Open Michigan is an initiative dedicated to helping the University of Michigan community
-
share our scholarly resources with the world.
-
We do a lot of things to support this sharing including developing tools, processes and methods that
-
support open teaching and learning on our campus.
-
We help our community create and reuse digital content that encourages innovation, creativity and participation.
-
Faculty, students and staff who want to share their work or their departments' work
-
can publish it in our collection under "Creative Commons" licenses.
-
Our media rich collection of open content has materials from over 360 contributors across 13 University of Michigan colleges, schools and departments.
-
It includes animations, illustrations, open Wikis, videos, presentations, posters and student notes,
-
all licensed for distribution and adaptation.
-
We have over 10,000 views per month to our collection on open.umich.edu and almost 1,000,000 views on the 188 videos of our YouTube channel.
-
Established in 2008, the Open Michigan initiative was housed at the medical school, with the goal of making the first 2 years of the medical course content available as
-
open educational resources. Some examples of our collection include
-
"The Principles of Researching and Problem Solving" from the College of Pharmacy. This course contains presentation slides
-
but it also contains 4 student presentations and 3 student posters.
-
The professor of this course expressly invited students to contribute content and showcased the outstanding products from her class.
-
Another example is the interactive syllabus for the "History of the American West."
-
This is a wiki that contains almost the primary source documentation from digitized collections across the United States.
-
Finally, we have videos on Microbiology co-authored by a Michigan Professor
-
who lectures at ? University of Science and Technology in Ghana.
-
The collection of 12 videos have received a sum of 220,000 views on YouTube
-
with most of those view in the US, the UK, India, Saudi Arabia and Egypt.
-
Our collection grows through community involvement, and we support this community by showcasing
-
and connecting University of Michigan research and tools that support the creation and use of accessible,
-
adaptable research and scholarly work.
-
Open Michigan initiative also host events like design jams, workshops and training opportunities for our community
-
to learn how to share better.
-
There are lots of ways to get involved with us; You can volunteer to help us publish content,
