10 Ways to stop making EXCUSES

  • 0:00 - 0:02
  • 3:35 - 3:38
    n
  • 3:38 - 3:42
and if the answer was yes then she said
then you could have thought your way out
  • 3:42 - 3:47
of it doesn't matter with John and Susan
or Mary or anybody else did or set and
  • 3:47 - 3:51
it was the most important thing she did
for my brother and myself because if you
  • 3:51 - 3:55
don't accept excuses pretty soon people
stop giving them and they start looking
  • 3:55 - 4:01
for solutions and that is a critical
issue when it comes to success
  • 4:01 - 4:05
we know that too many young men in our
community continue to make bad choices
  • 4:05 - 4:07
    and I have to say
  • 4:07 - 4:10
growing up I made quite a few myself
  • 4:12 - 4:16
sometimes I wrote off my own failings as
just as another example of the world
  • 4:16 - 4:18
trying to keep a black man down
  • 4:18 - 4:25
I had a tendency sometimes to make
excuses for me not doing the right thing
  • 4:25 - 4:30
but one of the things that all of you
have learned over the last four years is
  • 4:30 - 4:33
there is no longer any room for excuses
  • 4:38 - 4:43
    I understand there's there's a common
fraternity Creed here at at Morehouse
  • 4:43 - 4:48
excuses are tools of the incompetent
used to build bridges to nowhere and
  • 4:48 - 4:53
monuments of nothingness but we've got
    no time for excuses
  • 4:54 - 4:59
not because the bitter legacy of slavery
    and segregation had banished entirely
  • 4:59 - 5:05
they have that not because racism and
    discrimination no longer exists
  • 5:05 - 5:12
we know those are still out there it's
    just that in today's hyper-connected
  • 5:12 - 5:18
hyper competitive world with millions of
young people from China and India and
  • 5:18 - 5:23
Brazil many of whom started with a whole
lot less than all of you did all of them
  • 5:23 - 5:28
    entering the global workforce alongside
you nobody is going to give you anything
  • 5:28 - 5:34
that you have not our nobody cares how
    tough your upbringing ones
  • 5:35 - 5:39
nobody cares if you suffered some
    discrimination
  • 5:42 - 5:47
and moreover you have to remember that
whatever you've gone through it pales in
  • 5:47 - 5:52
    comparison to the hardships previous
    generations endure and they overcame
  • 5:52 - 5:57
them and if they overcame them you can
over come up to my son's 14 is fabulous
  • 5:57 - 6:03
and we're having this conversation about
what he plays in sports or when he does
  • 6:03 - 6:06
something about you go full out or do
    you not
  • 6:06 - 6:10
and I see sometimes in him that when
he's out on the field of doing something
  • 6:10 - 6:16
he doesn't play full out and I'll have
an excuse like my leg hurts or my arm
  • 6:16 - 6:22
hurts or something happened the coach
was unfair whatever angle the referee
  • 6:22 - 6:26
was unfair and what happens with people
as we tend to go out into the world and
  • 6:26 - 6:30
we look for those sort of excuses about
why things aren't the way we want them
  • 6:30 - 6:37
and when you do that you lose all your
power in life when you start focusing on
  • 6:37 - 6:41
the external on the excuses you lose
your power here is the way people really
  • 6:41 - 6:45
think i will tell you i can go out on
    the stage and bomb
  • 6:45 - 6:50
you go out there you just bomb right and
people will respect you for going out
  • 6:50 - 6:52
    there and trying your hardest
  • 6:52 - 6:57
it's not how you actually perform that
earned the respect of your peers is the
  • 6:57 - 7:00
fact that you went out and actually did
    it
  • 7:00 - 7:04
that's the difference I decided to go to
film school because i love the idea of
  • 7:04 - 7:10
    making films and photography and
everybody said it was a crazy thing to
  • 7:10 - 7:13
do because in those days nobody made it
    into the film business
  • 7:13 - 7:16
I mean just unless you were related to
somebody there was no way in
  • 7:16 - 7:23
so everything is silly you're never
going to get a job but I I wasn't moved
  • 7:23 - 7:29
