George Takei Remembers Hiroshima | Takei's Take Japan

  • Not Synced
(Takei) In my endless quest to learn all things tech,
  • Not Synced
I've come to a modern city devoted to peace.
  • Not Synced
I'm George Takei and this is Takei's Take: Hiroshima.
  • Not Synced
    On August 6th, 1945,
  • Not Synced
the United States dropped the first atomic bomb
  • Not Synced
on the Japanese port city of Hiroshima,
  • Not Synced
killing tens of thousands of men, women, and children instantly.
  • Not Synced
No single bomb has ever caused such mass destruction.
  • Not Synced
It is man's worst use of technology.
  • Not Synced
At the time, I was eight years old, living in an internment camp
  • Not Synced
    in Tule Lake, California.
  • Not Synced
I would not know the fate of our family living in Hiroshima
  • Not Synced
    until the war had ended.
  • Not Synced
I have come to Hiroshima many times to visit family
  • Not Synced
    and revisit history.
  • Not Synced
It's always compelling, haunting, beautiful, and unspeakably sad.
  • Not Synced
It is also a place fervently committed to peace.
  • Not Synced
    (Takei) That was ground zero.
  • Not Synced
A strong concrete building that was able to withstand
  • Not Synced
    the atomic bombing.
  • Not Synced
The people of Hiroshima wanted to keep that as a reminder
  • Not Synced
of both the power and horror of the atomic bomb.
  • Not Synced
This island here that we're on
  • Not Synced
was a district that was dense and vibrant with life.
  • Not Synced
    Shops, restaurants, movie theaters...
  • Not Synced
    and it was flattened.
  • Not Synced
(Takei) Brad and I go to the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum
  • Not Synced
to get a tour from its Deputy Director, Noriyuki Masuda,
  • Not Synced
    Mr. Masuda has a mission.
  • Not Synced
...to show future generations that these weapons
  • Not Synced
should definitely be eradicated from our society.
  • Not Synced
    (speaking Japanese)
  • Not Synced
(Takei) The man who was sitting there casted a shadow
  • Not Synced
    - and he probaby burned to death.
    - Hmm.
  • Not Synced
And you can see the outline there
  • Not Synced
and the other over here looked much lighter.
  • Not Synced
    (speaking Japanese)
  • Not Synced
That explosion took place 600 meters above the ground,
  • Not Synced
and you see it right over ground zero.
  • Not Synced
And the impact was 280 meters on the ground.
  • Not Synced
My grandmother's house was right about there.
  • Not Synced
My aunt's home is over there.
  • Not Synced
(Takei) This museum memorializes the tragedy,
  • Not Synced
    its victims and its aftermath,
  • Not Synced
which includes the city's ongoing devotion to peace,
  • Not Synced
not just here, but throughought the world.
  • Not Synced
Since 1968, all Hiroshima mayors have written protest letters
  • Not Synced
    to countries possessing nuclear arms.
  • Not Synced
From 1968 to now, over 660 protests were sent.
  • Not Synced
Of course, this wall is not large enough to display all the letters.
  • Not Synced
We have some moe on the other side and more in the back
  • Not Synced
so you can see all of them in one glance.
  • Not Synced
(Takei) Hiroshima's commitment to peace is inspiring.
  • Not Synced
Aside from this museum, the Peace Memorial Park
  • Not Synced
    runs through the city center.
  • Not Synced
Hiroshima is among the few places on earth,
  • Not Synced
    outside of the United States,
  • Not Synced
that celebrates Dr. Martin Luther King's birthday.
  • Not Synced
    I marched with Dr. King,
  • Not Synced
    and his words resonate here.
  • Not Synced
We have learned to fly the air like birds,
  • Not Synced
and swim the sea like fish,
  • Not Synced
but we have not learned the simple art of living together
  • Not Synced
    as brothers.
  • Not Synced
Every year, on August 6th, the world remembers
  • Not Synced
    a terrible act of war.
  • Not Synced
Every year, on August 6th, the people of Hiroshima
  • Not Synced
    recommit themselves to peace.
  • Not Synced
And they invite all of us to join them.
