Not Synced
Picture this,
-
Not Synced
it's Monday morning,
-
Not Synced
you're at the office,
-
Not Synced
you're settling in for the day at work,
-
Not Synced
and this guy,
-
Not Synced
that you sort of recognize from down the hall,
-
Not Synced
walks right into your cubicle
-
Not Synced
and he steals your chair.
-
Not Synced
Doesn't say a word--
-
Not Synced
just rolls away with it.
-
Not Synced
Doesn't give you any information
-
Not Synced
about why he took your chair
-
Not Synced
out of all the other chairs
that are out there.
-
Not Synced
Doesn't acknowledge the fact that you
-
Not Synced
might need your chair
-
Not Synced
to get some work done today.
-
Not Synced
You wouldn't stand for it.
-
Not Synced
You'd make a stink.
-
Not Synced
You'd follow that guy
back to his cubicle
-
Not Synced
and say, "why my chair?"
-
Not Synced
Okay, so now it's Tuesday
morning at the office,
-
Not Synced
and a meeting invitation pops
up in your calendar.
-
Not Synced
(Laughter)
-
Not Synced
And it's from this woman
-
Not Synced
that you kind of know from down the hall,
-
Not Synced
and it references some project
-
Not Synced
that you heard a little bit about.
-
Not Synced
But there's no agenda.
-
Not Synced
There's no information about
-
Not Synced
why you were invited to the meeting.
-
Not Synced
And yet you accept the meeting invitation
-
Not Synced
and you go.
-
Not Synced
And when this highly
unproductive session is over,
-
Not Synced
you go back to your desk,
-
Not Synced
and you stand at your desk
-
Not Synced
and you say,
-
Not Synced
"Boy, I wish I had those two hours back,
-
Not Synced
like I wish I had my chair back."
-
Not Synced
(Laughter)
-
Not Synced
Everyday,
-
Not Synced
we allow our co-workers,
-
Not Synced
who are otherwise very nice people,
-
Not Synced
to steal from us.
-
Not Synced
And I'm talking about something
-
Not Synced
far more valuable than office furniture.
-
Not Synced
I'm talking about time.
-
Not Synced
Your time.
-
Not Synced
In fact, I believe that we are
-
Not Synced
in the middle of a global epidemic,
-
Not Synced
a terrible new illness known as, MAS:
-
Not Synced
Mindless Accept Syndrome.
-
Not Synced
(Laughter)
-
Not Synced
The primary symptom of Mindless Accept Syndrome
[An involuntary reflex in which a person accepts]
-
Not Synced
is just accepting a meeting invitation
[a meeting invitation without]
-
Not Synced
the minute it pops up in your calendar.
[even thinking why]
-
Not Synced
[A common illness among
office workers worldwide].
-
Not Synced
It's an involuntary reflex--
-
Not Synced
ding, click, bing--
-
Not Synced
it's in your calendar,
-
Not Synced
"I gotta go, I'm already late for a meeting."
-
Not Synced
(Laughter0
-
Not Synced
Meetings are important, right?
-
Not Synced
And collaboration is key
-
Not Synced
to the success of any enterprise.
-
Not Synced
And a well-run meeting
-
Not Synced
can yield really positive,
actionable results.
-
Not Synced
But between globalization,
-
Not Synced
and pervasive information technology,
-
Not Synced
The way that we work
-
Not Synced
has really changed dramatically
over the last few years.
-
Not Synced
And we're miserable.
-
Not Synced
And we're miserable not because
-
Not Synced
the other guy can't run a good meeting,
-
Not Synced
it's because of MAS,
-
Not Synced
our Mindless Accept Syndrome,
-
Not Synced
which is a self-inflicted wound.
-
Not Synced
Actually,
-
Not Synced
I have evidence to prove
-
Not Synced
that MAS is a global epidemic.
-
Not Synced
Let me tell you why,
-
Not Synced
year ago, I put a video on Youtube,
-
Not Synced
and in the video,
-
Not Synced
I acted out every terrible
conference call
-
Not Synced
you've ever been on.
-
Not Synced
It was on for about five minutes
-
Not Synced
and it has all the things
-
Not Synced
that we hate about
really bad meetings.
-
Not Synced
There's the moderator
-
Not Synced
who has no idea how to
run the meeting.
-
Not Synced
There are the participants
-
Not Synced
who have no idea why they're there.
-
Not Synced
The whole thing kind of collapses
-
Not Synced
into this collaborative train wreck.
-
Not Synced
And everybody leaves very angry.
-
Not Synced
It's kinda funny.
-
Not Synced
(Laughter)
-
Not Synced
Let's take a quick look:
-
Not Synced
[Our goal today is to come to agreement
-
Not Synced
on a very important proposal.
-
Not Synced
As a group, we need to decide if
-
Not Synced
--bloop bloop--
-
Not Synced
Hi, we just joined.
-
Not Synced
Hi, it's Joe.
-
Not Synced
I'm working from home today.