by that i set the goal of getting
through film school and just then
  • 7:29 - 7:33
focused on getting to that level because
    I didn't you know I didn't know where I
  • 7:33 - 7:39
was going to go after that I wanted to
make documentary films and eventually I
  • 7:39 - 7:42
got into the goal of once i got the
    school of making a film
  • 7:42 - 7:46
one of the most telling things about
film schools you got a lot of students
  • 7:46 - 7:50
in those days especially not quite so
much today but wandering around say oh I
  • 7:50 - 7:53
wish I could make a movie i wish i could
    make a movie
  • 7:53 - 7:56
you know I can't get in this class I
can't get any you know first place i
  • 7:56 - 7:59
have an animation class it wasn't a
    production class
  • 7:59 - 8:05
I had a history class and I an animation
class in the animation class they gave
  • 8:05 - 8:13
us one minute of film to put onto the
animation camera to operate it to see
  • 8:13 - 8:15
how you could move left move right
  • 8:15 - 8:21
make it go up and down and it was a test
to see you know the the teacher would
  • 8:21 - 8:24
you had certain requirements that you
had to do you have to make it go up and
  • 8:24 - 8:28
down and then the teacher would look at
it and say oh yes you maneuver this
  • 8:28 - 8:32
machine to do these things and i took
that one minute film and made it into a
  • 8:32 - 8:40
movie and it was a movie that one like
you know 20 or 25 awards you know in
  • 8:40 - 8:45
every film festival world and kind of
    change the whole animation Department
  • 8:45 - 8:47
    and their end in
  • 8:47 - 8:50
meanwhile the other guys were into i
wish i could make a movie which is the
  • 8:50 - 8:54
production class and so then I got into
another class and it wasn't really a
  • 8:54 - 8:57
production class but I managed to get
some film when I made a movie and I made
  • 8:57 - 8:59
lots of movies while I'm in school
  • 8:59 - 9:02
    well everybody also running around
saying oh I wish I could make a move
  • 9:02 - 9:06
    so speaking of excuses
  • 9:06 - 9:10
one of my other favorite ones is no
    excuses no victim mentality
  • 9:11 - 9:15
the world owes you with nothing
  • 9:15 - 9:21
the world might come help you but I
wouldn't count on it and if you start
  • 9:21 - 9:27
from the feeling that you need the world
to participate in order for you to be
  • 9:27 - 9:31
successful at taking on this new thing
    that you're considering doing
  • 9:31 - 9:35
you're right to be scared and white I
    wouldn't count on it though
  • 9:35 - 9:39
but if you start from the perspective
that the world owes you nothing which it
  • 9:39 - 9:40
    doesn't
  • 9:40 - 9:46
and that is not likely to bring you any
particular help you have nothing to lose
  • 9:46 - 9:52
because really isn't that for every one
of the people you brought on to team is
  • 9:52 - 9:53
    not how you
  • 9:53 - 9:57
them to feel when they report to you you
know what excuses that doesn't mean that
  • 9:57 - 10:01
you can't fail or that they can't ever
fail but right when you're starting you
  • 10:01 - 10:03
    have nothing to lose right
  • 10:03 - 10:09
when you're a huge company you can spend
ninety nine percent of your time
  • 10:09 - 10:14
worrying how not to mess up the
    billion-dollar year
  • 10:14 - 10:18
money hoes you've created but you don't
have a billion-dollar your money hoes
  • 10:18 - 10:19
    right now you have nothing
  • 10:19 - 10:23
so you can't lose spend ninety nine
percent of your time imagining what
  • 10:23 - 10:28
would happen if things went well and
planning for that because there's no
  • 10:28 - 10:31
downside it's like a free option on an
    adventure
  • 10:31 - 10:35
remember to ask what do you feel is a
    bigger obstacle to success
  • 10:35 - 10:40
a lack of time or lack of capital
Roberto this is a tremendous question i
  • 10:40 - 10:42
    think the biggest obstacle
  • 10:42 - 10:50
I to success is a lack of optimism that
question in itself is the problem my
  • 10:50 - 10:50
