Mutiara Dalam Noken

  • 0:02 - 0:11
My colleagues used to tell me about
    flying with helicopters, they're frightened
of bad weather and other things.
  • 0:11 - 0:14
But I'm motivated to do it and feel
    the challenge.
  • 0:17 - 0:22
Way before I returned to Papua, I had a
    dream,
  • 0:23 - 0:27
that some day I would become a doctor
who flies all over to remote areas.
  • 0:27 - 0:29
    And that dream came true.
  • 0:29 - 0:32
    PEARL IN THE NOKEN
  • 0:46 - 0:50
I joined the Baliem Mission Centre (BMC)
  • 0:50 - 0:53
In the organizational structure, I'm the
    medical manager.
  • 0:53 - 0:58
    We have a bimonthly schedule.
  • 0:58 - 1:05
We visit some areas that are already under
BMC's purview and try to expand to another.
  • 1:06 - 1:07
    First, we go North,
  • 1:08 - 1:09
    to the Kaimana area.
  • 1:10 - 1:12
    There, we'll find Esrotnaba lake.
  • 1:12 - 1:18
It's the center for our services. And
second, to the South, the Korowai area.
  • 1:21 - 1:24
We have strong connections with Helivida.
  • 1:24 - 1:30
Helivida is an organization that serves
and helps all of Papua's remote areas.
  • 1:35 - 1:40
In one of my trips, I flew with a Helivida
    pilot, Pilot Erwin.
  • 1:40 - 1:43
We were flying at around 12 noon,
  • 1:43 - 1:46
because there was an emergency medivac
(Medical Evacuation) mission to one of the
    small villages,
  • 1:46 - 1:50
near the border of Oksibil and Boven Digul.
  • 1:50 - 1:53
It's about 2 hours and 20 minutes from
    Wamena.
  • 1:54 - 2:06
And the trip to Boven Digul requires
passing a mountainous area near Kurima,
Iberoma, Tama, and there are strong winds.
  • 2:06 - 2:12
Suddenly, many clouds blew in and covered
the mountains, so we couldn't see anything,
  • 2:12 - 2:15
and we couldn't fly any higher.
  • 2:15 - 2:22
So we followed the river of Baliem, followed
it up. But it was raining heavily.
  • 2:23 - 2:28
I stayed quiet. Then the pilot said,
  • 2:28 - 2:35
"Doctor Mia, please do not worry because
we need to thank God for giving us this
    heavy rain.
  • 2:35 - 2:39
That means I don't have to clean this
    chopper anymore,
  • 2:39 - 2:42
because God is cleaning it from heaven".
  • 2:42 - 2:45
    Yes, immediately my stress disappeared.
  • 3:17 - 3:25
Everyday, I'm working at the hospital and
if suddenly there's a medivac calling from
    Helivida,
  • 3:25 - 3:27
I have to be on stand-by.
  • 3:27 - 3:33
And at any time, whether it's good
weather, or bad, if there's a medivac
    calling,
  • 3:33 - 3:38
if there's a pilot ready, I need to get
ready to fly to evacuate patients.
  • 3:39 - 3:40
    Mum, here mum.
  • 3:45 - 3:47
    He and I were nurses,
  • 3:49 - 3:51
    who helped patients,
  • 3:54 - 3:55
    up in remote areas.
  • 4:02 - 4:06
    Even in the remote areas,
  • 4:06 - 4:09
where people are afraid to enter.
  • 4:09 - 4:11
    But he and I,
  • 4:11 - 4:14
we have given our all to serve
    these people.
  • 4:20 - 4:24
I get my spirit from my parents.
  • 4:25 - 4:37
Ever since I was a child, there was always
a request for my father at my house to
    conduct operations
  • 4:37 - 4:41
He had to travel from night until morning,
    often without rest.
  • 4:42 - 4:52
If there was a patient who needed an
operation, and the doctor called, he needed
    to leave to help assist.
  • 4:52 - 5:00
    Besides these complicated operations,
there was often a medivac from the MAF
    (Mission Aviation Fellowship).
  • 5:00 - 5:04
He went straight away and left us for days.
  • 5:04 - 5:12
    So here's a community, they've gathered
so I can conduct an examination.
  • 5:12 - 5:15
    I've given them basic immunisation.
  • 5:15 - 5:17
    I stayed and worked there.
  • 5:17 - 5:20
This is the local medical centre where
    I worked for them.
  • 5:20 - 5:23
It's from the old days, so only black and
    white, not colour like mine.
  • 5:35 - 5:40
There was a journey from Karumbaga
    to Bokondini. That's far.
  • 5:40 - 5:41
    It's quite far.
  • 5:44 - 5:48
So we needed to put Mia inside of a noken
(a cloth to carry a child).
  • 5:48 - 5:50
Because she was still so small.
  • 5:51 - 5:52
    If she was thirsty,
  • 5:52 - 5:56
I needed to put her down and feed her
    some milk,
  • 5:56 - 5:58
    and then continue to walk.
  • 6:18 - 6:23
We put her in a noken, and we climbed
    a mountain.
  • 6:23 - 6:28
It was hard to carry her on the shoulder.
  • 6:28 - 6:32
To climb, it's difficult. And the path was
    covered by trees.
  • 6:32 - 6:35
So many trees hit our heads, and many
    other things.
  • 6:35 - 6:37
    So we couldn't move fast.
  • 6:37 - 6:41
But with the Noken, we can walk fast.
  • 6:42 - 6:49
Even when we climb up a mountain, we can
hold on to a root. Easy, right?
  • 7:00 - 7:05
I have an story from when I was working in
Wamena in 2009, and began to work in the
    Emergency Hospital there.
  • 7:06 - 7:08
Suddenly a fight occurred between some
    tribes.
  • 7:08 - 7:13
And many of these victims were carried to
    the Emergency Hospital in Wamena.
  • 7:13 - 7:19
A senior nurse came and just touched my
    head like this.
  • 7:20 - 7:23
Yes, I understood what it meant.
  • 7:23 - 7:28
She just held and touched my head like this.
It means that she has once carried me in
    her Noken.
  • 7:28 - 7:32
And that her head had once carried me.
  • 7:44 - 7:53
I need to return all the kindness that's
been given to me by my sisters and
brothers, who I call the hands of God.
  • 7:53 - 7:55
    Money will never be enough.
  • 7:56 - 8:05
I must return all the kindness and love
    that they've given to me.
  • 8:05 - 8:11
I'm giving it back to all the people I've
    ever treated.
  • 8:11 - 8:16
I don't have any passion to start my own
    medical business,
  • 8:16 - 8:20
to make money from my patients,
  • 8:20 - 8:22
just to take care of my own welfare.
    No!
  • 8:23 - 8:28
For me, a doctor is a healer.
    That's all.
