Art, criativity, reality and the meaning of life | Marcos Amaro | TEDxItaimBibi
-
0:09 - 0:10Hi, everybody.
-
0:10 - 0:14My name is Marcos Amaro and I'm an artist.
-
0:14 - 0:16First of all,
-
0:16 - 0:20I'd like to thank you for this opportunity
to talk about my own trajectory -
0:20 - 0:25and to talk about art
and the proposed subject as well, -
0:25 - 0:27which is creative idleness.
-
0:27 - 0:31I'd like to start from here. First: art.
-
0:31 - 0:36Art is a very broad concept,
almost unnameable. -
0:36 - 0:39So, when I'm referring
to myself as an artist, -
0:39 - 0:43I'm trying to get close
to a broader concept, -
0:43 - 0:49less stereotyped and less
labeled, about myself. -
0:49 - 0:56Most of the time, what an artist does
is to deconstruct things, -
0:56 - 1:00so that he can give a new
meaning to his own history -
1:00 - 1:04and, consequently, to his surroundings.
-
1:04 - 1:08First, I don't think
it is "creative idleness." -
1:08 - 1:11Why do I think this?
-
1:11 - 1:15Because I believe there's
a lot of work in creativity. -
1:15 - 1:20I believe those who live from creativity,
those who try to live from creativity, -
1:20 - 1:25must think a lot
about their own relationships -
1:25 - 1:27and about relationships
-
1:27 - 1:31that people and the artist himself
establish with world. -
1:31 - 1:36So, creativity is a phenomenon
which comes from a lot of work -
1:36 - 1:41and from deep understanding
about oneself and world. -
1:41 - 1:46In recent years, I particularly adopted
a posture of deconstructing my history -
1:46 - 1:49in order to give it a new
meaning in another way. -
1:49 - 1:52How so? By searching
more sense to my life. -
1:52 - 1:57I think that, above joy, sadness
or even happiness, there is sense, -
1:57 - 2:03and I think that sense - at least for me -
is more important than any state of mind. -
2:03 - 2:10I believe the so-called "states of mind"
are results of pshyquical processes -
2:10 - 2:14and we can choose if we are
going to experience them or not. -
2:14 - 2:17These processes are very individual,
-
2:18 - 2:23according to our understanding
and comprehension about what is real. -
2:23 - 2:26I mean, we invent the real all the time.
-
2:26 - 2:30We look for a sense through the real
-
2:30 - 2:34making relations, as I said,
about life and ourselves. -
2:34 - 2:38That is creativity.
Its consequence is art. -
2:38 - 2:42Art is when we manifest,
through our expression, -
2:42 - 2:45- that's what I'm doing
right at this moment - -
2:45 - 2:49deep feelings and thoughts
about ourselves, -
2:49 - 2:53which will make me,
shortly after recording this video, -
2:53 - 2:58watch it again, so that I can
understand in my unconscious state -
2:58 - 3:00what I am saying now.
-
3:00 - 3:04So, looking for a sense
in our unconscious, -
3:04 - 3:10trying to ruminate our history,
- in the sense of reviewing, revisiting - -
3:10 - 3:15with the aim of bringing it to the present
and, therefore, giving it a meaning, -
3:15 - 3:17is the artist's goal.
-
3:17 - 3:22In my particular case,
I try to do this through debris, -
3:22 - 3:24not only debris of my memory,
-
3:24 - 3:29but also the debris I work with, and I try
to give them a new meaning in another way, -
3:29 - 3:31creating, as I said, sense to my life.
-
3:31 - 3:34So, I belive that such creative
idleness does not exist. -
3:34 - 3:37There is deep and creative
work about oneself -
3:37 - 3:42that makes us, maybe, understand
a bit more about reality, -
3:42 - 3:43about our own surroundings,
-
3:43 - 3:47so that we can dilate
such concepts in ourselves -
3:47 - 3:52making us, maybe, more generous
not only regarding our own condition -
3:52 - 3:53but also our neighbor's.
-
3:53 - 4:00So, the challenge I am currently pursuing
in my life is to understand my neighbor -
4:00 - 4:06beyond the projections and images
that I make of this neighbor. -
4:06 - 4:08This is a deep and difficult exercise
-
4:08 - 4:12since we are necessarily
linked to our history -
4:12 - 4:14and we are made of memory and sensation.
-
4:14 - 4:16So, how can we do this?
-
4:17 - 4:20Not by appealing
to an event of faith or belief -
4:20 - 4:21- which is a very common thing -
-
4:21 - 4:27neither trying to rely
on ideology nor on religion -
4:27 - 4:30but rather trying to rely on yourself,
-
4:30 - 4:34undoing any illusions concerning the real.
-
4:34 - 4:39So, what I'm chasing today in my life
is not only to deconstruct myself -
4:39 - 4:43but everything around me
so that I can see the real thing. -
4:43 - 4:46And the real thing is very clear:
we all are going to die -
4:46 - 4:49and we all need to prepare
ourselves for death. -
4:49 - 4:53And preparing for death has to do
with creating sense in our lives, -
4:53 - 4:55creating sense to our surroundings
-
4:55 - 5:00so that we can live sophisticated
and complex states of spirit. -
5:00 - 5:02This is my concept of intelligence:
-
5:02 - 5:07trying to live complex, altered
and sophisticated states of spirit, -
5:07 - 5:12without appealing to any externality,
-
5:12 - 5:15like, for example,
drugs or things like these, -
5:15 - 5:20but searching within yourself
this potential to live with intention -
5:20 - 5:22and intensity what we want
-
5:22 - 5:26according to our intention,
according to our way of being, -
5:26 - 5:28which is what I call ethics.
-
5:28 - 5:30So, being ethic, under my view,
-
5:30 - 5:34is to live according our understanding
about what is real and, of course, -
5:34 - 5:37becoming responsible
for the things we do in the world. -
5:37 - 5:40Nobody must answer for our things.
-
5:40 - 5:46Only we choose and opt and, therefore,
we become responsible for our destiny. -
5:46 - 5:49This is what I call freedom.
-
5:49 - 5:51I want to register this talk here
-
5:51 - 5:56not only for you guys but also for myself
to ponder, above all, what I've just said. -
5:56 - 6:01I put these things in continuous question
and deconstruction not only about myself, -
6:01 - 6:07but regarding these words
I've just professed. -
6:07 - 6:10I deeply thank you all for your time
-
6:10 - 6:15and I am open and available
to answer any questions, -
6:15 - 6:19or whoever be interested
may get in touch with this universe -
6:19 - 6:24so that we can dialogue and build
on these presuppositions. -
6:24 - 6:27Thank you. I deeply thank you
for your time. -
6:27 - 6:28See you soon.
