An Introduction to Gladio B - James Corbett on Breaking The Set

  • 0:01 - 0:05
I have briefly touched upon the shady
    tactics used by the governments
  • 0:05 - 0:07
to foment public support for war.
  • 0:07 - 0:11
One such program by the US was
put in place during the Cold War,
  • 0:11 - 0:13
    called Operation Gladio,
  • 0:13 - 0:16
the aim of which was to have
    paramilitary organizations
  • 0:16 - 0:17
stay behind in the Eastern Bloc
  • 0:17 - 0:20
    to continue the destabilization
    of regional powers.
  • 0:20 - 0:24
And although the program was finally
    acknowledged in 2006,
  • 0:24 - 0:26
and is said to be long over,
  • 0:26 - 0:28
some allege that it never really ended:
  • 0:28 - 0:30
    instead, this clandestine operation
  • 0:30 - 0:33
simply morphed to fit the needs
    of the War on Terror.
  • 0:34 - 0:37
Here to help me break down this very
    important and convoluted subject
  • 0:37 - 0:39
    is James Corbett: independent journalist
  • 0:39 - 0:40
and host of The Corbett Report.
  • 0:40 - 0:42
    Thanks for coming on, James.
  • 0:42 - 0:44
(James): Thank you for having me Abby.
  • 0:44 - 0:47
    So, what did Operation Gladio
    consist of,
  • 0:47 - 0:50
and how far-reaching was the program?
  • 0:51 - 0:53
Well: you were recently, on the program,
  • 0:53 - 0:56
talking about the top five conspiracies
    that turned out to be true;
  • 0:56 - 0:59
    and I think Operation Gladio
has to rank up there among them.
  • 1:00 - 1:02
"Gladio" is the code name for a
    clandestine operation that,
  • 1:02 - 1:06
as you indicate, was set up
by NATO in conjunction with the CIA
  • 1:06 - 1:08
in the wake of World War II
  • 1:08 - 1:10
as the Cold War started to develop.
  • 1:10 - 1:12
And the official cover of this program
  • 1:12 - 1:16
was that it was designed as
    a stay-behind program
  • 1:16 - 1:20
to fund, train, equip, supply, and
    otherwise facilitate
  • 1:21 - 1:23
groups to be ready in the case
  • 1:23 - 1:25
of a Soviet invasion of Europe.
  • 1:25 - 1:26
And if that were to happen,
  • 1:26 - 1:28
    basically, these groups would
    be able to resist
  • 1:28 - 1:31
    the Soviet occupation forces
  • 1:31 - 1:34
    while NATO prepared some sort
    of military response.
  • 1:34 - 1:37
That was, at least, the official cover
    for what was happening;
  • 1:37 - 1:40
    but ultimately what resulted
    from this was,
  • 1:40 - 1:43
over the course of the five decades of
    the Cold War
  • 1:44 - 1:48
these funds and arms and equipment
  • 1:48 - 1:50
    were going to paramilitary groups
  • 1:50 - 1:52
    and ultranationalist groups
  • 1:52 - 1:54
    that were basically against...
  • 1:54 - 1:56
    hard-line anti-Communists.
  • 1:56 - 1:58
And this resulted in a number of
  • 1:58 - 2:00
    different operations, events,
    and outrages
  • 2:00 - 2:03
    that ultimately were blamed
    on Communists
  • 2:03 - 2:05
as a way of trying to basically
  • 2:06 - 2:10
    cripple the political Left
    in Europe during that period.
  • 2:10 - 2:13
    And perhaps the best-known
    of those outrages and atrocities
  • 2:13 - 2:14
    was the 1980 Bologna Bombing,
  • 2:14 - 2:18
    which killed 85 people
    and wounded 200 more.
  • 2:18 - 2:21
    That was, again, directly linked
    to this Operation Gladio.
  • 2:21 - 2:23
    It was eventually exposed
  • 2:23 - 2:25
    in the early 1990s
  • 2:25 - 2:27
    in the Italian Parliament,
  • 2:27 - 2:30
and eventually, that resulted in an outcry
  • 2:30 - 2:32
that was supposedly going to kick off
  • 2:32 - 2:34
    a European Parliamentary investigation
  • 2:34 - 2:36
    that never actually occurred.
  • 2:36 - 2:38
But we've been led to believe
  • 2:38 - 2:41
    -- in a lot of the English-language
media, and in the Western world --
  • 2:41 - 2:43
    that this was specifically
    focused on Europe,
  • 2:43 - 2:47
and it specifically started and ended
    with the Cold War.
  • 2:47 - 2:50
But in fact, as more information
continues to come out about it,
  • 2:50 - 2:53
we start to see that, in fact,
    the field of operations
  • 2:53 - 2:55
of Operation Gladio really is global
  • 2:55 - 2:57
and that it continues to this current day.
  • 2:57 - 3:00
Well let's talk about that transition.
    I mean: very shocking.
