What are you wearing? Take it off: Edda Hamar at TEDxKurilpa
-
0:08 - 0:10Hello
-
0:10 - 0:12A few years ago,
-
0:12 - 0:14I bought this dress
-
0:14 - 0:16for fifteen dollars.
-
0:16 - 0:18Bargain!
(Laughter) -
0:18 - 0:20I was going out to meet up
with some friends. -
0:20 - 0:22I thought, my friends,
they know all my other dresses. -
0:22 - 0:24I'm gonna need something new.
-
0:24 - 0:26And naturally, I went and picked up
something new. -
0:27 - 0:29Before I continue,
-
0:29 - 0:32I’d like to ask you all to consider
what you're wearing today. -
0:33 - 0:35Where it’s from,
-
0:35 - 0:37and if you remember
what was on the tag. -
0:38 - 0:40Because little did I know,
-
0:40 - 0:43that there were seven sneaky facts
about the dress that I just bought. -
0:45 - 0:47This dress is made
of cotton and polyester. -
0:47 - 0:49To grow enough cotton
to create this dress, -
0:49 - 0:51you need 10,000 liters of water.
-
0:51 - 0:53That’s a small swimming pool.
-
0:55 - 0:57To bleach and dye this dress,
-
0:57 - 1:00toxins are run off into
Chinese ecosystems, killing wildlife. -
1:01 - 1:04The design process
of this dress created waste. -
1:04 - 1:06This waste is called “off-cuts”.
-
1:06 - 1:10And usually it’s traded as rubbish
and sent straight to land field. -
1:12 - 1:14This dress was made in China,
in a sweatshop. -
1:14 - 1:18It was most likely made by someone,
who works 16 hours a day -
1:18 - 1:20with less than minimum pay.
-
1:21 - 1:24Last year, there was a factory collapse
in Bangladesh, -
1:24 - 1:26which killed a thousand people
-
1:26 - 1:28because the health and safety standards
-
1:28 - 1:29weren't up to scratch.
-
1:32 - 1:35The distribution of this dress,
the carbon footprint, I should say, -
1:35 - 1:36is huge.
-
1:36 - 1:38Often a dress will start in Europe,
-
1:38 - 1:42it will then source material from India,
will then flight to China -
1:42 - 1:43to be manufactured,
-
1:43 - 1:44well then often come back to Europe
-
1:44 - 1:49to have hand-made
or more finer details added to it. -
1:49 - 1:52And then, it's shipped
around the world for retail. -
1:52 - 1:53Collectively,
-
1:53 - 1:58Australians purchase one billion items
of clothing per year. -
1:59 - 2:01There is 22 million of us,
-
2:01 - 2:04which makes it nearly an item per week.
-
2:05 - 2:08Do we really need that many clothes?
-
2:09 - 2:12Did I need to buy this particular dress?
-
2:15 - 2:20The company I bought this dress from
doesn't have a recycling scheme. -
2:20 - 2:23Unfortunately, 5 % of our land field
-
2:23 - 2:26is made up of an unwanted
clothing and textiles. -
2:29 - 2:31My name is Edda.
-
2:31 - 2:33I am the director of Undress Runways,
-
2:33 - 2:36a sustainable fashion show
here in Brisbane, -
2:36 - 2:37and now Melbourne.
-
2:37 - 2:40I discovered sustainable fashion
four years ago -
2:40 - 2:42when I saw our local designers
were doing great things -
2:42 - 2:44with very little support.
-
2:45 - 2:49We curate sustainable daywear,
evening wear, lingerie, and swimwear -
2:50 - 2:51from around the world.
-
2:52 - 2:53We bring these clothes together
-
2:53 - 2:55to one location
-
2:56 - 2:57on one night
-
2:57 - 2:58once a year
-
3:00 - 3:02Think organic fibers,
-
3:02 - 3:06garments dyed with turmeric and red wine,
-
3:06 - 3:08zero-waste collections,
-
3:08 - 3:09ethically produced garments,
-
3:09 - 3:11bamboo underwear,
-
3:11 - 3:12and much more.
-
3:15 - 3:16At Undress Brisbane,
-
3:16 - 3:17we started off
-
3:18 - 3:20by taking it off.
-
3:21 - 3:24And we began to think more sustainably
-
3:25 - 3:26about the way
-
3:26 - 3:28we create our clothes
-
3:28 - 3:29and shop.
-
3:55 - 3:57If you don’t know where it was made,
-
3:57 - 4:00where it came from,
or where it will end up, -
4:00 - 4:01take it off.
-
4:01 - 4:03What I'm wearing now
-
4:03 - 4:06is what we call "sustainable fashion".
-
4:07 - 4:09It is made from bamboo,
-
4:09 - 4:13which only requires rain water to grow.
-
4:16 - 4:19It is treated with
a low water-dying process. -
4:19 - 4:23and the waste water is recycled
to preserve our ecosystems. -
4:24 - 4:25It is made of off-cuts.
-
4:25 - 4:29These three sections are actually off-cuts
from another collection. -
4:30 - 4:32And the off-cuts of the off-cuts
-
4:32 - 4:34are then used
in the rest of the collection. -
4:36 - 4:37It is made in Australia.
-
4:37 - 4:40in a place that has
healthy working conditions -
4:40 - 4:41and with fair pay.
-
4:43 - 4:45It came from Melbourne.
-
4:45 - 4:47They're off-cuts
from a designer in Melbourne -
4:47 - 4:48and it was made here in Brisbane.
-
4:48 - 4:51So the carbon footprint was much lower.
-
4:52 - 4:54The use phase:
-
4:55 - 4:56I always wash this on cold
-
4:56 - 4:59and it use non-toxic laundry detergent
-
4:59 - 5:01to conserve water and the environment.
-
5:03 - 5:05Actually, I borrowed
this dress from a friend. -
5:06 - 5:08So, I will be returning it to her later today.
-
5:09 - 5:13Borrowing clothes is actually a very
sustainable way to pick your next outfit. -
5:16 - 5:18I'm passionate about changing
the fashion industry, -
5:19 - 5:21about providing
sustainable clothing options, -
5:21 - 5:24and supporting designers
who are doing the right thing. -
5:25 - 5:27Everything you are wearing today
-
5:27 - 5:28has a story
-
5:29 - 5:30with contributors.
-
5:31 - 5:33And change comes
from people like you, -
5:33 - 5:36the everyday consumers of clothing.
-
5:36 - 5:37And together,
-
5:37 - 5:39we can change the fashion industry.
-
5:41 - 5:44Sustainable fashion is like turning
the lights off when you leave your room. -
5:44 - 5:47It's like turning the tap off
when you’re brushing your teeth. -
5:48 - 5:50And it’s like using chemist bags
when you go shopping. -
5:51 - 5:54It is an easy choice we can all make.
-
5:54 - 5:56Next time you go shopping,
-
5:57 - 5:58have a look at the tag.
-
5:59 - 6:03And think about where
this piece of clothing came from. -
6:05 - 6:07My Australian dream
-
6:07 - 6:11is to create a world where we,
the consumers of fashion, -
6:11 - 6:12use our dollar
-
6:12 - 6:15to vote for a sustainable
fashion industry. -
6:16 - 6:19An industry where we treat
our fellow human beings -
6:19 - 6:20as worthy individuals
-
6:20 - 6:22and take care of our Earth
-
6:22 - 6:25because we've only got one.
-
6:27 - 6:28So remember,
-
6:29 - 6:31you’ve always got the option
-
6:33 - 6:34to take it off.
-
6:35 - 6:39[Applause]
