seeing Jerry, -
Not Syncedbut when he is talking,
you should be able to see Jerry. -
Not SyncedJust a little bit of patience
until we reinitiate the Screen Meet. -
Not SyncedSo Jerry, the Screen Meet is closed.
If you will reactivate it. -
Not Synced>> VOICE: Double tap
to reactivate your searches. -
Not Synced>> Nermin Selimic: No worries.
-
Not SyncedI will actually initiate this
from a different location -
Not Syncedand we will be following
your making progress. -
Not SyncedSo just a second.
-
Not SyncedWe will have here another session.
-
Not SyncedOkay. So, Jerry, please continue,
and I will try to follow your session. -
Not Synced>> Jerry Jicha: Okay.
-
Not SyncedSo basically,
as I was going to say earlier – -
Not Syncedlet me get back to the home screen here.
-
Not SyncedSo basically, I will find an icon
on my screen. -
Not SyncedSo now I will flick to the right.
-
Not Synced>> VOICE: Play Store.
-
Not Synced>> Jerry Jicha: You can see
I am actually moving forward -
Not Syncedand if I flick backwards
-- in other words, flick to the left -- -
Not Synced>> VOICE: (Can't discern.)
-
Not Synced>> Jerry Jicha: It works backward.
TalkBack stops. -
Not SyncedThink of it as the control key,
-
Not Syncedif you are using a Windows computer
as JAWS and Wide Eyes (phn), -
Not Syncedit has the same proximity
such that it's the equivalent. -
Not SyncedNow let's go into settings.
-
Not SyncedThat's a very important area,
so I will go to the app drawer. -
Not SyncedAnd because I've gone to settings
rather frequently, -
Not Syncedup above the top of the app drawer
is going to be four icons -
Not Syncedthat you've used rather frequently,
-
Not Syncedand in settings it's in the there.
-
Not Synced>> VOICE: Showing items 1 to 9 of 36.
-
Not Synced>> Jerry Jicha: So now we are in settings.
-
Not SyncedHere we can show you that
Explore By Touch works just as well. -
Not SyncedAgain if you put your finger
on the screen, -
Not SyncedI will just move my finger down.
-
Not Synced>> VOICE: Bluetooth disconnected.
-
Not Synced>> Jerry Jicha: Now I am down
to the bottom of the screen. -
Not SyncedYou are probably wondering,
-
Not Syncedhow do you get
more items on the screen? -
Not SyncedTake two items
and slide them up the screen -
Not Syncedas if you are pulling a page up.
-
Not Synced>> VOICE: Showing items 7 to 14 of 36.
-
Not Synced>> Jerry Jicha: TalkBack tells you,
you are doing it correctly. -
Not SyncedAnd when you stop, TalkBack will tell you
how many items are on the screen -
Not Syncedand where you are at.
-
Not Synced>> VOICE: Notification,
ringer volume at 100%. -
Not SyncedPress to activate.
-
Not Synced>> Jerry Jicha: We will show you
-
Not Syncedhow to go in and change,
let's say, like, your ringer. -
Not SyncedSo in here, in the sound –
-
Not Synced>> VOICE: Showing items 1
through 8 of 12.
Ring volume in the
-- also vibrate for calls off switch. -
Not Synced>> Jerry Jicha: You can change settings.
-
Not Synced>> VOICE: Do not disturb.
Double tap to activate. -
Not Synced>> Jerry Jicha: Simply double tap on it.
-
Not Synced>> VOICE: Media storage.
-
Not Synced>> Jerry Jicha: Showing
how many ringers I have. -
Not Synced>> VOICE: Double tap to toggle.
-
Not Synced>> Jerry Jicha: It's toggle,
not a double tap to toggle. -
Not SyncedIf you want to hear a ring tone,
you just simply double tap it. -
Not Synced(Music plays.)
-
Not SyncedAnd as you see, it plays it.
-
Not SyncedIf you want to accept it --
-
Not Synced>> VOICE: Showing items ...
-
Not Synced>> Jerry Jicha: -- down at the bottom,
-
Not Syncedright above where
your home and overview buttons are, -
Not Syncedyou have OK and Cancel.
-
Not SyncedAnd I hit the OK button so it would stop.
-
Not SyncedSo now I have changed my ringtone to –
some of you may have noticed -
Not Syncedthe Night Rider theme song.
-
Not SyncedAnd you can hear TalkBack
over the level of the ringtone -
Not Syncedwithout doing any type of ducking.
-
Not SyncedDisplay.
-
Not SyncedWell, volume is another good one
that we really need to look at, -
Not Syncedbecause whether you need
to turn it up or down, well, -
Not Syncedthere's a couple different ways
you can do it. -
Not SyncedThe easiest that works for me --
-
Not Synced>> VOICE: Media volume, double tap
to activate, 100% control. -
Not Synced>> Jerry Jicha: Now here's
one of the enhancements in Android. -
Not SyncedIt's a seek control.
-
Not SyncedBack in older days, you had to double tap
and hold your finger on the screen -
Not Syncedand slide your finger to move the slider.
-
Not SyncedNot anymore.
-
Not SyncedI can simply use my volume up
and volume down keys -
Not Syncedto change the volume levels.
-
Not SyncedSo if I press volume down a couple times.
-
Not Synced>> VOICE: 93% speed control.
73% speaker control. -
Not Synced>> Jerry Jicha: You notice
it is getting quieter. -
Not SyncedI can make it louder by pressing up.
-
Not SyncedSo that is how you can use sliders now.
Real quick, the display. -
Not Synced>> VOICE: Back button, set, display.
Adaptive brightness is off. -
Not SyncedBrightness level, lists eleven items.
Brightness -- brightness, 0 percent. -
Not Synced>> Jerry Jicha: If you are totally blind,
-
Not Syncedthis is one of the things
I suggest you do. -
Not SyncedTurn your brightness level down to 0%.
-
Not SyncedAgain, we are on a slider,
so if I want to turn my display up -
Not SyncedI will do it quickly here.
-
Not Synced5% display brightness speed control.
41% display brightness speed control. -
Not Synced>> Jerry Jicha: Hopefully, in the display
you can tell me -
Not Syncedif display has gotten brighter.
-
Not SyncedSo I will turn it back to 0.
-
Not Synced>> VOICE: The 0% brightness speed control.
-
Not Synced>> Jerry Jicha: And when you are done,
you don't have to hit OK; -
Not Syncedyou just hit back.
-
Not Synced>> VOICE: Back button, display.
-
Not Synced>> Jerry Jicha: One of the things
we should have told you in Android, -
Not Syncedat least in the Motos that we play.
-
Not SyncedWe have Back, Home, and Overview.
-
Not Synced>> Jerry Jicha: Where should we
go after that? -
Not SyncedThe speed of TalkBack
or where do you want me to go? -
Not Synced>> Nermin Selimic: Before we move
to that one, -
Not SyncedI think it is always interesting,
-
Not Syncedthe activation and deactivation
of Bluetooth. -
Not Synced>> Jerry Jicha: Okay.
-
Not SyncedWell, I don't have anything
in Bluetooth on here, -
Not Syncedbut it is simple to do.
-
Not Synced>> VOICE: Enlist data usage,
Bluetooth not connected. -
Not Synced>> Jerry Jicha: I can go
into the Bluetooth window. -
Not Synced>> VOICE: Bluetooth, navigate Bluetooth.
More options, On switch. -
Not SyncedDouble tap to toggle.
-
Not Synced>> Jerry Jicha: Bluetooth is on,
and notice it says if it's on, -
Not Syncedif I simply double tap that,
then it's off. -
Not Synced>> VOICE: Off.
-
Not Synced>> Jerry Jicha: So if you have something
that is Bluetooth capable -
Not Syncedand you want to connect it
to your Android, -
Not Syncedyou do it through here.
-
Not SyncedI don't have anything connected to it
at the moment, -
Not Syncedbut in here is where you would do it.
-
Not SyncedAs you can see, it is showing
the items that are available. -
Not Synced>> VOICE: Input the results
if using wireless keyboard. -
Not SyncedAvailable Bluetooth one through 9.
Key 6133 – (indiscernible). -
Not Synced>> So it's showing what is available.
-
Not Synced>> Nermin Selimic: Let's spend
a little bit more time -
Not Syncedlooking into the software settings.
Voice Bridge, Speak, et cetera. -
Not Synced>> Jerry Jicha: All right.
-
Not SyncedYou can get the stuff for TalkBack through the accessibility,
-
Not Syncedso we will go to -- we will have to scroll.
-
Not Synced>> VOICE: (Talking).
-
Not Synced>> Jerry Jicha: One moment here.
-
Not Synced>> VOICE: Back button, back up and reset.
-
Not SyncedMotorola, showing items...
Paragraph. Printing, 0 print jobs. -
Not SyncedAccessibility.
