10 Ways to stop making EXCUSES
-
-
3:35 - 3:38n
-
3:38 - 3:42and if the answer was yes then she said
then you could have thought your way out -
3:42 - 3:47of it doesn't matter with John and Susan
or Mary or anybody else did or set and -
3:47 - 3:51it was the most important thing she did
for my brother and myself because if you -
3:51 - 3:55don't accept excuses pretty soon people
stop giving them and they start looking -
3:55 - 4:01for solutions and that is a critical
issue when it comes to success -
4:01 - 4:05we know that too many young men in our
community continue to make bad choices -
4:05 - 4:07and I have to say
-
4:07 - 4:10growing up I made quite a few myself
-
4:12 - 4:16sometimes I wrote off my own failings as
just as another example of the world -
4:16 - 4:18trying to keep a black man down
-
4:18 - 4:25I had a tendency sometimes to make
excuses for me not doing the right thing -
4:25 - 4:30but one of the things that all of you
have learned over the last four years is -
4:30 - 4:33there is no longer any room for excuses
-
4:38 - 4:43I understand there's there's a common
fraternity Creed here at at Morehouse -
4:43 - 4:48excuses are tools of the incompetent
used to build bridges to nowhere and -
4:48 - 4:53monuments of nothingness but we've got
no time for excuses -
4:54 - 4:59not because the bitter legacy of slavery
and segregation had banished entirely -
4:59 - 5:05they have that not because racism and
discrimination no longer exists -
5:05 - 5:12we know those are still out there it's
just that in today's hyper-connected -
5:12 - 5:18hyper competitive world with millions of
young people from China and India and -
5:18 - 5:23Brazil many of whom started with a whole
lot less than all of you did all of them -
5:23 - 5:28entering the global workforce alongside
you nobody is going to give you anything -
5:28 - 5:34that you have not our nobody cares how
tough your upbringing ones -
5:35 - 5:39nobody cares if you suffered some
discrimination -
5:42 - 5:47and moreover you have to remember that
whatever you've gone through it pales in -
5:47 - 5:52comparison to the hardships previous
generations endure and they overcame -
5:52 - 5:57them and if they overcame them you can
over come up to my son's 14 is fabulous -
5:57 - 6:03and we're having this conversation about
what he plays in sports or when he does -
6:03 - 6:06something about you go full out or do
you not -
6:06 - 6:10and I see sometimes in him that when
he's out on the field of doing something -
6:10 - 6:16he doesn't play full out and I'll have
an excuse like my leg hurts or my arm -
6:16 - 6:22hurts or something happened the coach
was unfair whatever angle the referee -
6:22 - 6:26was unfair and what happens with people
as we tend to go out into the world and -
6:26 - 6:30we look for those sort of excuses about
why things aren't the way we want them -
6:30 - 6:37and when you do that you lose all your
power in life when you start focusing on -
6:37 - 6:41the external on the excuses you lose
your power here is the way people really -
6:41 - 6:45think i will tell you i can go out on
the stage and bomb -
6:45 - 6:50you go out there you just bomb right and
people will respect you for going out -
6:50 - 6:52there and trying your hardest
-
6:52 - 6:57it's not how you actually perform that
earned the respect of your peers is the -
6:57 - 7:00fact that you went out and actually did
it -
7:00 - 7:04that's the difference I decided to go to
film school because i love the idea of -
7:04 - 7:10making films and photography and
everybody said it was a crazy thing to -
7:10 - 7:13do because in those days nobody made it
into the film business -
7:13 - 7:16I mean just unless you were related to
somebody there was no way in -
7:16 - 7:23so everything is silly you're never
going to get a job but I I wasn't moved -
7:23 - 7:29by that i set the goal of getting
through film school and just then -
7:29 - 7:33focused on getting to that level because
I didn't you know I didn't know where I -
7:33 - 7:39was going to go after that I wanted to