  • 3:00 - 3:03
I didn't even really understand the extent
    of Operation Gladio
  • 3:03 - 3:05
until I was watching your series.
  • 3:05 - 3:08
I recommend everyone to check that out.
    A really thorough series,
  • 3:08 - 3:11
    just basically outlining everything
    that this operation was.
  • 3:11 - 3:13
    As you said: I mean, it's a
    decades-long operation
  • 3:13 - 3:16
    that consisted of false-flag terror
    attacks, death,
  • 3:16 - 3:20
    the funding of ultranationalist groups
    to foment terrorism.
  • 3:20 - 3:23
Let's talk about the transition into
    Gladio B.
  • 3:23 - 3:26
You said that there's evidence showing
    that this is actually
  • 3:26 - 3:30
still happening today, and it's actually
    morphed into something else.
  • 3:30 - 3:33
What is that? And what evidence
is there to back that up?
  • 3:33 - 3:35
    Well, as you say,
  • 3:35 - 3:37
I had a video series that I conducted
    earlier this year
  • 3:37 - 3:39
    with FBI whistleblower Sibel Edmonds.
  • 3:39 - 3:42
And as people may or may not
know, she's been referred to as
  • 3:42 - 3:44
    "the most gagged woman
    in the United States"
  • 3:44 - 3:46
by the ACLU and other organizations
  • 3:46 - 3:49
for having the state secrets privilege
    applied to her case,
  • 3:49 - 3:51
to classify all sorts of information
  • 3:51 - 3:53
about what she was working on
  • 3:53 - 3:54
at her time in the FBI
  • 3:54 - 3:57
    in the translation department at
    the Washington Field Office.
  • 3:57 - 4:00
    And basically the information
    that she had
  • 4:00 - 4:03
indicated that there was a change
  • 4:03 - 4:06
that occurred in this Operation Gladio,
  • 4:06 - 4:07
    that occurred in the mid-1990s.
  • 4:07 - 4:09
    And she was specifically focused
  • 4:09 - 4:12
on the Turkish field of operations.
  • 4:12 - 4:15
And this is -- again -- documented and
    on the record
  • 4:15 - 4:18
-- although little known and little
talked-about in the Western media --
  • 4:18 - 4:20
    but Turkey was, in fact,
    one of the first places
  • 4:20 - 4:24
    where Operation Gladio eventuated; and
was, in fact, one of the central places
  • 4:24 - 4:27
as a geostrategic window: the bridge...
  • 4:27 - 4:29
    -- the so-called bridge --
between Europe and the Middle East
  • 4:29 - 4:33
it's always had a geostrategic location,
    and, as such,
  • 4:33 - 4:36
was one of the jewels in the crown
    of the Operation Gladio program.
  • 4:36 - 4:38
    But in the mid-1990s,
  • 4:38 - 4:40
    Operation Gladio started to shift
  • 4:40 - 4:42
    from that funding of paramilitaries
  • 4:42 - 4:43
    and ultranationalist groups
  • 4:44 - 4:45
    -- in Turkey, specifically --
  • 4:45 - 4:49
    towards an operation more like
  • 4:49 - 4:51
    what we saw in Afghanistan
    in the 1980s:
  • 4:51 - 4:55
    where the US, specifically,
    was funding, and helping,
  • 4:55 - 4:57
    and training, and arming
    the mujahideen
  • 4:57 - 5:00
    in their fight against the
    Soviets in Afghanistan.
  • 5:01 - 5:02
    And this became the model
  • 5:02 - 5:04
for what's known as Gladio B.
  • 5:04 - 5:07
Gladio B is the term that
    -- Sibel Edmonds indicates --
  • 5:07 - 5:11
is the actual FBI file that they
    have on this:
  • 5:11 - 5:14
the information on this in the FBI.
  • 5:14 - 5:15
But there is a different name
  • 5:15 - 5:17
for whatever office in the Pentagon
  • 5:17 - 5:20
    actually works with NATO
    on this operation.
  • 5:20 - 5:22
    That's still classified:
  • 5:22 - 5:26
We don't know that. But we do know that
it's referred to as Gladio B by the FBI.
  • 5:26 - 5:28
And basically, this is the cooperation
  • 5:28 - 5:30
    of NATO and US
  • 5:30 - 5:34
    -- including high-ranking US State
    Department officials and others --
  • 5:34 - 5:37
    with Islamic terrorists, basically,
  • 5:37 - 5:40
    in the perpetuation of a
    strategy of tension
  • 5:40 - 5:43
which can be used as a type of weapon
  • 5:43 - 5:46
    against... specifically in Central Asia
  • 5:46 - 5:49
    and the Caucasus region,
  • 5:49 - 5:51
which is an exceptionally important part
  • 5:51 - 5:55
    of the global chessboard,
    as Zbigniew Brzezinski talks about.
