Click Your Fortune #2: Imagined careers - John Werner
-
0:01 - 0:05What careers did you imagine for yourself when you were in grad school?
-
0:05 - 0:07When I was little, my mom said,
-
0:07 - 0:08"John K!"
-
0:08 - 0:11(My dad was Big John, I was John K.)
-
0:11 - 0:13"You'll make a great engineer."
-
0:13 - 0:14And so, for a long time, I was like,
-
0:14 - 0:15"Yeah, I'll make a great engineer."
-
0:15 - 0:17Sometimes I forgot what that word was
-
0:17 - 0:20and I'd say, "Oh, my mom believes in me,
-
0:20 - 0:21I'll be something great."
-
0:21 - 0:22But I really didn't know what an engineer was,
-
0:22 - 0:24and I never really got the memo
-
0:24 - 0:26of how to become an engineer.
-
0:26 - 0:27I didn't know any engineers.
-
0:27 - 0:28My mom and dad were both lawyers,
-
0:28 - 0:29everyone they knew were lawyers,
-
0:29 - 0:31I didn't know what an engineer was.
-
0:31 - 0:33Turns out my uncle actually was an engineer,
-
0:33 - 0:34I've learned,
-
0:34 - 0:35but he lived in Schenectady,
-
0:35 - 0:37which I didn't know where that was.
-
0:37 - 0:39I didn't spend much time with him.
-
0:39 - 0:42So, I went to high school and I graduated.
-
0:42 - 0:45I went to college and I graduated.
-
0:45 - 0:47But instead of diving into grad school,
-
0:47 - 0:50I just started being an entrepreneur.
-
0:50 - 0:52I went into education
-
0:52 - 0:54with all these other teachers
-
0:54 - 0:55and all these other clinicians
-
0:55 - 0:58and all these other MSWs, social workers.
-
0:58 - 1:00But I wasn't a clinician,
-
1:00 - 1:02I wasn't a teacher,
-
1:02 - 1:03I was an entrepreneur,
-
1:03 - 1:07and I wanted to change the next generation of schools,
-
1:07 - 1:10and I realized that by being a little different
-
1:10 - 1:11than the community,
-
1:11 - 1:13that was sort of my grad school.
-
1:13 - 1:14And so, I worked hard,
-
1:14 - 1:16I started an organization,
-
1:16 - 1:17I've grown it.
-
1:17 - 1:19You know, there are 500 people,
-
1:19 - 1:20$35 million operating budget,
-
1:20 - 1:228 U.S. states.
-
1:22 - 1:23I still didn't go to graduate school.
-
1:23 - 1:29My graduate school was running an organization.
-
1:29 - 1:32And then in 2008, when I was an old man,
-
1:32 - 1:34I went to graduate school.
-
1:34 - 1:35I got a fellowship.
-
1:35 - 1:38I became an officer of an elite university,
-
1:38 - 1:39Harvard University,
-
1:39 - 1:40and I got to take courses
-
1:40 - 1:42in every single graduate school.
-
1:42 - 1:44I took seven classes at Harvard Business School,
-
1:44 - 1:46six classes at the Graduate School of Design,
-
1:46 - 1:48a class at the School of Public Health.
-
1:48 - 1:52I went and lived in Favelas in Mexico.
-
1:52 - 1:54So, I could have gone and got an MBA
-
1:54 - 1:55right out of college,
-
1:55 - 1:56but I would have been a dime a dozen.
-
1:56 - 1:59Instead, I was one of ten mid-careers
-
1:59 - 2:00at this great university,
-
2:00 - 2:02and I was seen as an asset,
-
2:02 - 2:04not just this, a lost leader,
-
2:04 - 2:05because the graduate school needed money
-
2:05 - 2:07to pay for the graduate students.
-
2:07 - 2:10So, if I were to give some advice on career stuff,
-
2:10 - 2:13don't just dive into graduate school to get a credential
-
2:13 - 2:15because you don't know what you want to do.
-
2:15 - 2:17My brother got a perfect score on the LSATs
-
2:17 - 2:20but took a year off going to law school
-
2:20 - 2:21because he didn't know why
-
2:21 - 2:22he wanted to go to law school.
-
2:22 - 2:25So, I just dove into education,
-
2:25 - 2:26built something really special.
-
2:26 - 2:28In doing so, I built up a network
-
2:28 - 2:31that was pretty freaking tremendous.
-
2:31 - 2:33And I think in the next generation,
-
2:33 - 2:35folks should think about
-
2:35 - 2:37how they can be a connector of people
-
2:37 - 2:39from different places.
-
2:39 - 2:40And graduate school,
-
2:40 - 2:42you can go there and build a network,
-
2:42 - 2:44but build your social graph by activities
-
2:44 - 2:45and by your reputation
-
2:45 - 2:46and by collaborating.
-
2:46 - 2:49And graduate school can get in the way of that.
