Music and emotion through time

  • Not Synced
Well when I was asked to do this TEDTalk, I was really chuckled,
  • Not Synced
because, you see, my father's name was Ted,
  • Not Synced
and much of my life, especially my musical life,
  • Not Synced
is really a talk that I'm still having with him,
  • Not Synced
or the part of me that he continues to be.
  • Not Synced
Now Ted was a New Yorker, an all-around theater guy,
  • Not Synced
and he was a self-taught illustrator and musician.
  • Not Synced
    He didn't read a note,
  • Not Synced
and he was profoundly hearing impaired.
  • Not Synced
Yet, he was my greatest teacher.
  • Not Synced
Because even through the squeaks of his hearing aids,
  • Not Synced
his understanding of music was profound.
  • Not Synced
And for him, it wasn't so much the way the music goes
  • Not Synced
as about what it witnesses and where it can take you.
  • Not Synced
And he did a painting of this experience,
  • Not Synced
which he called "In the Realm of Music."
  • Not Synced
Now Ted entered this realm every day improvising
  • Not Synced
in a sort of tin pan alley style like this.
  • Not Synced
    (Music)
  • Not Synced
But he was tough when it came to music.
  • Not Synced
He said, "There are only two things that matter in music:
  • Not Synced
    what and how.
  • Not Synced
And the thing about classical music,
  • Not Synced
that what and how, it's inexhaustible."
  • Not Synced
That was his passion for the music.
  • Not Synced
Both my parents really loved it.
  • Not Synced
They didn't know all that much about it,
  • Not Synced
but they gave me the opportunity to discover it
  • Not Synced
    together with them.
  • Not Synced
And I think inspired by that memory,
  • Not Synced
it's been my desire to try and bring it
  • Not Synced
to as many other people as I can,
  • Not Synced
sort of pass it on through whatever means.
  • Not Synced
And how people get this music, how it comes into their lives,
  • Not Synced
    really fascinates me.
  • Not Synced
One day in New York, I was on the street
  • Not Synced
and I saw some kids playing baseball between stoops and cars and fire hydrants.
  • Not Synced
And a kind of slouchy kid got up to bat,
  • Not Synced
and he took a swing and really connected.
  • Not Synced
And he watched the ball fly for a second,
  • Not Synced
and then he went, "Dah dadaratatatah.
  • Not Synced
    Brah dada dadadadah."
  • Not Synced
And he ran around the bases.
  • Not Synced
    And I thought, go figure.
  • Not Synced
How did this piece of 18th century Austrian aristocratic entertainment
  • Not Synced
turn into the victory crow of this New York kid?