  • 5:55 - 5:58
And in fact, in his 1997 book
    The Grand Chessboard,
  • 5:58 - 6:01
he identified Central Asia as the
    absolute key
  • 6:02 - 6:05
for... anyone who wants to have
world dominance in this day and age
  • 6:05 - 6:07
    needs to control Central Asia.
  • 6:07 - 6:10
And that's where we find a lot of these
    operations, now, are being based,
  • 6:10 - 6:12
    with US and NATO officials
  • 6:12 - 6:14
    cooperating with Islamic terrorists,
  • 6:14 - 6:18
in order to foment a type of
    destabilization
  • 6:18 - 6:22
    that is aimed, ultimately,
    against rivals Russia and China.
  • 6:22 - 6:24
    Right: very fascinating.
  • 6:24 - 6:26
I remember, in the video series you're
    talking about,
  • 6:26 - 6:29
    right before 9/11
    -- as in 1997-2001 --
  • 6:29 - 6:31
    I mean, we're talking about al-Zawahiri,
  • 6:31 - 6:33
    alleged top al-Qaeda officials,
  • 6:33 - 6:36
being flown out, fostered by NATO,
  • 6:36 - 6:39
propagated by NATO, and also the CIA,
  • 6:39 - 6:41
and covert forces in the area.
  • 6:41 - 6:44
You said that this is actually
going on still, to this day.
  • 6:44 - 6:46
    What are they doing?
  • 6:46 - 6:49
And explain, really, how this manifested
  • 6:49 - 6:51
    into perpetuating what we're seeing
  • 6:51 - 6:54
play off across that region of the world
    right now?
  • 6:54 - 6:56
    Well you're exactly right
    about that.
  • 6:56 - 6:59
    And again, this comes directly
    from Sibel Edmonds
  • 6:59 - 7:02
    who was working directly
with the information from the FBI
  • 7:02 - 7:06
    that Ayman al-Zawahiri was meeting
    with top-level US officials
  • 7:06 - 7:10
in Baku, Azerbaijan, in 1997 to 2001
  • 7:10 - 7:11
    -- in that range.
  • 7:11 - 7:13
    And this is important because,
  • 7:13 - 7:14
    for people who don't know,
  • 7:15 - 7:18
    Ayman al-Zawahiri was, of course,
    Osama Bin Laden's right-hand man
  • 7:18 - 7:22
and is now the nominal head
    of al-Qaeda itself.
  • 7:22 - 7:25
So the fact that he had such high-level
contacts for so many years with...
  • 7:26 - 7:28
in the heart of the US State Department,
  • 7:28 - 7:30
    and with high-ranking officials,
  • 7:30 - 7:32
    is an exceptionally big story:
  • 7:32 - 7:34
    for obvious reasons.
  • 7:34 - 7:40
And the fact that this is still ongoing,
    I think, is certainly viewable
  • 7:40 - 7:42
in the context of what's happening
  • 7:42 - 7:44
    in that Central Asia/Caucasus region
  • 7:44 - 7:47
    with countries of such importance
  • 7:47 - 7:51
    geostrategically: like Azerbaijan
    and Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan
  • 7:51 - 7:54
which are in that Caspian Sea basin,
  • 7:54 - 7:58
and that corridor where a lot of the
    pipelines for those oil resources
  • 7:58 - 7:59
    are being hard-wired right now.
(And, of course, all of these various...)
  • 7:59 - 8:02
(Abby): And I wanted to jump in there
    really, really quickly James, because
  • 8:02 - 8:05
we have about a minute left. But of
    course, Sibel talks about drug-running
  • 8:05 - 8:09
in this operation as well: the heroin
    from Afghanistan.
  • 8:09 - 8:12
    But really quickly: I mean,
why haven't more of these allegations
  • 8:12 - 8:16
    been covered in, even, independent
    media, James?
  • 8:16 - 8:20
    Unfortunately, there is a
total wall of silence on this.
  • 8:20 - 8:24
And part of the reason, I think, the
independent media hasn't picked up on it
  • 8:24 - 8:26
is because there is so much to talk
    about, and there are
  • 8:26 - 8:28
    so many connections
    that a lot of people
  • 8:28 - 8:30
    just simply haven't
    even heard about before.
  • 8:30 - 8:34
So it is an area of the globe that
a lot of people aren't familiar with
  • 8:34 - 8:36
and it takes a lot of coaching
    to get people familiar
  • 8:36 - 8:39
with some of the players and
    names and dates.
  • 8:39 - 8:41
So just... that's one of the reasons
  • 8:41 - 8:43
    why it hasn't been featured
    in the independent media.
  • 8:43 - 8:46
    And obviously, the mainstream media,
unfortunately -- as we know --
  • 8:46 - 8:48
is controlled on these types of subjects
  • 8:48 - 8:51
and won't go near this type of
    blockbuster information.
  • 8:51 - 8:54
Well, now that you've kind of outlined the
preliminary base of knowledge about it,