-
Not Synced>> Jerry Jicha: So we go there.
-
Not Synced>> VOICE: Accessibility, services,
TalkBack on. -
Not SyncedDouble tap to activate. TalkBack.
-
Not Synced>> Jerry Jicha: In the settings button,
it's up there in the top right corner. -
Not Synced>> VOICE: TalkBack settings.
Speech speech, volume. -
Not SyncedText-to-speech settings.
Double tap to activate. -
Not Synced>> Jerry Jicha: Text-to-speech settings
is what Nermin was talking about, -
Not Syncedso let's go there.
-
Not SyncedNow, if you are able to see my screen,
-
Not Syncedhere is where you might see
something different. -
Not SyncedWhen you get your Moto Z play,
-
Not Syncedyou only have
the Google text-to-speech engine. -
Not SyncedHowever, those of you
who can see my screen -
Not Syncedcan see I actually have a couple others.
-
Not SyncedThis is one thing you cannot do on iOS
as far as buying synthesizers -
Not Syncedand using them with voiceover.
-
Not SyncedFor example, and I will use
a particular synthesizer real quick -
Not Syncedjust to show you that it is there, and
it is one that a lot of blind people like. -
Not SyncedThey find it very easy to understand,
-
Not Syncedand we're not going to spend
a lot of time on it, -
Not Syncedbut I will just show you it is there.
-
Not Synced>> VOICE: (Talking).
-
Not Synced>> Jerry Jicha: All of us know "elephant."
-
Not SyncedAnd the phone is just basically telling me
-
Not Syncedwhat this software synthesizer
might have the capability of doing. -
Not SyncedSo I just have to hit OK.
-
Not SyncedSo if any of you
can hear that pretty well, -
Not Syncedthere is the voice
you should be familiar with. -
Not SyncedNow, it does cost more
but one of the benefits -
Not Syncedis that it is a lot more responsive
than the Google GPS. -
Not SyncedI will go ahead
and switch back to Google, -
Not Syncedand one of the things
you wanted us to demonstrate -
Not Syncedwas the pitch and the speed.
-
Not Synced>> VOICE: 15% speech rate.
Double tap to activate. -
Not Synced>> Jerry Jicha: So below your engines,
you will find your pitch and your speed. -
Not SyncedSpeed is the first one.
-
Not Synced>> VOICE: 15% speech control.
Press volume speech to adjust. -
Not Synced>> Jerry Jicha: It is telling us
what to do. -
Not SyncedSo use your down key whenever
you have your slider highlighted. -
Not Synced>> VOICE: 10% speed control.
5% speed control (slower). -
Not Synced>> Jerry Jicha: Or if you want it faster.
-
Not Synced>> VOICE: (Talking faster).
-
Not Synced>> Jerry Jicha: You can see
it does it on the fly, -
Not Syncedso you can hear how fast
it is going to talking when you do it. -
Not Synced>> VOICE: 15% speed control.
-
Not Synced>> Jerry Jicha: And as far as pitch
-- there is pitch right there. -
Not Synced>> VOICE: 20% speed control.
Pitch volume keys to adjust. -
Not Synced>> Jerry Jicha: If I want
to lower its pitch, -
Not Synced5% speed control, 10% speed control.
-
Not Synced>> Jerry Jicha: I just use the volume keys
to raise or lower the pitch. -
Not SyncedAnd there you go!
-
Not SyncedSo there again, the very basics
of setting your settings – the speech -
Not Syncedthe way you want it
and what is comfortable for you. -
Not Synced>> Nermin Selimic: That is great, Jerry.
Thanks a lot. -
Not SyncedAre there any tips
you can provide to users with, -
Not Syncedit's not for switching permanently
on or off TalkBack, -
Not Syncedbut just to provide everyone
the opportunity to understand -
Not Syncedhow easy it is to suspend
and reactivate TalkBack? -
Not Synced>> Jerry Jicha: All right.
-
Not SyncedSo let's say that you've got someone
next to you -
Not Syncedthat wants to borrow your phone,
they are excited. -
Not SyncedObviously, (A),
they won't know how to use TalkBack. -
Not Synced(B), it might get in the way.
-
Not SyncedSo it is really easy to suspend TalkBack.
-
Not SyncedAll you have to do is go back here.
And what I will do -- -
Not Synced>> VOICE: TalkBack, back, accessibility.
Items 1 through 8 of 22. -
Not SyncedBack button, settings.
-
Not Synced>> Jerry Jicha: So I wanted
to get somewhere. -
Not SyncedAt any rate, what I will do
is press and hold -
Not Syncedthe volume up and volume down keys
for about a second to two seconds. -
Not Synced>> VOICE: Suspend TalkBack, TalkBack.
-
Not Synced>> Jerry Jicha: All right.
So if I flip through this screen here. -
Not Synced>> VOICE: Are you sure you want to
suspend TalkBack? -
Not SyncedYou can resume TalkBack
from the notification -
Not Syncedby returning to the lock screen.
-
Not SyncedOnly show this warning, check box.
-
Not Synced>> Jerry Jicha: It will always have
this dialogue every time -
Not Syncedunless you change this check box,
which is what I am going to do. -
Not SyncedI don't want to see that check box.
-
Not Synced>> VOICE: Cancel button.
>> Jerry Jicha: I will hit OK. -
Not Synced>> VOICE: TalkBack suspended.
-
Not Synced>> Jerry Jicha: And now,
I don't want to go touching my phone, -
Not Syncedbut if I did, now another person
can use it -
Not Syncedbecause TalkBack is suspended.
-
Not SyncedSee, I am touching my screen,
and there's nothing. -
Not SyncedSo to bring TalkBack back,
it's real simple. -
Not SyncedGo ahead and turn your phone off
-
Not Synced-- well, push the power button,
so that the screen is off. -
Not SyncedAnd then simply turn the screen back on.
-
Not Synced>> VOICE: TalkBack resumed.
-
Not Synced>> Jerry Jicha: And notice it's back.
Go ahead and unblock. -
Not Synced>> VOICE: Unblock. Settings.
-
Not Synced>> Jerry Jicha: And as you see,
TalkBack is back up and running -
Not Syncedthe way it used to be.
-
Not SyncedAnd now -- I want to show you real quick
because I checked that check box. -
Not SyncedNow, when I suspend TalkBack
using the two volume keys -- -
Not Synced>> VOICE: TalkBack suspended.
-
Not Synced>> Jerry Jicha: -- it just
immediately suspends it. -
Not SyncedYou don't have to hit the OK button
if you uncheck that check box. -
Not Synced>> VOICE: TalkBack resumed.
-
Not Synced>> Jerry Jicha: And there you go!
-
Not Synced>> Nermin Selimic: Excellent.
-
Not SyncedIn your experience, Jerry,
how much are you relying on the device? -
Not SyncedAre you using the OK Google?
How is it working out for you? -
Not Synced>> Jerry Jicha: I use it
from time to time. -
Not SyncedI don't use it all the time.
-
Not SyncedBut there are some things you can do
that is rather nice. -
Not SyncedYou can tell it to call people.
You can use it to send a text message. -
Not SyncedYou can also ask a general question,
just like Siri, you know, -
Not Syncedwhat is the temperature, things like that.
-
Not SyncedAnd it's just as responsive as, you know,
Siri would be on the iPhone. -
Not SyncedYou can even use it to open apps.
Playing music. -
Not SyncedPossibly even going to websites.
-
Not SyncedI just personally don't use it
all the time, -
Not Syncedbut, you know, for example,
if I am just out and about, -
Not Syncedand I want to know
what the temperature is, -
Not SyncedI could just say, OK, Google,
what is the temperature? -
Not Synced>> VOICE: it is 62 degrees,
-
Not Synced>> Jerry Jicha: So it's 62 degrees.
-
Not SyncedAnd on the screen it shows
the weather for where I'm at. -
Not SyncedYou probably can't see it very well
just because of my screen is dimmed, -
Not Syncedand I don't know how good
a webcam will show it. -
Not SyncedBut if I were to touch the screen --
-
Not Synced>> VOICE: Menu button.
Select today, tomorrow. -
Not Synced>> Jerry Jicha: So it does have
a weather card up on the screen -
Not Syncedright at the moment.
-
Not Synced>> VOICE: Back button, home screen.
