0:01 - 0:05The iPad has opened a whole new world of learning opportunities for individuals
-
0:05 - 0:08with autism and others with learning challenges.
-
0:08 - 0:09However
-
0:09 - 0:11it's not a magical tool.
-
0:11 - 0:15It's important for your child view the iPad as a learning tool
-
0:15 - 0:18and not associate it as a stemming tool.
-
0:18 - 0:19To accomplish this
-
0:19 - 0:23you need to choose apps that are educationally appropriate
-
0:23 - 0:26specific to your child's learning goals...
-
0:26 - 0:28setting recommendations
-
0:28 - 0:33that restrict access to non-educational areas like YouTube and the internet
-
0:33 - 0:35and promote learning.
-
0:35 - 0:37Instruction.
-
0:37 - 0:41Proven techniques that allow you to work interactively with your child
-
0:41 - 0:45and a detailed plan to accomplish all of this.
-
0:45 - 0:48Additionally, it's essential
-
0:48 - 0:52that you are actively involved in a learning process.
-
0:52 - 0:59With thousands of different apps, all of this can be an overwhelming process for many parents.
-
0:59 - 1:04That's why we've created a systematic process that simplifies all of this.
-
1:04 - 1:10Here's a brief example of an app we chose and the recommendations we provide.
-
1:10 - 1:14The parent's goal was to have their child expand language use
-
1:14 - 1:17specifically to learn verbs.
-
1:17 - 1:22We provided them with specific settings to ensure the app will be used for educational purposes
-
1:22 - 1:27and a script that provides step-by-step instructions for what to
-
1:27 - 1:30say when working with their child in the app.
-
1:30 - 1:33This is the My PlayHome app that was chosen.
-
1:33 - 1:37As you can see it's a highly interactive app with various features.
-
1:37 - 1:44This is a great app that parents can sit side-by-side with their child and work on several different verbs.
-
1:44 - 1:49In this brief example our goal was to teach two verbs "pour" and "eat".
-
1:49 - 1:54It was important for the child to learn that the concept of "pour" and "eat" can be used for various items.
-
1:54 - 1:57This is how we instructed the parents to do this.
-
1:57 - 2:02Pour the orange juice.
-
2:02 - 2:06Pour the cereal.
-
2:06 - 2:12Eat the cereal.
-
2:12 - 2:20Eat the apple.
-
2:20 - 2:21To summarize, we selected the app
-
2:21 - 2:24to expand understanding and use of verbs.
-
2:24 - 2:28We provided the parents with a step-by-step plan on how to use it
-
2:28 - 2:32and we provide additional strategies to generalize the skills learned in the app
-
2:32 - 2:35into the home setting.
