What I saw at the Ferguson protests
-
0:01 - 0:03So, I'm afraid.
-
0:04 - 0:05Right now,
-
0:05 - 0:07on this stage,
-
0:07 - 0:08I feel fear.
-
0:09 - 0:11In my life, I ain't met many people
-
0:11 - 0:13that will readily admit
when they are afraid. -
0:14 - 0:16And I think that's because deep down,
-
0:16 - 0:17they know how easy it spreads.
-
0:18 - 0:20See, fear is like a disease.
-
0:21 - 0:23When it moves, it moves like wildfire.
-
0:24 - 0:25But what happens when,
-
0:26 - 0:27even in the face of that fear,
-
0:27 - 0:29you do what you've got to do?
-
0:29 - 0:31That's called courage.
-
0:31 - 0:33And just like fear,
-
0:33 - 0:34courage is contagious.
-
0:36 - 0:38See, I'm from East St. Louis, Illinois.
-
0:38 - 0:39That's a small city
-
0:39 - 0:42across the Mississippi River
from St. Louis, Missouri. -
0:42 - 0:46I have lived in and around
St. Louis my entire life. -
0:48 - 0:50When Michael Brown, Jr.,
-
0:50 - 0:51an ordinary teenager,
-
0:51 - 0:56was gunned down by police in 2014
in Ferguson, Missouri -- -
0:56 - 0:59another suburb, but north of St. Louis --
-
0:59 - 1:00I remember thinking,
-
1:00 - 1:02he ain't the first,
-
1:02 - 1:06and he won't be the last young kid
to lose his life to law enforcement. -
1:06 - 1:08But see, his death was different.
-
1:09 - 1:10When Mike was killed,
-
1:10 - 1:14I remember the powers that be
trying to use fear as a weapon. -
1:15 - 1:19The police response to a community
in mourning was to use force -
1:19 - 1:20to impose fear:
-
1:21 - 1:22fear of militarized police,
-
1:23 - 1:24imprisonment,
-
1:24 - 1:25fines.
-
1:25 - 1:28The media even tried
to make us afraid of each other -
1:28 - 1:29by the way they spun the story.
-
1:29 - 1:32And all of these things
have worked in the past. -
1:32 - 1:34But like I said,
this time it was different. -
1:36 - 1:39Michael Brown's death and the subsequent
treatment of the community -
1:39 - 1:43led to a string of protests in and around
Ferguson and St. Louis. -
1:44 - 1:47When I got out to those protests
about the fourth or fifth day, -
1:47 - 1:49it was not out of courage;
-
1:49 - 1:51it was out of guilt.
-
1:51 - 1:53See, I'm black.
-
1:53 - 1:55I don't know if y'all noticed that.
-
1:55 - 1:56(Laughter)
-
1:56 - 2:02But I couldn't sit in St. Louis,
minutes away from Ferguson, -
2:02 - 2:03and not go see.
-
2:03 - 2:05So I got off my ass to go check it out.
-
2:06 - 2:07When I got out there,
-
2:07 - 2:09I found something surprising.
-
2:11 - 2:13I found anger; there was a lot of that.
-
2:14 - 2:16But what I found more of was love.
-
2:17 - 2:19People with love for themselves.
-
2:19 - 2:20Love for their community.
-
2:20 - 2:22And it was beautiful --
-
2:22 - 2:24until the police showed up.
-
2:25 - 2:28Then a new emotion was interjected
into the conversation: -
2:29 - 2:30fear.
-
2:31 - 2:32Now, I'm not going to lie;
-
2:32 - 2:35when I saw those armored vehicles,
-
2:35 - 2:36and all that gear
-
2:36 - 2:38and all those guns
-
2:38 - 2:39and all those police
-
2:40 - 2:41I was terrified --
-
2:41 - 2:42personally.
-
2:44 - 2:46And when I looked around that crowd,
-
2:46 - 2:49I saw a lot of people that had
the same thing going on. -
2:49 - 2:52But I also saw people
with something else inside of them. -
2:52 - 2:54That was courage.
-
2:54 - 2:55See, those people yelled,
-
2:55 - 2:56and they screamed,
-
2:57 - 2:59and they were not about
to back down from the police. -
2:59 - 3:01They were past that point.
-
3:01 - 3:03And then I could feel
something in me changing, -
3:03 - 3:05so I yelled and I screamed,
-
3:05 - 3:09and I noticed that everybody around me
was doing the same thing. -
3:10 - 3:12And there was nothing like that feeling.
-
3:13 - 3:15So I decided I wanted
to do something more. -
3:16 - 3:19I went home, I thought:
I'm an artist. I make shit. -
3:19 - 3:23So I started making things
specific to the protest, -
3:24 - 3:27things that would be weapons
in a spiritual war, -
3:28 - 3:30things that would give people voice
-
3:31 - 3:34and things that would fortify them
for the road ahead. -
3:35 - 3:38I did a project where I took pictures
of the hands of protesters -
3:38 - 3:42and put them up and down
the boarded-up buildings -
3:43 - 3:44and community shops.
-
3:45 - 3:48My goal was to raise awareness
and to raise the morale. -
3:49 - 3:51And I think, for a minute at least,
-
3:51 - 3:52it did just that.
-
3:54 - 3:57Then I thought, I want to uplift
the stories of these people -
3:58 - 4:00I was watching being
courageous in the moment. -
4:00 - 4:04And myself and my friend,
-
4:04 - 4:06and filmmaker and partner Sabaah Folayan
-
4:06 - 4:08did just that with our documentary,
-
4:08 - 4:10"Whose Streets?"
-
4:11 - 4:14I kind of became a conduit
-
4:14 - 4:17for all of this courage
that was given to me. -
4:17 - 4:20And I think that's part
of our job as artists. -
4:21 - 4:25I think we should be conveyors
of courage in the work that we do. -
4:25 - 4:30And I think that we are the wall
between the normal folks -
4:30 - 4:33and the people that use their power
to spread fear and hate, -
4:33 - 4:35especially in times like these.
-
4:36 - 4:38So I'm going to ask you.
-
4:38 - 4:40Y'all the movers and the shakers,
-
4:41 - 4:43you know, the thought leaders:
-
4:43 - 4:44What are you gonna do
-
4:44 - 4:47with the gifts that you've been given
-
4:47 - 4:49to break us from the fear
the binds us every day? -
4:50 - 4:52Because, see, I'm afraid every day.
-
4:52 - 4:54I can't remember a time when I wasn't.
-
4:55 - 4:59But once I figured out that fear
was not put in me to cripple me, -
5:00 - 5:01it was there to protect me,
-
5:02 - 5:04and once I figured out
how to use that fear, -
5:05 - 5:06I found my power.
-
5:07 - 5:08Thank you.
-
5:08 - 5:11(Applause)