>> Jerry Jicha: Go ahead. -
Not Synced>> Nermin Selimic: I think
what is important to mention -
Not Syncedis that in my experience, as a user
you are talking about voice commands -
Not Syncedavailable to Google on Android devices,
-
Not Syncedand if you are talking about Siri,
it is worth it to mention that -
Not Syncedon the Android side, for voice command,
-
Not Syncedit is not only about
the fewer voice commands, -
Not Syncedbut it is also about the fact that
-
Not Syncedthe whole power of Google
stands behind that. -
Not SyncedCorrect? So there are
additional algorithms, -
Not Syncedthere are additional options,
-
Not Syncedthat a certain command is being given
to voice command and so on, -
Not Syncedthat there is significantly more going on
-
Not Syncedand significantly more being available
in the background -
Not Syncedin order to determine if the voice command
wasn't 100% clear. -
Not SyncedWhat is it actually that
the user is trying to accomplish? -
Not SyncedSo at least in my user experience,
this was significant. -
Not SyncedSometimes I will be struggling with Siri,
because what am I supposed to do? -
Not SyncedWhat commands on Google that
-
Not Synced-- that doesn't happen with Google
too frequently. -
Not SyncedWith that being said, Jerry,
we are talking about the smartphone. -
Not SyncedSo smartphones are doing many things
that at the end of the day -
Not Syncedit is being used for phone communication.
-
Not SyncedSo I would like to show participants
how to manage phone calls -
Not Syncedwhen dealing with Android accessibility.
-
Not SyncedSo as the first part of that,
I will be actually placing a call, -
Not Syncedand I will be calling you,
-
Not Syncedand just to illustrate to everyone
how you will be answering the call. -
Not Synced>> Jerry Jicha: Okay.
-
Not SyncedOne of the things you do have to do,
unfortunately, -
Not Syncedthere is no gesture
for answering the phone. -
Not SyncedYou have to find the answer button.
-
Not Synced– found the answer button,
double tapped it, -
Not Syncedand now I am on the phone call.
-
Not SyncedOne thing I do find in TalkBack is
-
Not Syncedyou do have the ability to set
the power button as a hang-up button. -
Not SyncedSo trying to find the end button
on the screen, -
Not Syncedyou can actually just
push the power button -
Not Syncedand it will actually
just hang up the call. -
Not SyncedWhat do you want to do
at this point, Nermin? -
Not Synced>> Nermin Selimic: Jerry,
let's place a call, please. -
Not Synced>> Jerry Jicha: Okay.
-
Not SyncedSo a couple different ways
we could do it. -
Not SyncedWe could cheat
and use Google to do it. -
Not SyncedBut we will do it
he old-fashioned way -
Not Syncedand go to the phone app.
-
Not Synced>> VOICE: Home screen one.
Phone. Showing item one of one. -
Not Synced>> Jerry Jicha: And we will choose
the dial pad button. -
Not Synced>> VOICE: Dial pad button.
-
Not Synced>> Jerry Jicha: Which is pretty much
below the home button. -
Not SyncedWe will call a screen -- we will call
local time and temperature. -
Not SyncedIt is not local to me,
but it is local by about 20 miles. -
Not Synced>> VOICE: By the way, Jerry,
excellent presentation. -
Not SyncedPhone dial pad.
-
Not Synced>> Jerry Jicha: All right!
-
Not SyncedThere is something else that
we were going to be bringing up soon. -
Not SyncedAs you saw, I just got a text message
and you just heard what it said. -
Not SyncedYou talk back,
read the notification as it came in. -
Not SyncedSo we will show you how to respond to that
and look at it here in just a moment. -
Not SyncedSo we will really quickly dial
a phone number here. -
Not Synced>> VOICE: Selection -- --
>> Jerry Jicha: You just lift your \finger. -
Not Synced>> VOICE: 4 (speaking numbers.)
-
Not Synced>> Jerry Jicha: 4-1-9-6-7-3-4-7-0-1.
-
Not SyncedI could double-check that
by looking at the edit box. -
Not SyncedI dialed that number.
-
Not SyncedRight below the 0 is your dial button,
and there you go. And ... [ Pause ]. -
Not Synced>> Nermin Selimic: I'm sorry --
-
Not Synced>> Jerry Jicha: Oops. Hang on.
-
Not Synced>> Nermin Selimic: I'm sorry.
-
Not Synced>> Jerry Jicha: I was trying
to hang up the call. (Laughing). -
Not Synced>> Nermin Selimic: Also
one of the very frequent scenarios -
Not Syncedis obviously users browsing a website.
-
Not SyncedSo let's just -- browse a website.
-
Not SyncedLet's go to CNN.com or something like that
and see how that is working out. -
Not Synced>> VOICE: Unlocked. 2:01 p.m.
Home screen one of three. -
Not SyncedOverview, Google now launching.
Overview button. Double tap. -
Not Synced>> Jerry Jicha: So we can open Chrome.
-
Not Synced>> VOICE: 70%, 100%.
Http:(), -
Not Syncedclick notification, message pending.
-
Not SyncedHttp Section:// –
-
Not Synced>> Jerry Jicha: Now,
one of the nice things you can do – -
Not Syncedas you can see,
I am using my volume keys. -
Not Synced>> VOICE: Slash, equal files …
-
Not Synced>> Jerry Jicha: I can use the volume keys
to move through the edit field. -
Not SyncedSo there's a lot to the voice,
-
Not SyncedI think there was a Clear All,
but I don't think there is. -
Not Synced>> VOICE: Delete, delete,
delete, delete. -
Not Synced>> Jerry Jicha: It looks like
I have done a – -
Not SyncedI have a lot here to delete.
-
Not Synced>> VOICE: Key delete. Delete.
Delete. Key delete. -
Not Synced>> Jerry Jicha: Unfortunately,
you can't just hold down the delete key. -
Not Synced>> VOICE: Progress 70 percent.
End rescue.comment delete. -
Not SyncedKey deleted 90%. Delete, delete.
Key delete. Deleted. -
Not Synced>> VOICE: Key delete, delete.
Key deleted. -
Not SyncedDelete. Delete. Delete. Delete.
-
Not Synced>> Jerry Jicha: I wonder
if I could get out -
Not Syncedand just use Google.
-
Not Synced>> Nermin Selimic: Let's try it.
Let's do that. -
Not Synced>> VOICE: 2:03 p.m.
-
Not Synced>> Jerry Jicha: Okay. OK Google,
open www.CNN.com. -
Not Synced>> VOICE: Open Web page.
Progress bar, 26%. 77%. 81%. -
Not SyncedCNN bringing you the latest news
and video. -
Not Synced98%. Link.
-
Not SyncedFormer United States First Lady
Michelle Obama's -
Not Syncedfile on architecture speech
in Orlando, Florida. -
Not Synced>> Jerry Jicha: If you wanted
to read that, -
Not Syncedyou would simply double tap on it
-
Not Syncedbecause it did say "link"
at the very end. -
Not Synced>> Nermin Selimic: Excellent.
-
Not SyncedI think that was very, very helpful.
-
Not SyncedJerry, do you believe it's interesting
just to show installing new apps? -
Not SyncedIt's always very, very relevant,
-
Not Syncedso could you just illustrate the process
how to install a new app? -
Not Synced>> Jerry Jicha: All right.
So it's actually pretty easy. -
Not SyncedWe will go to the home screen.
-
Not Synced>> VOICE: Home button. Home button.
Home screen one of three. -
Not Synced>> Jerry Jicha:
And we need the Play Store. -
Not Synced>> VOICE: Chrome. Play Store.
Play Store, apps and games. -
Not Synced>> Jerry Jicha: So we can
do a voice search -
Not Syncedor we could just type it.
-
Not Synced>> VOICE: Search button.
>> Jerry Jicha: Weather Bug. -
Not Synced>> VOICE: Play Store.
Weather Bug widget, star rating 0.703. -
Not SyncedWeather by Weather Bug everyone.
Star rating -- 18,405 reviews. -
Not Synced>> Jerry Jicha: All right.
-
Not SyncedSo if I wanted to install weather bug,
first thing I have to do -
Not Syncedis actually select the app.
-
Not Synced>> VOICE: Showing items
4 and 5 of 16. -
Not SyncedWeather Bug. Search Google Play.
-
Not SyncedWeather Bug.
Weather by Weather Bug. -
Not SyncedInstalled button.
-
Not Synced>> Jerry Jicha: I will double tap
the install button -
Not Synced>> VOICE: Play Store,
showing items 1 to 4 of 17. -
Not SyncedWeather by Weather Bug.
Cancel by hitting button. -
Not Synced>> Jerry Jicha: It's still downloading
the Weather Bug. -
Not SyncedNotice I am using Explore By Touch.
-
Not SyncedThat's how I noticed I could go ahead
and open it if I want to. -
Not SyncedI can open it right from here
if I want to,
but that is how you install an app. -
Not SyncedIt's done. It's already done.
It's that simple to do. -
Not Synced>> Nermin Selimic: Excellent.
Thanks, Jerry. -
Not SyncedSo it does illustrate text messages,
you received one. -
Not SyncedI think just in the interest of time,
-
Not Syncedbecause there are
several other categories -
Not Syncedthat we would like to cover today,
I think it is very intuitive, -
Not Syncedhow it works, for people
to send text messages and – -
Not Syncedto receive text messages,
-
Not Syncedand for sending text messages,
-
Not Syncedthere is the option to utilize
either voice commands -
Not Syncedor just to type using TalkBack.