make documentary films and eventually I -
7:39 - 7:42got into the goal of once i got the
school of making a film -
7:42 - 7:46one of the most telling things about
film schools you got a lot of students -
7:46 - 7:50in those days especially not quite so
much today but wandering around say oh I -
7:50 - 7:53wish I could make a movie i wish i could
make a movie -
7:53 - 7:56you know I can't get in this class I
can't get any you know first place i -
7:56 - 7:59have an animation class it wasn't a
production class -
7:59 - 8:05I had a history class and I an animation
class in the animation class they gave -
8:05 - 8:13us one minute of film to put onto the
animation camera to operate it to see -
8:13 - 8:15how you could move left move right
-
8:15 - 8:21make it go up and down and it was a test
to see you know the the teacher would -
8:21 - 8:24you had certain requirements that you
had to do you have to make it go up and -
8:24 - 8:28down and then the teacher would look at
it and say oh yes you maneuver this -
8:28 - 8:32machine to do these things and i took
that one minute film and made it into a -
8:32 - 8:40movie and it was a movie that one like
you know 20 or 25 awards you know in -
8:40 - 8:45every film festival world and kind of
change the whole animation Department -
8:45 - 8:47and their end in
-
8:47 - 8:50meanwhile the other guys were into i
wish i could make a movie which is the -
8:50 - 8:54production class and so then I got into
another class and it wasn't really a -
8:54 - 8:57production class but I managed to get
some film when I made a movie and I made -
8:57 - 8:59lots of movies while I'm in school
-
8:59 - 9:02well everybody also running around
saying oh I wish I could make a move -
9:02 - 9:06so speaking of excuses
-
9:06 - 9:10one of my other favorite ones is no
excuses no victim mentality -
9:11 - 9:15the world owes you with nothing
-
9:15 - 9:21the world might come help you but I
wouldn't count on it and if you start -
9:21 - 9:27from the feeling that you need the world
to participate in order for you to be -
9:27 - 9:31successful at taking on this new thing
that you're considering doing -
9:31 - 9:35you're right to be scared and white I
wouldn't count on it though -
9:35 - 9:39but if you start from the perspective
that the world owes you nothing which it -
9:39 - 9:40doesn't
-
9:40 - 9:46and that is not likely to bring you any
particular help you have nothing to lose -
9:46 - 9:52because really isn't that for every one
of the people you brought on to team is -
9:52 - 9:53not how you
-
9:53 - 9:57them to feel when they report to you you
know what excuses that doesn't mean that -
9:57 - 10:01you can't fail or that they can't ever
fail but right when you're starting you -
10:01 - 10:03have nothing to lose right
-
10:03 - 10:09when you're a huge company you can spend
ninety nine percent of your time -
10:09 - 10:14worrying how not to mess up the
billion-dollar year -
10:14 - 10:18money hoes you've created but you don't
have a billion-dollar your money hoes -
10:18 - 10:19right now you have nothing
-
10:19 - 10:23so you can't lose spend ninety nine
percent of your time imagining what -
10:23 - 10:28would happen if things went well and
planning for that because there's no -
10:28 - 10:31downside it's like a free option on an
adventure -
10:31 - 10:35remember to ask what do you feel is a
bigger obstacle to success -
10:35 - 10:40a lack of time or lack of capital
Roberto this is a tremendous question i -
10:40 - 10:42think the biggest obstacle
-
10:42 - 10:50I to success is a lack of optimism that
question in itself is the problem my -
10:50 - 10:50friend right
-
10:50 - 10:53you're looking at two things that are
both negatives and guess what -
10:53 - 10:57both of them are obstacles when i
started my library . com transformation -
10:57 - 10:58from my business
-
10:58 - 11:01I had time i worked my face off every
minute but we don't have a whole lot of -
11:01 - 11:04money in our profit center so it took
more time right -
11:04 - 11:08it's just the way it is today i have
more money boy don't have time but -
