Creative problem-solving in the face of extreme limits

  • Not Synced
When you grow up in a developing country
  • Not Synced
    like India, as I did,
  • Not Synced
you instantly learn to get more value
  • Not Synced
    from limited resources
  • Not Synced
and find creative ways to reuse
  • Not Synced
    what you already have.
  • Not Synced
    Take Mansou Prajipati[??],
  • Not Synced
    a potter in India.
  • Not Synced
    He has created a fridge
    made entirely of clay
  • Not Synced
    that consumes no electricity.
  • Not Synced
He can keep fruits and vegetables
    fresh for many days.
  • Not Synced
    That's a cool invention, literally.
  • Not Synced
In Africa, if you run out of
your cell phone battery, don't panic.
  • Not Synced
    You will find some
    resourceful entrepreneurs
  • Not Synced
who can recharge your cell phone
    using the bicycles.
  • Not Synced
And since we are in South America,
  • Not Synced
let's go to Lima in Peru,
  • Not Synced
    a region with high humidity
  • Not Synced
    and receives only one inch
    of rainfall each year.
  • Not Synced
An engineer in college in Lima
  • Not Synced
    designed a giant advertising billboard
  • Not Synced
    that absorbs air humidity
  • Not Synced
and converts it into purified water,
  • Not Synced
    generating over 90 liters
    of water every day.
  • Not Synced
    The Peruvians are amazing.
  • Not Synced
    They can literally create
    water out of thin air.
  • Not Synced
    For the past seven years,
  • Not Synced
    I have met and studied
    hundreds of entrepreneurs
  • Not Synced
    in India, China, Africa,
    and South America,
  • Not Synced
    and they keep amazing me.
  • Not Synced
Many of them did not go to school.
  • Not Synced
    They don't invent stuff
    in big R&D labs.
  • Not Synced
    The street is the lab.
  • Not Synced
    Why do they do that?
  • Not Synced
Because they don't have the kind
of basic resources we take for granted,
  • Not Synced
    like capital, energy,
  • Not Synced
    and basic services,
    like health care, education,
  • Not Synced
are also scarce in those regions.
  • Not Synced
    When external resources are scarce,
  • Not Synced
you have to go within yourself
  • Not Synced
to tap the most abundant resource,
  • Not Synced
human ingenuity, and use that ingenuity
  • Not Synced
to find clever ways to solve problems
  • Not Synced
    with limited resources.
  • Not Synced
In India, we call it Jugaad.
  • Not Synced
    Jugaad is a Hindi word
  • Not Synced
    that means an improvised fix,
a clever solution borne in adversity.
  • Not Synced
    Jugaad solutions are not
    sophisticated or perfect,
  • Not Synced
but they create more value at lower cost.
  • Not Synced
    For me, the entrepreneurs
    who will create Jugaad solutions
  • Not Synced
    are like alchemists.
  • Not Synced
    They can magically transform
    adversity into opportunity,
  • Not Synced
and turn something of less value
  • Not Synced
    into something of high value.
  • Not Synced
In other words, they mastered the art
    of doing more with less,
  • Not Synced
which is the essence of frugal innovation.
  • Not Synced
    Frugal innovation is the ability
  • Not Synced
to create more economic and social value
  • Not Synced
    using fewer resources.
  • Not Synced
Frugal innovation is not about making do:
  • Not Synced
    it's about making things better.
  • Not Synced
Now, I want to show you how,
    across emerging markets,
  • Not Synced
    entrepreneurs and companies
  • Not Synced
    are adopting frugal innovation
    on a larger scale
  • Not Synced
    to cost-effectively deliver
    health care, energy,
  • Not Synced
    to billions of people
    who may have little income
  • Not Synced
    but very high aspirations.
  • Not Synced
    Let's first go to China,
  • Not Synced
    where the country's largest
    IEP service provider, NewSoft,
  • Not Synced
    has developed a telemedicine solution
  • Not Synced
    to help doctors in cities
remotely treat old an poor patients
  • Not Synced
    in Chinese villages.