-
Not SyncedSo I think this is also a good Segway
into the third-party application. -
Not SyncedYou I believe we will not have
sufficient time to demo -
Not Syncedall of the applications,
-
Not Syncedbut we can briefly touch on them
and I will be pulling up -
Not Syncedsome of these applications for everyone.
-
Not SyncedAnd, Jerry, if you can share
some of your experience -
Not Syncedabout several \apps.
-
Not SyncedThe first one that comes to my mind is,
Tap Tap See. -
Not Synced>> Jerry Jicha: Actually,
I was going to say that -
Not Syncedthere are two of them that come to mind
that are my biggest favorites. -
Not SyncedTap Tap See is one of them.
-
Not SyncedHow many times have you gone
into your refrigerator? -
Not SyncedYou have bought frozen pizzas
or even lasagna. -
Not SyncedMy girlfriend and I
have been buying lasagnas lately. -
Not SyncedShe likes the five-cheese.
I like the meat lovers. -
Not SyncedThe boxes are the exact same size.
-
Not SyncedNo way to know which is which.
-
Not SyncedLet's use Tap Tap See.
-
Not SyncedYou can take a picture of an item
-
Not Syncedand it may actually tell you
what it is in most cases. -
Not SyncedNow, there are times depending
on lighting and things like that -
Not Syncedthat it may not work right away.
-
Not SyncedTry to change the angle,
try taking the picture a second time,
and it usually does work. -
Not SyncedI use that app almost on a daily basis.
-
Not SyncedOne of the other big apps that I use
when I am out traveling, -
Not Syncedespecially here in Marian, and I just
moved here a couple months ago. -
Not SyncedI don't know Marion at all.
-
Not SyncedSo when the cab drivers
are taking us places, -
Not Syncedone of the apps that I love to use
is nearby explore: -
Not SyncedNearby explorer allows you to hear
what streets are coming up, -
Not Syncedif the street is on your left
or your right, places of interest. -
Not SyncedYou can even bus drivers
-- the drivers that you are in – -
Not Syncedone of the things that you can
get it to tell you -
Not Syncedis the speed you are driving at.
-
Not SyncedYou can also get it to tell you
when you are turning on a street -
Not Syncedwhat direction you are heading,
so you can learn the area -
Not Syncedjust by using that.
-
Not SyncedYou can start walking the area
and using it as well. -
Not Synced>> Nermin Selimic: Great, Jerry.
Thanks a lot. -
Not SyncedI believe when you and I were talking
about the third-party applications, -
Not SyncedI believe that you mentioned also
the Get There app. -
Not SyncedThat can be also very helpful
for the navigation. -
Not SyncedAs far as I recall,
-
Not Syncedyou are a big fan
of the third-party application -
Not Syncedthat allows you to voice-control
your camera. -
Not Synced>> Jerry Jicha: Well, actually, it's not
just the voice control part that I like; -
Not Syncedit's the fact that the actual app
is perfectly accessible. -
Not SyncedOne of the drawbacks
on the Moto Z Play -
Not Syncedis the camera app that comes
with it by default is zero accessible. -
Not SyncedHowever, if you download a program
called Open Camera, -
Not Syncednot only can you find the shutter button
and the zoom controls and everything else, -
Not Syncedjust about everything is accessible –
switching it from photo to video, -
Not Syncedaccessing the settings, which is huge,
-
Not Syncedbeing able to, as Nermin said,
saying the word "cheese," such as that, -
Not Syncedand you can have it
take the picture automatically. -
Not SyncedOne of the other big programs that I
-- and I totally forget until just now – -
Not Syncedthat I actually strongly suggest
people get -
Not Synced-- is KNFB Reader.
-
Not SyncedThis actually came in handy
the other day -
Not Syncedwhen I went to cook a lasagna
in the oven. -
Not SyncedI didn't know the directions, and –
-
Not Syncedall I had to do was take a picture
out of the correct side of the box, -
Not Syncedand when it found text
that was readable, it read it. -
Not SyncedSo, you know, the O.C.R. capability
of KNFB Reader is really good. -
Not SyncedI have actually used it when my computer
has all of a sudden stopped talking. -
Not SyncedI have used KNFB Reader,
have taken a picture of the screen -
Not Syncedand tried to figure out what the error is.
-
Not SyncedAnd figure out what the error is.
-
Not SyncedYou can even use it for that.
-
Not Synced>> Nermin Selimic: Great!
Well, Jerry, thanks a lot. -
Not SyncedI think it was
a very impressive presentation, -
Not Syncedand also confirmation
-
Not Syncedhow the Android accessibility features
and options can be used. -
Not SyncedAgain, thank you very much.
-
Not SyncedWe apologize
for the small technical difficulty. -
Not SyncedSo our original idea was
that you would be able -
Not Syncedto see literally Jerry's smartphone.
-
Not SyncedThat didn't happen.
-
Not SyncedBut I was trying to “shadow”
Jerry as good as possible, -
Not Syncedso I was emulating
-
Not Syncedwhatever he was performing
on his smartphone. -
Not SyncedI must admit Jerry was sometimes
moving much faster using TalkBack -
Not Syncedthan I did, looking at the display.
-
Not SyncedBut I think it was still an experience
that was representative -
Not Syncedfor the use of TalkBack.
-
Not SyncedSo there are two additional features
-
Not Syncedwhen we are talking about Android
and third-party accessibility -
Not Syncedthat I would like Robert to talk about,
and one of them is actually Braille. -
Not SyncedAnd the other one is the newest
Android accessibility feature, -
Not SyncedSelect to Speak.
-
Not Synced>> Robert Felgar: Just a quick word
about Braille. -
Not SyncedAn Android device can be used
with a Braille display. -
Not SyncedIt is used with an app called BrailleBack
which has been around a number of years. -
Not SyncedWe won't be demonstrating it but,
like I said, -
Not Syncedit's been around for a long time.
-
Not SyncedOne of the new test accessibility features
that was added in TalkBack 5.2.0, -
Not Syncedwhich was just released this past week,
is an option called Select to Speak. -
Not SyncedSelect to Speak is a great function
for people with low vision. -
Not SyncedSelect to Speak.
-
Not SyncedSo say the user wants to use
their limited vision to call, -
Not Syncedit works for that purpose.
-
Not SyncedTheir eyes work sufficiently
for that purpose. -
Not SyncedBut let's say they can't read
a news article or e-mail with small fonts. -
Not SyncedThey can simply press a little button
that appears -
Not Syncedin the right bottom edge of the screen
and then pass the part of the screen -
Not Syncedthat they want spoken,
and then the device will start speaking. -
Not SyncedSo I will just show you on the screen
how that works. -
Not SyncedLet's first go to CNN as an example.
-
Not SyncedSo we have pulled up CNN.
-
Not SyncedLet's say we want the device
to read the article. -
Not SyncedSimply press the button on the right:
>> VOICE: Dallas firefighter shot,
authorities say. -
Not Synced>> Robert Felgar: So there you go.
-
Not SyncedThat's how you can get the device
on any portion of the screen -
Not Syncedthat the user cannot see.
-
Not SyncedIt is a good option for people
with low vision -
Not Syncedor with any print disability.
-
Not Synced>> Nermin Selimic: What about Braille
and Braille possibility? -
Not Synced>> Robert Felgar: That's what I mentioned,
there is an app for that called BrailleBack. -
Not Synced>> Nermin Selimic: Very good.
-
Not SyncedSo the next part of our Webinar
is dedicated to accessibility option -
Not Syncedfor low vision users.
-
Not SyncedBut before we move to that part
of the Webinar, -
Not Syncedclearly the accessibility for people
who are blind, -
Not Syncedit is a very significant topic,
-
Not Syncedand I think we went through
so many options. -
Not SyncedSo at this time I would like
to open the floor, -
Not Syncedif there are any questions, before we move
on to the next item on the agenda. -
Not SyncedSo please feel free to ask questions
and don't forget to unmute yourself. -
Not Synced(Pause).
-
Not SyncedIt appears there are no questions
at this time. -
Not SyncedSo we will move to the next section,
-
Not Syncedbut please keep in mind
that we will have at the end, -
Not Syncedas I said before, an opportunity for you
to ask questions, -
Not Syncedin case you have some questions by then,
to make sure that there is an opportunity -
Not Syncedfor you to ask questions
-
Not Syncedand also an opportunity
for such questions to be answered. -
Not SyncedSo we will be moving to the next part,
-
Not Syncedwhich is the accessibility
for low-vision users. -
Not SyncedBefore I will just read along here
to complete. -
Not SyncedAs previously, you will be able to see
the screen of the smartphone -
Not Syncedthat I will be utilizing.