    friend right
  • 10:50 - 10:53
you're looking at two things that are
    both negatives and guess what
  • 10:53 - 10:57
both of them are obstacles when i
started my library . com transformation
  • 10:57 - 10:58
    from my business
  • 10:58 - 11:01
I had time i worked my face off every
minute but we don't have a whole lot of
  • 11:01 - 11:04
money in our profit center so it took
    more time right
  • 11:04 - 11:08
it's just the way it is today i have
more money boy don't have time but
  • 11:08 - 11:15
neither ever ever will be an excuse for
me and so just to Jill this through the
  • 11:15 - 11:17
throat of the vaynernation that's right
  • 11:17 - 11:21
I want that graphic don't smile d Rock
    here's the bottom line
  • 11:21 - 11:26
I refused to allow you to get an answer
to that question because both of them
  • 11:26 - 11:32
are firmly square in the excuse column
and I have no patience for that there
  • 11:32 - 11:33
    will always be problems
  • 11:33 - 11:38
let's talk about a million other things
that are a way to stop success
  • 11:38 - 11:42
the health and well-being of your family
members so it takes your mind away from
  • 11:42 - 11:47
execution the country you live in his
    government and political you know
  • 11:47 - 11:49
    concepts at these moments
  • 11:49 - 11:53
I lost startups in China that I've
invested in that got traction but then
  • 11:53 - 11:57
people that were wired into the
government decided to not allow it to
  • 11:57 - 11:58
happen and then the startup disappeared
  • 11:58 - 12:02
not as easy to be an entrepreneur there
it's still a communist country sorry
  • 12:02 - 12:04
it just is and so all
  • 12:04 - 12:08
these things can be problems right
    there's a competitor with a billion
  • 12:08 - 12:08
    dollars
  • 12:08 - 12:12
who is also skilled and punches you in
the mouth and knocks you out in the
  • 12:12 - 12:13
    first round
  • 12:13 - 12:18
right the world changing that mean
there's just a million obstacles right
  • 12:18 - 12:21
the media one bad coverage of you a
    moment in time
  • 12:22 - 12:25
you know what I think about a lot you
know I think about a lot let's get
  • 12:25 - 12:28
really real this is why we did this show
  • 12:28 - 12:33
I always am a human being and I always
think about a moment in time what if I
  • 12:33 - 12:35
just say the wrong thing at the wrong
    time
  • 12:35 - 12:40
right what if i call out China for being
a communist country in an episode while
  • 12:40 - 12:43
    i'm on a rant and somebody's watching
doesn't like the way that tastes and it
  • 12:43 - 12:47
takes away a business opportunity for me
    in china in seven years
  • 12:47 - 12:50
even though i'm not trying to say it's
just things that I saw what if what if
  • 12:50 - 12:54
you know what if what if i look down on
my phone while I'm driving even though
  • 12:54 - 12:58
I've really not done that and I hit
somebody and I kill them and that
  • 12:58 - 13:01
becomes the story and I like forget
about the story about what you think of
  • 13:01 - 13:02
    me
  • 13:02 - 13:05
I will never recover from that because I
    killed somebody
  • 13:05 - 13:08
because I need to check out a tweet
these are moments in time so there are
  • 13:08 - 13:12
so many things that can keep you from
    being successful
  • 13:12 - 13:16
right the people that you invested in
having something bad happened to them
  • 13:16 - 13:22
so it slows you down my friends there
are a million reasons why not
  • 13:22 - 13:25
but there's one great reason why which
    is
  • 13:25 - 13:29
you've just gotta persevere no matter
what it is it's just the way that it's
  • 13:29 - 13:31
    hard being an entrepreneur
  • 13:31 - 13:34
it's hard building a business everybody
thinks it's so easy that there's an
  • 13:34 - 13:37
    entitlement there's a disaster
  • 13:37 - 13:41
singing China here because my us thing
right now there is an insane generation
  • 13:41 - 13:44
of 18 to 25 year olds right now that
think they're entitled to having a
  • 13:44 - 13:47