  • Not Synced
    This solution is based on
    simple-to-use medical devices
  • Not Synced
    that less-qualified health workers
like nurses can use in rural clinics.
  • Not Synced
    China desperately needs
    these frugal medical solutions,
  • Not Synced
because by 2050, it will be home
to over half a billion senior citizens.
  • Not Synced
    Now, let's go to Kenya,
  • Not Synced
a country where half the population
uses M-PESA, the mobile payment solution.
  • Not Synced
    This is a great solution
    for the African continent,
  • Not Synced
    because 80 percent of Africans
    don't have a bank account,
  • Not Synced
but what is exciting is that M-PESA
  • Not Synced
    is now becoming the source
    of other disruptive business models
  • Not Synced
    in sectors like energy.
  • Not Synced
Take M-KOPA, the home solar solution
  • Not Synced
that comes literally in a box
  • Not Synced
that has a solar rooftop panel,
  • Not Synced
    three LED lights,
  • Not Synced
a solar radio, and a cell phone charger.
  • Not Synced
The whole kit, though, costs 200 dollars,
  • Not Synced
which is too expensive for most Kenyans,
  • Not Synced
and this is where mobile telephony
  • Not Synced
can make the solution more affordable.
  • Not Synced
Today, you can buy this kit by making
an initial deposit of just 35 dollars,
  • Not Synced
and then pay off the rest by making
    a daily micro-payment of 45 cents
  • Not Synced
    using your mobile phone.
  • Not Synced
    Once you've made 365 micro-payments,
  • Not Synced
    the system is unlocked,
  • Not Synced
    and you own the product
  • Not Synced
    and you start receiving
    clean, free electricity.
  • Not Synced
This is an amazing solution for Kenya,
  • Not Synced
where 70 percent of the people
    live off the grid.
  • Not Synced
This shows that, with frugal innovation,
  • Not Synced
what matters is that you take what is
    most abundant, mobile connectivity,
  • Not Synced
to deal with what is scarce,
    which is energy.
  • Not Synced
With frugal innovation, the Global South
is actually catching up and some cases
  • Not Synced
    even leap-frogging the North.
  • Not Synced
    Instead of building expensive hospitals,
  • Not Synced
    China is using telemedicine
  • Not Synced
    to cost-effectively treat
    millions of patients,
  • Not Synced
    and Africa, instead of building
    banks and electricity grids,
  • Not Synced
is going straight to mobile payments
    and distributed clean energy.
  • Not Synced
    Frugal innovation is diametrically opposed
  • Not Synced
to the way we innovate in the North.
  • Not Synced
    I live in Silicon Valley,
  • Not Synced
    where we keep chasing
    the next big technology thing.
  • Not Synced
    Think of the iPhone 5, 6, then 7, 8.
  • Not Synced
    Companies in the West spend
billions of dollars investing in R&D,
  • Not Synced
and use tons of natural resources
to create ever more complex products,
  • Not Synced
    to differentiate their brands
    from competition,
  • Not Synced
    and they charge customers
    more money for new features.
  • Not Synced
    So the conventional
    business model in the West
  • Not Synced
    is more for more,
  • Not Synced
but sadly, this more for more model
  • Not Synced
is running out of gas, for three reasons.
  • Not Synced
    First, a big portion
    of customers in the West
  • Not Synced
    because of the diminishing
    purchasing power,
  • Not Synced
    can no longer afford
    these expensive products.
  • Not Synced
Second, we are running out of
    natural water and oil.
  • Not Synced
    In California, where I live,
water scarcity is becoming a big problem.
  • Not Synced
    And third, most importantly,
  • Not Synced
    because the growing income disparity
  • Not Synced
between the rich and the middle class
  • Not Synced
    in the West,
  • Not Synced
    there is a big disconnect
    between existing products and services
  • Not Synced
    and basic needs of customers.