-
Not SyncedOkay. So if you are talking about
the accessibility feature -
Not Syncedfor low-vision users, clearly,
whatever we have seen so far, -
Not Syncedwhat was presented by Jerry,
-
Not Syncedthat is obviously a great option
for many low-vision users. -
Not SyncedHowever, you know, on the other hand,
there are many low-vision users -
Not Syncedwho have no need to use TalkBack
all the time, -
Not Syncedbut it was a good solution for them as well. So the Select to Speak that
-
Not SyncedRobert showed just minutes ago,
-
Not SyncedI think that is a great addition
to the accessibility features on Android. -
Not SyncedFor a low-vision user
who can easily navigate -
Not Syncedeither to place a phone call,
to open the dial pad and things like that, -
Not Syncedthey might be struggling
-
Not Syncedif they are reading something
that is smaller on the display, -
Not Syncedand in that case, they can easily
keep the select to talk activated -
Not Syncedall the time and it is available to them,
as you can see here, in the corner. -
Not SyncedCorrect?
-
Not SyncedSo I will press this now,
and I will capture the mail app, -
Not Syncedand I will try to demo this one more time,
so hopefully you can hear it. -
Not Synced>> VOICE: E-mail.
-
Not Synced>> Nermin Selimic: And very, very –
a tool that is very easy to access -
Not Syncedat any time.
-
Not SyncedSo in addition to that, there are many,
many other built-in options -
Not Syncedfor low-vision users.
-
Not SyncedAs always, they can be accessed
through settings, -
Not Syncedand then moving down to accessibility.
-
Not SyncedSo some of the most interesting ones
would be, -
Not Syncedthat I would like to mention here,
is the magnification gesture. -
Not SyncedSo in this case, it is over the switched on.
-
Not SyncedSo what happens is,
-
Not Syncedbasically I will go back now
to the home screen. -
Not SyncedIf I triple tap, you will see that anything
that is on the display or screen -
Not Syncedwill be increased.
-
Not SyncedAnd then, again, triple tapping
will deactivate it. -
Not SyncedI have heard feedback from some users
that if they are typing something -
Not Syncedvery quickly or deleting something
and they hit the delete button -
Not Syncedthree times very quickly
-
Not Syncedit will actually activate
the magnification gesture -
Not Syncedso that is something people
should be aware of -
Not Syncedwhen they are using it.
-
Not SyncedSo it is just a nice feature,
although I must admit, -
Not Syncedif someone is using that
in order to read an optical, let's say, -
Not Syncedon Chrome or something like that,
it has a significant disadvantage; -
Not Syncedit will increase the text that is there.
-
Not SyncedBut it will be running out of space
-
Not Syncedso maybe you will start
scrolling to the left or right -
Not Syncedin order to read that.
-
Not SyncedBut I think it is very, very helpful option.
-
Not SyncedGoing back into accessibility
and all the different options that we have, -
Not Syncedwe have also the font size
that can be adjusted, correct? -
Not SyncedSo the current setting on this device
is default. -
Not SyncedI will start changing this now to large,
and you can see already -
Not Syncedin the upper part on the screen,
what is the change -
Not Syncedand what is the increase in font
-
Not Syncedthat such change in settings
would result in. -
Not SyncedSo very helpful.
-
Not SyncedAgain, it is helpful for low-vision users
but only to a certain extent. -
Not SyncedAdditionally, there are options also
to manage the display size, -
Not Syncedso how things are being displayed,
-
Not Syncedin particular if we are talking about
the call wall, text messages, so on. -
Not SyncedAs you can see here, this is currently on default. I will change that to large, and, you know, it is also changing. It is very helpful.
-
Not Synced>> Robert Felgar: One point difference
between the display size and font size, -
Not Syncedthe display size,
not only is the text enlarged, -
Not Syncedbut all other aspects of the font
are enlarged – -
Not Syncedso the notification, applications,
not just the text, -
Not Syncedas is the case with font size.
-
Not Synced>> Nermin Selimic: Okay.
-
Not SyncedThe additional option
also for low-vision users -
Not Syncedis the text-to-speech output.
-
Not SyncedYou know, we have seen that,
and it's not only navigate -
Not Syncedthe home screen or just the settings
but also to receive text messages -
Not Syncedor e-mails and so on and so on.
-
Not SyncedAdditional option is also
the color inversion. -
Not SyncedThis one, unfortunately,
when I'm sharing my smartphone screen, -
Not Syncedthis one is not being transmitted
using the sharing technology. -
Not SyncedBut basically, what happens,
everything is inverted -
Not Syncedso whatever was white,
the background becomes black. -
Not Synced>> Robert Felgar: Instead of
black on white, it is white on black. -
Not Synced>> Nermin Selimic: Exactly.
-
Not SyncedAnd there are many options also
for the color correction. -
Not SyncedIt can be activated, and there are
different corrections and modes. -
Not SyncedThere is the red-green, blue-yellow,
so on, so on, -
Not Synceddepending on the challenges the user
is facing and also -
Not Syncedthe type of the vision impairment,
that can be adjusted. -
Not SyncedWhen talking about low-vision users,
the very interesting part is actually -
Not Synced-- and I just realized I had
the color correction on. I apologize. -
Not SyncedI will switch that off
-
Not Synced-- there are very, very powerful
third-party applications. -
Not SyncedThere is one third-party application
in particular -
Not Syncedthat I wanted to share
with everyone today. -
Not SyncedAnd something that is very specific
about the application, -
Not Syncedthe application called Claria Zoom.
-
Not SyncedActually very specific.
-
Not SyncedThe application is free.
-
Not SyncedIt only exists on the Android.
-
Not SyncedIf you recall, I did mention
at the beginning of this session -
Not Syncedthat Android is an open source
operating system, -
Not Syncedso Android does allow developers,
application developers, -
Not Syncedas well as hardware manufacturers,
-
Not Syncedto have more access
-
Not Syncedto the operating system and to customize
it a little bit more, -
Not Syncedand the Claria Zoom developers
clearly utilized that option, -
Not Syncedthat benefit
-
Not Syncedand they have come up with the
Claria Zoom solution for low vision users. -
Not SyncedSo rather than continue to talk
about Claria Zoom -
Not SyncedI will show you a couple of things
about Claria Zoom -
Not Syncedwhich I believe are very, very illustrative
of the power of Claria Zoom -
Not Syncedand the benefits it generates for low vision users.
-
Not SyncedSo Claria Zoom can be used in order
to create an additional home page. -
Not SyncedAnd in this case,
we have adjusted the size of the icons -
Not Syncedon the home screen
for the most relevant icons. -
Not SyncedSo you can see literally
that the whole home screen -
Not Syncedon this large 5.5 inch display
was utilized to show only four icons. -
Not SyncedWe have seen in many cases
-
Not Syncedthat the users
with significantly impaired vision -
Not Syncedwere able to continue to use
the smartphone -
Not Syncedexactly because of this solution.
-
Not Synced>> Robert Felgar: And to be clear,
you can actually customize -
Not Syncedthe number of icons
that appear on your screen. -
Not SyncedSo if you didn't want four –
-
Not Syncedyou wanted ten
or something of that nature, -
Not Syncedyou can do that as well.
-
Not Synced>> Nermin Selimic: Yes, and you can
select the ones you want. -
Not Synced>> Robert Felgar: Yes.
-
Not Synced>> Nermin Selimic: In addition to that,
as we had seen also -
Not Syncedfor the built-in feature,
-
Not SyncedClaria can also support color inversion
as well as color correction. -
Not SyncedThe approach is exactly the same,
only that in this case, -
Not Syncedit deals with the larger magnification
but that can be supported as well. -
Not SyncedI think what is also very, very interesting
in the case of Claria, typically, -
Not Syncedthe built-in accessibility features,
on Android as well as on Apple, -
Not Syncedthey do provide if somebody is typing
a text message, for the keyboard, -
Not Syncedthe key pad, as well as the text message,
-
Not Syncedthey will be only increased
to a certain extent. -
Not SyncedBut not really as much as is needed
for low vision user. -
Not SyncedSo in the case of Claria,
that's actually quite different, -
Not Syncedand I will try to show that here.
-
Not SyncedSo as you can see, correct,
the key pad is really very, very big. -
Not SyncedCorrect?
-
Not SyncedAnd then, even when you are typing
a text message, -
Not Syncedit is very easy to use that.
-
Not SyncedAdditional options that are built in,
you can see here the blue button? -
Not SyncedThat is actually speech-to-text,
-
Not Syncedso a text message or e-mail
can be dictated as well. -
Not SyncedAn additional option that is very,
very exciting here -
Not Syncedis the ability for users to have
easy access to certain content -
Not Syncedon certain websites.