business because they saw the social
    networking movie and everybody decided
  • 13:47 - 13:52
you're a kid and you know what tech is
because you used instagram early on
  • 13:52 - 13:56
you're entitled to actually build a
business building a business is hard and
  • 13:56 - 13:58
you know what makes it really hard
  • 13:58 - 14:04
everything that happens every day of
every moment so you can pick time you
  • 14:04 - 14:08
can pick money as the one or two things
that you think stop you from winning
  • 14:08 - 14:10
your game but the truth is there's a
  • 14:10 - 14:14
    million reasons ninety-nine percent of
businesses go into business for a reason
  • 14:14 - 14:17
and that reason is it's hard
  • 14:17 - 14:22
and so if you're watching this show I've
got a sense of who you are and you need
  • 14:22 - 14:28
to start creating layers and layers and
layers and layers of skin to be able to
  • 14:28 - 14:34
get through because the glamour of being
an entrepreneur the goodness you know
  • 14:34 - 14:36
you get very confused by my optimism
because it's my optimism i can't help it
  • 14:36 - 14:39
it's just how i roll it's probably one
of the variable 1% reasons why I'm
  • 14:39 - 14:42
successful but please don't get it
    twisted
  • 14:43 - 14:48
this is hard every day is hard and if
you don't have the stomach to weather
  • 14:48 - 14:49
    the storm
  • 14:49 - 14:52
you will not be successful and by the
way let me throw you a real weird
  • 14:52 - 14:54
    curveball and that's okay
  • 14:54 - 14:57
people have to look at themselves in the
mirror and understand if their number
  • 14:57 - 15:01
two three four five six seven and her
    organization that has differences of
  • 15:01 - 15:04
being a number one but maybe that's
    where your skill set
  • 15:04 - 15:09
sits maybe that's how you make your
fortunes and happiness and all the
  • 15:09 - 15:13
things that you're looking for and so
that question got me going a little bit
  • 15:13 - 15:18
Steve because it's under the context of
excuses and i will never make an excuse
  • 15:18 - 15:22
everything that's a problem with me
    everything I don't achieve everything
  • 15:22 - 15:28
that's a problem of being a media and
everything is my fault and I I succumb
  • 15:28 - 15:31
to that and I respect that and I
actually think that's the way it should
  • 15:31 - 15:31
    be
  • 15:31 - 15:37
and so I'm no excuses my friends when I
hand over heart surgeon a data i used it
  • 15:37 - 15:43
i used to ask myself I just wanted to
myself I used to ask a good lord i just
  • 15:43 - 15:51
pray why why did this happen have to
happen to me after what has a pretty
  • 15:51 - 15:52
    good person
  • 15:52 - 15:57
I tried to everybody right all the
presidents got moved everybody I'm KidCo
  • 15:57 - 15:57
    he was that look
  • 15:57 - 16:04
so what I why did the little piggy being
what I have to be there
  • 16:04 - 16:10
the 14 more no unfortunately however you
want to look at to be streaking down and
  • 16:10 - 16:14
have to suffer like this for you to have
    after myself
  • 16:14 - 16:22
18 months 18 months six months i had to
spend in a wheel to six more months
  • 16:23 - 16:29
I had to sleep sitting down on the floor
with my back up against the wall because
  • 16:29 - 16:31
    if I laid down I couldn't breathe
  • 16:31 - 16:38
they had a cut my diaphragm during the
surgery whole lot of complications when
  • 16:38 - 16:42
I sit there as a good Lord why why did I
    have to go through this
  • 16:43 - 16:49
why why was that why did you do this to
me and it got so bad so bad the pain was
  • 16:49 - 16:55
so bad i heard was so bay times that I
used to say lower it up if I'm gonna
  • 16:55 - 16:59
have to live like this for the rest of
    my life
  • 16:59 - 17:05
then just take me take me now I don't
want to suffer like this anymore
  • 17:05 - 17:13
I went to one of many many many doctor
visits that I had at the VA hospital a

here today I would thank him because he
  • 18:01 - 18:03

  • 18:05 - 18:13
