This virtual lab will revolutionize science class

  • Not Synced
Today I am going to show you
    how this tablet
  • Not Synced
    and this virtual reality
    headset that I'm wearing
  • Not Synced
    is going to completely
    revolutionize science education.
  • Not Synced
And I'm also going to show you
  • Not Synced
how it can make any science teacher
    more than twice as effective.
  • Not Synced
But before I show you how
    all of this is possible,
  • Not Synced
    let's talk briefly
  • Not Synced
about why improving the quality of science
    education is so vitally important.
  • Not Synced
    If you think about it,
  • Not Synced
the world is growing incredibly fast.
  • Not Synced
    And with that growth
  • Not Synced
comes a whole list of growing challenges.
  • Not Synced
    Challenges such as dealing
    with global warming,
  • Not Synced
    solving starvation and water shortages,
  • Not Synced
    and curing diseases,
  • Not Synced
    to name just a few.
  • Not Synced
And who exactly is going to help us
solve all of these great challenges?
  • Not Synced
    Well, to [various degrees]
    it is these young students.
  • Not Synced
    This is the next generation
    of young, bright scientists
  • Not Synced
    and in many ways,
  • Not Synced
    we all rely on them
  • Not Synced
for coming up with new, great innovations
  • Not Synced
    to help us solve all
    these challenges ahead of us.
  • Not Synced
And so a couple of years back,
  • Not Synced
my cofounder and I were teaching
    university students,
  • Not Synced
    just like these,
  • Not Synced
only the students we were teaching
looked a little bit more like this here.
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
    And yes, this is really
    the reality out there
  • Not Synced
    in way too many universities
    around the world.
  • Not Synced
    Students that are bored, disengaged
  • Not Synced
and sometimes not even sure why they're
learning about a topic in the first place.
  • Not Synced
So we started looking around for new,
    innovative teaching methods,
  • Not Synced
but what we found was quite disappointing.
  • Not Synced
We saw that books were being
    turned into e-books.
  • Not Synced
    black boards were being turned
    into Youtube videos
  • Not Synced
    and lecture hall monologues
    were being turned into MOOCs;
  • Not Synced
    massive online open courses.
  • Not Synced
And if you think about it,
  • Not Synced
    all we're really doing here
    is taking the same content
  • Not Synced
    and the same format,
  • Not Synced
and bringing it out to more students.
  • Not Synced
    Which is great --
  • Not Synced
    don't get me wrong.
  • Not Synced
    That is really great,
  • Not Synced
    but the teaching method
is still more or less the same,
  • Not Synced
    no real innovation there.
  • Not Synced
    So we started looking elsewhere,
  • Not Synced
    and what we found
  • Not Synced
    was the flight simulators
had been proven over and over again
  • Not Synced
    to be far more effective
  • Not Synced
when used in combination with real,
in-flight training to train the pilots.
  • Not Synced
And so we thought to ourselves:
  • Not Synced
why not just apply that to science?
  • Not Synced
    Why not build a virtual
    laboratory simulator?
  • Not Synced
    Well, we did it.
  • Not Synced
We basically set out to create
  • Not Synced
    a fully simulated, one-to-one,
    virtual reality laboratory simulator,
  • Not Synced
    where the students
    could perform experiments
  • Not Synced
    with mathematical equations
  • Not Synced
    that would simulate what would
happen in a real world lab.
  • Not Synced
    But not just simple simulations,
  • Not Synced
we would also create advanced simulations
    with top universities like MIT,
  • Not Synced
    to bring out cutting-edge cancer
    research to these students.
  • Not Synced
    And suddenly the universities
    could save millions of dollars
  • Not Synced
    by letting the students
    perform virtual experiments
  • Not Synced
before they go into the real laboratory.
  • Not Synced
    And not only that,
  • Not Synced
now the could also understand --
  • Not Synced
    even on a molecular level
    inside the machine --
  • Not Synced
what is happening to the machines.
  • Not Synced
And then they could suddenly perform
dangerous experiments in the labs as well.
  • Not Synced
    For instance also here,
  • Not Synced
    learning about salmonella bacteria,
  • Not Synced
    which is an imporant topic
  • Not Synced
    that many school cannot teach
    for a good safety reasons.
  • Not Synced
And we of course quiz the students
  • Not Synced
    and then give the teachers
    a full dashboard,
  • Not Synced
    so they fully understand
    where the students are at.
  • Not Synced
    But we didn't stop there
  • Not Synced
because we had seen just how important
meaning is for the students' engagement