-
Not SyncedIt's good to know based on
the magnification gesture -
Not Syncedyou are increasing the display sizes
-
Not Synced-- (voice interruption) –
-
Not Syncedit is increasing,
but it is running out of space. -
Not SyncedIt is impossible to see.
-
Not SyncedSo the benefits that are available
to Claria is actually -
Not Syncedthat it will pick up the content,
-
Not Syncedand then process it.
>> VOICE: New text found
at that location -- -
Not Synced>> Nermin Selimic: So in this case,
I'm using the Claria browser, -
Not Syncedin order to access a website.
-
Not SyncedSo just like any other regular browser.
-
Not SyncedBut then it has the ability to process
the content from that website -
Not Syncedand present it as a pure text file
where the font is significantly increased, -
Not Syncedand it's not running out of the display,
but rather, it was simply on the screen -
Not Syncedand users can process it.
-
Not SyncedThat was a video, so I am trying to.
-- trying to … -
Not Syncedas you can see here, so we have
a specific article. -
Not SyncedAnd now, that can be converted.
-
Not SyncedAnd you can see here how large it is
-
Not Syncedand there is nothing
that is running out of the display, -
Not Syncedand the user can continue to scroll down
very conveniently. -
Not SyncedAnd all of this, the extracted text,
can be also increased even further, -
Not Syncedand on top of that, all the color inversion
and color correction -
Not Syncedcan be applied to it as well.
-
Not SyncedSo I think that was really
a very significant benefit. -
Not Synced>> Robert Felgar: You can change
the colors -
Not Syncedby simply tapping on the screen
with three fingers.
You can see how that works. -
Not Synced>> Nermin Selimic: Excellent.
-
Not SyncedSo Claria Zoom has many,
many other options -
Not Syncedas you can see here on the top.
-
Not SyncedThere is also the pull-down display
for the other options -
Not Syncedand you can see how big that appears.
-
Not SyncedI wanted to provide you
with some initial experience -
Not Syncedinto Claria's zoom and how it can help
a low vision user. -
Not SyncedSo other great applications
that we have seen -
Not Syncedand received great feedback
from low vision users -
Not Syncedare applications such as the
Dragon Mobile Assistant -
Not Syncedfor voice command.
-
Not SyncedIt works very well and is very popular.
-
Not SyncedThere is also the IDEAL magnifier
that can be used literally for anything; -
Not Syncedcorrect?
-
Not SyncedWe have the phone built-in camera
that is actually picking up -
Not Syncedwhatever the user would like to see.
-
Not SyncedMagnified is a part of the --
-
Not SyncedI don't know, from a magazine
or something like that, -
Not Syncedor some instructions on a product
or a packaging, and so on. -
Not SyncedMoving to great applications
such as the Giganticon, -
Not Syncedthat one is actually very interesting.
-
Not SyncedIt is somehow like only one part
of Claria Zoom, -
Not Syncedso the only thing, in quotes,
that it does is actually, all the – -
Not Syncedall the application icons
that we have seen are here -
Not Syncedon the home screen.
-
Not SyncedSelected icons can then be included
into Giganticon will show up -
Not Syncedon the screen making it much easier
for users to navigate. -
Not SyncedI am trying to accelerate the pace
in order to make sure -
Not Syncedwe have enough time
for the remaining sections -
Not Syncedand also for questions and answers.
-
Not SyncedBut I believe between Jerry's
very detailed presentation of Talkback, -
Not Syncedand some of the specific options
for low vision users, -
Not SyncedI think the overall accessibility for users
who are blind or low vision -
Not Syncedis very, very helpful.
-
Not SyncedSo moving to the next part
-
Not Syncedis the accessibility
for Deaf and hard of hearing users. -
Not SyncedThere are multiple built-in options
such as captions. -
Not SyncedWe see text messages are very popular
among users. -
Not SyncedThere are options for users
who are deaf in one ear, -
Not Syncedso there is an adjustment for the audio
-
Not Syncedso that purely mono audio
is being streamed. -
Not SyncedAnd then also, when you are talking
about notifications -
Not Syncedthere are great notifications
-
Not Syncedthat can be utilized
as pop-up notifications -
Not Syncedand there is incoming e-mail or
text messages notifications -
Not Syncedas well as vibration.
-
Not SyncedSo when you are talking about captions,
-
Not SyncedI think that it is something that is
very easy to show here. -
Not SyncedAnd you can see here,
it can be accessed as always. -
Not SyncedAnd you have multiple options
to adjust the language settings -
Not Syncedas well as the text size.
-
Not SyncedCurrently the text size is very large.
-
Not SyncedAnd the text size can be changed
to normal. -
Not SyncedAnd you can see it is
significantly smaller, -
Not Syncedso it does show right away
what the text size will be -
Not Syncedas well as the caption style.
-
Not SyncedSo many options that are available
on the captions. -
Not SyncedMono audio I mentioned.
-
Not SyncedThat is also very, very helpful.
-
Not SyncedThen we are looking into
-
Not Synceda significant selection
of third-party applications -
Not Syncedsuch as closed-caption players.
-
Not SyncedThe Pro Deaf translator is really a very,
very interesting application -
Not Syncedthat can help individuals who are deaf
for an in-person communication -
Not Syncedif they are trying to communicate
to someone who doesn't know ASL. -
Not SyncedI hope it will work now here
with screen sharing. -
Not SyncedBut this is actually very, very nice.
-
Not SyncedSo basically users can type in
a certain word, -
Not Syncedand the solution will convert that
into ASL. -
Not Synced>> Robert Felgar: Cool.
-
Not Synced>> Nermin Selimic: So it just illustrates
how many options are out there, -
Not Syncedthat there are many, many developers
who are trying to come up -
Not Syncedwith some great solutions.
-
Not SyncedNow, I think what is most relevant
-
Not Syncedfor individuals who are deaf
or hard-of-hearing, -
Not Syncedif we are talking about smartphones
and tablets -
Not Syncedand if we are talking about
communication, -
Not Syncedthat is all the tools that are available
related to relay services. -
Not SyncedSo if you are talking about
Hamilton CapTel, solutions like that, -
Not Syncedor clear caption,
-
Not Syncedthose will work very well
on Android devices. -
Not SyncedAnd I think, Robert, you wanted
to mention something -
Not Syncedthat is also new applications
on the development? -
Not Synced>> Robert Felgar: Yes.
-
Not SyncedThere's a couple of exciting
new applications -
Not Syncedthat are being developed
that aren't quite available yet -
Not Syncedbut are worth mentioning
and teasing a little bit about. -
Not SyncedFirst of all, there's an application
available -
Not Synced-- or that will be available soon –
-
Not Syncedthat will allow the user
of an Android phone – -
Not Syncedit won't be available at least initially
on iPhone - -
Not Syncedit will allow the person to take
an audiogram with their device -
Not Syncedand then all the output that comes
from the device will be adjusted, -
Not Syncedso the pitch will be adjusted
based on the audiogram. -
Not SyncedSo basically the phone will be acting
to a significant extent like a hearing aid. -
Not SyncedSo when a person speaks on the phone,
they won't be hearing that normal tone; -
Not Syncedthe pitch and so forth will be adjusted
based on that audiogram. -
Not SyncedSo in a sense, the need for hearing aids
when people speak on the phone -
Not Syncedwill be significantly reduced.
-
Not SyncedAnd we are expecting that to come out
within the next two months, -
Not Syncedwhich is really, really exciting.
-
Not SyncedAnother app that is being developed,
and we just tested it the other day, -
Not Syncedis a service that captions
ongoing phone calls. -
Not SyncedSo the calling party and the called party,
-
Not Syncedif they have this app on their device,
-
Not Syncedwhatever either party says
will be transcribed visibly -
Not Syncedon the device using the regular dialer,
without a communications assistant. -
Not SyncedSo basically they will be using
speech-to-text. -
Not SyncedThe speech-to-text engine of Google –
to provide the transcription, -
Not Syncedinstead of the CA in the middle.
-
Not SyncedAnd we actually tested this this last week
and it works amazingly well. -
Not SyncedAnd like I said, one of the amazing things
about it, -
Not Syncedif you simply use your regular dialer,
you don't need to download -
Not Syncedany sort of fancy app
or anything like that. -
Not SyncedThese are things which are coming,
both of which will be unique to Android. -
Not Synced>> Nermin Selimic: Thank you, Robert.
-
Not SyncedThere is one more application
that is very, very interesting. -
Not SyncedI found this very, very helpful.
-
Not SyncedThis is actually the application
called TextHear,
which is an application that provides
speech-to-text transcription. -
Not SyncedText Hear. It can be installed
on any Android device, -
Not Syncedand it will actually be providing
a live text-to-speech transcription. -
Not SyncedSo it works very well.
