Why I take the piano on the road … and in the air
-
0:05 - 0:08Recently, I flew over a crowd
-
0:08 - 0:10of thousands of people in Brazil
-
0:10 - 0:14playing music by George Frideric Handel.
-
0:14 - 0:17I also drove along the streets of Amsterdam,
-
0:17 - 0:20again playing music by this same composer.
-
0:20 - 0:23Let's take a look.
-
0:23 - 0:31(Music: George Frideric Handel, "Allegro."
Performed by Daria van den Bercken.) -
0:42 - 0:44(Video) Daria van den Bercken: I
live there on the third floor. -
0:44 - 0:46(In Dutch) I live there on the corner.
-
0:46 - 0:47I actually live there, around the corner.
-
0:47 - 0:49and you'd be really welcome.
-
0:49 - 0:52Man: (In Dutch) Does that sound like fun?
Child: (In Dutch) Yes! -
0:52 - 0:56[(In Dutch) "Handel house concert"]
-
1:17 - 1:23(Applause)
-
1:28 - 1:30Daria van den Bercken: All this was a real
-
1:30 - 1:34magical experience for hundreds of reasons.
-
1:34 - 1:36Now you may ask, why have I done these things?
-
1:36 - 1:39They're not really typical for a musician's
-
1:39 - 1:41day-to-day life.
-
1:41 - 1:44Well, I did it because I fell in love with the music
-
1:44 - 1:48and I wanted to share it with as many people
-
1:48 - 1:50as possible.
-
1:50 - 1:52It started a couple of years ago.
-
1:52 - 1:55I was sitting at home on the couch with the flu
-
1:55 - 1:57and browsing the Internet a little,
-
1:57 - 2:00when I found out that Handel had written works
-
2:00 - 2:02for the keyboard.
-
2:02 - 2:05Well, I was surprised. I did not know this.
-
2:05 - 2:09So I downloaded the sheet music and started playing.
-
2:09 - 2:11And what happened next was
-
2:11 - 2:14that I entered this state of pure,
-
2:14 - 2:17unprejudiced amazement.
-
2:17 - 2:20It was an experience
-
2:20 - 2:23of being totally in awe of the music,
-
2:23 - 2:27and I had not felt that in a long time.
-
2:27 - 2:31It might be easier to relate to this when you hear it.
-
2:31 - 2:34The first piece that I played through
-
2:34 - 2:37started like this.
-
2:38 - 2:44(Music)
-
3:03 - 3:07Well this sounds very melancholic, doesn't it?
-
3:07 - 3:10And I turned the page and what came next
-
3:10 - 3:12was this.
-
3:12 - 3:15(Music)
-
3:39 - 3:43Well, this sounds very energetic, doesn't it?
-
3:43 - 3:45So within a couple of minutes,
-
3:45 - 3:48and the piece isn't even finished yet,
-
3:48 - 3:52I experienced two very contrasting characters:
-
3:52 - 3:55beautiful melancholy and sheer energy.
-
3:55 - 3:57And I consider these two elements to be
-
3:57 - 4:00vital human expressions.
-
4:00 - 4:03And the purity of the music makes you hear it
-
4:03 - 4:06very effectively.
-
4:08 - 4:10I've given a lot of children's concerts
-
4:10 - 4:13for children of seven and eight years old,
-
4:13 - 4:17and whatever I play, whether it's Bach, Beethoven,
-
4:17 - 4:19even Stockhausen,
-
4:19 - 4:22or some jazzy music,
-
4:22 - 4:24they are open to hear it,
-
4:24 - 4:25really willing to listen,
-
4:25 - 4:29and they are comfortable doing so.
-
4:29 - 4:30And when classes come in
-
4:30 - 4:34with children who are just a few years older,
-
4:34 - 4:3911, 12, I felt that I sometimes already had trouble
-
4:39 - 4:41in reaching them like that.
-
4:41 - 4:44The complexity of the music does become an issue,
-
4:44 - 4:48and actually the opinions of others —
-
4:48 - 4:53parents, friends, media — they start to count.
-
4:53 - 4:55But the young ones, they don't question
-
4:55 - 4:59their own opinion.
-
4:59 - 5:02They are in this constant state of wonder,
-
5:02 - 5:05and I do firmly believe that we can keep listening
-
5:05 - 5:08like these seven-year-old children,
-
5:08 - 5:10even when growing up.
-
5:10 - 5:12And that is why I have played
-
5:12 - 5:15not only in the concert hall
-
5:15 - 5:19but also on the street, online, in the air:
-
5:19 - 5:21to feel that state of wonder,
-
5:21 - 5:24to truly listen,
-
5:24 - 5:27and to listen without prejudice.
-
5:27 - 5:29And I would like to invite you
-
5:29 - 5:32to do so now.
-
5:39 - 5:46(Music: George Frideric Handel, "Chaconne in G Major."
Performed by Daria van den Bercken.) -
9:06 - 9:12(Applause)
-
9:12 - 9:14Thank you.
-
9:14 - 9:17(Applause)

- Why I take the piano on the road … and in the air
- Speaker:
- Daria van den Bercken
- Description:
-
Pianist Daria van den Bercken fell in love with the baroque keyboard music of George Frideric Handel. Now, she aims to ignite this passion in others. In this talk, she plays us through the emotional roller coaster of his music — while sailing with her piano through the air, driving it down the street, and of course playing on the stage.
