Social media and the Greek culture | Nathan Vineyard | TEDxBountiful

0:27 - 0:31I feel so special. I have my own mic here.
-
0:31 - 0:34I am so happy to be here with you today.
-
0:34 - 0:37I bring you wonderful
greetings from Park City. -
0:37 - 0:39We have our Sundance coming up.
-
0:39 - 0:41I'll be going back up to Park City
-
0:41 - 0:45to be on the radio station to talk about
all of the cool people we've talked to -
0:45 - 0:49the directors and filmmakers,
and it's a very fun place to be. -
0:49 - 0:55And, my role in that place up there
is to bring that content to everyone -
0:55 - 1:01through the wonderful new phenomenon
which we've called social media. -
1:02 - 1:05I'm going to throw out
one really cool stat for you, -
1:05 - 1:10and that is 80% of all Americans
use an online social network -
1:13 - 1:18and the most used website
in all of America is Facebook. -
1:21 - 1:24So being in social media
and being in news and information, -
1:25 - 1:29and having a very, very strong passion,
and a love of the classics, -
1:29 - 1:31I decided to combine the two.
-
1:31 - 1:34I created this beautiful website
called ClassicCulture.org. -
1:36 - 1:42At ClassicCulture.org,
I bring about the best ideas. -
1:43 - 1:48The most beautiful artwork
and incredible stories -
1:49 - 1:54that we are all part of,
it's our heritage, it's our culture. -
1:54 - 1:56The Greek culture; the Romans.
-
1:59 - 2:02And having that website,
and using social social media, -
2:02 - 2:05I combined the two, and now,
you can get everything on your phone, -
2:09 - 2:11and that's a big deal to me.
-
2:11 - 2:15Gutenberg in the 1400s
created the printing press. -
2:17 - 2:18Through the printing press,
-
2:18 - 2:22we're able to get all this information
and pass it along to each other. -
2:22 - 2:25It's old social media that they created.
-
2:25 - 2:28And today Facebook, I would say,
-
2:29 - 2:32is the most important invention
since that press machine, -
2:33 - 2:35that was invented in Germany,
-
2:36 - 2:42and it allows for information
to pass on within the click of a button -
2:42 - 2:44to anywhere in the world.
-
2:46 - 2:50Doing social media in Park City,
we can take information, -
2:50 - 2:52the interviews that we have,
-
2:52 - 2:55and we can post them to the countries
the people come from, -
2:55 - 2:58Germany, Northern Europe.
-
2:58 - 3:01And we post that immediately,
instantaneously, to where they are. -
3:02 - 3:04So I'm just going to feature
-
3:04 - 3:07some of this cool stuff that is
on our Facebook page for ClassicCulture. -
3:09 - 3:11This is what Julius Caesar said:
-
3:11 - 3:15"As a rule, men worry more
about what they can't see -
3:16 - 3:18than about what they can."
-
3:25 - 3:28This is another really cool quote.
-
3:28 - 3:33It was featured on a lot
on the graves in Greece and in Rome. -
3:33 - 3:40It said: "I was not. I have been.
I am not. I do not mind." -
3:50 - 3:55And so, through your phone,
you can access some of the best ideas. -
3:55 - 3:58They're not going to conform exactly
with the ideas that we have today, -
3:58 - 4:00and that's why you want to use them.
-
4:00 - 4:03That's why you want
to bring them into your life. -
4:03 - 4:06It's because they give you
a completely different perspective -
4:06 - 4:08which will help you evaluate
-
4:08 - 4:11what you're doing today,
and why you're doing it. -
4:13 - 4:16This is one of my favorite
ones from Plato: -
4:16 - 4:20"If a man wants to know
the origin of states and societies, -
4:20 - 4:23he should behold them
from the point of view of time. -
4:24 - 4:27Thousands of cities have come into being
-
4:27 - 4:32and have passed away,
again and again, in infinite ages." -
4:34 - 4:39Being at this cultural hearth,
-
4:39 - 4:42they were able to see
the Egyptians and the Romans -
4:42 - 4:44all these incredible, diverse cultures,
-
4:44 - 4:47and they were there,
right in the thick of it. -
4:47 - 4:49They observed it all.
-
4:51 - 4:57Greece is the founding civilization
of our entire society: democracy, -
4:59 - 5:02ethics, philosophy, mathematics.
-
5:02 - 5:08If I can ask by a show of hands,
who studied Latin in K-12? -
5:11 - 5:13OK, three people.
-
5:13 - 5:15Who studied Latin in college?
-
5:19 - 5:22OK, one person.
-
5:22 - 5:23So, for whatever reason,
-
5:25 - 5:30the founding principles of our society,
and our civilization are gone. -
5:35 - 5:36They're inaccessible.
-
5:36 - 5:39They're in the back
of university libraries -
5:39 - 5:42that no one touches, or no on accesses.
-
5:43 - 5:48There was this Greek who founded Athens.
His name was Theseus. -
5:50 - 5:52He concurred the labyrinth in Crete.
-
5:54 - 5:56He found his way,
and he found the minotaur. -
5:56 - 5:58He slayed the minotaur.
-
5:59 - 6:04And, on his way back to Acropolis,
he declared "Aphrodite Pandemos," -
6:05 - 6:09and that is "beauty for the people."
-
6:11 - 6:15That's my mission and my idea
that I bring to you today. -
6:15 - 6:16Thank you.