  • Not Synced
    Do you know that today,
  • Not Synced
there are over 70 million Americans
  • Not Synced
    today who are underbanked,
  • Not Synced
    because existing banking services
  • Not Synced
    are not designed to address
    their basic needs.
  • Not Synced
    So the prolonged economic crisis
in the West is making people think
  • Not Synced
that they are about to lose
    the high standard of living
  • Not Synced
    and face deprivation.
  • Not Synced
I believe that the only way we can sustain
growth and prosperity in the West
  • Not Synced
is if we learn to do more with less.
  • Not Synced
    The good news is,
    that's starting to happen.
  • Not Synced
    Several Western companies
    are now adopting frugal innovation
  • Not Synced
    to create affordable products
    for Western consumers.
  • Not Synced
Let me give you two examples.
  • Not Synced
When I first saw this building,
  • Not Synced
I told myself it's some kind
    of post-modern house.
  • Not Synced
Actually, it's a small manufacturing plant
  • Not Synced
set up by Grameen Danone, a joint venture
  • Not Synced
between Grameen Bank of Muhammad Yunus
  • Not Synced
    and the food multinational Danone
  • Not Synced
to make high quality yogurt in Bangladesh.
  • Not Synced
This factory is 10 percent the size
  • Not Synced
    of existing Danone factories
  • Not Synced
and cost much less to build.
  • Not Synced
I guess you can call it
    a low fat factory.
  • Not Synced
Now this factory, unlike Western factories
    that are highly automated,
  • Not Synced
relies a lot on mannered processes
  • Not Synced
    in order to generate jobs
    for local communities.
  • Not Synced
Danone was so inspired by this model
  • Not Synced
    that combines economic sufficiency
    and social sustainability,
  • Not Synced
they are planning to roll it out
  • Not Synced
in other parts of the world as well.
  • Not Synced
Now, when you see this example,
  • Not Synced
    you might be thinking, "Well,
frugal innovation is like low tech."
  • Not Synced
    Actually, no.
  • Not Synced
    Frugal innovation is also
    about making high tech
  • Not Synced
    more affordable and more
    accessible to more people.
  • Not Synced
Let me give you an example.
  • Not Synced
    In China, the R&D engineers
    of Siemens Healthcare
  • Not Synced
    have designed a CT scanner
  • Not Synced
that is easy enough to be used
  • Not Synced
    by less qualified health workers,
    like nurses and technicians.
  • Not Synced
    This device can scan
more patients on a daily basis,
  • Not Synced
    and yet consumes less energy,
  • Not Synced
    which is great for hospitals,
  • Not Synced
but it's also great for patients
  • Not Synced
    because it reduces the cost
    of treatment by 30 percent
  • Not Synced
and radiation dosage by up to 60 percent.
  • Not Synced
    This solution was initially designed
    for the Chinese market,
  • Not Synced
but now it's selling like hotcakes
    in the U.S. and Europe,
  • Not Synced
    where hospitals are pressured
to deliver quality care at lower cost.
  • Not Synced
    But the frugal innovation revolution
  • Not Synced
in the West is actually led
    by creative entrepreneurs
  • Not Synced
who are coming up with amazing solutions
  • Not Synced
    to address basic needs
    in the U.S. and Europe.
  • Not Synced
    Let me quickly give you
    three examples of start-ups
  • Not Synced
    that personally inspire me.
  • Not Synced
The first one happens to be launched
  • Not Synced
by my neighbor in Silicon Valley.
  • Not Synced
    It's called G-Drive.
  • Not Synced
They make actually these wireless sensors
    designed like plastic rulers
  • Not Synced
    that farmers can stick
in different parts of the field
  • Not Synced
    and start collecting detailed
    information like soil conditions.
  • Not Synced
    This dynamic data allows farmers
to optimize use of water energy
  • Not Synced
    while improving quality
of the products and the yields,
  • Not Synced
which is a great solution for California,
  • Not Synced
    that faces major water shortage.
