How to take a great picture - Carolina Molinari
-
0:08 - 0:11Hmmm, that's not what we want, is it?
-
0:11 - 0:14Today's digital cameras do a lot for us,
-
0:14 - 0:16but there's no replacement for the human eye.
-
0:16 - 0:17It's important to learn
-
0:17 - 0:20how cameras work with light to create an image,
-
0:20 - 0:22that way we'll know what's going on
-
0:22 - 0:24when it's time to capture a moment.
-
0:24 - 0:25There are three variables
-
0:25 - 0:27that determine if you're getting the right amount of light
-
0:27 - 0:29for the correct exposure.
-
0:29 - 0:30With a manual camera,
-
0:30 - 0:34we're able to change any of the variable ourselves.
-
0:34 - 0:37Different settings can result in really different pictures.
-
0:37 - 0:40Let's look at the process together.
-
0:40 - 0:41First, see this here?
-
0:41 - 0:43This is the aperture.
-
0:43 - 0:45It's the hole that light passes through.
-
0:45 - 0:47If we make the aperture big,
-
0:47 - 0:48we'll have more light, true,
-
0:48 - 0:50but the sharpness of your photo will decrease
-
0:50 - 0:52very quickly from your focus point,
-
0:52 - 0:54backward and forward.
-
0:54 - 0:56This is what we call shallow depth of field.
-
0:56 - 0:58If we have a very small aperture,
-
0:58 - 1:01we'll have less light but a deeper depth of field.
-
1:01 - 1:04For portraits, it can be nice to have a sharp figure
-
1:04 - 1:06separate from a somewhat blurry background
-
1:06 - 1:08so I would suggest a large aperture.
-
1:08 - 1:11Aperture is measured in f-stops.
-
1:11 - 1:12This can get a little confusing
-
1:12 - 1:15because lower numbers mean bigger apertures
-
1:15 - 1:18and higher numbers mean smaller apertures.
-
1:18 - 1:21Next, there's shutter speed to think about.
-
1:21 - 1:22The shutter acts like a curtain
-
1:22 - 1:23that covers the sensor,
-
1:23 - 1:27and it only opens when you release the shutter button.
-
1:27 - 1:28If we want less light,
-
1:28 - 1:30we open the shutter for a shorter time.
-
1:30 - 1:31If we want more light,
-
1:31 - 1:33we open it for a longer time,
-
1:33 - 1:34but we run the risk of getting
-
1:34 - 1:36a motion-blurred picture.
-
1:36 - 1:38The speed is measured in seconds
-
1:38 - 1:40and fractions of seconds.
-
1:40 - 1:43For shooting sports or anything with a lot of movement,
-
1:43 - 1:45we'll need faster speeds.
-
1:45 - 1:47For taking awesome night landscapes,
-
1:47 - 1:49longer exposures will be better,
-
1:49 - 1:50but we'll need a tripod to steady the shot
-
1:50 - 1:53and prevent motion blur.
-
1:53 - 1:55Another cool thing we can do with light exposures
-
1:55 - 1:56is light painting,
-
1:56 - 1:58drawing in the dark with a torch
-
1:58 - 2:00or the light of a cell phone.
-
2:00 - 2:02Lastly, ISO sensitivity controls
-
2:02 - 2:05how sensitive the sensor is to light.
-
2:05 - 2:06If we use low sensitivity,
-
2:06 - 2:09we'll need more light to register a photo.
-
2:09 - 2:10With a higher sensitivity,
-
2:10 - 2:11we'll be able to get a picture
-
2:11 - 2:14with less available light.
-
2:14 - 2:16100 ISO is a low sensitivity,
-
2:16 - 2:19while 6400 ISO is a high one.
-
2:19 - 2:21If we increase sensitivity,
-
2:21 - 2:23we'll be able to use faster speeds
-
2:23 - 2:24and smaller apertures,
-
2:24 - 2:27but we'll get noisier images.
-
2:27 - 2:28Good thing we have something to tell us
-
2:28 - 2:30if we're getting the correct amount of light
-
2:30 - 2:31to get a good exposure,
-
2:31 - 2:33the light meter.
-
2:33 - 2:34Sound good to you?
-
2:34 - 2:35Now it's time to get out there
-
2:35 - 2:37and practice taking pictures
-
2:37 - 2:38under different conditions,
-
2:38 - 2:39so you know what to do
-
2:39 - 2:42any time you want to take the best picture.

Have you ever looked at your camera and wondered what all of those buttons actually do? For manual photography, the aperture, shutter speed and ISO sensitivity can all be manipulated to get just the right amount of light. Carolina Molinari suggests the best exposure for an action photo, a stunning portrait or a nighttime landscape.
