Right now most people, almost
two thirds of humans on Earth

are not on the Internet

And when access is available, it's
generally expensive and slow.

That means getting the latest educational
material to majority of children

at schools around the world is very
difficult and costly.

Often, materials are either out of date,
or not available at all.

That's why Learning Equality
created KA Lite:

to bring high quality educational
materials like Khan Academy

to places that the Internet
does not reach.

Devices or SD cards loaded
with KA Lite

can be carried in on foot and
used totally offline.

But once it's there,

we need a way for content and updates
to be distributed efficiently,

when there's not Internet,
or bandwidth is limited.

We are calling it:
KA Lighthouse!

Lighthouse works as a WiFi router
mixed with a hard drive.

Any WiFi enabled device,
like a smartphone, tablet or laptop,

can connect to Lighthouse and
browse the content on it.

Like all of Khan Academy courseware
on KA Lighthouse.

Pretty much in the middle of
nowhere in Illinois,

we are going to bolt a satellite dish
to a random tree,

and within a few minutes we gonna
have a digital library up and running.

What makes Outernet special is when you
plug Lighthouse into a satellite dish,

anywhere in the world, the Lighthouse
hard drive downloads

new content from Outernet
satellites in space.

New courses, new videos, new books...
new anything.

All for free!

Outernet is designed to work
where the Internet doesn't,

using the same satellite TV dishes found
in even the most remote villages.
