What is the Higgs boson?

    proposed by Englert, Brout and Higgs

    that empty space is like a medium
  • Not Synced
    and as particles travel through this medium
  • Not Synced
    some of them interact with it,
  • Not Synced
    some of them don't interact with it,
  • Not Synced
    The ones that do interact with this medium,
  • Not Synced
    they acquire masses,
  • Not Synced
    and the ones that pass through it without interacting,
  • Not Synced
    those are massless particles.

    Let me give you an analogy:

    imagine an infinite field of snow
  • Not Synced
    extending thoughout all of space,
  • Not Synced
    flat, featureless, going in all directions,
  • Not Synced
    maybe the middle of Siberia.
  • Not Synced
    Now imagine that you're trying to cross
  • Not Synced
    this field of snow.
  • Not Synced
    So maybe you're a skier,
  • Not Synced
    and you skim across the top,
  • Not Synced
    that's like a particle that a particle that
  • Not Synced
    does not interact with the Higgs field,
  • Not Synced
    it does not sink into the snow, it goes very fast,
  • Not Synced
    that's like a particle with no mass travelling at the speed of light.

    But maybe you've only got snw shoes,
  • Not Synced
    in that case you sink into the Higgs snow field,
  • Not Synced
    you've got less speed that the skier,
  • Not Synced
    less that the speed of light,
  • Not Synced
    that's like a particle with mass, because you are
  • Not Synced
    connecting, interacting, with that Higgs snow field.
  • Not Synced
    And then finally if you've just got boots on,
  • Not Synced
    then you you sink deeply into the snow,
  • Not Synced
    you go very very slowly,
  • Not Synced
    and that's like a particle with a big mass.
  • Not Synced
    So, think of this Higgs field as being
  • Not Synced
    like this universal field of snow.
  • Not Synced
    Now, where does the Higgs boson come in?
  • Not Synced
    We all know what snow is made out of.
  • Not Synced
    it's made out of snow flakes.
  • Not Synced
    In the same way this universal Higgs snow fields,
  • Not Synced
    is made up out of little quanta,
  • Not Synced
    those quanta are like snowflakes, that's what we call the Higgs boson.
  • Not Synced
    The Higgs boson has this job of giving masses
  • Not Synced
    to all the other elementary particles.
  • Not Synced
    If you look at the basic equations
  • Not Synced
    of the Standard Model, as written on my T-shirt,
  • Not Synced
    they're very symmetric, that way in which
  • Not Synced
    all the different particles appear is the the same.
  • Not Synced
    At least on the top two lines there're nothing
  • Not Synced
    to distinguish particles that have different masses for eaxample.
  • Not Synced
    But this symmetry has to be broken,
  • Not Synced
    electrons are lighter than muons,
  • Not Synced
    the top quark is much much heavier
  • Not Synced
    than the quarks that make up everyday nuclei.
  • Not Synced
    So, the top two lines, the symmetric lines,
  • Not Synced
    cannot be all there is,
  • Not Synced
    there has to be something to discriminate,
  • Not Synced
    to distinguish, between the different types of particle.
  • Not Synced
    And that's the job of the Higgs boson,
  • Not Synced
    that's the job of the two bottom lines.
  • Not Synced
    Depending on how those different types of quark
  • Not Synced
    or the electron and muon,
  • Not Synced
    depending on how they connect to that Higgs field,
  • Not Synced
    that Higgs boson,
  • Not Synced
    we believe they get different masses.
  • Not Synced
    The symmetry between these particles is broken.
