From US probes to psychic powers and government conspiracies,
(text about Illuminati's conspiracy + "It starts here!" sticker)
  • 0:12 - 0:14
history is riddled with unexplained events.

    You can turn back now,
(Stuff they don't want you to know - howstuffworks.com)
  • 0:17 - 0:19
or learn the stuff they don't want you to know.
  • 0:24 - 0:26
    Here are the facts.
  • 0:26 - 0:29
    John Fitzgerald Kennedy was assassinated
  • 0:29 - 0:33
in Dallas, Texas, on November 22nd, 1963.
  • 0:33 - 0:37
In the ensuing chaos, Lyndon Johnson was sworn in,
  • 0:37 - 0:40
Lee Harvey Oswald was arrested, and the nation mourned.
  • 0:40 - 0:42
    Congress formed the Warren Commission
  • 0:42 - 0:44
to discern the facts of the case.
    (Warren Report)
  • 0:44 - 0:47
Although they concluded that Oswald was a lone gunman,
  • 0:47 - 0:50
holes indicate that a majority of Americans today
  • 0:50 - 0:53
either question or reject these findings.
  • 0:53 - 0:56
In the decades since, historians, researchers,
  • 0:56 - 0:58
    conspiracy buffs and skeptics alike
  • 0:58 - 1:00
have tried to tackle this story.
  • 1:00 - 1:02
This story remains one of the most enduring
  • 1:02 - 1:05
and controversial moments in American history.
  • 1:05 - 1:08
Given the unreasonably combative, emotional tone
  • 1:08 - 1:11
so common among both theorists and skeptics,
  • 1:11 - 1:14
it's often been difficult for people with differing views
  • 1:14 - 1:16
to listen to each other's arguments.
  • 1:16 - 1:19
One author believes that both sides may be correct,
  • 1:19 - 1:21
that there was a conspiracy at play,
  • 1:21 - 1:24
but not, perhaps, the one you'd expect.
  • 1:24 - 1:27
    Here's where it gets crazy.
  • 1:27 - 1:30
Conspiracy theories about the JFK assassination
  • 1:30 - 1:33
finger everyone from the CIA to the Mafia,
  • 1:33 - 1:36
and even members of Congress have appeared to sign on.
  • 1:36 - 1:39
But, according to author Seymour Morris, Jr.,
  • 1:39 - 1:42
most of these theories miss the true conspiracy at hand.
  • 1:42 - 1:45
In his book, American History Revised,
  • 1:45 - 1:47
    Morris examines some lesser-known facts
  • 1:47 - 1:51
about the assassination and the ensuing investigations.
  • 1:51 - 1:53
First, Morris notes that the Warren Report
(Warren's letter to the President, submitting the commission's final report)
  • 1:53 - 1:55
    missed some important points:
  • 1:55 - 1:58
being both unable to establish a political motive
  • 1:58 - 2:02
or adequately explain how Oswald managed the job.
  • 2:02 - 2:04
Public distrust of the Warren Report led
  • 2:04 - 2:07
to a new Congressional investigation in the mid-70s,
  • 2:07 - 2:10
when Congress formed the House of Representatives'
  • 2:10 - 2:13
Select Committee on Assassinations, or HSCA.
  • 2:13 - 2:18
Between the Warren Commission's work and the HSCA investigation,
  • 2:18 - 2:22
four other governmental groups exhaustively investigated the incident.
  • 2:22 - 2:25
But the HSCA found a new piece of evidence:
  • 2:25 - 2:27
    a police dictabell (?) recording.
  • 2:27 - 2:32
On this recording, it sounded like 4 shots were fired, rather than 3.
  • 2:32 - 2:36
While it's within the realm of plausibility that Oswald could fire 3 shots,
  • 2:36 - 2:39
4 shots were taken to be proof of a second gunman.
  • Not Synced
Although virtually every witness claimed to have heard 3 shots during the murder,
  • Not Synced
the HSCA still changed the report,
  • Not Synced
claiming that there probably was some sort of conspiracy,
  • Not Synced
although they could not name any specific conspirators.
  • Not Synced
The story of this mysterious recording doesn't stop here.
  • Not Synced
In 1979, a percussionist named Steve Barber listened to it,
    (Search: Steve Barber, JFK, Zepruder)
  • Not Synced
and recognized that there might be a cross-over of sounds.
  • Not Synced
In other words, that what sounded like 4 shots was actually noise from two different sources.
  • Not Synced
By the time this information came to light, the public had already decided that the 4 shots were legitimate.
  • Not Synced
So, if as Morse argues, the conspiracy theories based on this recording are flawed
  • Not Synced
in what - if any - conspiracy was at play,
  • Not Synced
Morse named one that you might not expect:
  • Not Synced
after the assassination, he claimed, the CIA and FBI participated in an intelligence cover-up
  • Not Synced
at the highest levels, refusing to inform the Warren Commission
  • Not Synced
about the Kennedy brothers' secret operations to remove Castro.(3:39)
