Suli Breaks - Wish I Had Said Something
-
0:22 - 0:24*Voicemail* Hey, this is Suli.
-
0:24 - 0:25I can't pick up right now,
-
0:25 - 0:27but if you do leave your name and number,
-
0:27 - 0:28I'll call straight back.Take care of yourself.
-
0:28 - 0:30Peace.
-
0:31 - 0:32*Voicemail* Hey, Sul.
-
0:32 - 0:34I'm not really sure where you are, but I've just finished..
-
0:34 - 0:36..and I'm gonna head home now.
-
0:36 - 0:38See you later inshallah. Love you.
-
0:38 - 0:40Asalam Walekum.
-
0:50 - 0:52And the fact of the matter is.
-
0:52 - 0:54The person I wrote this for,
-
0:56 - 0:58is never even gonna hear it.
-
1:19 - 1:20And, Allah knows she's beautiful.
-
1:20 - 1:27Even though the clothes she wears make her look unusual. Hijab, and black scarf cover her face.
-
1:27 - 1:30So when they see her, they just look the other way.
-
1:30 - 1:32And she thinks will ever see the ended of this,
-
1:33 - 1:35due to prejudice, they just label me a terrorist.
-
1:36 - 1:40It's the media and the messages stereotypical
lies and images. -
1:41 - 1:42This morning the bus
-
1:42 - 1:46drove past me at full throttle. A group of kids harassed me, with a broken coke bottle.
-
1:47 - 1:49And I'm at war with my morals. The Quran says "no quarrels..
-
1:50 - 1:51Unless in self defence,
-
1:51 - 1:52but I'm stressing and I'm tense.
-
1:53 - 1:55Asking can I borrow, a day with no sorrow.
-
1:56 - 2:01I wish Judgement Day would come and take me away tomorrow.
-
2:03 - 2:05and every time I saw her I could see she
felt hollow. -
2:05 - 2:07How difficult would it have been for me to say,
-
2:08 - 2:09"Hello"
-
2:09 - 2:11she took another step into the mosque.
-
2:12 - 2:14readily embrace in her faith and what it cost.
-
2:15 - 2:19and I wish I would have said something
then. But then again I repent with the -
2:19 - 2:21end of this pen.
-
2:24 - 2:27I wish I would have said something then, but then again,
-
2:27 - 2:29I repent with the end of this pen.
-
2:29 - 2:35Repent with the end of this pen.
-
2:35 - 2:38I wish that I had told her,
-
2:38 - 2:43don't ever feel less significant because your different. You
know every time they shun you, -
2:43 - 2:46Their just highlighting their ignorance.
-
2:46 - 2:48and what idiot said
"Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder" -
2:50 - 2:52Never look for beauty in the eyes of those who behold.
-
2:52 - 2:56Because if you ask them They will say that, that chain on your neck is pure gold.
-
2:56 - 2:58Because a human being,
-
2:58 - 3:00does not know the value of your soul.
-
3:00 - 3:02They can't look past...*emotional stuttering*
-
3:04 - 3:06They can't look past the nice hair, and fancy clothes.
-
3:06 - 3:08Rihanna Fenty or Beyonce Knowles.
-
3:08 - 3:10And no disrespect to either of those.
-
3:11 - 3:13But be proud that you prefer to wear your scarf over your head,
-
3:13 - 3:15to your weave exposed.
-
3:15 - 3:17And long clothes with less than shows.
-
3:17 - 3:18Rather than the mini skirt and open toes.
-
3:18 - 3:22So don't be discouraged by the looks
that they give you on road. -
3:23 - 3:23Because you know and I know. That is doesn't make you any less than them.
-
3:33 - 3:35And I wish, I would have said something then,
-
3:37 - 3:39but then again, I repent with the end of this pen.
-
3:41 - 3:43As she took another step into the mosque.
-
3:43 - 3:46Readily embracing her faith and what it cost.
-
3:49 - 3:51And I wish I would have said something then, but then again.
-
3:51 - 3:53I repent with the end of this pen.
-
3:58 - 3:58Because I didn't,
-
3:58 - 4:00she usually got driven, on her way back from revision.
-
4:00 - 4:02Her brother was on a mission,
-
4:03 - 4:05and couldn't call her until the lights started dimming,
-
4:05 - 4:06A fatal omission.
-
4:06 - 4:08So now she's walking by herself down a dark street
-
4:08 - 4:10she hears a noise.
-
4:10 - 4:12A couple men, maybe they were boys.
-
4:12 - 4:14I can't exactly say, because the paper didn't explain.
-
4:15 - 4:17All it said was "Muslim girl racially attacked on the front page"
-
4:18 - 4:19I can't exactly say, because the paper didn't explain.
-
4:22 - 4:24All it said was "Muslim girl racially attacked and raped on the front page"
-
4:29 - 4:31As she took another step into the mosque.
-
4:31 - 4:32Readily embracing her faith and what it cost.
-
4:34 - 4:37And I wish I would have said something then, but then again.
-
4:37 - 4:41I repent with the end of this pen.
-
4:41 - 4:46I repent with the end of this pen.
- Title:
- Suli Breaks - Wish I Had Said Something
- Description:
-
This is something very personal to me.....
Dedicated to my younger sister. End Hate Crime!
With it just being Hate Crime UK awareness week, the niqab debate raging in Toronto and just last month 16 year old Tasneem Kabir being attacked in London for wearing a hijab. I couldn't think of a more poignant time to release this video.
The title is not indicative of the nature of the video at all, I deliberately avoided a "click bate" title as this is not work I created for viriality or gimmicks. As a matter of fact, this piece is as anti viral as they can be, the video is explicit and the subject matter is very sensitive.
Listen guys, I know what everyone wants to hear and how they want it to be packaged. But I have been around the world and back over the last two years. I have seen the world is not all bright colours, and smiley vlog faces. Sometimes we learn from its harshness and bitterness, so rather than create art, which people WANT to hear I have focused on what they NEED to hear.
As to the nature of the video it is not pro-religion/pro Islamic, I have no interest to promote or encourage any religious doctrines. Anisah's Song is ANTI-HATE. This story is not to promote any agenda, it is to highlight that on a daily basis people are persecuted not only for what they believe, but being who they choose to be. Hate Crime is wrong and as long as we live in a world that allows this, none of us will ever be free/safe.
After the video release is settled, we hope to release "Anisah’s song" as a single, to which a portion of the proceeds will be donated to organisations helping victims of violent hate crime.
