Denice Frohman - "Dear Straight People" (WOWPS 2013)
-
0:09 - 0:13Dear Straight People,
-
0:13 - 0:16Who do you think you are?
-
0:16 - 0:18Do you have to make it so obvious that I make you uncomfortable?
-
0:18 - 0:19Why do I make you uncomfortable?
-
0:19 - 0:21D'you know that makes me uncomfortable?
-
0:21 - 0:24Now we're both uncomfortable.
-
0:24 - 0:25Dear Straight People,
-
0:25 - 0:27You're the reason we stay in the closet.
-
0:27 - 0:29You're the reason we even have a closet.
-
0:29 - 0:31I don't like closets,
-
0:31 - 0:33but you made the living room an unshared space
-
0:33 - 0:36and I'm feeling like a guest in my own house.
-
0:36 - 0:37Dear Straight People,
-
0:37 - 0:39sexuality and gender?
-
0:39 - 0:42Two different things.
-
0:42 - 0:44Combined in many different ways.
-
0:44 - 0:46if you mismatch your socks, you understand.
-
0:46 - 0:48Dear Hip Hop,
-
0:48 - 0:50Why're you fascinated with discovering gay rappers?
-
0:50 - 0:51Gay people rap.
-
0:51 - 0:54Just like gay people ride bikes and eat soul food.
-
0:54 - 0:55Dear Straight People,
-
0:55 - 0:57I don't think god has a sexual orientation
-
0:57 - 1:00but if she were straight, she'd be a dope ally.
-
1:00 - 1:04Why else would she invent rainbows?
-
1:04 - 1:06Dear Straight Women,
-
1:06 - 1:11I mean, "straight women".
-
1:11 - 1:15LEAVE ME THE FUCK ALONE.
-
1:15 - 1:16Dear Straight Men,
-
1:16 - 1:17If I'm flirting with you,
-
1:17 - 1:18it's cuz I think it's funny, just laugh.
-
1:18 - 1:20Dear Straight People,
-
1:20 - 1:22I'm tired of proving that my love is authentic,
-
1:22 - 1:24so I'm callin' for reparations on your ass.
-
1:24 - 1:25When did you realize you were straight?
-
1:25 - 1:26Who taught you?
-
1:26 - 1:28Did it happen because your parents are divorced?
-
1:28 - 1:29Did it happen because your parents are not divorced?
-
1:29 - 1:32Did it happen because you sniffed too much glue in 5th grade?
-
1:32 - 1:33Dear Straight People,
-
1:33 - 1:35Why do I have to prove my love is authentic?
-
1:35 - 1:36Why do I have to prove my love is authentic?
-
1:36 - 1:38Why do I have to prove my love is authentic?
-
1:38 - 1:42Why do you have to stare at me when I'm holding my girlfriends' hand like I'm about to rob you?
-
1:42 - 1:43Dear Straight People,
-
1:43 - 1:46you make me wanna fuckin' rob you.
-
1:46 - 1:48Dear Straight Allies,
-
1:48 - 1:49Thank you.
-
1:49 - 1:50More, please.
-
1:50 - 1:51Dear Straight Bullies,
-
1:51 - 1:53You're right, we don't have the same values.
-
1:53 - 1:55You kill everything that's different.
-
1:55 - 1:56I preserve it.
-
1:56 - 1:59Tell me, what happened to Jose Mengado, Tsekiah Gunn, Lawrence King [SPELLING]
-
1:59 - 2:02What happened to the souls alienated between too many high school walls,
-
2:02 - 2:05who planned the angles of their deaths in math class.
-
2:05 - 2:07Who imagined their funerals as tickertape parades,
-
2:07 - 2:10who thought the afterlife was more like and after party.
-
2:10 - 2:15Did you notice that hate is alive and well in too many lunchrooms?
-
2:15 - 2:17Taught in the silence of too many teachers.
-
2:17 - 2:21Passed down like second hand clothing from too many parents.
-
2:21 - 2:24Dear Queer Young Girl,
-
2:24 - 2:25I see you.
-
2:25 - 2:28You don't want them to see you,
-
2:28 - 2:31so you change the pronouns in your love poems to "him" instead of "her".
-
2:31 - 2:33I used to do that.
-
2:33 - 2:34Dear Straight People,
-
2:34 - 2:37You make young poets make bad edits.
-
2:37 - 2:38Dear Straight People,
-
2:38 - 2:39Kissing my girlfriend in public
-
2:39 - 2:42without looking to see who's around
-
2:42 - 2:44is a luxury I do not fully have yet,
-
2:44 - 2:46but tonight I am drunk in my freedom,
-
2:46 - 2:49grab her hand on the busiest street corner in Philadelphia,
-
2:49 - 2:51zip my fingers into hers and press our lips firmly,
-
2:51 - 2:54until we melt their stares into a standing ovation,
-
2:54 - 2:58imagine that we are in a sea of smiling faces,
-
2:58 - 2:59even when we're not
-
2:59 - 3:00and when we're not
-
3:00 - 3:02we start shoveling,
-
3:02 - 3:04digging deep into each other's eyes we say,
-
3:04 - 3:06"Hey, baby, can't nothing stop this tonight"
-
3:06 - 3:09because tonight, this world is broken and we're the only thing
-
3:09 - 3:19that's going to keep it together.