  • Not Synced
It pays for itself within one year.
  • Not Synced
    Second example is Be-Bound,
    also in Silicon Valley,
  • Not Synced
    that enables you
    to connect to the Internet
  • Not Synced
    even if no-bandwidth areas
where there's no Wifi or 3G or 4G.
  • Not Synced
    How do they do that?
  • Not Synced
They simply use SMS, a basic technology,
  • Not Synced
but it happens to be the most reliable
  • Not Synced
    and most widely available
    around the world.
  • Not Synced
    Three billion people today
    with cell phones
  • Not Synced
    can't access the Internet.
  • Not Synced
    This solution can connect them
to the Internet in a frugal way.
  • Not Synced
    And in France, there is
    a startup calle Compte Nickel
  • Not Synced

    which is revolutionizing
    the banking sector.
  • Not Synced
    It allows thousands of people
to walk into a mom-and-pop store
  • Not Synced
and in just five minutes activate
the service that gives them two products:
  • Not Synced
    an international bank account number
    and an international debit card.
  • Not Synced
They charge a flat annual maintenance fee
  • Not Synced
    of just 20 Euros.
  • Not Synced
    That means you can do
    all banking transactions
  • Not Synced
    -- send and receive money,
pay with your debit card --
  • Not Synced
    all with no additional charge.
  • Not Synced
This is what I call low-cost banking
    without the bank.
  • Not Synced
Amazingly, 75 percent of the customers
using this service are middle class French
  • Not Synced
who can't afford high banking fees.
  • Not Synced
Now, I talked about frugal innovation,
    initially pioneered in the South,
  • Not Synced
now being adopted in the North.
  • Not Synced
Ultimately, we would like to see
  • Not Synced
    developed countries
    and developing countries
  • Not Synced
    come together and co-create
    frugal solutions
  • Not Synced
    that benefit the entire humanity.
  • Not Synced
    The exciting news is
    that's starting to happen.
  • Not Synced
Let's go to Nairobi to find that out.
  • Not Synced
    Nairobi has horrendous traffic jams.
  • Not Synced
When I first saw them, I told myself,
  • Not Synced
    "Holy cow."
  • Not Synced
Literally, because you have to dodge cows
as well when you drive in Nairobi.
  • Not Synced
    To ease the situation,
  • Not Synced
the engineers at IBM Lab in Kenya
  • Not Synced
are piloting a solution called Megafig,
  • Not Synced
    which initially was designed
    by the Japanese engineers.
  • Not Synced
    Unlike in the West, Megafig
    doesn't rely on roadside sensors,
  • Not Synced
    which are very expensive
    to install in Nairobi.
  • Not Synced
Instead they process images, traffic data,
  • Not Synced
    collected from a small number
  • Not Synced
    of low-resolution webcams
    in Nairobi streets,
  • Not Synced
and then they use analytic software
    to predict congestion points,
  • Not Synced
    and they can SMS drivers
    alternate routes to take.
  • Not Synced
    Granted, Megafig is not
    as sexy as self-driving cars,
  • Not Synced
but it promises to take Nairobi drivers
  • Not Synced
from point A to point B
    at least 20 percent faster.
  • Not Synced
And earlier this year, UCLA Health
launched its Global Lab for Innovation,
  • Not Synced
    which seeks to identify
    frugal health care solutions
  • Not Synced
    anywhere in the world
  • Not Synced
that will be at least 20 percent cheaper
than existing solutions in the U.S.
  • Not Synced
    and yet more effective.
  • Not Synced
It also tries to bring together
    innovators from North and South
  • Not Synced
    to co-create affordable
    health care solutions
  • Not Synced
    for the entire humanity.
  • Not Synced
I gave tons of examples of frugal
    innovators from around the world,
  • Not Synced
but the question is, how do you go about
    adopting frugal innovation?
