The music between traditional and cutting-edge sounds | HAIOKA | TEDxKobe
-
0:21 - 0:22Hello, everyone.
-
0:22 - 0:24My name is HAIOKA.
-
0:24 - 0:27I compose and produce
what is called "electronic music." -
0:29 - 0:32Electronic music is music created
by electronic musical instruments -
0:32 - 0:36such as synthesizers and computers.
-
0:37 - 0:40I've added a couple other things
to those instruments. -
0:40 - 0:42One is a Japanese traditional
musical instrument "so," -
0:42 - 0:44commonly known as "koto,"
-
0:44 - 0:46that was handed down
from my grandma to me. -
0:46 - 0:49Others are my own voice
and familiar sounds from our daily life, -
0:49 - 0:52like the everyday sounds
made in the kitchen, -
0:52 - 0:55and sounds of cars
passing by outside, etc. -
0:55 - 0:58I record those sounds using my microphone,
-
0:58 - 1:01and blend them into my electronic music.
-
1:01 - 1:05Why do I make music like this?
-
1:06 - 1:08It's because it is very important
-
1:08 - 1:11for me to express
the life and my feelings, -
1:11 - 1:16who lives in Japan at this present time,
-
1:16 - 1:19by creating music in this way.
-
1:19 - 1:22For me, today's Japan
-
1:22 - 1:28is a blend of its traditions
and the most advanced. -
1:29 - 1:31One of the simple examples to show that
-
1:31 - 1:34is that you may find a small shrine
at a corner on a street lined up -
1:34 - 1:38with modern cafes and buildings.
-
1:38 - 1:40Take a more familiar thing that we do.
-
1:40 - 1:43We send out New Year's greetings
through our smartphone. -
1:43 - 1:46I never disapprove of any of these.
-
1:46 - 1:51Instead, I'd rather express such a life
and all my feelings that I have, -
1:51 - 1:57while experiencing all these in Japan.
-
1:59 - 2:01I am going to play one of my songs.
-
2:01 - 2:05I would be happy if this could resonate
with something in your heart. -
2:05 - 2:06Enjoy it.
-