11:08 - 11:15neither ever ever will be an excuse for
me and so just to Jill this through the -
11:15 - 11:17throat of the vaynernation that's right
-
11:17 - 11:21I want that graphic don't smile d Rock
here's the bottom line -
11:21 - 11:26I refused to allow you to get an answer
to that question because both of them -
11:26 - 11:32are firmly square in the excuse column
and I have no patience for that there -
11:32 - 11:33will always be problems
-
11:33 - 11:38let's talk about a million other things
that are a way to stop success -
11:38 - 11:42the health and well-being of your family
members so it takes your mind away from -
11:42 - 11:47execution the country you live in his
government and political you know -
11:47 - 11:49concepts at these moments
-
11:49 - 11:53I lost startups in China that I've
invested in that got traction but then -
11:53 - 11:57people that were wired into the
government decided to not allow it to -
11:57 - 11:58happen and then the startup disappeared
-
11:58 - 12:02not as easy to be an entrepreneur there
it's still a communist country sorry -
12:02 - 12:04it just is and so all
-
12:04 - 12:08these things can be problems right
there's a competitor with a billion -
12:08 - 12:08dollars
-
12:08 - 12:12who is also skilled and punches you in
the mouth and knocks you out in the -
12:12 - 12:13first round
-
12:13 - 12:18right the world changing that mean
there's just a million obstacles right -
12:18 - 12:21the media one bad coverage of you a
moment in time -
12:22 - 12:25you know what I think about a lot you
know I think about a lot let's get -
12:25 - 12:28really real this is why we did this show
-
12:28 - 12:33I always am a human being and I always
think about a moment in time what if I -
12:33 - 12:35just say the wrong thing at the wrong
time -
12:35 - 12:40right what if i call out China for being
a communist country in an episode while -
12:40 - 12:43i'm on a rant and somebody's watching
doesn't like the way that tastes and it -
12:43 - 12:47takes away a business opportunity for me
in china in seven years -
12:47 - 12:50even though i'm not trying to say it's
just things that I saw what if what if -
12:50 - 12:54you know what if what if i look down on
my phone while I'm driving even though -
12:54 - 12:58I've really not done that and I hit
somebody and I kill them and that -
12:58 - 13:01becomes the story and I like forget
about the story about what you think of -
13:01 - 13:02me
-
13:02 - 13:05I will never recover from that because I
killed somebody -
13:05 - 13:08because I need to check out a tweet
these are moments in time so there are -
13:08 - 13:12so many things that can keep you from
being successful -
13:12 - 13:16right the people that you invested in
having something bad happened to them -
13:16 - 13:22so it slows you down my friends there
are a million reasons why not -
13:22 - 13:25but there's one great reason why which
is -
13:25 - 13:29you've just gotta persevere no matter
what it is it's just the way that it's -
13:29 - 13:31hard being an entrepreneur
-
13:31 - 13:34it's hard building a business everybody
thinks it's so easy that there's an -
13:34 - 13:37entitlement there's a disaster
-
13:37 - 13:41singing China here because my us thing
right now there is an insane generation -
13:41 - 13:44of 18 to 25 year olds right now that
think they're entitled to having a -
13:44 - 13:47business because they saw the social
networking movie and everybody decided -
13:47 - 13:52you're a kid and you know what tech is
because you used instagram early on -
13:52 - 13:56you're entitled to actually build a
business building a business is hard and -
13:56 - 13:58you know what makes it really hard
-
13:58 - 14:04everything that happens every day of
every moment so you can pick time you -
14:04 - 14:08can pick money as the one or two things
that you think stop you from winning -
14:08 - 14:10your game but the truth is there's a
-
14:10 - 14:14million reasons ninety-nine percent of
businesses go into business for a reason -
14:14 - 14:17and that reason is it's hard