-
Not SyncedThe device needs to be online
so that it can be supported. -
Not SyncedAs mentioned, I have used it
on multiple occasions -
Not Syncedwhen there was no interpreter available,
and it did work very well. -
Not Synced>> Robert Felgar: And one last point
about 3rd party apps. -
Not SyncedAll the major VRS and caption apps
that are available for iOS -
Not Syncedare also available for Android,
-
Not Syncedso all the large VRS companies
like Sorenson and Purple and so on, -
Not Syncedthey both have both Android
and iOS applications. -
Not Synced>> Nermin Selimic: So we were talking
-
Not Syncedso much about
different 3rd party applications, -
Not Syncedand there are literally tens of thousands
of accessibility applications out there. -
Not SyncedMany are truly exceptional,
they work very well. -
Not SyncedOthers are rather disappointing;
-
Not Syncedthey don't work at all
or they are not reliable, so on. -
Not SyncedSo here at RAZ Mobility in order to make
things easier for consumers, -
Not Syncedwe did initiate an effort
-
Not Syncedthat resulted in the RAZ
Mobility application installer app. -
Not SyncedCan you share, Robert, some info
about RAZ Mobility's application? -
Not Synced>> Robert Felgar: Yes.
-
Not SyncedThe application is essentially
a list and description -
Not Syncedof all the applications that we felt
-
Not Syncedwere helpful to people
with various types of disabilities. -
Not SyncedSo we just turned on the application.
-
Not SyncedYou can see that there are
a number of categories such as -
Not Syncedhearing, vision, speech and cognition.
-
Not SyncedAnd let's say you have a –
you are hard of hearing or you are deaf. -
Not SyncedYou click or tap on the hearing category,
and then you can see -
Not Synceda number of the suggested applications
-
Not Syncedfor people that are
hard of hearing or deaf. -
Not SyncedAnd we've gone through all of those
-
Not Syncedand kind of separated the wheat
from the chaff, if you know what I mean,
and tested the ones we think
are really good -
Not Syncedand gotten rid of those apps that
we did not think are actually helpful. -
Not SyncedThen you can see with vision,
-
Not Syncedthere's a similar list of applications
that we recommend. -
Not SyncedAnd then, if you tap on
one of these applications,
let's say Braille -- -
Not Synced>> Nermin Selimic: That has
to be installed. -
Not SyncedThat one has not been installed.
-
Not Synced>> Robert Felgar: Okay. I will tap on
Giganticon – -
Not Syncedit takes you to the Play Store
where the app can be downloaded -
Not Syncedand the app will be installed.
-
Not SyncedIt is available on the Google Play Store.
-
Not SyncedYou can download it or try it simply
by typing in RAZ Mobility, and it's free. -
Not Synced>> Nermin Selimic: So it's on Google Play,
-
Not Syncedjust to search for RAZ Mobility
on Google Play and it will show up. -
Not SyncedSo it provides a great selection,
as mentioned, -
Not Syncedand it makes the installation very easy.
-
Not SyncedIf users have the RAZ Mobility app,
open the app, select the category, -
Not Syncedfind one of the recommended apps,
-
Not Syncedand the next step is just to install
the app, and they are actually done. -
Not SyncedAnd we are also updating
the list of applications, -
Not Syncedadding some new applications.
-
Not SyncedWe have seen in some cases,
in some applications we have, -
Not Syncedbecause they stopped performing
as well as they did in the past. -
Not SyncedBut we are adding more applications.
-
Not SyncedAlso a disclaimer.
-
Not SyncedMost of the applications
that we have selected -
Not Syncedin the RAZ Mobility store
are free applications. -
Not SyncedThere are some applications
that do require a payment. -
Not SyncedAnd we did label such applications
accordingly. -
Not SyncedSo just before we move
to the Q&A part of our Webinar today, -
Not SyncedRobert, any closing remarks
related to Android methods -
Not Syncedthat you would like to provide?
-
Not Synced>> Robert Felgar: I just want to say
that Android accessibility -
Not Syncedhas really come a long way
over the years. -
Not SyncedThere was a perception for a long time
that Android was behind iOS, -
Not Syncedand TalkBack wasn't as good
as Voiceover. -
Not SyncedBut I think you see –
saw from Jerry's presentation -
Not Syncedthat you can do pretty much everything
on Android using TalkBack -
Not Syncedas you can with Voiceover in the iOS
-
Not Syncedand they are really quick
and comparable in many respects. -
Not SyncedFurthermore there is a Google team
that is working on TalkBack constantly. -
Not SyncedLike I said, the next version, 5.2.0,
came out last week, -
Not Syncedand I am sure they already started
working on the next version. -
Not SyncedSo for six months or so
-
Not Syncedthere are important updates
or improvements -
Not Syncedso we are expecting
continued improvements, -
Not Syncedand Google is constantly investing
in new accessibility features -
Not Syncedwith each release.
-
Not Synced>> Nermin Selimic: Thanks, Robert.
-
Not SyncedSo we are moving now to
questions and answers. -
Not SyncedPlease feel free to ask
any type of questions. -
Not SyncedIn case there are questions
that we cannot answer immediately, -
Not Syncedwe will be more than glad to follow up
-
Not Syncedwith you and either reach out to you
or provide answers via e-mail. -
Not SyncedI know that some questions
were coming into the chat option
in the conferencing tool. -
Not SyncedSo I don't have access to all of them
at this time. -
Not SyncedIt's just a little bit challenging
to formulate all of that. -
Not SyncedSo please feel free to ask
such questions now. -
Not SyncedSo hit the mute button
and unmute yourself,
or we will be following up with you
by e-mail -
Not Syncedand answer all of your questions.
-
Not Synced>> Hi, this is Sarah from
the Minnesota TED program. -
Not SyncedI have a question.
>> Sure, Sarah. -
Not Synced>> I was just wondering,
you guys have the -
Not Synced-- let's see here -- you called it
the RAZ Mobility installer app, -
Not Syncedor installer.
-
Not SyncedHow do you determine
if a specific accessible app -
Not Syncedis good for that person with disability?
-
Not SyncedDo you have people with disabilities
test the devices? -
Not SyncedLike what is your criteria?
-
Not Synced>> Nermin Selimic: So, here is
the following process, Sarah, -
Not Syncedthat we have.
-
Not SyncedYes, people with disabilities,
it is relevant, and they do ask – -
Not Syncedwe do ask people in focus groups
to provide feedback. -
Not SyncedWe also ask does it work,
and is it relevant and helpful for them? -
Not SyncedEven before that,
and what we have seen is necessary, -
Not Syncedis to test apps for their functionality
and reliability. -
Not SyncedThere have been certain apps
which really have some issues. -
Not SyncedI would say the concept is great.
They can be very helpful. -
Not SyncedBut, you know, in real life, they don't –
they simply don't perform, -
Not Syncedfrom a technical standpoint.
-
Not SyncedTheir reliability is not there,
or their performance is a little bit – -
Not Syncedit works on Mondays
but not on Tuesdays, -
Not Syncedfor whatever reason.
-
Not SyncedSo these are the two most important
avenues that we look at -
Not Syncedwhen we are trying to come up
with the recommendation. -
Not Synced>> Robert Felgar: Also, Sarah,
and there is a flexibility app. -
Not SyncedLet's say for your program
-
Not Syncedyou want add different app
to be installed -
Not Syncedor an additional app
-
Not Syncedand we have the flexibility to do that
for individual programs. -
Not Synced>> Sarah: Okay. Thank you.
-
Not Synced>> Nermin Selimic: I think there was
a question here asked in the chat room. -
Not SyncedWhat about features for people
with learning disabilities? -
Not SyncedThat is an excellent question.
-
Not SyncedYes, there are features and especially
there are 3rd party applications -
Not Syncedfor people with specific
cognitive disabilities. -
Not SyncedAnd if you take a look
at the RAZ Mobility installer application, -
Not Syncedyou can see here that our category
does exist for cognition, -
Not Syncedand its application such as
the autism express or ACSE for autism -
Not Syncedso there are applications for people
with learning disabilities as well. -
Not Synced(Pause).
-
Not Synced>> Sorry. It's Sally.
-
Not SyncedWith iOS, they have the rotor capability
-
Not Syncedwhere if you are surfing the web,
for example, -
Not Syncedyou can select
what your swipes would do. -
Not SyncedFor example, going by heading or link.
-
Not SyncedDoes the feature exist with TalkBack?
-
Not Synced>> Nermin Selimic: Let's see if we still
have Jerry on the phone, -
Not SyncedI think if he is, he is the best person
to answer that question. -
Not SyncedJerry, are you still on the call?
-
Not Synced>> Robert Felgar: Okay, looks like
he's not there. -
Not SyncedBut I am virtually positive –
although I am not -- -
Not Synced>> Jerry Jicha: I am here.