-
Not Synced
Hi, Joe. Thanks for joining us.
-
Not Synced
(unclear)
-
Not Synced
I was just saying,
-
Not Synced
we have a lot of people on the call
-
Not Synced
who'd like to get through,
-
Not Synced
so let's skip the roll call
-
Not Synced
and I'm gonna dive right in.
-
Not Synced
Our goal today is to come
to an agreement
-
Not Synced
on a very important proposal.
-
Not Synced
As a group, need to decide if
-
Not Synced
--bloop bloop--
-
Not Synced
Hi, who just joined?
-
Not Synced
No?
-
Not Synced
I thought I heard a beep].
-
Not Synced
Sound familiar?
-
Not Synced
Yeah, it sounds familiar
to me, too.
-
Not Synced
A couple weeks after I put that online,
-
Not Synced
500,000 people,
-
Not Synced
in dozens of countries,
-
Not Synced
and I mean dozens of countries,
-
Not Synced
watched this video.
-
Not Synced
Three years later,
-
Not Synced
it's still getting thousands of views every month.
-
Not Synced
It's close to about a million right now.
-
Not Synced
And in fact,
-
Not Synced
some of the biggest companies in the world,
-
Not Synced
companies that you've heard of
-
Not Synced
but I won't name,
-
Not Synced
have asked for my permission
to use this video
-
Not Synced
In their new-hire training
-
Not Synced
to teach their employees how
not to run a meeting.
-
Not Synced
And if the numbers there,
-
Not Synced
there are a million views
-
Not Synced
and is being used by all these companies,
-
Not Synced
isn't enough proof
-
Not Synced
that we have a global
problem with meetings,
-
Not Synced
there are the many, many thousands
-
Not Synced
of comments posted online
-
Not Synced
after the video went up.
-
Not Synced
Thousands of people wrote things like,
-
Not Synced
"OMG, that was my day today!"
-
Not Synced
That was my day everyday!
-
Not Synced
This is my life.
-
Not Synced
One guy wrote,
-
Not Synced
"It's funny because it's true.
-
Not Synced
Eerily, sadly, depressingly true.
-
Not Synced
It made me laugh until I cried.
-
Not Synced
And cried.
-
Not Synced
And cried some more."
-
Not Synced
[Brilliant].
-
Not Synced
This poor guy said,
-
Not Synced
"My daily life until I reach retirement
-
Not Synced
or death,
-
Not Synced
sigh ."
-
Not Synced
These are real quotes
-
Not Synced
and it's real sad.
-
Not Synced
A common theme running
-
Not Synced
through all of these comments online
-
Not Synced
is this fundamental belief
-
Not Synced
that we are powerless
-
Not Synced
to do anything other than go to meetings
-
Not Synced
and suffer through these
poorly run meetings
-
Not Synced
and live to meet another day.
-
Not Synced
But the truth is,
-
Not Synced
we're not powerless at all.
-
Not Synced
In fact, the cure for MAS
-
Not Synced
is right here in our hands,
-
Not Synced
it's right at our finger tips, literally.
-
Not Synced
It's something that I call "No MAS".
-
Not Synced
(Laughter)
-
Not Synced
Which, if I remember from my
high school spanish,
-
Not Synced
means, "enough already,
-
Not Synced
make it stop!"
-
Not Synced
Here's how No MAS works,
-
Not Synced
it's very simple, okay?
-
Not Synced
First of all,
-
Not Synced
the next time you get a
meeting invitation
-
Not Synced
that doesn't have a lot of information
-
Not Synced
in it at all,
-
Not Synced
click the tentative button!
-
Not Synced
It's okay, you're allowed,
-
Not Synced
that's why it's there.
-
Not Synced
It's right next to the accept button,
-
Not Synced
or the maybe button or whatever
button is there for you
-
Not Synced
not to accept immediately.
-
Not Synced
Get in touch with the person who
asked you to the meeting,
-
Not Synced
tell them you're very excited
to support their work,
-
Not Synced
ask them what the goal
of the meeting is,
-
Not Synced
tell them you're interested
-
Not Synced
in helping them achieve their goal.
-
Not Synced
And if we do this often enough,
-
Not Synced
and we do it respectfully,
-
Not Synced
people might start to be
-
Not Synced
a little more thoughtful
-
Not Synced
about how they put together
meeting invitations.
-
Not Synced
And you can make more
thoughtful decisions
-
Not Synced
without accepting it.
-
Not Synced
People might actually start
-
Not Synced
sending out agendas, imagine?
-
Not Synced
Or they might not have a conference call
-
Not Synced
with 12 people to talk about a status
-
Not Synced
when they could just do a
quick email and get it done.
-
Not Synced
People may just start to change
-
Not Synced
their behavior because you changed yours.
-
Not Synced
And they just might
-
Not Synced
bring your chair back, too.
-
Not Synced
No MAS!
-
Not Synced
Thank you.
-
Not Synced
(Applause).