-
14:17 - 14:22and so if you're watching this show I've
got a sense of who you are and you need -
14:22 - 14:28to start creating layers and layers and
layers and layers of skin to be able to -
14:28 - 14:34get through because the glamour of being
an entrepreneur the goodness you know -
14:34 - 14:36you get very confused by my optimism
because it's my optimism i can't help it -
14:36 - 14:39it's just how i roll it's probably one
of the variable 1% reasons why I'm -
14:39 - 14:42successful but please don't get it
twisted -
14:43 - 14:48this is hard every day is hard and if
you don't have the stomach to weather -
14:48 - 14:49the storm
-
14:49 - 14:52you will not be successful and by the
way let me throw you a real weird -
14:52 - 14:54curveball and that's okay
-
14:54 - 14:57people have to look at themselves in the
mirror and understand if their number -
14:57 - 15:01two three four five six seven and her
organization that has differences of -
15:01 - 15:04being a number one but maybe that's
where your skill set -
15:04 - 15:09sits maybe that's how you make your
fortunes and happiness and all the -
15:09 - 15:13things that you're looking for and so
that question got me going a little bit -
15:13 - 15:18Steve because it's under the context of
excuses and i will never make an excuse -
15:18 - 15:22everything that's a problem with me
everything I don't achieve everything -
15:22 - 15:28that's a problem of being a media and
everything is my fault and I I succumb -
15:28 - 15:31to that and I respect that and I
actually think that's the way it should -
15:31 - 15:31be
-
15:31 - 15:37and so I'm no excuses my friends when I
hand over heart surgeon a data i used it -
15:37 - 15:43i used to ask myself I just wanted to
myself I used to ask a good lord i just -
15:43 - 15:51pray why why did this happen have to
happen to me after what has a pretty -
15:51 - 15:52good person
-
15:52 - 15:57I tried to everybody right all the
presidents got moved everybody I'm KidCo -
15:57 - 15:57he was that look
-
15:57 - 16:04so what I why did the little piggy being
what I have to be there -
16:04 - 16:10the 14 more no unfortunately however you
want to look at to be streaking down and -
16:10 - 16:14have to suffer like this for you to have
after myself -
16:14 - 16:2218 months 18 months six months i had to
spend in a wheel to six more months -
16:23 - 16:29I had to sleep sitting down on the floor
with my back up against the wall because -
16:29 - 16:31if I laid down I couldn't breathe
-
16:31 - 16:38they had a cut my diaphragm during the
surgery whole lot of complications when -
16:38 - 16:42I sit there as a good Lord why why did I
have to go through this -
16:43 - 16:49why why was that why did you do this to
me and it got so bad so bad the pain was -
16:49 - 16:55so bad i heard was so bay times that I
used to say lower it up if I'm gonna -
16:55 - 16:59have to live like this for the rest of
my life -
16:59 - 17:05then just take me take me now I don't
want to suffer like this anymore -
17:05 - 17:13I went to one of many many many doctor
visits that I had at the VA hospital a -
17:13 - 17:16young doctor approach me came up to me
CT -
17:16 - 17:26I heard it used to be the champion of
work and raise my head but had a little -
17:26 - 17:27little little
-
17:27 - 17:30including pride they left and I say yes
-
17:32 - 17:38I'm one and two heard about I'm the one
they told stories about -
17:39 - 17:45yes I'm CT fights he said what in tho
happen to you -
17:48 - 17:54ok for you don't hurt me don't hurt me
down -
17:54 - 18:01b-but i tell you what if that doctor was
here today I would thank him because he -
18:01 - 18:03is not
-
18:03 - 18:05I'm it
-
18:05 - 18:13is what made me determined to no longer
hold while in my self-pity -
18:14 - 18:19- no longer ask why did he do this to me
-
18:20 - 18:24my determination change from that they
own -
18:25 - 18:29I want to prove to that little smart
wise -
18:30 - 18:33but I can come back
-
18:33 - 18:39there I was still CT foot now one going
to let his little smart -
