Suli Breaks - Wish I Had Said Something

  • 0:22 - 0:24
    *Voicemail* Hey, this is Suli.
  • 0:24 - 0:25
I can't pick up right now,
  • 0:25 - 0:27
but if you do leave your name and number,
  • 0:27 - 0:28
I'll call straight back.Take care of yourself.
  • 0:28 - 0:30
    Peace.
  • 0:31 - 0:32
    *Voicemail* Hey, Sul.
  • 0:32 - 0:34
I'm not really sure where you are, but I've just finished..
  • 0:34 - 0:36
..and I'm gonna head home now.
  • 0:36 - 0:38
See you later inshallah. Love you.
  • 0:38 - 0:40
    Asalam Walekum.
  • 0:50 - 0:52
And the fact of the matter is.
  • 0:52 - 0:54
The person I wrote this for,
  • 0:56 - 0:58
is never even gonna hear it.
  • 1:19 - 1:20
    And, Allah knows she's beautiful.
  • 1:20 - 1:27
Even though the clothes she wears make her look unusual. Hijab, and black scarf cover her face.
  • 1:27 - 1:30
So when they see her, they just look the other way.
  • 1:30 - 1:32
And she thinks will ever see the ended of this,
  • 1:33 - 1:35
due to prejudice, they just label me a terrorist.
  • 1:36 - 1:40
It's the media and the messages stereotypical
    lies and images.
  • 1:41 - 1:42
    This morning the bus
  • 1:42 - 1:46
drove past me at full throttle. A group of kids harassed me, with a broken coke bottle.
  • 1:47 - 1:49
And I'm at war with my morals. The Quran says "no quarrels..
  • 1:50 - 1:51
    Unless in self defence,
  • 1:51 - 1:52
but I'm stressing and I'm tense.
  • 1:53 - 1:55
Asking can I borrow, a day with no sorrow.
  • 1:56 - 2:01
I wish Judgement Day would come and take me away tomorrow.
  • 2:03 - 2:05
and every time I saw her I could see she
    felt hollow.
  • 2:05 - 2:07
How difficult would it have been for me to say,
  • 2:08 - 2:09
    "Hello"
  • 2:09 - 2:11
she took another step into the mosque.
  • 2:12 - 2:14
readily embrace in her faith and what it cost.
  • 2:15 - 2:19
and I wish I would have said something
then. But then again I repent with the
  • 2:19 - 2:21
    end of this pen.
  • 2:24 - 2:27
I wish I would have said something then, but then again,
  • 2:27 - 2:29
I repent with the end of this pen.
  • 2:29 - 2:35
Repent with the end of this pen.
  • 2:35 - 2:38
I wish that I had told her,
  • 2:38 - 2:43
don't ever feel less significant because your different. You
know every time they shun you,
  • 2:43 - 2:46
    Their just highlighting their ignorance.
  • 2:46 - 2:48
    and what idiot said
"Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder"
  • 2:50 - 2:52
Never look for beauty in the eyes of those who behold.
  • 2:52 - 2:56
Because if you ask them They will say that, that chain on your neck is pure gold.
  • 2:56 - 2:58
    Because a human being,
  • 2:58 - 3:00
does not know the value of your soul.
  • 3:00 - 3:02
    They can't look past...*emotional stuttering*
  • 3:04 - 3:06
They can't look past the nice hair, and fancy clothes.
  • 3:06 - 3:08
    Rihanna Fenty or Beyonce Knowles.
  • 3:08 - 3:10
And no disrespect to either of those.
  • 3:11 - 3:13
But be proud that you prefer to wear your scarf over your head,
  • 3:13 - 3:15
    to your weave exposed.
  • 3:15 - 3:17
And long clothes with less than shows.
  • 3:17 - 3:18
Rather than the mini skirt and open toes.
  • 3:18 - 3:22
So don't be discouraged by the looks
that they give you on road.
  • 3:23 - 3:23
Because you know and I know. That is doesn't make you any less than them.
  • 3:33 - 3:35
And I wish, I would have said something then,
  • 3:37 - 3:39
but then again, I repent with the end of this pen.
  • 3:41 - 3:43
As she took another step into the mosque.
  • 3:43 - 3:46
Readily embracing her faith and what it cost.
  • 3:49 - 3:51
And I wish I would have said something then, but then again.
  • 3:51 - 3:53
I repent with the end of this pen.
  • 3:58 - 3:58
    Because I didn't,
  • 3:58 - 4:00
she usually got driven, on her way back from revision.
  • 4:00 - 4:02
Her brother was on a mission,
  • 4:03 - 4:05
and couldn't call her until the lights started dimming,
  • 4:05 - 4:06
    A fatal omission.
  • 4:06 - 4:08
So now she's walking by herself down a dark street
  • 4:08 - 4:10
    she hears a noise.
  • 4:10 - 4:12
A couple men, maybe they were boys.
  • 4:12 - 4:14
I can't exactly say, because the paper didn't explain.
  • 4:15 - 4:17
All it said was "Muslim girl racially attacked on the front page"
  • 4:18 - 4:19
I can't exactly say, because the paper didn't explain.
  • 4:22 - 4:24
All it said was "Muslim girl racially attacked and raped on the front page"
  • 4:29 - 4:31
As she took another step into the mosque.
  • 4:31 - 4:32
Readily embracing her faith and what it cost.
  • 4:34 - 4:37
And I wish I would have said something then, but then again.
  • 4:37 - 4:41
I repent with the end of this pen.
  • 4:41 - 4:46
I repent with the end of this pen.
Title:
Suli Breaks - Wish I Had Said Something
Description:

This is something very personal to me.....

Dedicated to my younger sister. End Hate Crime!

With it just being Hate Crime UK awareness week, the niqab debate raging in Toronto and just last month 16 year old Tasneem Kabir being attacked in London for wearing a hijab. I couldn't think of a more poignant time to release this video.

The title is not indicative of the nature of the video at all, I deliberately avoided a "click bate" title as this is not work I created for viriality or gimmicks. As a matter of fact, this piece is as anti viral as they can be, the video is explicit and the subject matter is very sensitive.

Listen guys, I know what everyone wants to hear and how they want it to be packaged. But I have been around the world and back over the last two years. I have seen the world is not all bright colours, and smiley vlog faces. Sometimes we learn from its harshness and bitterness, so rather than create art, which people WANT to hear I have focused on what they NEED to hear.

As to the nature of the video it is not pro-religion/pro Islamic, I have no interest to promote or encourage any religious doctrines. Anisah's Song is ANTI-HATE. This story is not to promote any agenda, it is to highlight that on a daily basis people are persecuted not only for what they believe, but being who they choose to be. Hate Crime is wrong and as long as we live in a world that allows this, none of us will ever be free/safe.

After the video release is settled, we hope to release "Anisah’s song" as a single, to which a portion of the proceeds will be donated to organisations helping victims of violent hate crime.
