Denice Frohman - "Dear Straight People" (WOWPS 2013)

  • 0:09 - 0:13
    Dear Straight People,
  • 0:13 - 0:16
Who do you think you are?
  • 0:16 - 0:18
Do you have to make it so obvious that I make you uncomfortable?
  • 0:18 - 0:19
Why do I make you uncomfortable?
  • 0:19 - 0:21
D'you know that makes me uncomfortable?
  • 0:21 - 0:24
    Now we're both uncomfortable.
  • 0:24 - 0:25
    Dear Straight People,
  • 0:25 - 0:27
You're the reason we stay in the closet.
  • 0:27 - 0:29
You're the reason we even have a closet.
  • 0:29 - 0:31
    I don't like closets,
  • 0:31 - 0:33
but you made the living room an unshared space
  • 0:33 - 0:36
and I'm feeling like a guest in my own house.
  • 0:36 - 0:37
    Dear Straight People,
  • 0:37 - 0:39
    sexuality and gender?
  • 0:39 - 0:42
    Two different things.
  • 0:42 - 0:44
    Combined in many different ways.
  • 0:44 - 0:46
if you mismatch your socks, you understand.
  • 0:46 - 0:48
    Dear Hip Hop,
  • 0:48 - 0:50
Why're you fascinated with discovering gay rappers?
  • 0:50 - 0:51
    Gay people rap.
  • 0:51 - 0:54
Just like gay people ride bikes and eat soul food.
  • 0:54 - 0:55
    Dear Straight People,
  • 0:55 - 0:57
I don't think god has a sexual orientation
  • 0:57 - 1:00
but if she were straight, she'd be a dope ally.
  • 1:00 - 1:04
Why else would she invent rainbows?
  • 1:04 - 1:06
    Dear Straight Women,
  • 1:06 - 1:11
    I mean, "straight women".
  • 1:11 - 1:15
    LEAVE ME THE FUCK ALONE.
  • 1:15 - 1:16
    Dear Straight Men,
  • 1:16 - 1:17
    If I'm flirting with you,
  • 1:17 - 1:18
it's cuz I think it's funny, just laugh.
  • 1:18 - 1:20
    Dear Straight People,
  • 1:20 - 1:22
I'm tired of proving that my love is authentic,
  • 1:22 - 1:24
so I'm callin' for reparations on your ass.
  • 1:24 - 1:25
When did you realize you were straight?
  • 1:25 - 1:26
    Who taught you?
  • 1:26 - 1:28
Did it happen because your parents are divorced?
  • 1:28 - 1:29
Did it happen because your parents are not divorced?
  • 1:29 - 1:32
Did it happen because you sniffed too much glue in 5th grade?
  • 1:32 - 1:33
    Dear Straight People,
  • 1:33 - 1:35
Why do I have to prove my love is authentic?
  • 1:35 - 1:36
Why do I have to prove my love is authentic?
  • 1:36 - 1:38
Why do I have to prove my love is authentic?
  • 1:38 - 1:42
Why do you have to stare at me when I'm holding my girlfriends' hand like I'm about to rob you?
  • 1:42 - 1:43
    Dear Straight People,
  • 1:43 - 1:46
you make me wanna fuckin' rob you.
  • 1:46 - 1:48
    Dear Straight Allies,
  • 1:48 - 1:49
    Thank you.
  • 1:49 - 1:50
    More, please.
  • 1:50 - 1:51
    Dear Straight Bullies,
  • 1:51 - 1:53
You're right, we don't have the same values.
  • 1:53 - 1:55
    You kill everything that's different.
  • 1:55 - 1:56
    I preserve it.
  • 1:56 - 1:59
Tell me, what happened to Jose Mengado, Tsekiah Gunn, Lawrence King [SPELLING]
  • 1:59 - 2:02
What happened to the souls alienated between too many high school walls,
  • 2:02 - 2:05
who planned the angles of their deaths in math class.
  • 2:05 - 2:07
Who imagined their funerals as tickertape parades,
  • 2:07 - 2:10
who thought the afterlife was more like and after party.
  • 2:10 - 2:15
Did you notice that hate is alive and well in too many lunchrooms?
  • 2:15 - 2:17
Taught in the silence of too many teachers.
  • 2:17 - 2:21
Passed down like second hand clothing from too many parents.
  • 2:21 - 2:24
    Dear Queer Young Girl,
  • 2:24 - 2:25
    I see you.
  • 2:25 - 2:28
You don't want them to see you,
  • 2:28 - 2:31
so you change the pronouns in your love poems to "him" instead of "her".
  • 2:31 - 2:33
    I used to do that.
  • 2:33 - 2:34
    Dear Straight People,
  • 2:34 - 2:37
You make young poets make bad edits.
  • 2:37 - 2:38
    Dear Straight People,
  • 2:38 - 2:39
    Kissing my girlfriend in public
  • 2:39 - 2:42
without looking to see who's around
  • 2:42 - 2:44
is a luxury I do not fully have yet,
  • 2:44 - 2:46
but tonight I am drunk in my freedom,
  • 2:46 - 2:49
grab her hand on the busiest street corner in Philadelphia,
  • 2:49 - 2:51
zip my fingers into hers and press our lips firmly,
  • 2:51 - 2:54
until we melt their stares into a standing ovation,
  • 2:54 - 2:58
imagine that we are in a sea of smiling faces,
  • 2:58 - 2:59
    even when we're not
  • 2:59 - 3:00
    and when we're not
  • 3:00 - 3:02
    we start shoveling,
  • 3:02 - 3:04
digging deep into each other's eyes we say,
  • 3:04 - 3:06
"Hey, baby, can't nothing stop this tonight"
  • 3:06 - 3:09
because tonight, this world is broken and we're the only thing
  • 3:09 - 3:19
that's going to keep it together.