-
Not Synced>> Robert Felgar: Oh, you are, Jerry.
Could you answer that question, please? -
Not Synced>> Jerry Jicha: In my case, yes,
there actually is a gesture -
Not Syncedthat will do things like paragraph,
line, character. -
Not SyncedAnd when you are in the web browser,
it will do things like heading. -
Not SyncedAnd all you have to do to that gesture
is -- give me one moment here – -
Not Syncedyou just do like a swipe down.
>> VOICE: Words, line. Paragraph.
Default. -
Not Synced>> Jerry Jicha: See? So default is
the default action. -
Not SyncedBut let's say I were to highlight
an item -- real quick -- work me MDM. -
Not Synced>> VOICE: Actions reduced, characters.
-
Not Synced>> Jerry Jicha: So if I swiped it
right right now -- -
Not Synced>> VOICE: W O R K –
-
Not Synced>> Jerry Jicha: As you see,
-
Not Syncedit will actually read it
character by character, -
Not Syncedbecause I changed what the swipe does.
-
Not SyncedI hope that answers that question.
-
Not Synced>> It does. Thank you.
-
Not Synced>> Robert Felgar: It's not rotor, is it?
-
Not Synced>> Jerry Jicha: It is a rotor in the sense
that when you do a down gesture – -
Not Syncedbecause the up gesture does
the opposite way – -
Not Syncedthen you go through a list of options.
-
Not SyncedThen you check the one you want.
-
Not SyncedSo it is a rotor sort of,
-
Not Syncedbut you don't have to like
turn your fingers on the screen
to access it. -
Not SyncedYou can just do like a swipe up
or a swipe down. -
Not SyncedAs you saw me do earlier –
maybe you saw it -- I was flipping down. And if I flick up -- -
Not Synced>> VOICE: Paragraph right word
paragraph -
Not Synced>> Jerry Jicha: See, it is actually going
backwards through the list, -
Not Syncedso it is actually a rotor in that sense.
-
Not Synced>> Robert Felgar: Thank you, Jerry.
-
Not Synced>> Jerry Jicha: And Sally, if you like,
-
Not Syncedwe can summarize and provide
the exact response via e-mail. -
Not Synced>> Sally: Thank you very much.
-
Not Synced>> Nermin Selimic: Are there
any other questions at this time? -
Not Synced>> What about specifically
for deaf-blind? -
Not SyncedAre there -- sorry.
-
Not SyncedDo you have things that are specifically
for deaf-blind? -
Not Synced>> Robert Felgar: Well, we don't have
any applications -
Not Syncedthat are specifically for deaf-blind.
-
Not SyncedThey are either for one or the other.
-
Not SyncedYou know, obviously Braille,
a Braille display can be used -
Not Syncedby individuals who are deaf-blind
and you've got BrailleBack. -
Not SyncedBut we don't have anything that is
unique that is intended for both, -
Not Syncedthat I am aware of, on Android.
-
Not Synced>> Nermin Selimic: And I assume
you are referring to a scenario of – -
Not Syncedyes, I think your answer is all right.
-
Not SyncedThere is nothing that has been
developed specifically for the deaf-blind -
Not Syncedother than the BrailleBack.
-
Not Synced>> Robert Felgar:Right.
-
Not Synced>> And what about answering
telephones, -
Not Syncedif you have a physical disability
where you can't actually – -
Not Syncedyou know, somebody who has –
is a quadriplegic. -
Not SyncedHow could they answer a phone call?
-
Not Synced>> Nermin Selimic: Excellent question.
-
Not SyncedToday we were focused around
vision and hearing -
Not Syncedas the backdrop of disability.
-
Not SyncedThere are additional products
offered by RAZ Mobility. -
Not SyncedIn particular, I would mention
two other types of disabilities. -
Not SyncedThere's actually speech impairment
-
Not Syncedand also individuals
with mobility disabilities. -
Not SyncedAnd going back to your question,
there is a solution that we are offering -
Not Syncedwhich is called Sesame solution.
-
Not SyncedThat provides the opportunity to people
who cannot control their hands for, -
Not Syncedyou know, typical reasons
we have seen, -
Not Syncedlike connected with the service,
the VA, in the area of amputees, -
Not Syncedfor instance; amputees, so on,
returning from the Armed Services. -
Not SyncedSo controlling any smartphone or tablet,
any Android smartphone or tablet, -
Not Syncedthey can control them
either by their head movement -
Not Syncedor through an extended range
of voice commands. -
Not SyncedSo they can easily answer
an incoming call by simply saying -
Not Synced"Sesame, answer the call."
Or "End call." -
Not SyncedThey can open up applications,
they can type text messages, -
Not Syncedby using this specific solution that
consists of an Android mobile device, -
Not Synceda selected Android mobile device,
-
Not Syncedand special software
that is installed on it. -
Not SyncedNo other equipment is needed
-
Not Syncedand it actually uses the device
that is built in camera -
Not Syncedin order to track the user's
head movement. -
Not SyncedAnd it worked very well
even in scenarios -
Not Syncedwhere users had limited
head movement. -
Not Synced>> Robert Felgar: And that's
an example of a solution, again, -
Not Syncedthat is only available
on the Android platform. -
Not SyncedIt can't be built for iOS.
-
Not Synced>> Nermin Selimic: Does that
answer your question? -
Not Synced>> Yes. Thank you very much.
-
Not Synced>> Robert Felgar: Any other questions?
-
Not Synced>> Nermin Selimic: Please feel free
at any time -
Not Syncedto reach out to RAZ Mobility.
-
Not SyncedYou can reach out through our –
-
Not Syncedmany of you have Robert's
or my contact. -
Not SyncedNow you can reach out to us also
info@RAZmobility.com. -
Not SyncedSo please feel free to reach out to us
for additional questions via e-mail -
Not Syncedor just give us a call at any time.
-
Not SyncedWe would be more than glad to answer
any additional questions. -
Not Synced>> May I make a real quick comment?
-
Not Synced>> Nermin Selimic: Yes, please.
-
Not Synced>> Jerry Jicha: It's Jerry.
-
Not SyncedOne thing also, because I know
someone had asked something -
Not Synceda while back
and I couldn't say anything at the time. -
Not SyncedThey had asked, let's just use blind,
for example, -
Not Synceddo blind people test the apps
that are for blind people? -
Not SyncedI think Robert can even tell you,
Nermin is still getting used to me, -
Not Syncedbut Robert can definitely tell you,
-
Not Syncedthere have been several times
where I have gotten ahold of him -
Not Syncedbecause I am actually totally blind,
I have no sight whatsoever, -
Not Syncedand if an app comes out,
either he'll tell me to test it -
Not Syncedor I have gotten ahold of him to say
hey, Robert, this app is junk, -
Not Syncedor hey, Robert, this app is cool,
it's something we should look into. -
Not SyncedBut to kind of help put
some people's minds at ease, yes -
Not SyncedPeople like me do test apps to see,
-
Not Synceddo they work, do they do the job
they are supposed to do? -
Not SyncedAnd is it easy to use?
-
Not Synced>> Robert Felgar: Yes. Thank you, Jerry,
and also, as Jerry can say, -
Not Syncedif you want to look up a particular app
and its accessibility, -
Not Synceda great place for people who are blind
is the eyes-free Google group -
Not Syncedwhich has a huge number of users
-
Not Syncedand there is constant conversation
about the best apps and alternatives -
Not Syncedand so forth.
-
Not SyncedSo that is a great avenue to learn
about accessible apps. -
Not Synced>> Nermin Selimic: So we are now
at 3:01 p.m. Eastern. -
Not SyncedWe did exhaust the full 120 minutes.
-
Not SyncedI was hoping that we would be able
to complete it in 90 minutes. -
Not SyncedIt was a very lengthy session.
-
Not SyncedBut I hope that it was at least
interesting, if it was long. -
Not SyncedThanks again for the great interest
-
Not Syncedin the RAZ Mobility Webinar
about Android accessibility. -
Not SyncedThanks for dialing in,
for joining the session. -
Not SyncedWe truly appreciate your time.
-
Not SyncedWe hope that you were able to learn
many new things -
Not Syncedor to get answers to some
of your questions -
Not Syncedand expand your knowledge
about Android accessibility. -
Not SyncedAs mentioned, the Webinar will be
available as a recorded session. -
Not SyncedWe will be sending out an info
with the appropriate links. -
Not SyncedWe are also excited about
additional Webinars that will be hosted -
Not Syncedover the next period of time
related to some of our new products -
Not Syncedor some additional accessibility features.
-
Not SyncedSo we hope to have you
as a participant -
Not Syncedon some of the next
RAZ Mobility Webinars as well. -
Not SyncedThank you very much for your time
and have a great rest of the week. -
Not Synced>> Robert Felgar: Thank you, everybody.
