The music between traditional and cutting-edge sounds | HAIOKA | TEDxKobe

  • 0:21 - 0:22
    Hello, everyone.
  • 0:22 - 0:24
    My name is HAIOKA.
  • 0:24 - 0:27
    I compose and produce
    what is called "electronic music."
  • 0:29 - 0:32
    Electronic music is music created
    by electronic musical instruments
  • 0:32 - 0:36
    such as synthesizers and computers.
  • 0:37 - 0:40
I've added a couple other things
    to those instruments.
  • 0:40 - 0:42
    One is a Japanese traditional
    musical instrument "so,"
  • 0:42 - 0:44
    commonly known as "koto,"
  • 0:44 - 0:46
    that was handed down
    from my grandma to me.
  • 0:46 - 0:49
    Others are my own voice
and familiar sounds from our daily life,
  • 0:49 - 0:52
    like the everyday sounds
    made in the kitchen,
  • 0:52 - 0:55
    and sounds of cars
    passing by outside, etc.
  • 0:55 - 0:58
I record those sounds using my microphone,
  • 0:58 - 1:01
and blend them into my electronic music.
  • 1:01 - 1:05
Why do I make music like this?
  • 1:06 - 1:08
It's because it is very important
  • 1:08 - 1:11
    for me to express
    the life and my feelings,
  • 1:11 - 1:16
who lives in Japan at this present time,
  • 1:16 - 1:19
by creating music in this way.
  • 1:19 - 1:22
    For me, today's Japan
  • 1:22 - 1:28
is a blend of its traditions
    and the most advanced.
  • 1:29 - 1:31
One of the simple examples to show that
  • 1:31 - 1:34
is that you may find a small shrine
at a corner on a street lined up
  • 1:34 - 1:38
    with modern cafes and buildings.
  • 1:38 - 1:40
Take a more familiar thing that we do.
  • 1:40 - 1:43
We send out New Year's greetings
    through our smartphone.
  • 1:43 - 1:46
I never disapprove of any of these.
  • 1:46 - 1:51
Instead, I'd rather express such a life
and all my feelings that I have,
  • 1:51 - 1:57
while experiencing all these in Japan.
  • 1:59 - 2:01
I am going to play one of my songs.
  • 2:01 - 2:05
I would be happy if this could resonate
    with something in your heart.
  • 2:05 - 2:06
    Enjoy it.
